I have been trying to keep everything in chronological order. In this chapter I will reveal Rhett's reaction to Scarlett taking Kenny.

Chapter Eleven

Scarlett knew she had to get as far away from Rhett as she could possibly get. She knew where she was going. She was moving to Australia. She was moving halfway around the world. They were moving to Sydney, Australia. Now she had to decide what her new first name was going to be. She actually might stick with Katie or Kate. She would answer to it, and she didn't think Rhett knew her first name. Besides, she knew Rhett would not be doing the investigating himself. He would hire the Pinkerton Agency to find her. The agents would just look at the last name and move on. Rhett would tell them to look for Scarlett Butler, or Hamilton, or O'Hara or Kennedy, but never Katie Lincoln. She had chosen that name because of President Lincoln. It would be the last name a true Southerner would choose.

With those two decisions made, Scarlett settled down on the sofa to continue reading the adventure story Wade had gotten for her before they had left Atlanta.

After about thirty minutes, Wade said, "Mother, this is going to destroy him."

"I can't worry about Rhett's softer feelings right now. I must worry about Rhett's anger."

Wade smiled and said, "True." Wade looked at Kenny and Gerry sleeping and continued, "You couldn't leave him once you had found him."

"No, I couldn't. Go on and read your book. We can't worry about what Rhett is feeling. Although right now I bet he is feeling extreme anger."

Wade grinned and said, "No bet."

Scarlett grinned back and said, "Good choice."

Scarlett woke the boys up after an hour-long nap. She wanted them to be a little bit tired. Gerry was really getting too old for a nap. She guessed Kenny, also. She always had Gerry laid down though just to rest because otherwise he was extremely cranky. Cranky like Bonnie had been when Rhett let her get away with not taking a nap. The thought made Scarlett smile sadly. Any thought of Bonnie always made her sad. Sad for the opportunities she had disregarded. The opportunities she would give almost anything to have again.

Rhett had not returned to his townhouse until almost two forty-five. He had been in no hurry. His business meeting had run long. Afterwards the men had decided to have dinner together. Rhett had agreed to go with them because he had already missed dinner with Kenny. After dinner Kenny took a nap every afternoon until three o'clock, therefore Rhett figured he had plenty of time. He stopped by a brothel that he knew of. He rarely felt the urge these days, but yesterday he had seen a woman with black hair getting into a cab when he and Kenny had returned to the townhouse. There had been something about her that had reminded him of Scarlett. Every night he dreamed of Scarlett, but last night the dream had turned erotic of him and his wife. Therefore, he had an itch to scratch.

It was not the first time that Rhett had seen a woman who had reminded him of Scarlett. At first, when it had happened Rhett's silly heart had soared. He had thought, 'Scarlett has come looking for me.'

In the beginning, Rhett had made the woman's acquaintance. It was never Scarlett. He had even called on a few of the women, but he quickly stopped. It was painful to be reminded of Scarlett and not be able to be with her.

Nonetheless every time it happened, he would dream of Scarlett in a sexual way, and he would have to relieve his need.

He had told the madame that he wanted a green-eyed girl with black hair. The whore would do all the things that Scarlett would never do like tell him she loved him. As wonderful as it was in the moment when she was saying the words, afterwards it was always a letdown when he realized it was all a charade. However, each time he used the services of a whore he required that she say the words. He had always made Belle say the words also.

Unfortunately, the brothel did not have any women who had green eyes; therefore, Rhett got a woman with brown eyes and dark brown hair. It would do. He was going to close his eyes anyway. After an enjoyable half hour, Rhett returned to the townhouse. His post coitus bliss was destroyed the minute he walked into the townhouse.

At the door to the townhouse Anna met Rhett and said, "Mr. Butler, a woman took Kenny."

"What?!"

"While we were at the park a woman walked away with Kenny."

"What in the God damn hell are you talking about? Why in hell did you let a strange woman walk off with Kenny. Are you braindead? Your damn job was to keep a small boy safe, and you let some damn woman walk off with my son. Walk off with my son! She didn't even have to hurry to kidnap my son. She just casually walked away."

"She said…."

"You talked to the woman?" Anna nodded. Rhett yelled, "You were close enough to grab Kenny and you instead let him go. Get the hell out of here. Wait! Have you informed the police?"

"No, Sir."

"Why in the hell not? What have you been doing after you let some God damn person kidnap my boy?"

"Waiting for you to get home."

"I'm home. When did this happen?"

"Around nine-thirty, I think. Right after we ….."

"You think? You think? You don't have a brain to think with. The kidnapper has a five hour start on me because you have been sitting around doing nothing. You are fired. Get your clothes and get out of my townhouse. Jonathan, go get the police. Someone has kidnapped Kenny." Rhett looked at Anna then said, "Some woman has kidnapped my son."

That the woman might have been Scarlett never entered Rhett's brain. After all, Scarlett was in Atlanta, she didn't know about Kenny, and she would never go to a park with or without her children. In addition, to all that Rhett was utterly convinced his son had been kidnapped for money.

Jonathan just went and got his hat. He didn't ask any questions. Mr. Butler didn't like to be questioned about anything.

Anna said, "Mr. Butler, there is something…."

"Why are you still here? Leave! Now!"

"Yes, Sir."

"Get out of my sight."

Anna hurried off. She was not going to face anymore of Mr. Butler's anger. She had faced it before, but it hadn't been this bad. His face had taken on quite a distorted mask and his eyes had gotten very cold. She got to her room that she had shared with Kenny. She hoped he was alright, but she couldn't worry about the boy now. She was sure he was safe; he was with his mother.

When Anna had told the rest of the staff that a woman took Kenny, nobody had suggested she contact the police. Everyone knew that Mr. Butler didn't like people making decisions for him. She hadn't told anyone that the woman was Mrs. Butler because she was afraid Mr. Butler didn't want anyone to know his wife was still alive. After all, he was the one that had told everyone she was dead.

Anna had her belongings packed already and she was out the door about five minutes after Jonathan. Mrs. Butler had been right. She should have gotten her belongings and left while Mr. Butler was still out of the townhouse.

Anna did not have a home of her own because she always lived with her employer. She decided she would go stay with her sister, Eliza. As long as Anna helped with the chores Eliza would let her stay indefinitely. Eliza had eight children and probably one on the way. She always needed help.

The five dollars Mrs. Butler gave Anna would tide her over until she found another job. In that moment, she decided she would go back to being a scullery maid. The wages weren't as good, but it wasn't as hard as watching rich people's children. They never appreciated her efforts.

Anna decided to go see Mr. Kelly tomorrow about finding her another job. Right now, she just wanted to get to her sister's home and put this entire day behind her. No, her entire experience in the Butler household behind her.

Rhett was in an agitated state. He was pacing back and forth. He was worried sick about Kenny. He could not think of anyone who would be brave enough to kidnap his son. It was probably just someone who saw an opportunity to make some quick cash and took his son. Yet how did the kidnappers get Kenny to go with them willingly.

Suddenly, Rhett knew how. He had always told his son not to talk to strangers. He had been very clear to the nursemaids that he didn't want Kenny talking to any other adult. The kidnappers had been smart. They had brought a child into the playground. A child that had black hair and green eyes. A child that looked enough like Kenny to fool the little boy. It wouldn't take much of a disguise. The kidnappers' little boy just had to keep telling Kenny he was a twin, and he would believe the child sooner or later.

That made sense. Hadn't what's her name said she had talked to the woman. That was an even better ploy. Rhett knew that Kenny had wanted a mother. Every other child he knew had a mother.

Rhett thought, 'That's why the other little boy wasn't at the park yesterday. When the kidnappers saw me at the park, they had not stayed. What did the woman look like?'

Rhett would go ask the nursemaid.

When Rhett got to Kenny's room, the nursemaid was not there. He wondered where she had gone. Why wasn't she right here waiting on him?

Rhett remembered he had fired her and told her to leave the townhouse. Rhett asked Hazel, the maid, "Do you know where the nursemaid is?"

"You mean Anna?"

"Yes, Anna."

"She said goodbye as she was leaving the townhouse. I don't know where she was going. She said she had been fired."

"Yes, she had been. Does she have family in this area?"

"I have no idea. We didn't really talk that much. We were both working. Susie, Julia, and I sometimes talk in the evening, but Anna never joined our conversations. When we tried to get her to join us, she would always say she was too busy taking care of Kenny."

"Who?"

Hazel was not surprised that Mr. Butler didn't know anyone's name. She knew they were not important enough for him to know their names. Even though Mr. Butler knew her name she also knew she wasn't any more important than anyone else. She said, "The cook and the scullery maid."

"Thank you."

When Rhett talked to Julia and Susie, they didn't know any more than Hazel. As he walked back to the parlor, he vaguely wondered which name went with which person. He quickly dismissed that thought. That wasn't important. Finding Kenny was what was important.

Rhett knew Hazel's name because he was always calling for her. Hazel had been with him since he moved into the townhouse. Her and Jonathon. Rhett knew the butler's name also. Probably because he was the only man in his employment.

After ten minutes a policeman showed up. Rhett looked at the officer. He wondered how old the boy was. He didn't look a day over eighteen. Rhett said, "Is there someone older than you that can assist me? This is extremely serious. My son has been kidnapped. I don't want him to die because of your lack of experience."

Even though the officer Jim Reed was insulted by Rhett's statement, he was also happy to not have to work with this rude, superior bastard. Jim said, "Let me go get someone with more experience than me."

"Go. Go damn it!"

"Yes sir."

Jim was quickly out of the townhouse and thanking his lucky stars that he could turn the entire mess over to someone else. He too would not like to be responsible for a child's death.

Author's Notes: I couldn't resist giving Scarlett more of a head start because Rhett had gone to a brothel. Tee Hee.
