Scream V (2022) My Version

Chapter Four: Grave Site Visit

A rusted old beat up jeep moves down the road towards the cement art. In this rusted old beat up jeep sits Dwight Riley. Better known as Dewey the former deputy turned sheriff of Woodsboro. Dewey looked worse for ware but for the most part still looked the same.

Since his sister Tatum's death seven years earlier, things had changed for Dewey. He had resigned shortly after the case was solved and decided to move with Gale and the boys to the big Apple. That's right, they moved to New York City. Gale had been offered the job on a major television network news program as a lead anchor woman. Though Gale often reported the news in the studios, she loved being in the field and would sometimes do corresponding work in the field. Both Gabe and Tommy began to thrive in the big apple as both were sent to private school and made friends quickly.

While his wife, son and nephew were thriving in their lives as New Yorkers, the same could not be said for Dewey. He took a job as a police officer liason but was unhappy. Dewey missed home. He missed Woodsboro. God only knows why. For someone who's been attacked by ghostface, having been stabbed in the back twice, and assaulted, one has to wonder why he missed that god forsaken town. Hell even Sidney, Billy and Jill left town and hasn't been back since. Even Robbie who lives with Jill moved away and even moved his parents to Los Angeles. Still Dewey was the only one who missed home. His sister Tatum and mom are buried there so perhaps he wants to be close to them. No one would blame him.

Dewey's home sickness took a toll on his marriage to Gale. He was beginning to feel miserable but he didn't want to leave her. The two often argued over it but Gale would always win. Her argument made sense. Why live in a town that has caused pain to him and their family? It didn't make sense to her. But Dewey wanted to go back home. He even wanted to bring his son back with him but Gabe and Tommy protested. He remembered the conversation that took place. He looks off in the distance while driving reminiscing about that night:

Flashback

"Why won't you come home with me?" Dewey asked.

"Because I am home Dewey. This is my home. New York is my home now!" Gale said her voice raised.

"That's not what I mean Gale. I want you me and the boys to head back to woodsboro!" Dewey said his voice raised as well. Both are trying to convey their feelings for their current situation.

"Why would you want to go back there Dewey?!" She asked. "You lost your mother and your sister was murdered in that town. Hell Sidney, Billy and Jill moved away and haven't been back since. Even Robbie moved his parents away from that town. Come on! Why on earth would you want to go back?!"

"Because it's home for me." Dewey said.

"Well not for me. I'm sorry babe but I'm not going back there ever again." Gale said.

"Gabe, do you wanna move back to Woodsboro with me?" Dewey asked his son.

"No way dad. Have you forgotten what happened the last time were there? Aunt Tatum died and Tommy damn near got killed. I don't want to step foot in that town again." Gabe said.

"Uncle Dewey I agree with aunt Gale and Gabe, I don't want to go back there. I'm still traumatized from having to watch my own mother die. I got cut and almost got killed. I can't do it." Tommy said. Dewey nodded understandingly. "I'm sorry uncle D."

"It's ok I get it." Dewey said.

Later that night Dewey waited until Gale, Tommy and Gabe all went out for the evening before packing his bags and leaving town. He couldn't stay there any longer.

End Of Flashback

Present

Dewey shook his thoughts away remembering how hard it was for him to leave his wife, son and nephew behind. Both are now separated but Gale never filed for divorce. Neither did he. Both clearly still love each other. His leaving New York happened eight months ago.

Since then, Dewey has called a few times to talk to Gale who would speak with him. Tommy spoke with him as well. The only person who wouldn't talk to him was Gabe.

Dewey heard about the attack on the Carpenter teen girl. He hated to hear about anyone being attacked and was always on his guard. He wondered if ghostface was back but that part of the attack wasn't specified. Still Dewey wanted to keep his guard up.

His car pulls into the graveyard parking lot. Dewey spots Tatum's grave site. He parks his car in a spot and gets out of the car with flowers. He moves towards the grave site. He spots his mother's grave site as well.

"Hey mom." Dewey said stopping at his mother's grave. He place a bouquet blue flowers along her grave stone. "I remembered blue, you like the blue roses. I miss you mom. I love you." He said then moving to stand in front of Tatum's grave stone. "Hey sis. Long time no see." He smiles thinking of her. "It has been seven years since I came here. It's hard you know? Missing you and all. Thought I'd come and visit. Mainly I just wanted to talk to you. Something we did when you were here." He pauses a second. "Well you probably wanna know what we've been up to. Well Gabe and Tommy are so big now. My boy is seventeen. He's into basketball and made the varsity team. Of course it was Tommy who told me this because as of six months ago, Gabe stopped speaking to me. You'd be so proud of Tommy. He's a talented writer. He's on the school newspaper and is quite the little journalist. It's weird I thought Gabe would end up being a journalist like Gale but it's Tommy. He's also a straight A student. Gabe gets a's and b's. We're proud of them. Gale, I and the boys had moved to New York for awhile but I got homesick. I know, I know it sounds stupid and with the legacy of ghostface, I still consider this place home." He pauses again to sit down on the grass. "I know you think I'm stupid for coming back here but I feel comfortable here. I can't explain it I just do." He said removing a photo of her from his pocket. "You're wondering why Gale and the boys aren't with me. Well I wanted them to come with me but they chose to stay in New York. I sort of left them when they were all out of the house. I know I'm a coward for not sticking it out. Gabe hasn't spoken to me since. I don't blame him. Guess that's my punishment for leaving them." Dewey said looking around as he is the only one there. A somber expression written on his face, he wishes Tatum were sitting with him there talking to him. He suddenly felt his eyes well up with tears. "I wish you were here Tay. I need you now more than ever." He begins to sob. "I miss you so much it hurts. Everyday without you has been so hard. I miss you and mom of course." He said sobbing awhile longer before composing himself. "I'm ok. I'm just a bit emotional today. I know you want me to stop crying. Ok. I get it." He said wiping the tears from his eyes. "A girl was attacked last night. Her name is Tara Carpenter. She's the daughter of Christine. You remember her. She was a year younger than you and Sid back when you two were in school. She also has an older daughter Sam. I don't know if this is ghostface all over again but I'll keep an eye out on things. She survived the attack and ghostface doesn't leave people alive so maybe this was random. I don't know but I'm gonna watch out for things in town. I know I will protect myself. Promise." He said deciding to just sit there awhile longer before leaving. He missed his sister and mother so much. He and Tatum had a rough sibling relationship when they were younger but that all changed when she had moved back to town during his tenure as the sheriff. Both had gotten closer and looked out for another. The two talked often and were the babysitters to each other's kid. Dewey missed this about his sister. He was glad to have gotten that out of his system. He had been going through a lot and didn't really have anyone he could talk to about that. This was a bit therapeutic for him. He was glad he did it.

A plane is flying above the clouds soring towards the Los Angeles airport. On this plane sits a man in business class. He is dressed in business attire. The man is Benjamin Carpenter. Ben to his wife and friends. He got the call from his wife Christine about their youngest daughter Tara'a attack and is on his way back home. Ben is a thirty-seven year old distinguished looking chap who you wouldn't suspect to be the father a twenty year old and a sixteen year old but he is. Ben was a businessman having gone to school and worked to support his family. He's deep in though when his phone rings.

"Hey babe what's going on at the hospital?" He asked his deep velvet voice.

"She's out of surgery and is resting now." Christine said.

"Good." Ben said.

"Sam knows I called her to." Christine said.

"And she's on her way?" Ben asked.

"Yes." Christine said.

"What did sheriff Hicks say?" Ben asked.

"Nothing yet. They quaraned off the house because it's still a crime scene." Christine explained.

"Ok. Did Tara say anything before going into surgery?" Ben asked.

"Yes she said that it was someone in a ghostface costume." Christine responds.

"Not this bullshit again. Why is a person in a ghostface mask targeting our children? I mean don't they usually go after Sidney Prescott and dickhead boyfriend of her Billy Loomis?" Ben asked.

"Yes and I don't know why our baby was targeted but rest assure I will find out." Christine said standing by the window her daughter's hospital room. She looks out the window. For a woman of thirty-six, she looks very sexy. Her latinheritage shines through her beautiful features. "How soon before the plane lands?" She asks.

"About forty minutes. I should there in a couple of hours." Ben said figuring out the time of the plane landing and the amount of time it takes to drive to Woodsboro.

"Mom." Tara groans. Christine looks over at her.

"She just woke up. I'll see you when you get here." Christine said.

"Ok." Ben said as they both hung up their phones.

"I'm here baby. You ok?" Christine asked Tara who slowly opens her eyes. Christine sits on the bed close to Tara making sure to let her know she's there.

"Mommy." Tara said.

"I'm here." She said taking Tara's hand and kissing it gently. Tara cries. "It's ok baby. You're safe now." Christine said rubbing her daughter's hand and then gently kisses her forehead. "It's going to be ok."

"Is papi coming?" Tara asked.

"Yes and Sam." Christine said. "You're friends will be here shortly." She said as Tara nods holding her mother tight. Christine noticed this and moved in a little closer to Tara to hold her.
