Chapter 42: Explosion! Fish-Man Arlong's Fierce Attack from the Sea!
The air surrounding Arlong Park was now heavy with intensity. The showdown finally came down to the two captains. Who would win the Siege of Arlong Park? All the villagers looked on with alarm. Either they would die at the fish-men's hands, or they would finally be freed after eight long years of suffering tyranny.
Arlong couldn't help but cackle in mockery of what Luffy just spouted. Was this rubber boy actually serious when he said that?! He couldn't believe that ignorant nonsense!
"You?! King of the Pirates!?" He asked as he picked up a piece of rubble, "Don't make me laugh! A puny human such as yourself could have no possible hope of conquering the Grand Line!"
"One man already did; a puny human like myself to boot," replied Luffy, "His name was Gold Roger! And if he could do it, then so can I!" Clearly, there was no sense in denying that Luffy was right about that. Roger was indeed a human, and he did manage to conquer the Grand Line. Arlong was seriously tempting fate now with his boast.
"I'll give you that, but Roger was the exception," said Arlong, unable to deny that fact, "How can a puny rubber boy like you possibly live up to Roger's legacy? You can't even crush a pillar between your jaws!"
"He's right," said Sanji, "There's no way a human can do something like that. If those jaws got a hold of you, they would do a lot more than just leave some bite marks…they'll snap through your bones like a knife through butter!"
"Don't be so sure about that, Sanji," said Ragnar, "Sharks may have that advantage in the water, but it all depends on the size, and from what I hear, sawsharks like Arlong don't have that strong a bite force when compared to others. Besides, I know from experience that whales have much stronger bites."
"Your Viking friend here is right about that," Celosia added in, "That's why Arlong there doesn't dare challenge Willy. He knows that sharks can't compare to orcas when it comes to the strength of their bites."
Arlong only stood there, eyeing Luffy as he chuckled in his seemingly well-founded confidence. Sure, Luffy managed to score a few hits on him, but he was stronger and faster than any normal human, and this boy would fall just like all the rest…or so he thought.
"Yeah, so what!? Quit your bragging!" Luffy demanded as he punched the base of one of the ruined columns with his fist, "You're not that awesome if you place yourself on a pedestal! Besides, crushing stones with your teeth isn't that smart." Luffy still let the anger that flowed through him when he saw Nami crying channel his thoughts. He didn't give a crap of how superior Arlong thought he was, he was going to still beat him black and blue.
"Fool! That's not the point!" Arlong growled, "My point is that every member of the human race is ignorant and weak! What good are you if you can't even haul yourself onto dry land!?" With that, Arlong then lunged at Luffy, attempting to bite him again, but Luffy smugly dodged it, grabbing two of Hatchan's fallen cutlasses, and picking them up.
"As a matter of fact, I'm useless without my friends to help me out!" Luffy declared, positioning the two swords as he got into a battle stance: one sword was held in front of him, while the other was raised above his head. Seeing the sight only impressed every other Straw Hat except for Ragnar.
"Huh?! No way! Luffy's a swordsman?!" Sanji asked in disbelief.
"Aye, trained in the ways of the Vikings," said Ragnar, "But nowhere near as good as Zoro or myself. Watch, and you'll see what I'm talking about." As they looked on, Luffy began to duel Arlong with the heavy swords, but each slash he dealt was only parried by Arlong's serrated nose, which was able to fend off each blow like a main gauche dagger.
"Is this a joke?! You think yourself a master swordsman now, do you?" Arlong asked in disbelief, "You honestly hope to defeat me with techniques like that?" Arlong then sent one of the swords in Luffy's hands flying towards the ground, the hilt sticking out like a sore thumb. "I hope you realized that this isn't a game." Yet Luffy only moved in for an upwards slash at Arlong's head, only for the shark fish-man to catch the blade in between his teeth, shattering it with a single bite. "That's enough! Now just die already!"
"SHUT YOUR GOB!" Luffy bellowed as he unleashed a small, yet powerful Gum-Gum Pistol right into Arlong's face, sending him flying backwards once more. Yet what astounded everyone who looked on was that the force of the punch was powerful enough to shatter Arlong's teeth! Nobody even noticed that Luffy's arm turned that same dark, cast iron hue again. All the villagers were stunned at the outcome. However, Luffy didn't seem to care as he stood and looked down at the opponent who enslaved Nami all these years. "You're right, I'm not a master swordsman, you bastard! I'm a terrible sailor, I definitely can't cook! I can't even shoot an arrow or tell a good lie!"
"Hey! Just stick to the archery dammit!" Usopp yelled.
"But I do know this," Luffy continued, "Without my friends to help me, I would've died a long time ago! You insult me, you insult all of my crew too!"
"So, you fully admit to how pathetic you are?" Arlong asked with a chuckle, "You may be a fool, but you certainly are honest. How must your crew feel having to tolerate your inane idiocy day in and day out? I imagine that they're quite sick of it. Yet still, I can't help but wonder why they honestly tried to desperately save their half-witted fool of a captain."
"Better to have half my wits than having absolutely no wits at all," Luffy only growled back.
"There's certainly merit to your words, I'll give you that," Arlong admitted as he placed his jaw back on its hinges, standing to confront Luffy again, "But even so, someone like you doesn't even deserve a ship or a crew. What good is a hapless birdbrained captain to them? What can you even possibly do?"
"I can kick your ass, just like I kicked Don Krieg's ass!" Luffy declared, confirming his latest victory over Krieg for himself, "And I swear, I won't even stop there. I'll do the same to anyone who threatens my friends too! I don't need to do anything else, because I've got a crew that'll finish what I start! They'll do what they always do best, and so will I! That's our true strength!"
Arlong only still glared right at Luffy, seemingly unimpressed, but the villagers, the Vikings and even the Sun Pirates were unable to help themselves but stare in admiration of this boy. He was modest to a fault, and had the undying trust of his crew – something which made all the Straw Hats smile in admiration. It soon dawned on Arlong that Luffy was more of a threat than he initially anticipated, and the cheering of the villagers and war cries of the Vikings seemed to confirm it.
"CHEER ALL YOU WANT, YOU WORTHLESS BUGS!" Arlong bellowed out at the villagers, "IT WON'T CHANGE A DAMNED THING!" At that moment, Arlong's teeth popped right out of his mouth, and new ones slowly formed in, just as swiftly.
"He's got new TEETH!" Luffy shouted, "How the hell is that even possible!?" It was clearly evident that Luffy was about to get a lesson in marine biology.
"One of the many benefits of my kind," Arlong explained, "I am a shark, so new teeth will grow one right after the other, and with each set they become stronger, and stronger…endlessly and as many as it takes!" With that, Arlong then pulled out the new set of teeth in one hand, and as soon as the other set formed, he did the same with his left, until he had two sets of his own teeth as weapons, "This is but one of the many gifts that we fish-men possess."
"That's so cool!" Luffy exclaimed, clearly in awe at this new development. Yet he also knew he had to pay attention to the coming battle ahead.
"If you haven't realized the superior power of fish-men, then I can guarantee, you definitely will experience it firsthand!" Arlong declared as he began snapping the two sets of his own teeth in his hands and yelled, "Tooth Attack!" In an instant, Arlong began to attack Luffy with the teeth in his hands acting like naturally produced bear traps. Luffy tried to grapple Arlong in an attempt to get out of the way, but to no avail. He only screamed in pain as Arlong struck again, and again, dealing several lacerations and shocking everyone…as he attacked one of his own subordinates! Luffy had managed to use him for cover as a shield.
"Arlong…stop…it hurts…" The poor fish-man pleaded much to Arlong's shock and horror.
"WHAT?! MY BROTHER!" He shouted in terror as the fish-man passed out, with Luffy being unharmed. The shark's horror soon gave way to anger at Luffy, "Now you're dead, you stretchy rubber freak!" He growled, "How dare you use one of my injured brothers as a shield!?"
"I don't give a crap what you say," Luffy said, "If you think I'm gonna fall for a freaking tooth attack, you've got another thing coming!" He only made eye contact with Ragnar, and nodded to his quartermaster for what he had in mind.
"It seems as if our captain has a plan," said the Viking as he rose, changing into his full animal form, smiling in the process, "Sanji, just watch and learn. Now you guys get to see how a lion does battle!"
"Tooth Attack!" Arlong shouted again, trying as best as he could to bite Luffy, only for the rubber-boy to avoid and dodge, even going so far as to jump away from the shark's attack against the concrete floor, and his attempt to use the rubble as a shield was rendered obsolete. As he jumped back, Arlong lunged forward, closing the distance between them both, and finally managing to land a hit on Luffy, right in the left pectoral. Luffy let out a great cry of pain. He hadn't been bitten by a shark before, but it absolutely hurt. Arlong's birth as a saw-shark also meant that his teeth had barbed points, like the heads of a harpoon.
"RAGNAR! DO IT NOW!" Luffy bellowed out, and in that instant, Ragnar ran on all fours, despite being hindered by the lionfish venom Wapanda dealt him earlier, and pounced upon Arlong, sinking his claws into the shark fish-man's skin and biting him right on the shoulder. Arlong instantly let go of Luffy and threw Ragnar off of him, but the leonine Viking only landed on all fours. Luffy stood up as he pulled the shark teeth from his side and smiled at Arlong confidently, "Didn't expect a lion's bite to be that strong, didn't ya!?" He asked with confidence as Ragnar made his way towards his captain's side, growling at the shark fish-man.
"So, you managed to wound me," Arlong remarked, "I'll admit, a lion's bite has more force behind it, but fangs are only useful when they come with powerful jaws such as mine. Then they're deadly!" As he finished speaking, Arlong bit Luffy right in the elbow. Luffy only screamed out in agony as he felt the barbs sink in, but he wasn't going to let that stop him at all. In a flash, he grabbed Arlong by the back of the head and as he slammed his foot down, brought the fish-man down hard onto his back on the concrete. The force of the impact was so strong, Arlong was forced to let go, allowing Luffy the chance to escape those maws.
"Is his arm okay?" Usopp asked.
"If he took a single step back, his arm would've been shorn off right at the shoulder!" Genzo muttered.
"Yeah, but he wasn't thinking about how shark teeth work," said Sanji, "That would've required a bit more brainpower. At least he was smart to have Ragnar act as backup for a while."
Arlong lay on the ground for a brief moment, then sat back up as he regained consciousness. As Luffy rose to his feet, the scowl on his face said it all: he was pissed and wanted to end this fight once and for all.
"Alright…where is he!?" He asked, noticing that Arlong was nowhere to be found.
"Luffy! The harbor!" Nami shouted, pointing to a purple tinged dorsal fin sticking out of the water. Instantly, everyone knew what that meant.
"There he is!" Willy shouted as he tended to Hatchan's wounds. If only he was able to help, he would have pommeled Arlong within five minutes, but he knew that he was going to have to sit this one out. This was now Luffy's fight.
"Oh no! This is exactly what I was afraid would happen," Ragnar muttered, "Luffy, he's going to be twice as powerful now!"
"What the!? How did he get past the shield wall!" Ingrid asked.
"Oh crap, this isn't good!" Sanji growled, "His abilities double in strength when he's underwater."
Beneath the surface, Arlong only floated down towards the sea floor, creating some distance between himself and Luffy. He would show this boy the true power and strength of fish-men!
'Once my momentum in the water builds up, it's impossible to stop me!' Arlong thought with a sinister grin, 'This is precisely the type of ability that makes us fish-men all the more superior!' As soon as he was far enough, Arlong only sped forward to the surface. "It's time!" He cackled, "SHARK DARTS!" Arlong then sprang up out of the water, and over the shield wall, crashing into Arlong Park. Luffy was sent flying in the air, but managed to land right on his front.
"What was that!?" Usopp asked in horror.
"A…A fish-man torpedo!?" Sanji added.
"That bacraut!" Ragnar growled as he got up, turning into his hybrid form and ready to help.
"No, RAGNAR! Just stay right there!" Luffy ordered, clutching his belly.
"What!? But this isn't a holmgang," replied the Viking, "You can count on us to help you, just as you said we could."
"I KNOW WHAT I SAID! JUST LISTEN TO WHAT I'M SAYING NOW!" Luffy bellowed out, silencing Ragnar, "Everyone listen up! It's not the first time I've been cut like this, and it definitely won't be the last time either. But these wounds…they pale in comparison to the pain that Nami suffered for the past eight years! It truly disgusts me to know that she had to suffer in silence alone for so long. No one deserves that kind of punishment."
"Luffy…" Nami softly muttered, tears welling up in her eyes. She was so touched that Luffy would fight for her. She only watched as he got back onto his feet.
"No matter how many times I get knocked down…" Luffy began, "…or how severe my injuries get…I won't ever stop…until I kick that bastard's ass!" He then yelled at the heavens, "I WILL ALWAYS GET BACK UP! YOU HEAR ME, YOU SHARK-FINNED BASTARD!"
"Wow…I'm impressed you could dodge that," Arlong's voice responded, and the shark fish-man emerged from the hole he made in his own wall, cackling madly, "Such noble ambitions of yours, boy! But the longer you evade your death, the more painful I assure you that it will be in the end." Luffy only knew what was coming as Arlong yelled again, "SHARK DARTS!" With another charge, he dove right downwards towards Luffy. However, the captain of the Straw Hats only dodged it, and Arlong's nose landed right into the ground, inches away from the shield wall, while the concrete cracked with a sickening crunch from the impact.
"Whoa! What kinda bones does that crazy shark have!?" Sanji asked in pure disbelief, "His nose punched the ground!"
"He has none," explained Celosia, "Just like all sharks, Arlong's skeleton is completely made from cartilage."
"SHARK DARTS!" Arlong shouted again, lunging straight at Luffy, and managing to shred part of his waistcoat. However, Luffy fortunately dodged the blast again. Once more, Arlong tried again, but Luffy managed to dodge as Arlong descended back into the sea. The shield wall, by this point had broken off, as none of the Vikings wanted to be struck by that fearsome attack, and they all lined up on opposite ends of the harbor.
"Hey Luffy, hide!" Usopp shouted, "Arlong went back into the sea again!"
"Hurry up, big bro!" Yosaku yelled out, "You gotta hide from him!"
"He's setting his sights on ya right this moment!" Johnny added.
"Quickly! Find some cover!" Ragnar shouted. He was not keen on his captain seeing Valhalla just yet.
"I won't hide!" Luffy declared, "I know you guys want me to hide, but I have absolutely no intention of acting like a coward! I'm gonna catch him and break his nose! So, bring it on, Arlong! Come back up here and fight me like a man!"
Beneath the waves, Arlong only smiled as he sank further down towards the sea floor. Luffy certainly was bold for not finding cover, but even so, Arlong would have still been able to find him even if he did.
"You've got some nerve," He chuckled, "For, you realize that it's pointless to try and hide from me, not when I can sense your electrical signals."
Above the water's surface, everyone only watched on. Luffy either had balls of steel or a death wish. Nobody could believe that this boy would definitely be able to survive another one of Arlong's attacks now.
"Didn't you hear us telling you that you should hide earlier!?" Usopp asked in sheer disbelief, "You barely escaped his last attacks! Even if he lands one hit on you, he'll kill you! Luffy, please just listen to us: go and hide!" Yet Luffy only still stood there, and from afar, Ragnar and the others seemed to finally understand. He was determined to see this through.
"Now, Gum-Gum Shield!" Luffy shouted as he grabbed the fingers of one hand with the other, and stretched them before his face. What everyone saw was truly shocking: Luffy's fingers turned black, with that same metallic hue to them.
"Hey wait! What's he doing!?" Yosaku asked.
"I don't think that's gonna stop the attack!" Johnny muttered, frightened for his friend.
Beneath the surface, Arlong finally made it to the bottom of the sea floor, preparing himself for another attack. He was lucky that the shield wall managed to break off. That way, he wouldn't have to waste the energy on those Vikings.
"I'll get double the speed from this distance; this time I'll pierce your heart, rubber-man!" Arlong muttered, then charged straight up towards the surface again. "SHARK DARTS!" As he broke the surface of the water, Arlong suddenly found himself stopped in his flight path! Luffy had managed to block that pointed nose with his Gum-Gum Shield! Now, as they were sent flying, Luffy let go of Arlong, who crashed into the roofing of his compound, while the Straw Hats' captain simply landed on his feet on the top floor.
"Oh no! Did he get hit!?" Usopp asked, terrified for his captain's life.
"He's fine, Usopp," Sanji told the archer, "He somehow managed to avoid it!"
"Nice! He knew he couldn't hide," Ragnar muttered, "So he used the shield to stop Arlong's momentum!"
Luffy happily stuck to the wall of Arlong Park, like a fly or a spider, happily chuckling to himself.
"It's over!" He declared, "That attack won't work now!" Luffy was confident that he had this down. The battle, the siege, both were as good as won!
"SHARK DARTS!" Arlong roared out as he emerged upwards from below Arlong Park, forcing Luffy to let go and fall.
"You bastard! That doesn't count!" Luffy shouted, "That was just a lucky shot!" Then he entwined his fingers making a net like shape, and held the back of his head. Whatever Arlong was planning, he was ready.
"Now DIE!" Arlong growled as he lunged straight for Luffy like a crossbow bolt.
"Fat chance!" Luffy defiantly replied, "Gum-Gum Finger Net!" He then shouted, stretching out his fingers making a larger net in an attempt to trap Arlong. It worked instantly, and soon, Arlong found himself trapped like a shark in a casting net. All his momentum came to a screeching halt, and as Luffy let go, Arlong found himself falling towards the ground. As his arms stretched back, Luffy held his feet together so that the bottoms were touching each other, "Now…Gum-Gum Spear!" he shouted, kicking Arlong simultaneously with his toes.
Arlong landed into the hard concrete with a sickening crack of the floor beneath him. Luffy, meanwhile, grabbed the upper railing of Arlong Park and landed safely on his feet. From outside, the villagers all cheered in celebration believing that they were finally free from Arlong's control. The shark fish-man lay there motionless as Luffy began to descend back towards the ground.
"Is it over?" Ragnar asked to himself, "Did we actually win?"
"No, it's only going to get worse," Willy muttered, "Arlong's been known to get up from fights like these. His endurance is incredible."
'Uh-oh, something doesn't feel right…' Luffy thought to himself. In that instant, he was right. Arlong opened his eyes with seething white hot rage, his pupils having turned into slits like those of a crocodile! This time, the fish-man was out for blood!
"Oh no! That's not good!" Celosia muttered.
"Do you see the hatred in his eyes?" Genzo asked as Nojiko looked on aghast.
"Oh crap! I know that look anywhere," Sanji commented, "It's the same look that Sea Kings make before they snap! He must've snapped with Luffy's last attack!"
"I've never seen his eyes like that before…" Nami whispered, sheer terror eating at her heart.
"Arlong…he's fallen into the Berserkergang!" Ragnar muttered to himself, "He's out to kill now!"
"YOU WRETCHED FUCKING HUMAN!" Arlong bellowed as he grabbed Luffy by the hair and spun him like a rag doll, "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME!? A MIGHTY FISH-MAN!" Arlong then flung Luffy right into Arlong Park, causing him to crash land into a pile of rubble. Now everyone was terrified by what was transpiring. Luffy, though only sat up, well aware that he was out of the frying pan, and plunged straight into the fire.
"Whoa…that was crazy," he muttered to himself, "That didn't actually hurt, but I can tell that he's really pissed off now. I gotta end this soon, or I may actually end up dying." Arlong then growled as he charged straight for Luffy, intent on crushing his head, but the boy only dodged out of the way as Arlong punched through the wall, but as he did so, he moved his arm upwards. By the time he pulled it out, he was holding a fearsome looking weapon – an axe with six heads all mounted to the shaft, giving the resemblance of shark teeth. "Oh man…what is that thing?!"
"The Shark Saw!" Nami shouted, having obviously seen that weapon before.
"That thing is gigantic!" Johnny remarked, eyes wide with terror.
"The shark saw, Arlong's signature sword," Hatchan muttered.
"That thing is a sword!?" Ragnar asked the octopus, "It doesn't even have a guard or a pommel on it! It's not even shaped like a sword!"
Arlong took one swing of the Shark Saw, and leapt up towards Luffy, who was now on the roofing of Arlong Park. With a single blow, the shark fish-man made a devastating downward slash towards Luffy, but once more, the rubber-boy managed to dodge the attack, getting onto another layer of roof. Arlong continued to attack again and again, chasing Luffy further up towards the highest levels of the compound.
"He won't stop!" Dr. Nako shouted, "Luffy will get cornered!"
Much to the doctor's horror, he was right. Luffy was now on the top floor of Arlong Park, and found himself facing a window on the left-hand side. As Arlong readied his blade for another attack, Luffy dove into the window, as the axe blades cut through wood, stone, and glass. It was at that moment that Ragnar noticed Nami's eyes widen with shock. She knew exactly what that room was!
"That's the room where…!" she muttered, knowing exactly what would happen now. 'That's the map room!'
Meanwhile, Luffy only sat on the floor, catching his breath as he tried desperately to recover his stamina.
"That was definitely a little too close for comfort," he muttered, watching as Arlong himself now entered the room.
"I have you now, rubber-man!" The shark growled, "There is nowhere left for you to run. Let's settle this once and for all, you and I, here – in the highest level of Arlong Park! Finally, the hour of your death is at hand!" Yet as Arlong spoke, Luffy managed to get a look at his surroundings.
"What is this room? It's full of paper," Luffy remarked, noticing a lot of maps and charts on the wall or hanging from clips attached to strings that hung from the ceiling.
"This isn't just any ordinary room," Arlong replied, "This is the very room where I had Nami draw all of her sea charts for us."
"This is Nami's room?" Luffy asked, finally remembering what Nami told him after Zoro defeated Hatchan.
"Correct, and these navigational charts are what she's been working on for the past eight years," Arlong explained, "Just look around you, boy. These maps you see before you are far more valuable than any amount of treasure. You see, to us fish-men, collecting data about the ocean is a relatively simple affair, but to assemble all that data and raw information into a useful chart is a far more difficult task. That's why we needed a cartographer. Now, you hopefully understand why I'm so keen on keeping that girl in my possession. She's absolutely brilliant! The accuracy of her charts is beyond comparison. She's too good for human trash like you! Her talents should be used solely for building up the mighty Arlong Empire! Do you understand now?! Nami belongs to me, and you're interfering in our business, you human scum! She's not your friend!"
Luffy, however, clearly wasn't listening anymore. All he could see was the thought of Nami crying as she tearfully drew charts for Arlong for years. The very thought of her having suffered in silence like that for so long…it truly sickened him to the very depths of his soul. Here and now, Arlong Park would finally fall!
"Is that so?" Luffy asked, glaring daggers at Arlong with an immeasurable fury towards him, "Well, I don't care! I don't give a crap what you say! Nami is our navigator, and I'm setting her free whether you like it or not!" Now, with a fire in his eyes, Luffy knew exactly what he had to do. Today, Arlong would fall, today, Ragnarok would come for the Arlong Empire!
A/N: Luffy definitely is giving Arlong a run for his money for certain! It all comes down to this moment now! Taking the fight to the map room was probably one of the biggest mistakes Arlong ever made. So, be ready for the epic conclusion to the siege!
Now, I made mention that Willy's crew also had a Narwhal fish-man. In the Viking Age, narwhals were definitely significant to the Norse economy. The Vikings used to hunt these whales not only for their meat and fat, but also they would hunt the males exclusively for their great tusks, which they would then take back to Europe from the Arctic and either turn them into sculptures or trade them with the civilizations they encountered in their travels across Europe, Africa and Asia. The Vikings would even sell these tusks without revealing their origins, which gave rise to the myth of the unicorn in the Middle Ages. After the Viking Age came to an end, narwhals were still hunted in the waters around Scandinavia, and the tusks of the males would be turned into stunning ivory artifacts well until the ban. The most famous example of these artifacts is the Coronation Chair of Denmark, which is made completely out of narwhal tusks. Although the chair itself dates back to the 17th century, it still is a testament to how these beasts were still hunted in Scandinavia long after the Viking Age came to an end.
This brings us into the reason why the Vikings got into the practice of whaling. Back in the Middle Ages, most peoples considered anything that lived in the sea as a fish, including marine mammals. So, the Vikings easily hunted walruses, porpoises and whales.
I also mentioned that Arlong can sense the electrical signals of those who would hide from his Shark Darts attack. This is actually something that all sharks have evolved with. That's how they are so easily able to sense their prey and attack. It's one of the traits that makes them such fearsome predators. Lastly, I also want to mention a few things about bite forces.
Celosia mentioned that an orca's bite force is far more powerful than a shark's. In fact, orcas have one of the strongest bite forces of any animal on the planet, measuring in at up to 20,000 psi. Lions, however, have a strong bite force as well, up to a thousand psi. As for sharks, like Ragnar said, it all depends on their size. The great white for instance has a bite force of 4,000 psi, due to its massive size.
Now, as for shark teeth, I mentioned that Arlong's were barbed. All sharks come with a variety of different shaped teeth. This is another trait that makes sharks so fearsome. Say "Jaws" to anyone, and they'll know which animal's dental work that you're referring to. The main reason that a shark's teeth are so sharp is, as Arlong said, they're constantly being replaced. New teeth wait, row upon row, and then move forward like a dental conveyer belt, replacing those that are damaged and worn. Different sharks also have different teeth. For example, the tiny cookie-cutter shark has the largest teeth relative to its body size, and can bite cookie sized chunks out of a humpback whale. So, now you know in advance about a certain shark fish-man we will meet in the Fish-Man Island arc. Tiger sharks, though, have dual purpose teeth. The tooth itself has a pointed tip for impaling, and a serrated bottom edge for cutting. With such weaponry, a tiger shark is capable of cracking open the shell of a sea turtle. Lastly, the sand tiger shark has jagged doglike teeth, and often swims around looking fearsome and dangerous with its snaggletooth mouth always open. The basking shark, however, has tiny teeth, and filters tons of water per hour, but they're much more friendly as they only feed on microscopic plankton. Even the biggest fish in the sea, the whale shark, has similar tiny teeth, but it prefers crustaceans over larger game.
Arlong's usage of his teeth for weapons also reflects how shark teeth have historically been used as weapons, especially in some Polynesian cultures. For example, the Hawaiians had a macuahuitil like weapon of their own, but instead of obsidian blades, they lined these fearsome clubs with shark teeth. However, in Europe during the Middle Ages, they were used as a different kind of weapon. It was thought, back then, that fossilized shark teeth could detect poison in food and wine.
This brings up another interesting point I should mention. Arlong has never tried to eat Luffy. Most sharks are omnivorous, with a varied diet. When food is scarce, they even have an internal rationing system, as a way to preserve food in the stomach to delay digestion, and they're famous for swallowing strange things, mainly taking a bite out of anything to see if it's edible. The point of this is that some evidence proves that sharks don't even like human flesh, contrary to popular belief. In the 16th century, a sailor was swallowed whole by a shark, and then regurgitated live!
Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed this chapter, and stay tuned for the epic conclusion of this great battle!
