Hey, guess who finally updated? Sorry about the long wait but I've been pretty busy and my Beta reader has been pretty sick this last month. I've been more concerned with their health than with them editing my stories. My stories can wait, they're health can not.
They're still sick but insisted on editing them after I messaged asking if they were feeling better and saying I was concerned after not hearing from them.
The only review was someone telling me 'Great chapter' thank you I'm glad you enjoyed it. Onto the story!
Wednesdays were going to be one of the worst days for classes. The only decent class they had that day was Herbology the other classes were a double history of magic and two DADA classes. It was noted, that the bad classes were with Gryffindors. Thankfully, Damien hadn't tried to talk to Ember yet. She knew he would though, maybe try and order her to come back to the family and give them all the Ravenclaw family money.
Hell no, if she did that, then the money would probably be gone in less than a year with the Potter family's spending habits.
Ember woke up on Tuesday morning and hopped out of bed, today she had her first Potion class of the year, and she was excited. She couldn't wait to learn potions from a proper teacher. Severus Snape was the youngest Potions master in the world and someone that she looked up to.
She went down to the common room and took out her potions book to reread while waiting for her two friends. She was still surprised she had friends her own age, for the longest time it had just been her, Pearl, Jasper, and Bippy so it was a bit overwhelming to be around so many people her age.
She looked up when Daphne and Tracy sat down on either side of her and smiled softly. She thought that she might like having these two around, maybe, one day she would trust them enough to tell the two girls the truth about her but, that day isn't today.
After a quick breakfast, the three went to Double charms where the class was once again, going over the levitation charm to help the few who learned slower than most catch up. She spent this class period helping those who needed it and managed to earn fifteen house points by the end of class.
Ember grabbed Daphne and Tracy's hands and started dragging them to Potions class with the biggest smile the two girls had seen on her face. The two girls shared a look as they let themselves be dragged by their friend.
Daphne hid a smile, she was glad that she had chosen Ravenclaw instead of Slytherin. If she had chosen to go to the house of the Snakes instead of the Raven's then she wouldn't have been able to be as friendly with Ember as she was. She knew that Ember was keeping things from her and Tracy but, she understood, she had just met Daphne and Tracy on the train less than a week ago, and it would take time for the group of three to get to the point where they shared secrets. After all, she had things she didn't feel comfortable sharing yet either.
She was also grateful that Ember had convinced her to go to Ravenclaw for the simple reason that if she had gone to Slytherin, she would have to deal with those pureblood snobs that think that just because their grandparents were siblings means that they're better than everyone else.
Daphne might be a pureblood but, her family had a habit of not marrying anyone too closely related, as they had noticed that when they did the magic of their children suffered. Her ancestors had noticed what no other pureblood family seemed to realize and, made sure to take steps to prevent their children's magic from suffering for their mistakes.
She was thankful because if her ancestors hadn't done this, she might have grown up with the same thinking as Pansy Parkinson, something that gave her nightmares just thinking of it.
Tracy watched her two friends as they stood outside the potions classroom amused. Ember looked like she was about to bounce through the ceiling, and Daphne was looking thoughtful. She was glad that she and Daphne had met Ember when they did.
If the two hadn't met her they would have gone to Slytherin, a place where Daphne would have had to hide her true self and try to protect Tracy with everything she had just because Tracy was a half-blood.
Tracy's father was from a long line of purebloods but her mother had been a muggle-born who died giving birth to her. Every other child she had met besides Daphne had always looked down on her for having a muggle-born mother and being a half-blood.
Tracy didn't care what they thought, she loved her mother for giving her life. She had overheard her grandparents talking one day when they thought she had been asleep. They said that her mother knew that, she would die if she went through with the pregnancy and giving birth yet still chose to do it. She gave up her life all so Tracy would have a chance to live, so She would.
She would live and have a long, happy life for her mother. She hoped she was proud of her.
Ember rushed in and chose one of the front desks, eyes sparkling as she started, setting up her things before grabbing a notebook and quill to take notes.
Soon enough, the door slammed open, and the Professor walked in, his cloak billowing behind him as he walked to stand behind the desk at the front of the class.
He stared out at the class before speaking, his voice seemed to fill the entire room. "There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don't expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. However, for those select few." He trailed off as he looked over to the Slytherin side of the room to Draco Malfoy.
He didn't keep silent for more than a few moments, but it was enough for Ember to realize that the Professor, somehow, knew Malfoy and already chose him as his favorite student before the first class was even over.
This didn't stop her from writing down everything he was saying though.
"Who possess, the predisposition... I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death." She blinked and looked up when realizing that the Professor had stopped speaking and was staring straight at her.
Those eyes, those black eyes held hatred, disgust, and longing in them. Ember held back a sigh as she realized that this teacher already hated her, and she had been looking forward to this class and being taught by him too.
"Then again, maybe some of you have come to Hogwarts in possession of abilities so formidable that you feel confident enough to not pay attention!" Professor Snape walked over, sneering at Ember in a way that was supposed to make her feel small, but it only annoyed her. Something he seemed to notice and made him mad.
"Miss Potter - no, wait Miss Ravenclaw is what you go by, isn't it? Do you believe you are smart enough to not need to pay attention to the teacher?" Ember didn't rise to his baiting and just stared at him, raising an eyebrow as she slowly started losing respect for this man.
"Very well, Tell me, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?" She blinked surprised, she knew the answer to this but she also knew that this wasn't a first-year question. This was something you learned if fifth year in preparation for your owls.
"It depends on the other ingredients added to the potion sir but the most well-known potion using powdered root of Asphodel to an Infusion of wormwood is a sleeping potion so strong it is known as the Draught of Living death. The drinker can only be awoken with the antidote since the Draught does not wear off on its own."
She held back a smirk as Snape's sneer got even bigger, "Even a broken clock can be right twice a day, tell me this. Where, Miss. Ravenclaw, would you look if I asked you to find me a bezoar?"
This question was taught to first years but wasn't taught until the end of the year. If Ember had been a normal student, she wouldn't know it, but luckily, she wasn't just any student now was she?
"It depends on if you want it to be fresh or not sir if it's an emergency then I would recommend looking in your potions kit but if you wish to go out and harvest a fresh one then you would need to look in the stomach of a goat. A Bezoar can be life-saving as it can counteract most poisons long enough for you to get to a healer and take the antidote."
Ember was pleased to notice that Snape's eye was twitching as he contained his anger at not being able to humiliate her, she knew he wasn't done, though, and she was right because not even a moment later, he spoke up again, practically snarling at her.
"If you are so smart tell me this, what is the difference between monkshood and wolfsbane?"
"Trick Question sir, they are the same plant they just go by different names. It also goes by the name Aconite and is very poisonous and must never be taken outside of Potions."
"Twenty Points from Ravenclaw for being a know-it-all! Well, why weren't you all writing this down!" Snape snarled before going to the front and continuing with the lesson.
Ember didn't know what the guy's problem with her was but she refused to put up with it. After dinner was made. Ember told her friends she had to write a letter and went up to the dorm room.
She sat on her bed the curtains closed as she composed a letter each to Pearl and Jasper. She knew most students would write the letter as one, addressed to both people since they lived together, but Ember wouldn't do that. Her Gems deserved to each have their own personal letter.
Dear Pearl,
How have things been at the manor? I hope you and Jasper are getting along well without me there. Don't worry I'll be home for Christmas so it is only a few months until we see each other again.
I've made two friends, Daphne Greengrass, and Tracy Davis. Tracy has brown hair and caramel-colored eyes, that I've noticed that in the right lighting, they seem to be yellow. Daphne has long Blond hair and sapphire-colored eyes.
Daphne might seem a little cold at first but that's just her testing you, trying to see if you're able to look behind the mask and see the true her. Tracy seems to be more friendly and outgoing out of the two of them. They were sorted into Ravenclaw with me, we met on the boats before the sorting.
Classes so far haven't been what I was expecting. Charms, Transfiguration, Herbology, and astronomy seem to be okay if a little easy for me but the other classes suck.
History of magic is taught by a ghost, usually that would be cool but he talks in this droning tone that makes everyone go to sleep. I have to put a silencing spell around our desk for me, Daphne, and Tracy to stay awake and we study history on our own in class. All he talks about are Goblin rebellions too!
DADA is a joke, the teacher stutters so much that no one can understand him and he's scared of his own shadow!
Don't even get me started on Potions! The teacher sucks, I know I was looking forward to it and being taught by Severus Snape but you know what they say, never meet your heroes. Sadly, it turns out to be true.
Severus Snape is the worst teacher in the world. He came in and started this speech about how he didn't expect many of us to understand the art of potion making and during it, he called us all dunderheads except for the Slytherins. Making it clear he already favored them and when he noticed that I was 'scribbling' in reality I was taking notes he got on my case.
He first called me Miss Potter before correcting himself and then he asked me a question that most won't learn until they're studying for their owls! Then he asked me something that most don't learn until the end of the year and then he asked me a trick question.
I got all the questions right but then he took away points, twenty of them, for being a "know-it-all".
Other than those three classes things have been great outside that meeting with the Potters.
Love
Lady Ember Ravenclaw
First Year student. ;)
She added a winky face at the end because while she and Pearl knew she had more titles than that, she didn't want anyone to intercept the letter and find out.
She then wrote to Jasper, basically telling her the same things in different words. The only thing different was Ember asking if Jasper could see if she could do anything about the poor teaching in the castle or at least make Snape a better teacher.
After Ember finished writing she noticed the time and got ready for bed, she would send the letters out in the morning before breakfast.
