Chapter 6: The Fire That Burns
Arc 1: Out of Shadows

November 2009 - New York City
Since Cedric had gotten the suit, it's been a bit of a hectic whirlwind if he had to be honest. He wasn't really afraid to be in the limelight anymore. He wasn't afraid to help people in broad daylight anymore. He didn't feel a need to really hide who he was anymore besides hiding his actual secret identity. The last thing he needed was for someone to connect the dots and tie Cedric Harvey to The Black-and-Blue Blur.
He had a lot to protect. If anybody found out about who he was, it could end badly for his mother, his aunt, his grandparents and everyone else in his life that loves him. That's why he had to protect his identity more than ever. Only the closest people he knew, knew about his identity including his best friend and co-worker, Geoff Wright.
Speaking of Geoff, both men walked next to each other as they entered Legacy Foundations. Geoff wore a gray 3-piece suit with a white button-up and a blue tie with black italian leather loafers while Cedric simply wore a pair of dark blue jeans with dark brown leather chelsea boots with a white button-up and a blue vest with a pair of glasses in a black frame on his face.
The two met up for coffee this morning to catch-up for a little while. It started off as the two talking about their personal lives and quickly turned into Geoff geeking out about Cedric's other job as a hero.
"So when you caught that plane in mid-air, was it a struggle or was it just easy?" Geoff whispered as they passed by the desk of some of their co-workers. Geoff asked way more questions about Cedric's power than he had the answer to, in most cases.
"If I'm being honest, it was a bit of a struggle. I've never held that much weight and flown at the same time. Hell before that moment, I hadn't flown in years."
"You serious? Why?" Geoff asked but Cedric simply shrugged his shoulders.
"I don't really know. I prefer running more than flying if I'm being honest."
"So which one are you faster at?" Cedric frowned as he took a seat at a desk near the window like he usually did. That was another one of those questions that he never really knew the answer to. He never tested it. He never felt the need to test his own speed or to test his limits.
"I don't know. I never questioned it before. Now, if you're done asking me questions, I have a question of my own that I would like to ask."
"Shoot," Geoff said before taking a sip of his coffee as he leaned up against Cedric's desk.
"Well, it's more of a request than a question. Your guy, your connect. I need to meet with him, I have some ideas that I might need help with," Cedric said with a serious face.
Geoff turned and looked at his best friend with a smirk on his face.
"If a meet is what you want, a meet is what you shall get," Geoff said with a smile.
"Alright, it'll have to be done before 7. I got a date tonight."
"A date? So he does have a life?" Geoff joked, making Cedric roll his eyes.
"Yeah, I do have a life. I was dating this one girl and I really liked but she hasn't picked up my calls in the past few days. I went to her apartment. And nada. I searched for her around the city, and I couldn't find her. It's like she's completely gone."
"Well, it's been my experience that if a woman wants to leave you, you should let her go. You only chase the ones that don't want to leave. So maybe it's best that she left you, it gives you more time and energy to focus on the ones that won't leave you." In a way, Geoff made sense, in his own unique way.
"I guess, you're right."
"I know I'm right." Geoff answered, making Cedric once again roll his eyes.
"Whatever man, I'm gonna get to work while I can. I have 2 clients that have designs that I need to work on."
"Same man. Lunch, on me today?"
"Sure." Cedric gave Geoff a fist bump before Geoff made his way over to his desk to work on his own work. Cedric opened his laptop and quickly went to work on the designs for his clients.
Kimberly walked into the kitchen with a small smile on her face. Today was a good day compared to the last few days. For the first time in a longtime, she was able to wake up with her lover in a home filled with happiness and in the same city where her son lived. And the feeling that she had knowing that her son was out making a difference in the world, right now she was a woman walking on cloud nine.
Her smile seemingly got bigger as her lover, Paul Hondo came behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. His face still had a few scratches and bruises from his kidnapping but other than that and a few body sores, he was good to go.
"Coffee?"
"I got all the coffee I need right here." Paul flirted right before he started to kiss on the nape of her neck making her start to giggle.
Both of them were so wrapped up in their own little world filled with romance that they forgot about the other occupant in the home, the owner of the home, Vanessa. Vanessa had her hair curled with a pair of beige slacks with a white blouse and white red bottom heels.
"Look now, I already had to hear y'all nasty asses last night. I damn sure don't wanna see it in my kitchen." Vanessa said, making them both jump in fear.
"Sorry, 'Nessa." They both said almost in unison. Vanessa simply chuckled and shook her head as she pulled her phone and started to read some of her text messages before she heard her doorbell ring, making her frown.
"Did you guys order anything?"
"No." Paul answered as he walked towards the kitchen island, grabbing his service weapon off the island and clicking the safety off the pistol as he walked beside Vanessa as she walked towards the door.
Ever since he had been kidnapped by The Monarchy, Paul had been extra careful. He kept a firearm in just about every room when Cedric wasn't home. When he was home however, Paul had to put the firearms away at the request of Kim. Apparently, firearms made Cedric nervous for some odd reason or at least that's what his mother said.
"Who is it?" Vanessa asked as Paul stood beside the door with his pistol cocked and ready to go.
"It's Kayla. I need your help on something." They heard on the other side of the door. Paul let out a sigh of relief as he walked back towards the kitchen putting the safety back on the pistol as Vanessa let out a deep breath before pulling the door open.
"Hey Mikayla, what do you need help with?" Vanessa asked with a smile as Mikayla had just walked past her with a black garment bag.
"I have a really important date tonight and I'm super nervous. And I don't know which dress to pick because I don't know where we're going because technically I asked him out but I didn't say we where we were going which I crazy because I usually-" Mikayla rambled on but Vanessa grabbed both of her hands and gave them a gentle squeeze forcing her to look her in the eyes.
"Mikayla, relax," Mikayla simply nodded and took a deep breath as Vanessa continued to speak, "Now is this a date with who I think it is?" Vanessa could see the smile form on Mikayla's face giving her the answer she needed. Mikayla happily nodded as Vanessa giggled and pulled her into a tight embrace.
"Honey, I'm so happy for you. It's about time you two went out." Vanessa said with a smile She didn't even hear or see her sister walking towards the two.
"And who might this be?" Kimberly asked as she looked at Mikayla with a friendly smile as she offered a hand for a handshake.
"Hi, I'm Mikayla." Mikayla said with a smile as she shook the hand of the mother of her date tonight.
Mikayla. That was a name that both Vanessa and Cedric wouldn't shut up about. It was something about this woman that just captured the attention of both her son and her sister. But the way her son's face would light up when he was talking about her, she knew that there was something between them. Some type of spark that would never die.
"So you're Mikayla. My son has told me so much about you. It's a pleasure to meet the woman who has my son's attention." That comment put an even bigger smile on Mikayla's face.
"Mikayla was just coming by to ask for help with picking out a dress. You mind helping us?" Nessa asked with a smirk on her face as she looked at her sister. Kimberly knew exactly what Nessa was doing. Vanessa was one of the people that was pushing hard for Mikayla and Cedric to be together.
Kimberly chuckled as she shook her head and turned her gaze over to his sister instead of Mikayla.
"That would be lovely," Kimberly smiled as her gaze turned back to Mikayla. Mikayla took a deep breath and gave Kimberly a small smile.
"Paul," Kimberly called as her boyfriend came walking from the kitchen to the entranceway of the apartment, "Would you mind running to the store to grab something sweet for me?"
Paul knew that Kim didn't like sweets at all. He knew that she would only ask for sweets when she needed him to go somewhere. Paul taking the hint simply answered back, "Yes" as he went to their bedroom to change into something more presentable than plaid pajama bottoms.
"Now, let's see these dresses." Kimberly commented with a friendly smile as Vanessa and Mikayla exchanged looks.
Cedric and Geoff were sitting outside on the terrace of a local sandwich shop in Brooklyn. The two friends had been chopping it up since they reunited with each other in the past few weeks. After graduation, they kinda separated, with both going to different colleges. Geoff going to Cornell University in New York and Cedric going to MIT in Boston. They both accomplished what they set out to do and went to some of the most notorious schools in the country and made names for themselves in their industry.
Now, they were working for the same company and were living in the same city.
"Who would've thought that two Westinghouse students would be in The Big Apple?"
"Certainly not Mr. Bruner, that guy was a certified asshole."
"Mega-asshole. He was super-racist."
"Yeah, you remember that time Darrell ended up making Mr. Bruner walk out of the class." Geoff said with a slight chuckle making Cedric chuckle as well.
"Sometimes, it feels like we made it man. Then sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I still feel like I'm chasing that dream we left in Chicago." Cedric said.
"Open a firm of our own. Design the tallest building in the city and have a party with the Kardashians." Geoff replied.
"I don't remember the Kardashians being a part of that dream."
"They weren't, it was a last minute addition right now."
Cedric chuckled as he shook his head. Geoff was a very wild, wild man with a good heart but no mistake about it, he always kept Cedric on his toes with comments or jokes or hell even actions sometimes.
"I think we could still do that."
"Do what?" Cedric questioned as he took a sip of his drink.
"Open our own firm, of course. We just have to wait for another year or two and finish all our projects under our current firm, build a name for ourselves and boom, we can open our firm, Harvey and Wright."
Cedric chuckled, shaking his head at his was the end goal, after all. Take their careers into their own hands and become the creators of their own destiny.
"I think that name needs work."
"Well, we got time to figure it out."
"You're right about that." Geoff then took a sip of his drink as he turned his head looking around the sidewalk. His gaze set upon the sidewalk seeing a girl walk over to the two with a smile.
"I'll be damned," Geoff said as he continued to keep his gaze on the woman.
"What?" Cedric questioned as he turned his head around seeing the exact woman that Geoff was speaking of.
The woman he couldn't take his eyes off of looked to be short. Possibly around 5'3, 5'4 with a warm caramel skin tone with long black straightened with dark brown eyes. She was wearing skinny jeans with a white sweater with a brown leather jacket over it with knee high brown leather boots matching her jacket. Even in her given outfit, she still had curves that seemed to stick out. It was easy to garner the idea that her body gained a lot of attention from members of the opposite sex and maybe even the same sex.
Cedric let out a chuckle as he rose up to his feet while the woman walked towards him with a smile. He pulled her into a hug with a smile.
"Kalani Rose in the flesh. I feel I haven't seen you in forever." Cedric said as the two broke apart.
"Cedric. You look great." She said with a smile.
"Kala, look at you. You're the one looking as beautiful as ever."
"Thanks." Kala replied with a smile as she ran a hand through her hair.
"So what brings you to New York?"
"I should be asking you the same Mr. Big Shot Architect. I never would've thought that you would be an architect back in high school. You were always the big tech nerd." Kala said as she playfully punched.
"I felt the need for a career change and New York, well New York is the best viable option. Now I'm not complaining but what brings my best friend to New York?"
"A story."
"Which one?"
"The Phantom or The Blur as they're calling him now. I came all the way from San Francisco just for him. I'm working for the Bugle."
"I remember you covering him in Chicago. You're dedicated to this guy. Who knows maybe you can convince Jameson that The Blur's not a bad guy."
"Yeah I hope so, I want to be the one to cover him. I want to be the one to give his exclusive to the world. I want to find out who he is, what he is, where he comes from and why he's here. As soon as I saw the shot of him flying through the city, I had to chase him."
"Well, something tells me you'll get your answers and then some." He said with a sense of hope in his words.
"Yeah, I hope so. I gotta run, we're gonna catch up sometime next week, it's not an option." Kala said as she reached into her pocket and grabbed a card handing it to Cedric with a smile. Cedric looked down seeing her name, phone number, and email. What happened next was something that even Cedric wasn't expecting. He was shocked as Kala leaned in and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"Bye." She said to Cedric as she started to walk past him but not before giving Geoff a wave and a lingering pat on the shoulder. Cedric put a hand on his cheek as he turned his head and watched her walk away much like Geoff did.
Cedric and Kala had a sort of unique relationship. They were lifelong best friends who had known each other since Kindergarten. Kala knew just about everything about Cedric and Cedric knew just about everything about her. The only problem is that he had a different love for her than she did for him. For him, he envisioned Kala as the woman of his future, the woman he would ultimately end up marrying. He could've told her how he felt but he didn't. He didn't want her to get close to keep her from finding out who he was or rather who he is. If Kala found out who he was, it could potentially destroy everything he has worked so hard to hide. And it could do the very last thing, he ever wanted to do and that was to put her in harm's way.
"I gotta ask."
"Ask what?"
"Do you still love her, bro?"
"You know I do." Cedric said as he continued watching Kala walk away with a smirk on his face. That smirk disappeared as his phone started to ring in his pocket making him frown as he took out his phone to see it was a call from none other than Madison Maverick.
Unbeknownst to both men, they were being watched by a certain red-headed Russian in an black SUV in an alleyway. Agent Romanoff was determined to try to fulfill her mission even if it pained her. She was assigned to keep an eye on the man who could end up being a potential threat to mankind and the world as they knew it. She didn't believe it but her opinion didn't outweigh the opinion of SHIELD officials and government officials who called the shots.
She needed to keep an eye on him just to make sure he didn't go rogue and also see if he was fit for the Avengers Initiative.
Madison Maverick sat inside of her office with a glass of water next to her laptop. She was dressed in a purple pantsuit with a white blouse with her hair up in a ponytail. For the past few days, the heiress of Maverick Industries had been working hard at trying to find funding for the Michelle Maverick foundation. Her brother had taken over 50% of the funding for the foundation and what's left wasn't gonna be enough to help the millions of people that relied on the foundation.
Madison was trying her best to keep her mother's legacy alive and make sure that everyone knew that Michelle was a loving, helpful person who wanted to help everyone she could. Simply put, that's all Madison wanted to try to do. Heal people and save the world which seemed like the opposite of what her brother wanted.
Miles was a man who craved power, he needed it like he needed oxygen. It was something about power that he just loved. It didn't matter if it was financial power, physical or mental power or any other types of power. If there was power that had to be obtained then he was gonna do so by any means necessary.
Madison was hard at work on her laptop when she heard a knock at her door making her smile as she looked up from the glowing screen.
"Come in." She said, right before the 6'3 hunk walked through the doorway.
"You called?"
"Yeah, I needed to run an idea by you. Why don't you take a seat?" She welcomed him in as he walked into the office, closing the door behind himself. He walked towards her desk and took a seat in the chair in front of her desk.
"So what's this idea?"
"I want to build a hospital. I'm thinking of something that's big enough to help 1500 people at a time. I don't care about the cost, I don't care about the time it's gonna take to build. I just want you to design it and make something that would instill hope to this city and show the people that they have somewhere to go if they need help."
"A beacon of hope," He said as she nodded. "Okay, I can get to work on it but a building of that magnitude is not gonna be cheap and me designing it is not gonna be cheap. And I like to keep close contact with clients so we're gonna be in constant communication. I hope that's not a problem."
"Not all."
"Great, I'll have my office fax over a contract tonight and we can perhaps discuss these ideas over lunch one day," He said as he stood up. She did the same looking into his dark brown orbs with a smile.
"How about over dinner? Tuesday night at my place? My treat?" She offered as she looked at him with eyes of hope as she held her hand out.
A dinner with Madison Maverick wasn't just a normal dinner. She was a local celebrity, really a national name. If anyone saw him with her they could twist it and make it a headline and then he would have unwanted media attention on his personal life. Eyes would be all on him and that would make it extremely hard for him to be The Black-and-Blue Blur. But Madison was a nice girl, the last thing he wanted to do was hurt her feelings. Although it didn't sound like a smart decision, he was gonna go through with it.
"You got me. Tuesday night," He said as he shook her hand exchanging a friendly smile.
"Sounds like a date."
Cedric stood in front of a coffee shop in Harlem. This was the place that Geoff's connect told him to come so that they could meet with each other. Apparently this guy was a super smart computer genius who could work magic with a keyboard.
From Geoff's words, this guy was like a black Tony Stark. Being compared to Tony Stark is a big deal. Stark is essentially a legend, an American Icon. And essentially, he's one of the smartest men in the world. If not then the smartest, just don't tell him that of course then you're gonna inflate Stark's massive ego.
Cedric let out a sigh as he walked to the door grabbing onto the door handle, pulling it open before walking through. Walking in he saw, the shop was just about empty with the exception of a light-skinned black guy sitting in the corner with a low-cut faded with a goatee with a pair of Beats over his ears.
He looked on with a frown as he walked towards the guy.
"Stunt, stuntin is a habit, get like me," the guy sang out with a British accent. Cedric chuckled as he shook his head, he knew the song was called "Get Like Me" by David Banner with Yung Joc and Chris Brown. At least this was a guy with a good music taste.
"Mr. Atkins," Cedric said as he tried to get the attention of the guy but he apparently didn't hear him as he continued to listen to the music. "Mr. Atkins!" Cedric shouted, still getting no response.
"Are you trying to get his attention?" asked one of the baristas. Cedric simply nodded.
"Alright, give me one second." She said as she walked away from the counter for a second. Cedric was a tad bit confused and was wondering what she was going to do. She came back with a doughnut and watched as she launched the doughnut at him, hitting him in the side of the head with the iconic American food.
"Bloody Hell, Susan!" The British man shouted out as the barista walked away leaving Cedric there with him. The Brit turned his gaze to Cedric, looking upon him with his light teal eyes.
"How can I help you mate?"
"Are you Emmett Atkins?"
"I am the one and only. Who's asking?"
"Cedric Harvey. I'm a friend of Geoff Wright."
"Oh you're the mate that Geoff was telling me about. Not gonna lie, I expected you to be bigger." Emmett said, making Cedric chuckle as he looked at the ground.
"I need your help with something. I was told that you could be the one to help me with this."
"With what? I'm quite busy with your friend's other friend. This Blur figure."
"That's actually what I'm here for. Geoff and have a mutual interest when it comes to The Blur. I met him earlier today and he asked that I help him and get something done for him. He needs something that he can give to the people closet to him, that would allow him to know when his friends are in trouble."
"So something like a communicator or something that would send a signal, correct?"
"Yes, precisely."
"I'll do it for 300$."
"150$."
"250$."
"175$."
"I can do 175$ but you have to do me a favor."
"What?"
"My sister is coming to the states in a few weeks. Now she annoys the hell out of me, I need you to keep her entertained while she's here." Cedric sighed as he looked down at the ground.
"Deal." Cedric looked up at Emmett and held his hand out for a handshake. Emmett shook his hand with a smirk.
The time had finally passed and it was night time meaning it was time for his date with Mikayla. This was a date that he was looking forward to for the past week. He was glad that she asked him out or rather demanded that they went out. To say there is some mutual attraction between the two would be an understatement.
Cedric was dressed in a pair of black jeans with a pair of black suede chelsea boots and a white button-up with a gray sweater. He had a pair of glasses on his face with a black frame and his watch. Tonight he was going to take a break, momentarily from being The Blur. A break so Cedric Harvey could have a chance to live. Ever since he put on the cape, he had put his personal life aside and instead focused on being the hero that the world needed but not the man he wanted to be.
Currently, Cedric stood in his room looking at the mirror with a frown on his face. Little did he know his mother stood at the doorway looking at her son with a proud smirk on her face.
"Going somewhere tonight?" She spoke up, making him turn his head, looking at her.
"Yes ma'am, I have a date." He replied, watching as she stepped into the room and strolled over to him, fixing on his outfit.
"With Mikayla right?" She asked, making him smile.
"Yes, I do."
"I met her. She's a nice girl. Now why she decided to date you, I don't know," She joked, making him chuckle, "She came by earlier. I like her. You should've seen the way her face lit up when she talked about you. Just do me a favor, don't let this one go. You deserve to be happy with someone."
"I really like her mom. I just don't want to screw it up. I don't need another April," Cedric said as he looked down at the ground.
"You won't. You've grown since April's death, you've grown stronger, faster. So when that time comes and you have to race to save her, you'll be there. I know it." His mother put a hand under his chin and raised his head forcing him to look into her eyes. A smile made its way on his face as he nodded his head before she pulled him into a tight embrace.
"I love you mom." He said as he wrapped his arms around her.
"I love you too son." She replied with a smile. The two stood there embracing for a few seconds before Paul came running to the door seemingly distraught about something.
"Hey, you guys gotta see this." Paul said, making Cedric and Kim look at him with a puzzled frown as they walked out of the bedroom following him to the living room where they saw Nessa sitting on the couch with a glass of wine in her hands as they watched the TV seeing a building set on fire.
"That's a fire over on 5th avenue. Vanessa, where did you say Mikayla lives?" Kim asked.
"She lives on 5th avenue. That's her building." Nessa said as Cedric looked at the screen with a frown as he clenched his fist. Kim looked over at her son, she knew what he needed to do. Everyone in the room knew his secret with the exception of Paul, she needed to distract him.
"Paul, Can you go grab my phone out of the bedroom? I want to call and make sure she's not in the building." Paul looked at Kim and then turned his head to look at Cedric.
"She's gonna be okay man, I'm sure she made it out." Paul said as he patted Cedric on the shoulder and walked away to the bedroom, going to grab Kimberly's phone.
"Make sure, she's alright. Please." Vanessa said as she turned around looking at Cedric with a look of concern. Cedric gave her a nod and turned his head giving his mother a nod before he zipped past her grabbing his suit from his bedroom and back out to the balcony, grabbing a hold of the door sliding it open. He walked out onto the balcony and bolted up into the sky off to the rescue.
Cedric floated above looking down at the building that seemingly was covered in flames. Fires didn't happen often in New York City. Especially to a building of this magnitude. It wasn't really a tall building but it was still an 8 story building that housed many citizens of the city.
He used his x-ray vision looking into the building seeing 6 citizens who seemingly were unconscious, including MIkayla who was out on the 6th floor. There were 2 ways he could go about it. He could fly around making a cyclone, taking the oxygen out of the building, causing the fire to die out and rush in, pulling everyone out. There was some good to this plan but also some bad. The good thing is it would leave the building up somewhat, the structure wouldn't actually be compromised and it would allow the city to just repair what was damaged and it would be back up and running in about 3 to 4 months. The bad thing was that it could possibly cause some respiratory issues for some of the people trapped inside. And another thing, he had never done it before so he wouldn't know how fast he would have to fly in a circle to create the cyclone. He didn't exactly know if it would work. He was only going off the assumption that it would take the oxygen out of the fire and since fire can't exist without oxygen, the fire would have to stop.
The 2nd option was very simple. Extremely simple. Rush in and rush the people back out. The good thing was that he had done something like this before so it would be easy for him and he wasn't really concerned if anyone saw him or not because if they did, they would see a new symbol for hope. The only bad thing is that it would allow the building to just crumble and fall, that's if the firefighters could contain the fire and stop the spread.
He was wasting time, just sitting there waiting. He needed to quickly do something, he was running out of time. Cedric bolted towards the building rushing into the fire. He bolted through the window of the 7th floor, grabbing a hold of an older male who was down on the ground.
He rushed out of the building placing him on the sidewalk and bolted back inside once again. He came back out this time carrying two women and bolted back inside. He came out this time with a man and woman and bolted back inside this time to save Mikayla. Mikayla was down unconscious with soot on her body. He bent down grabbing a hold of her, gently picking her back up. His eyes trailed down examining her closely. A frown found its way on his face as out of the corner of his eye, he saw a figure wearing all-black with a hood over their head. He looked the figure up and down seeing the person possibly standing at about 6'1 or 6'0, most likely a male. He couldn't really examine the possible culprit as flames spew out from their palms causing Cedric to quickly turn his back, and shield Mikayla from the flames.
Cedric felt the heat on his exposed skin but oddly enough didn't feel it on the parts of his body that was covered with his suit. But that wasn't important. Mikayla was important right now. He needed to quickly get Mikayla away and get her to safety. He formed a force field of blue energy around him and bolted through the window, breaking the glass as he flew out of the building. Cedric descended down onto the sidewalk, holding her in his arms seeing as several people were staring at him. The looks on people's faces told the story. Here was a being with these unimaginable powers standing amongst them. The people fo Earth had never seen something like this before and now there was someone amongst them who was like a god to them.
Cedric walked on over to a stretcher that was brought out by EMTs and gently placed Mikayla down onto the stretcher before he took a few steps back. He looked around seeing the flashes coming from the cell phones and various camera devices, he took a deep breath before he bolted up into the air, flying away from the scene. He did his part which was get everyone out and know he was gonna let the firefighters and first responders do their job.
As he flew off, he had two things on his mind: If Mikayla was gonna be okay and who was the fire guy or girl and if he caused the fire or not.
