Chapter 2 Team 10 formed

Asuma POV

2 Days Before

Getting called into an office with the Hokage who happened to be my dad there were numerous shinobi in the room so Jonin rank and I even spotted Kurenai. Taking a cigarette from one of my many pockets in my vest pocket's I got to light up only to have it snatched.

"How many times do I have to tell you, smoking will kill you." Kurenai leveled a glare at me with those brilliant red eyes.

"Oi Kurenai I'm just….using it as training." A looked away at the stupid excuse i wouldn't be punched in here would I.

Kurenai soon huffed in anger as she dropped the cigarette and stomped on it. "Hey that was a perfectly nice one…" I tried to make a retort but soon had a kunai to my throat.

'Yea it wise to shut up.' I lifted my hands in surrender and she smiled. At that someone couched bringing both my and Kurenai's attention to the front to Hokage-Sama.

"Hmm sorry for the disturbance." I bowed my head with a little sweat coming down at the scene I did.

"Okay if we're going back to the topic the new batch of academy students graduated and we do need Jonin Sensei." Again everyone nodded not wanting to make a trouble for the old man that arguably can kick everyone's ass combined.

"This year in specific is filled with quite a bunch with tons of potential." Hokage-Sama added.

Looking around the room there could be 8 Jonin in the room plus Kakashi but he's late so he couldn't refute being a Sensei anyways. '27 kids hmm wonder how many will pass the real test.'

"Ultimately I thought all of you were best suited for the role of Sensei for these student's if you really refuse though I will have to hand the students to another Jonin willing to take them on." At that everyone in the room nodded once again.

After a while of Hokage-Sama talking about responsibility and to pass on the Will of Fire to your students and show them what it really means we all picked up a several sheets on all three of the students we would take on…if you want anyways.

'Ino Yamanaka…overall academy ratings are…alright but not spectacular. Choji Akimichi who's scores a little bit below Ino in almost every category…Shikamaru Nara…what the hell how did this kid not fail…this kids grades are…awful.' Looking a bit below the report on his grades there were notes on the bottom of the page.

'Note: Mostly slept in class and had to have the instructor wake him up and on some days multiple times… Would occasionally leave school early with friends.' That's why…This kid.

There was quickly a dry smile on my face re reading all the reports. 'I know that these reports really don't mean squat as you could remember some baby answer's on a test and score the highest but still be utter shit for a shinobi. I could attest to that, I was really rough around the edges but still came out a good shinobi after all. Maybe these kids are hiding something they don't know.

"I'll take this students." I turned my head at Kurenai looking at with a low grin.

"I'll take mine too." Though she did look back at me my attention was back at dad.

He simply nodded and put a stamp on a different page.

"I assume you all know when teams are selected in the academy classroom is always the same." Those who did kick there genin all nodded and various arrays of smiles in the room as most people in the room filed out of the room one at a time.

Present Time…

Walking into the Academy I looked at it and it didn't change one bit huh. Smiling and looking at Kurenai who admired the familiar scenery of the Academy before we continued on the designated room. We passed by some Jonin who came early about 6 of them with 18 genin. Walking past them silently as we reach the doors and open them we were seen as everyone turned there attention to them.

Walking to one of the farther training grounds inside the village where ones that really weren't used other than spars that didn't damage the land as there was multiple more outside the village if you take one of the paths out of the village. I had these kids try to institute themselves to me and while Choji's attitude was very docile he wanted to protect his friends and comrades which is good but sometimes you need to man up and that why I'm here to teach…if they pass…

Pulling out one of my cigarettes and lighting it up in front of the kids. "Yo know that's going to kill you ya'know." She was right it would kill me.

"Rather die than listen to you talk about SAsUkE-KuN anymore." I whispered it out in order to avoid another women's wrath but she manage to hear something and just glared at me. I mean could you blame me she had been talking about that Uchiha for so god damn long I thought she was going to ramble for what like a minute or two and yet she has not stopped talking since she started which was a full ten minutes.

Making it to the training field we came at we all approach a tree with enough shade to cover as the kids sit down and I keep my standing stance and look at the last of the kids as I lifted my hand eager for him to introduce himself.

"Shikamaru" POV

Telling Asuma about myself honestly is something I found a bit harder as I really only just met the man and for that matter everyone here so I did feel a bit distant from the rest but acting like it and staying away from everyone won't help me.

I look up at Asuma as he gave me and me especially a once over the rest unlike them. 'Why's he looking at me like that…wait I'm a Nara I'm supposed to be lazy I forget about this…ehh oh well.' Tilting my head as Asuma returned his gaze back at the rest of Ino and Choji.

"Well as you know you guys are genin yes? But you all have yet to be called true ninja's as there still one more test left to give you." At that I looked a bit fully while Choji was anxious and Ino was still standoffish.

"Why? We just got out of the academy." I heard her though I kept my attention on Asuma as he let out a smirk that was also having malicious intent.

"Truth be told there is a 66% average failing of kids your level." With his smirk and eyes radiating the same vibes Ino was left a bit shook while Choji did look more anxious as he started to eat slightly faster from his potato chips.

I saw him glance at me to only be slightly confused as I didn't react the way he wanted.

"And to be honest I did tell Hokage-Sama I wasn't feeling having a team so I could just drop you all now." Now at the two others Ino's eyes did widen as her hands did clench in concern and even Choji stopped eating.

"Though maybe if you impress me enough I might take one of you as my apprentice." He tone of voice made it seem as there wasn't a choice to even talk back for even a snarky remark it was impressive that him with just words manage to shake them so much….but I know the feeling sometimes words hit hard but usually physical "words" are more painful.

"You all have about an hour to choose which one of you will be the lucky or else I'll just give you something so hard a Jonin level Ninja while have to think twice about it." At that he turned around did a handsign we couldn't see as he disappeared in a puff of smoke.

The silence that was at the training field was defeating as both Choji and Ino were still processing the info in there head not wanting to believe it. I simply lay down in the shade and close my eyes to rest. In all honesty I didn't feel tired but I couldn't really do anything like practice or that would just burn me out.

"Yo you guys alright." I opened my eyes to see them just looking at me like "why aren't you worried"

"He said he'd give us all a chance if we beat him yo know so all we got to do is that." I'm acting really calm right now yeah but I am also kind of excited. I never used Chakra today and I want to know how the jutsu's look and being able to run up walls is sick and pushing creativity to its limits and I mean I do wonder does the shadow from our Jutsu a Chakra nature? Or could you use it like a Chakra Nature? Ooo I had to many thoughts but I did need to take it slow I do need to up my reserves as I mean there alright for a genin so massive amount of Chakra training and other stuff after…will I train after…heh probably.

"I have an idea on what we could do I mean a plan to capture him and prove we're here to stay." I smile at them as they asked me to continue.

Asuma walking back into the training field with it just passing the hour mark Asuma looked at the fighting teenagers almost yelling at each other. 'Oh well.' Asuma approached them as they kept the argument on and he decided to stop them by clapping and getting there attention.

"So have you guys decided who is going to be my apprentice unless you want to be my punching bags I mean I do need some practice today." Asuma smiled sadistically at us.

"It's going to be me" a uncharacteristic Choji yelled in anger as he glared at both me and Ino who glared back twice as hard.

"It's Going to be Me!" Characteristically Ino yelled back at him.

"Huh this is pitif-" I cut him off by throwing a concealed kunai in my right hand as I rushed him as Ino and Choji didn't notice.

I ran at him with chakra increasing my speed at a good rate as well I was surprised and seemed like Asuma was as well. He must be thinking "what is this kid doing he's supposed to be a Nara so trying to get me in his shadow" I smiled as I aim my right fist to hit him in the upper chest as the height difference is actually screwing with me I'm so short. Shuffling through my pouch I grabbed the smoke bomb inside and dropped it as he caught my fist. With quick thinking I use my legs and pump them with more Chakra as i unexpectedly jumped higher bringing his and my arms up as a yell came from Choji. "Partial Expansion Jutsu!" With the smoke covering Asuma view and me jumping on his shoulder and springboarding off his shoulder as I flipped and tucked to avoid the radius of Choji enlarged fist hitting Asuma as he dispelled him. 'Huh'

Landing on the ground the smoke bomb finally came to an end there was no Asuma…'Damn Shadow Clone.' Looking around the battlefield and reaching for a kunai I felt like this was a must as heard some sound coming my way I did the hand signs for the Shadow Imitation jutsu as I connected the kunai shadow to the one I created I threw it past the person there and connected the shadow to them…it was Ino…'Fuck!'

Letting Ino go as to tell she was as surprised to me do that and she threw a kunai at me as it skinned my cheek. 'Cheeky Bastard' my eyes widened as I ran towards 'Ino' as she transformed back into Asuma as he grinned until he heard the words "Mind Transfer Jutsu" Ino tried to be quiet but in her excitement accidentally screamed it as Asuma turned to her he used the Substitution Jutsu as he swapped with a wood pole at the other side of the clearing.

"Dammit!" I hadn't meant to yell it out load but it almost worked actually it did work but I let my guard down at Ino even though she was in the forest for our plan…

45 Minutes Ago…

"I have a plan" it took them not much time for them to let Shikamaru tell them his plan of going as the distraction which definitely was weird especially for Shikamaru but I wanted to subvert expectations and be the first to engage.

"I might not hold a candle to him but I'll find a way where you" I pointed at Choji as he looked at me more intently listening " while deliver a punch that could send him back and give him injury as I could catch him in my shadow." I told them but Ino seemed to think otherwise giving her own opinion.

"Shikamaru that won't work he's a Jonin I don't think it would be that easy to distract him and also even 'if' Choji gets a hit on him your Shadow is to slow to get to Asuma-Sensei in time." She didn't want to bring the spirit of the team down but I could hear it…she just didn't want to take such a risky plan and end up failing. I could tell she wanted to actually make her family look at her proudly and…the whole Sasuke thing was probably a distraction for her to take all that pressure she feels on herself… I couldn't help but but my lip as I look at Ino and plant my hand on her shoulder as she looked at me.

"Hey…Ino I know this plan seems crazy and all and that it might not work but if it doesn't work out…if Asuma still want's an apprentice…I'll back down so you can take it…I know this means a lot to you Ino…i wouldn't want to take that away from you…" I said it head and yea I did mean it in the end and though Choji did send me a shocked look as what I did seem to resonate with him.

"But…but this matters to you just as much as it does to me!" She half yelled as tears threatens to come from the corners of her eyes.

"Neh" she looked at me with widened eyes." A strategist as to be able to be there on the field with his troops so if I do fail…I know it's my own fault and now my team." Ino looked shocked at me but I showed her a smile.

"Can you trust me Ino." She didn't make any noise for a little while as she looked down at her knees under her.

"…why are you so willing if we fail to push me as his apprentice?" It bugged her why was he doing he should be worried about himself.

"That's easy" I paused as I looked at Choji and back to Ino "it's because you're my friend and I care about you…Troublesome Blond" I smiled at my words as her face looks at mine to detect any lies and I just gave her a true smile and her eyes widened again. I wiped the tears that threatened to leak out of her eyes as I threw her a smirk.

"You know pretty girls shouldn't cry you look better smiling ya know." I teased her and she gave me a good reaction as she blushed and refused to look at me as I kept the smile up.

"Shikamaru…is…idiot." She could only keep her eyes on him before getting flustered again. I laughed and so did Choji as Ino started to calm down from being flustered.

"Well back to the plan Ino you and Choji will start to argue for the spot for apprentice when he arrives and that's when I rush him and Choji jumps in." I connected some more pieces. "With the distraction of my initial rush with Choji's attack and my Shadow paralysis jutsu you" j pointed at her "will hide after I start my rush and use you jutsu to swap bodies and go to lord Hokage to make us Team 10 Officially.

Present Time…

Breathing heavily as stared down Asuma as Ino and Choji look more beat up. For the past couple of minutes we've been tossed around I try making opening for Choji or Ino as either one deals some sort of things and Choji would keep him more on his toes but mine or Ino's jutsu would help if they landed. I stopped trying my shadow imitation after the third time trying even after using the Kunai trick from the Hiram arc I still couldn't reach him and he would just sidestep or Substitute himself out of the way the bastard! Running through my Jutsu one more time I suddenly had an idea. I've been just really using only my clans techniques what about the academy and ooo that's a good idea.

Making 4 normal clones as they appear I see Asuma raise his eyebrow. This was blatant as hell and even Ino and Choji looked at me weirdly but I smiled. Letting the clones walk inside of me and keeping the clones from following me a ran at Asuma and that when my clones let there arms go in different directions as he didn't know which one was which.

His eyes widen as one of the Shikamaru's threw a kunai at him and he only sidestepped it to see 2 other Shikamaru doing the exact same thing. 'I've never seen Clones used this way. This Kid?" Looking on shocked at me would be Ino and Choji on how I utilized this jutsu and that when an idea popped into Ino's mind. "Hey Choji!" Ino called to Choji who turned to her and she made the final handsign for the clones summoning 4 of them and having them walk inside of her. Choji saw her lead as he started doing the signs for the Jutsu as 4 Choji walked into Choji.

'They were illusion's so they couldn't be harmed or do harm. They were usually useless in a fight but when you want to confuse an opponent this would work.' I saw a kunai from Ino come to Asuma as he grabbed his own kunai and tried swiping it away only for it to phase through him and 4 of my fist aimed at different parts of his body.

Laying a haymaker on Asuma and seeing his shocked face made me happy I landed an actual punch on a elite level shinobi though Asuma didn't waver and grabbed the fist after I connected swing me into the ground throwing against it my body bouncing of it. 'Oh shit…I'm losing consciousness that hurt…fuck'

Getting woken up by Ino as she looked over me the first thing I saw was her face as she was peacefully sitting there. Getting up to a sit which startled Ino I grabbed my head it hurt a bit but that was probably the impact I had on the ground. Though I did feel cloth already there and Asuma sitting as well with Choji and they were playing Shogi.

"Sensei Shikamaru is awake." With Ino letting out a smile as she turned to me I only raised an eyebrow did we pass or not I mean I don't really know. But what I do know is that you don't want to take a jonin's full power and not like that anyway. I looked at the sun it was beaming more brightly than when we got to actually fighting Asuma so I wasn't passed out the entire day so that's good and I even recovered a bit of my Chakra.

"Ok Shikamaru are you doing alright?" Asuma asked as he hunched over to look more closely.

"Um yea I'm doing better but quick question…did we pass?" It may have been stupid to ask instead of focusing on my health but for gods sakes I got this hurt to be put in team 10 I'm not trying to fail!

"Oh yea I was already planning on keeping you guys after that first plan against where you created that technique with you're kunai and shadow, I've never seen that before" Asuma-Sensei now put a hand on his chin and gave a contemplative look.

"Yea Shikamaru I've never seen that before not even from your dad." I could hear the Ino's voice radiate surprise but then she pouted unexpectedly. "Why didn't you tell me you could do that." She continued to pout as I looked at her a little dust of link came to my cheeks she was cute with the pout she was doing.

Shaking my head to get my bearings I look at them both and the now approaching Choji "well I was kinda just trying things." It was a weak excuse yes but it not true it is my intention to try things out.

"Hey I know I'm injured but I wanted to try something." I got up quickly but stumbled a bit and Choji grabbed and stabilized me by putting his head under my shoulder.

"Here Shikamaru let's head to the hospital for a check up first." Choji said and Asuma-Sensei did just that and took me on his back as he called back to Choji and Ino.

"You guys should get home since we have morning missions tomorrow"I couldn't see his face but I could feel his smile when he said "Team 10" as we all smiled. Asuma-Sensei sent a wave at them before taking off jumping onto a building and me grabbing hold to not fall off.

Jumping on top of building on Asuma-Sensei's back was cool and we went at a fast pace until we or more like Asuma-Sensei was Kurenai with Kiba, Hinata, and Shinso with her. Asuma turned to me and asked. "do you mind" and I quickly nod my head to the side and so well landed next to Kurenai-Sensei.

"Oh my why are you so hurt what happened." I don't know if she was asking me or Asuma-Sensei but I place my bet on me.

"Yea dude you look like you just took a beating and with those bandages." Kiba was quick to say as he looked me once over has he had his hands in his coats pockets.

"Are you okay Shikamaru-Kun" asked the shy hyuga and while I looked at her I flash her a smile and she seemed to get the message.

"How did he get hurt like this Asuma." If I looked in front of me I would have seen a very angry ravenette burning a hole into Asuma-Sensei and Asuma at least had the dignity to look down trying to avoid danger at all cost.

"Wouldn't have been better if they tested there ability's with one Shadow Clone?!" She looked at him glaring some more. But that was the thing that made Asuma-Sensei's calm demeanor change into one of exasperation.

"That's what I did and the team manage to dispel him in like 1 minute less" at that Kurenai-Sensei looked at me and I smiled showing my teeth in the process luckily non were broken in the process of the battle.

"What the heck are shadow clones?" Kiba tilted his head at the adults and Kurenai-Sensei looked at him to respond.

"A Shadow Clone is well a clone that has the ability to use jutsu like a normal person just that it dispels after being hit." Kurenai explained the bare minimal to Kiba who had sparkles in his eyes.

"Sounds cool. Could you teach me Kurenai-Sensei?!" Wow I never really seen Kiba act like this he really only tries to act cool or like a dog person which makes sense as I heard Akamaru bark popping his head out of Kiba's coat/jacket…thing?

"The Shadow Clone Jutsu splits an individual's Chakra so summoning a bunch would cause you to get Chakra exhaustion. That's why it's a forbidden technique only Jonin and above can learn this Jutsu safely." Kurenai lectured Kiba who poured, Hinata who looked amazed and Shino who just nodded. Though Kurenai-Sensei did return her attention to me "How did you get this hurt Shikamaru-Kun." She asked nicely kinda like a mother would.

"Well after being able to land a punch on Asuma-Sensei he reacted like any Ninja would with survival instincts and grabbed my hand…and promptly slammed into the ground rather forcefully making a small crater and knocking me unconscious." I told her the whole story and to say she was pissed at Asuma-Sensei would be an understatement. Shivering Asuma-Sensei tried to take off. Emphasis on Tried.

Getting beat in the middle of the street by Kurenai-Sensei she then after beating on Asuma-Sensei started talking. "It's really impressive though Shikamaru-Kun landing a blow on Asuma's caliber is something most genin could probably do maybe even some Chunin." She praised me and I just sheepishly wave away the compliments.

"I just used everything in my arsenal and with the help of my friends we managed to land a hit on him like a real one." I chuckled a bit and rubbed the back of my head as Asuma-Sensei spoke again getting up from the floor. "Well with the maneuvers the kid was doing I was defenetly ready to counterattack but umm my unsticks did take over so now I'm taking him to the hospital for a check up." With that and Asuma-hopefully not going to die the next time he sees Kurenai-Sensei we all say are goodbye's and jump back onto another building.

It seemed like I needed to stay at the hospital overnight since the blow I took seemed to actually do some damage though they told Sensei I was kept in the dark but I was assured it wasn't deadly as Asuma-Sensei's face was less than caring as he literally just scoffed as he probably thought is emeas something worse…it was like 2pm now and what the hell im supposed to stay here and rest my head uhh. What the hell!
