Scream V (2022) My Version

Chapter Nine: Sam's A Target

With everyone having fell asleep, Richie was allowed to stay and was watching something on his phone. Both her parents sat on the long sofa chair asleep with a blanket over them. Sam is prompted up on a chair and is leaning on her hand. She must've been having a bad dream because her head tosses from side to side. The indication is that she is having a nightmare. Richie could see she was in distress.

Sam's eyes suddenly shoot open and she jolts awake! Dozed off in a chair next to Tara's bed. She looks to her sister, still asleep. Safe. Okay. Looks to the long couch and could see her parents asleep. She turned to the other chair...

Richie sits, airpods in, watching his phone. Moving a lot, really into whatever he's watching. Like he's ducking punches from the bad guy. He blinks, sees she's awake.

"You okay?" Richie asked.

"Bad dream. I thought you were going to the hotel." Sam said.

"Stab's on Netflix, I got sucked in." Richie said. Sam gave him a look. He sees her face and shrugs. "What? I want to be prepared." Sam shakes her head.

"I gotta find a bathroom." Sam said getting up from the chair to find the bathroom if anything to stretch her legs.

Sam pads down the hall. Very quiet. Passing an empty nurses' station. Finds a bathroom by the elevators...

She entered the bathroom and headed straight for a stall. She pees. She flushed then leaves the stall. Sam washes her hands. Splashes cold water on her face. Sam stares back at her reflection in the mirror. Sam is a beautiful girl. She drew the attention from guys at school. Richie scooped her up though. Both would get jealous looks from all the guys around campus neither cared though. She and Richie were into each other.

Deciding to get a snack, Sam left the bathroom and made her way to the cafeteria area. She heads over to the snack machine, gets a snickers bar from the bottom compartment after paying for it. She fingers the candy bar before deciding to eat it.

She begins to fiddle with the wrapper when her phone rings shaking her from her thoughts. She looks at it, grateful for the distraction. Caller ID is Amber Freeman. Sam answers.

"Hello?" Sam said into her phone.

It's not Amber, it's a Voice we know.

"Hello, Samantha." The raspy voice of ghostface.

"Who is this?" Sam asks.

"Someone who knows your family secret." Ghost faces says to her.

"What family secret? What fuck are you talking about?" Sam asks confused.

"What's your favorite Stab movie, Sam? I'm guessing it's the one with Billy Loomis in it. You know with Randy Meeks and Stu Macher being the killers." Ghost face said laughing.

"You're the fucker who hurt my sister-" Sam asked angrily.

"She's not the only one I'm going to hurt. I had to get you to come back here somehow, didn't I?" Ghost face said.

"You want to fuck with me, asshole? I'm right here, come and get me." Sam said the killer.

"With pleasure." Ghost face said shoves the door the cafeteria closed revealing himself. Sam screams and ducks the knife slash! The blade impales itself in the stall door! Ghostface tries to pull it out as Sam tries to run past --

WHAM! He punches her straight in the face. She goes down hard. He rips the knife out of the stall door, advancing! Sam, scrambling backwards --

"Help! Help me!" Sam calls out to anyone who could hear her. This draws the attention of both Ben and Christine who are awaken to their daughter's cries. They see Tara still in the bed but it's Sam who's missing. Ben jumps up off the long couch Ben rushes out the room.

Meanwhile ghostface slashes down at her, but she kicks him in the leg! He buckles as Sam rises. Sees the door beyond Ghostface.

In one quick move she leaps over him as he slashes at her! Sticks the landing, barrels out the door into --

She bolts towards the Nurses's station.

"Help, somebody's trying to kill me!" Sam yells running for safety. She rounds a corner and- WHAM! Collides with a deputy who was running towards her! Stationed there to watch over Tara.

"What's going on-?" Deputy Vincent.

"A man in the cafeteria just tried to kill me, call the cops!" Sam explains. Ben comes running towards her.

"SAM!" Ben calls to her.

"PAPI" She calls to him running into his arms.

"Oh my god. Are you alright?" Ben asked her.

"Yeah. He tried to kill me." She said to him. He pulls her into a hug. "We need the cops here." She said to him.

"I am the cops-" Deputy Vincent said.

"Call more cops!" Ben yelled.

The Deputy pulls his gun. Looks around the corner. Stay back. He moves towards it. Sam watches him. Snatches a pair of scissors off the Nurse's station just in case. The Deputy reaches the door. Kicks it open...

Nothing. The cafeteria's empty. Window at the other end open, wind blowing through the place. He lowers his gun...

"You check behind the door?" Sam asked. Ben is with her as the deputy checks behind the door. Ben is shielding her.

He raises his gun again. Steps inside. Sam watches from the hall as he checks each stall. Kicking them open one by one. Comes upon the last one... She tenses...

He kicks it open. Empty. Ghostface is gone. Sam exhales. Ben exhales.

"There's no one here. I'll call it in." Deputy Vincent said.

"Let's get you back to the room." Ben said as he walked his daughter back to Tara's room. Sam is visibly shaken up by what happened.

"Sam." Christine rushed over to Sam.

"Mommy." Sam hugged her.

"You ok?" Richie asked. Sam nods.

"What happened?" Christine asked.

"I went to use the bathroom then I wanted a snack so I went to the cafeteria to the snack machine. I got a snickers bar when my phone rings. It was some guy on the phone saying that he attacked Tara. This made me mad. He said she wasn't going to be the only one he hurt. He revealed himself from behind the door. It was some dickhead in a ghostface costume who attacked me. I fought him off and then ran." Sam explained. Tara woke up.

"What happened?" Tara asked.

"Your sister was attacked by ghost face." Ben said.

"What?" Tara asked her eyes wide in shock. How dare this son of a bitch attack her sister? "Sam are you alright?"

"Uh-huh." Sam said. "He said something else to me."

"What did he say?" Christine asked.

"He said that he knows our family secret." Sam said. Ben, Tara and Richie wore the same confused expression. The only one who looked shook was Christine. She was the only one harboring a secret. "I have no idea what he's talking about. Papi?" She asked. Ben shrugs. Richie obviously doesn't know.

"None of us have any idea about a family secret." Ben said.

"He said just to mess with you." Richie said.

"Richie's right honey. The person could've just been trying to mess with your head." Christine said.

"Stay in the room. Ok." Ben said.

"Ok." Sam said still shaken up.

The next morning, Sheriff Hicks arrives at the crime scene. She spots Vince's dead corps. She wonders who could've killed him and if it was ghostface. She was told that he been driving from the pool hall due to a call coming into the sheriff station from the pool hall last night. She gets in her car and heads to the pool hall.

She pulls up the pool hall shortly after arriving and realizes it's closed. She gets out of her car and walks around to see if she can spot someone in the inside but the door was closed and locked.

"It's closed." Came a voice from behind her. She spun around with her hand on her weapon. "Easy sheriff. I'm unarmed." The voice said. The voice belonged to a ragged looking homeless man.

"Who are you?" Sheriff Hicks asked.

"The names James. James Cane." James said. "The Pool hall is closed."

"I realize that." Sheriff Hicks said. "What are you doing out here sir?"

"I'm a homeless man sheriff." James said. "See that tent?" He asked pointing to a black tent beyond the bushes past the pool hall sign. Sheriff Hicks nods. "I sleep there every night. Have been for the last few months.

"What do you do during the winters?" Sheriff Hicks asked.

"I find an abandoned building and sleep there." James said. "Bartender won't be in for another couple of hours."

"Ok. Was hoping to talk to the bartender." Sheriff Hicks said.

"Is this about last night?" James asked.

"How do you know about what happened last night?" Sheriff Hicks asked.

"I was there." James said.

"Can you tell me what happened?" Sheriff Hicks asked.

"Well your boy and his friends were playing pool talking. A rough lookin young man came into the pool hall wanting to talk to a girl name Liv and that's when the mixed lookin curly haired kid says something to him. The rough lookin kid yells at the mixed curly haired kid. A gruffy looking man gets involved and gets the shit kicked out of him. A younger lookin kid steps in & helps when a knife is pulled out." James said explaining the incident last night.

"Who had the knife?" Sheriff Hicks asked.

"The rough lookin kid pulled out the knife out knife. The mixed curly haired kid. Then another young man stepped in, disarmed the rough lookin kid and beat his ass." James said smiling.

"What did the gruffy guy look like?" Sheriff Hicks asks.

"He looks like the guy who used to be the sheriff. And the young man had curly hair and looked mixed as well." James finished. Sheriff Hicks realizes he was describing both Dewey Riley and Zeke Meeks.

"Ok thanks." She said moving back to her car, getting in starting the engine. She sighed deeply. First Tara Carpenter was attacked, then Vince is murdered. What the fuck was going on? She decided to text her son.

Text Message

"Wes, I need you and your friends at the station pronto." -sent

"We'll be there." Wes texted back.

The sheriff's station was bustling with deputies going about through they're regular duties. With the attack on Tara, Vince's murder and Sam being attacked, everyone was busy.

The teens' cars parked out front among the police cruisers.

Chad, Wes, Mindy, David, Nate Stacy, Mike and Amber sit on a bench at the front of the Sheriff's office. All but Liv were interviewed. Chad is speaking to Wes.

"...I mean, she even slept with Vince, you know? Liv is not known for her conservative values. Is it me? Am I not as hot as I've been led to believe?" Chad asked.

"No." Mike responded laughing. The others laughed as well.

"Fuck you Mike." Chad retorted.

"You're a suspect in a murder, and this is what you're worried about?" Wes asked. Chad shrugs.

"We're not all single virgins, Wes." Amber said as Wes eyes her, who's texting with Tara.

"Well, maybe that'll change soon." Wes said. It takes a moment for Chad to take his meaning.

"You think- Wait, you actually think Tara- That she'd leave that... to come back to you?!" Chad asked.

Wes shushes him, but Chad's escalating cackles result in the rare Dom Deluise silent laugh. Liv returns.

"Does Wes's mom think it's you? Because of the stalking? Did you use my "boring" defense?"

Liv looks back towards Judy's office.

"I think she has her eye on someone else, actually..." Liv said.

"Hey Liv you alright?" Chad asked her.

"Chad, don't use this situation to ask me out. It's getting tiresome." Liv said. Chad lowered his head. Mike, Nate and David laughed. Stacy felt bad for him. Mindy hated Liv for how she treated her brother.

Inside of the Sheriff's office, Judy looks at Dewey with pity as he holds an ice pack to his quickly-bruising face. He had been nursing that bruise all night. She looked over at Dewey noticing the disshelved look. His once handsome features were replaced by a haggard looking man. A man she doesn't recognize anymore. He was different person entirely. A lot of that had to do with his drinking.

"Dewey. You know why you're here?" Judy asked.

"Your deputy told me. Vince Schneider was found murdered right after he used my skull as a piñata. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy." Dewey said. Judy, shocked.

"You used to be a nice guy, Dewey." Judy said.

"I'm still a nice guy, Judy. I'm just tired." Dewey responded.

"Where did you go after you left the bar?" Judy asked.

"Home." Dewey responded a little offended that she'd think he'd killed Vince. After all that they been through.

"Did you... drive in this condition?" Judy asked.

"What condition? Injured? Or drunk?" Dewey asked.

"Dammit, Dewey, I have to clear you. Just tell me-" Sheriff Hicks asked annoyed.

"I didn't do it. My neighbor saw me come home." Dewey said firmly. Judy relaxes at the mention of an alibi.

"The person who tried to kill Tara Carpenter last night was wearing a Ghostface mask." Judy told him.

"I heard." Dewey said.

"We think this murder is connected." Judy said pausing a moment. "No one has more experience with Ghostface killings than you."

"I can think of a few people." Dewey said referring to Sidney, Billy, Jill, Robbie and Gale. Judy goes to him. Sincere.

"What I'm saying is, I could really use your help... Sheriff." Judy said to him.

"Can I go now?" Dewey asked unwillingly to help. Judy eyes him. Sad. Disappointed. A little pissed.

"What happened to you?" Judy asked.

Dewey doesn't answer. Rises to leave his old office when the door flies open and another Deputy enters at a run.

"There's been another Ghostface attack over at the hospital, he tried to kill the Carpenter girl's sister!" Deputy Farney said.

Judy looks over to Dewey who picks up his coat.

"Good luck." Dewey said.

He heads out the door, wanting nothing to do with it. Judy felt disheartened with Dewey and the current situation. How was she going to get through this?
