Chapter Forty-Seven
~Kira's POV~
"You're not pushing yourself 18. You need to be quicker!" Her instructor's voice was soft but stern. Kira tried not to flinch as she sat on her knees, her back in a straight pose. She'd just failed her fifth exam for hand-to-hand combat and she was now paying the price for it. "You need to be smarter! Faster! And overall, better! Do you think we get to where we are by slacking off? By being unfocused? No, we do not." The lecture continued for thirty-eight more minutes with her instructor listing everything Kira did wrong during her training.
She hated being here, but there was no other way out.
This was her life.
To train daily, hour after hour to become the perfect assassin so she could be of use to the Organization. She was already 13, and her brother was far above her station. She was…a failure.
When the lecture was over, Kira stood up without saying a word and went back to training. It was the same thing over and over again. She always training to be the best killer, the best fighter. And yet, every time she ended up back here, on her knees and being berated. She wasn't good enough. Wasn't fast or smart enough.
After the last take down, Kira lay on the mat for a moment. A flicker of her eyes was all the indication that something had changed. She had changed. She wasn't 13 anymore. She was 16! She was the best assassin. As cold and ruthless as Kai and the others in the Organization. She didn't make mistakes. Not anymore. This was just a memory, a memory to remind her? No, that wasn't right. She was stuck in this memory. She couldn't escape. The memory replayed every time Kira tried to run or escape it. She knew this was just a memory, but it replayed so much that she was sure she was cursed to repeat this moment in time.
Kira would do her repetitions pose by pose, line by line, grip by grip… perfectly, but then something would happen, and she would stumble and fall or she'd lose her rhythm and be slammed back into the mat again and again. Then came the thirty-eight minutes on her knees to hear her lecture. She wasn't sure what hell this was, but she couldn't get past it. Well, that wasn't true. Every other body slam, Kira ended up seeing a flash at the corner of her mind, a flash of Kai. His face was stoic but she saw the worry and the darkness in his eyes that indicated he wanted her back… but he was always gone in the next second.
She'd been trying to time it but it never happened consistently. She knew if she managed to catch that glitch, something would change. Or was it just her hope that this would change?
"18! Focus!" Kira snapped back to the memory only for her instructor to kick out and hit Kira in the side. Kira grunted as a familiar pain went through her. Kira looked to the side and… there! Kai's face was peering into the room. Kira didn't spend another second on the ground as she quickly rolled to her feet and headed for the door.
"18! Get back here!" Kira ignored the call and opened the door. Instead of the stone-cold halls of the Russian base, Kira was transported to a rooftop. A horrifyingly familiar rooftop. Kira looked around in a panic but there was nothing here except the usual rooftop building crap. Smoke drifted upwards from vents as the inhabitants below warmed their apartments against the cold winter air. Her gun was in her hands.
Kira knew this memory as well. It was one of the many that haunted her. Only this one, it held special meaning for her because of the turning point. Kira walked to the edge of the building and looked across the open street where a handsome boy was coming out of a building. He was 17, brown hair and green eyes that sparkled in the sun. More precious than any jewel she'd ever seen before. His smile made her heart thump, it was filled with mischief and always came before he talked her into doing something she shouldn't be doing.
The orders came from Nikolai himself. Or at least, that's what she'd been made to believe at the time this memory had been completed. She knew the truth now. It still didn't change what was about to happen.
It was muscle memory for Kira to kneel down against the wooden crate on the roof. Her gun was solid in her arms as she activated her quirk. She aimed, making sure she wouldn't miss, not that she ever could with her quirk. Despite her emotions crying out for this to stop, Kira knew her mission. Cold logic took over as she got the boy in her sights. He paused, as if he heard something from behind him. His head turned and a flash of silver was seen in his hand for a brief moment. He was armed. If she didn't…someone else would. And at least she would be merciful. That's what she thought as she pulled the trigger. Kira watched as her blood bullet shot towards the boy and hit him square in the chest, shoving him backwards.
She kept an eye on his prone body, splayed out on the marble steps of the Embassy building. Alarms went off as guards came out to look at the boy. Confirm the kill. It was drilled into her head. Kira didn't see any movement from the boy, either voluntary or involuntary. Kira nodded once before she grabbed her gun and headed for the back of the building. Her mission was complete. Kira jumped off the roof as her heart turned to nothing more than a memory filled with pain.
The scenery changed and instead of falling into a back alley, Kira landed in a familiar bedroom with silver moonlight spilling into the room. Kira righted herself and turned around. She froze, her eyes wide as she became aware of this memory. Shina was on her knees in front of Kira dressed in a silk nightgown. Her long wavy, dark hair spilled over her face as she shook with sobs. Kira knelt down beside her, putting a hand on her shoulder. When Shina looked at her, her bright golden eyes were dull and broken.
"Please…don't let me go back…I don't want to go back, not to him." Shina started sobbing more as Kira froze. She remembered this moment. It was one she hated herself for. The words spilled forth like they were being wrenched from her.
"You belong to Dimitri. He will have no other. No one else will have you." Shina cried harder and Kira wished desperately that she could take those ugly words back. Nothing was worth hurting her like that. The bedroom doors opened and a sickly-sweet smell invaded the room.
"Shina? How are you doing? Oh… You came out of it huh? Naughty girl." Kira turned her head and saw the vindictive, acidic pink eyes of Angelique. Angelique's heels clicked against the stone floors as she came closer. "Leave us 18." Kira was too numb to refuse this as she got up and nodded at Angelique. Shina grabbed her leg, but Kira jerked away. Kira clenched her eyes and hands as she walked past Angelique. "There, there sis, I'll help you return to your happiness." Kira glanced back and saw Angelique blow pink dust onto Shina who gave a whimper before an unnerving smile spread across her lips.
"Angie? Where's Dimka? Where's my love?" Kira left the room, walking down the halls. It would be three more months before she got up the nerve to talk with Nikolai about what was going on with Shina. It would be another two weeks after that, that Shina and her siblings were finally away from the Russian mafia.
Kira started running. The memories all flashed by like it was a hallway of nightmares. Everything she remembered and even some she didn't know she remembered. They were all tainted by her own hands and those of others. Her life wasn't her own.
"Stop! Please! I don't want to remember these!" Kira yelled out as she kept running. "Please! I don't want to be here anymore! Someone! Help me!"
~Shina's POV~
Sunlight hit her skin and lit up her golden eyes as she looked around the unfamiliar forest she found herself in. The sunlight was a strange thing to experience after she… Shina frowned. Where was she before here? She frowned. She remembered being in the Ugly House and there had been…panic? No, anxiety. Something was wrong and she'd been getting defensive. Everything had changed drastically before she had a chance to do anything and then she was here. Wherever here was. The forest meadow she was in seemed to be on a mountain. Everything around her was bright and full of warmth, birds were flying around, and a wind was blowing through the trees.
As far as she knew, she'd never been here before. Shina started to walk around, noting where she was in the hopes that she would be able to get out of here. At least, that was her intention until she came to another meadow and her eyes widened as she saw a boy engulfed in flames. Instinct kicked in and she was running forward towards the boy to save him. She threw her hand out, slicing the air and causing the flames to respond to her light manipulation as the fire was forced away from the child.
Shina grabbed the boy and picked him up before she jumped free from the blue flames. Shina made sure the flames were extinguished on the boy and the place he'd once stood in before she looked at the boy who stared up at her with wide blue eyes.
"Are you okay?" Shina asked. A mix of emotions overwhelmed her as she looked for any wounds on the child. She saw some parts of his clothing were burned and so was his skin. "Why are you playing with fire? Don't you know it's dangerous?"
"Why'd you do that?" He asked in irritation, glaring up at her. He tried to struggle to freedom but Shina kept a firm hold on him.
"Because you were on fire! I'm not gonna sit back and watch a kid like you burn!" She snapped back at him.
"I'm fine!" He stated, glaring at her with familiar blue eyes. Shina narrowed her eyes at him, ignoring the part of her that was clicking with realizations.
"You are not fine! You're burned up!"
"As if you care Sunfire." She blinked in shock, freezing for a second as the boy's voice started to turn deeper, more masculine instead of the childish voice she first heard.
"Huh?"
"You've never cared how I use my quirk before." She frowned, looking at his features clearly before the realization washed over her. This was the boy she'd seen in Endeavor's home when she and James had broken in a few nights ago. The boys form flickered and suddenly, Dabi was lying in her arms. He glared at her with a dangerous look in his eyes. "Why are you holding me?
"Oh…shit." Shina muttered. The realization of this was enough to cause her mind to stop working for a moment before she latched onto the first thing that came to mind. "You're Endeavors son?" Apparently that was the wrong thing to say as Dabi's eyes turned murderous. Shina didn't think as she suddenly dropped him on the ground and moved back. "Don't kill me! It was a guess!"
"And how did you come to that conclusion?" Dabi asked with an irritated growl as he stood up. Shina looked to the side and mumbled out,
"I…brokeintoEndeavorshouseacouplenightsago." Dabi frowned at her mumble as he hadn't understood it at all.
"What?" She winced at Dabi's tone.
"I broke into Endeavor's house a couple nights ago okay?"
"Why?" Dabi asked, his tone still sounding dangerous but there was a curious note to it now.
"I had my reasons, but I can't go into that with you right now." Dabi came closer to Shina looking like he was going to threaten her with physical violence. She stood her ground as he came closer. Despite her initial movement of releasing him when the realization came, Shina wasn't scared of Dabi. She refused to feel fearful of someone who looked so lost a second ago.
"Tell me." Dabi demanded in a harsh tone.
"No." The scenery around them seemed to start to melt before he could push the issue. The forest melted like it was nothing but paint on a canvas and suddenly turned to a horrifyingly familiar venue, one that Shina prayed she would someday forget. It was an outside wedding on top of a rooftop. Snow fell from the night sky to land on chairs covered in fur while a white covering overshadowed the altar.
"Oh god…" Shina suddenly felt sick.
"Where are we?" Dabi asked as he looked around the area.
"…my wedding." Shina murmured looking around as well. Dread and anger filled her as she wondered what was up with this sudden change. She couldn't teleport, she doubted Dabi could. What was going on here?
"What?" Dabi asked, frowning at her. Shina walked over to the isle, looking down to where the bridal party was supposed to be coming down.
"It's a very long and…honestly messed up story." She sighed. Stomping footsteps had her turning to see a handsome man with brown hair and green eyes dressed in an expensive tuxedo who was walking towards her. It took her until that moment to realize that her normal outfit had changed to a white wedding dress and her hair was pinned up like it was the night this memory initially happened.
"Oh no." Shina muttered. Dimitri got up close and personal with her, keeping that benign smile on his face.
"Sunny… you need to stop breaking out of your conditioning." Dimitri spoke in a velvet voice as he cupped Shina's face. "You know you're happier under the conditioning than out of it. Less confusion and stress for you my pet." She jerked away from him and formed a golden sword of light.
"Back up, now." Shina's tone was hard and full of violence as she glared at Dimitri. He glanced at the sword before giving her an amused expression.
"My love, you've never been able to hurt me. What makes you think you can do it now?"
"This already happened." Shina growled. "I know the outcome of this. Doesn't mean I won't use another way to try and kill you." He tried to reach her again, but she slashed the air with the sword. It didn't connect as he easily grabbed the sword and held it as blood started to leak from his hand. His green eyes glowed with a golden light as four gray, thin tentacles started to come out of his back.
"Sunny, my sunlight. You're being so unreasonable. You can't fight against me. Not when you're so weak." He chuckled. "Come darling, you know we must be married soon. Stop being so feisty my pet." Shina dropped the sword, leaving it in his hands and formed a light gun that she pointed at his face. Anger flashed across his face before he schooled his face into a charming mask. He absorbed the sword into his body before he sighed. "When you are my wife, you will have to stop being so unruly."
"I'll die first." Shina snarled.
"Then I suppose I should increase your training. A good wife needs to be obedient and listen to her husband. What you're doing now is just crazy. You know this isn't anything to get upset about. You're marrying me and joining my family. We've always been good to you."
"Like hell you have." Shina thought about it before amending, "Yes okay, Nikolai, he's been good. But he's old. I know you're sick and twisted mind would sooner kill him than listen to him for much longer." Dimitri sighed and took a step forward. Shina lowered the gun and shot Dimitri's leg making him shout out as he clutched his leg. He gave her a look that promised violence and hatred. She met his eyes with controlled violence in her eyes. "I really do regret not killing you sooner." She tried to pull the trigger again, but the scene changed again with a jolt.
Shina glanced around, seeing the memory of that night fade and change to an alleyway.
"Aw come on! I was about to get some catharsis." She whined, looking towards Dabi who was also here in the alley. Dabi was watching her carefully. "What?" She snapped, dropping the light gun that followed her.
"You were going to kill him." Shina sighed, rolling her eyes as she folded her arms and leaned against the alley wall.
"Yeah. So? You're a murderer too."
"…you said you don't kill." Dabi murmured, eyeing her before he smirked. "Guess even you have your limits. Not so high and mighty anymore."
"I never claimed to be high and mighty Dabi. I'm not a hero. You've been to my childhood home, not exactly anything high or mighty about it." Dabi watched her for another moment before he looked around the alley.
"Hm, looks like we're going to be going down memory lane here." She frowned at him.
"What do you mean?" Dabi indicated down the alley. Shina looked that way. It took her a moment to see at the end of the alley was a younger Dabi with white hair and faded scars on him. He was smaller but he was obviously looking for food in a garbage can. Shina frowned before she looked around the area before asking Dabi,
"47th and Chen?" Dabi gave her an unreadable look before he nodded. "We used to look for food around this area too." She murmured as she looked back at the younger Dabi.
"You lived on the streets?" Dabi asked, confused. Shina nodded.
"Before we managed to steal. Back when we were just kids." Dabi nodded as if he understood. They watched the younger Dabi scrounge for food before he left the area. Shina followed him, wondering where he was going. Dabi didn't say anything as they walked, he knew this memory all too well. His gaze was on Shina, wondering what she would do. When she saw younger Dabi go behind a specific building a faint smile formed on her lips. She followed and saw the younger Dabi slip through a hatch against the abandoned building. "You found our place."
"Your place?" Dabi asked in confusion. As he watched, Shina reached out and flicked the latch on the door and it opened wider without a sound. His eyes widened as she slid into the basement. Shina took a moment to look around the basement's overall structure before she took in the basement's modifications to fit just young Dabi. Adult Dabi followed behind her, still watching her. Shina went over to a specific column and ran her fingers along the carved symbols in the wood. A cat, a sun, a ghost and a devil emoji.
"My siblings and I were on the streets when they were 9 or 10, I was 16. We didn't have any family in Japan since we were American. Didn't know anything. So, we stole food from the trash and lived like raccoons for a while. This was our place, we marked it with our own symbols." Shina said softly. She pulled her fingers away from the wooden column and looked at Dabi. "It was a dry and cool place. Any heat we needed we got from the blankets." She indicated the blankets that young Dabi was curled under. "I didn't know anyone else found this place. I haven't thought of this place in so long." Dabi thought over her words, carefully trying to pick them apart for any lies. He doubted she was lying though; she knew about the markings on the column that he had always wondered about.
"…why were you on the streets?" Dabi asked finally. Shina thought of the reason why, remembering what led to her and her cousins being homeless. The basement changed and shifted into a dimly lit hospital room. The familiar beeping sound of the heart monitor came. Shina was standing at the foot of a hospital bed. The woman in the bed had her full attention as her throat closed from the influx of emotions she felt as she stared with wide eyes.
A younger version of Shina sat in the chair beside her mother's hospital bed, obviously sleeping. Three younger versions of Kana, Yuto and James were sleeping on the couch by the window. The woman in the hospital bed was middle aged and thin. Her black hair was thin, stringy, and oily. Her skin was pale and sallow but still, she was the most beautiful woman Shina had ever seen.
"…I forgot what she looked like." Shina whispered in a strangled voice. She swallowed hard as her breathing sped up and she looked away before suddenly leaving the room. Her eyes pricked with tears that she refused to allow to fall. It took several deep breaths to find any calm. A cold feeling washed through her as she came to a stop by a wide window that was next to the hospital room. The view showed Tokyo city at night. Dabi came to a stop beside her. Shina clenched her jaw as she looked down. "That's my mother." Shina spoke softly.
"She's dead?" Dabi guessed. She nodded. "You don't have any other family besides your grandmother and your cousins. No one helped you?"
"I'm sure a social worker may have been assigned to help but, I didn't give them a chance to step in." Shina muttered.
"Why not? I'm sure they could've prevented you and your cousins from ending up on the streets." She glanced at Dabi before she looked back at the room her mother was in. A man in a dark suit and a wheelchair was coming by. The man was being wheeled by the doctor who attended her mother. Dabi turned and he frowned as he recognized the Doctor.
"Because of them." Shina murmured before they both went silent.
"As you can see, the mother is in a poor state." The doctor stated softly to the man in the wheelchair.
"Why hasn't she died yet?" The man asked, his voice, Shina knew she recognized All For One's voice and now, she remembered where she'd heard him before.
"Her will is strong." The doctor stated. "But I'm sure one more 'treatment' will suffice. The children will be open to be taken at that time."
"Good. I'll be back for them tomorrow." AFO stated. The doctor rolled him away. "It will be nice for Shigaraki to have competition." The memory ended and changed to a bright hospital room. A younger Dabi was lying on a bed and he looked like he was just waking up. Shina looked at Dabi.
"Where are we?"
"You'll see." Dabi stated. Shina frowned and watched the events of Young Dabi waking up. He met the Doctor and was told he wouldn't be able to return home. This caused Dabi to freak out about his family before he then lit up in blue flames that burned down the facility and everyone inside.
Shina wasn't sure how she was even supposed to react. She felt an overwhelming amount of sadness fill her as she watched everything. One that she knew Dabi wouldn't respond well to.
"I see." Shina murmured as she looked at Dabi. She calculated her words carefully before she finally spoke. "…You shouldn't have had to experience that. No one does." His face was neutral as he watched her. He nodded once.
"It's done." Shina tilted her head at him before their surroundings changed again but this time… it was to a public street and there were people all around. Shina frowned looking around. "Where are we now?"
"This isn't yours? It's not mine." Shina stated as she looked around. "I've never been here before." They continued to look around the street before Shina caught sight of a small child with light blue hair walking towards them. The boy's eyes were wide and looked terrifying as a woman who stopped to talk with the boy ran away afterwards. Shina walked over and knelt to the boy. "Are you okay?" The boy whimpered as he looked at Shina and looked behind her to see Dabi hovering in the background.
"Please, I need help." He spoke in a small voice.
"What's your name hun?" Shina asked softly, frowning in concern.
"Tenko Shimura." Shina nodded before she reached out her hands to comfort him. The boy flinched backwards. "No! I'll hurt you." Shina stopped.
"How?" The boy whimpered again and held his hands behind him.
"I-I… my quirk…I can't control it." Shina nodded and looked him in the eyes.
"Tenko? It'll be okay. I promise. Just…I need you to tell me what happened okay?"
"…I…my family is dead."
~Kana's POV~
Kana had been trying not to pace her bedroom waiting for any updates on her siblings but it was hard. She'd already been bouncing her leg for some time before she stopped and tried to spend some time with her classmates. The elevator doors opened and Kana saw a few of her classmates lounging around. Kana went to the kitchen and grabbed some snacks and started making some tea to help calm her down. She wasn't very influenced by medication to help but she did know that certain teas helped.
Her hands wobbled and she ended up getting tea all over the counter.
"Oi! Quit being so clumsy." Bakugou's voice came, startling Kana so badly she spilled the tea even more. "That was graceful."
"Can you just…be quiet for two minutes?" Kana grumbled as she glared at him. Bakugou looked at her before he spoke,
"Oh yeah? Why should I?"
"Because your voice is grating on my nerves." Kana snapped as she looked at her tea and sighed. 'This is so not worth this.' She thought as she started to clean up her mess.
"Oh yeah well your clumsy ass is getting on my nerves." Bakugou growled. Kana felt her anger spark.
"Then why don't you leave? You don't have to be here in my space."
"Maybe I don't want to leave. Maybe you should leave dumbass."
"Fine, I will!" Kana snapped as she threw down the towel she'd been using to clean up and walked away from the kitchen, intending to go back to her bedroom.
"Smooth dude." Kirishima's voice came from behind her.
"Shut up." Bakugou grumbled. Kana called the elevator and waited before she just ended up taking the stairs to her room.
"Hey!" Kana ignored Bakugou's voice when he called out to her after she'd gotten halfway down the hall to her bedroom. She didn't stop to even consider being polite. She was stressed out already and she didn't want or need to deal with Bakugou's entire personality. "I said hey!"
"Hay is for horses!" Kana snapped as she opened her door and slammed it behind her. It wasn't nice but it did make her feel better before she remembered what was going on with Kira and the others at the Ugly House. Kana ran her hands over her face and let out a muffled shriek before she got a hold of herself and shut down. It wasn't healthy, but it was better than causing unnecessary violence to everyone.
Bakugou pounded on her door.
"Open up idiot!"
"Go away!" Kana snapped as she pulled out her phone to check for any updates from Kai. He was still with Jean Con and Claude on their way back to the Ugly House. It was going to take them at least another hour before they managed to get into the city. "Coulda helped them, but no. They want to take the hard and long path." Kana grumbled to herself. She really needed to calm down.
"Open the door Kana." Bakugou pounded the door harder.
"I said, go away!" Kana yelled.
"I'm not going away that easily!" Bakugou shouted as he kept pounding on the door.
"And I'm not going to bend to your demands either!" Kana couldn't sit down and just ended up pacing her room again. Bakugou wasn't helping her here.
"Just…" Bakugou growled but he did stop pounding on the door. Probably good, she doubted the door would have been able to handle such rough treatment. "I need to talk to you."
"Then talk!"
"Face to face idiot." Bakugou growled out. Kana glared at the door but she couldn't bear to make herself open it. "I can feel you trying to burn me alive."
"No I'm not." Kana snapped.
"Look I don't know what's going on with you but can you just open the door?"
"That depends, are you still going to be an ass?" Kana didn't swear a lot, if ever, but dealing with her own stress and Bakugou on top of it, that was pushing her breaking point.
"Maybe." Kana rolled her eyes. Against her better judgement she opened the door and glared at Bakugou.
"What?" The dark look she gave Bakugou would have sent her brothers running in fear. Shina would have hesitated before ultimately deciding to mess with her. But Bakugou took one look and smirked.
"Looking kinda fierce portal head. Did I annoy you that much?" Kana didn't answer, she just slammed the door in Bakugou's face. Or she would have if he hadn't been quick and slipped his foot into the door. His socked foot. "Hey!" Kana opened the door to see Bakugou hissing in pain and holding his foot. "Why'd you do that?"
"Well you shouldn't have put your foot there!" Kana yelled. Bakugou just glared at her.
"You're a pain in my ass portal head."
"Good for you." Kana growled. "Now what do you want that was so important enough for you to put your foot there?" Bakugou stopped messing with his foot as he stood straight, his signature scowl on his face.
"Come on idiot. I wanna show you something." Bakugou turned and started to walk, or limp, away. Kana blinked.
"I'm sorry what?"
"I said come on!" Bakugou called back to her. He glanced back, red eyes still annoyed. "Hurry up." Kana hesitated before her own curiosity got the better of her and she closed her room door and jogged after Bakugou. She slowed when she caught up to him and folded her arms.
"I'm still mad at you."
"That's fine dumbass. Now just keep following me." Kana rolled her eyes but kept quiet and followed Bakugou to the roof of their dorms. Once they were there, Kana looked all around, seeing no one up there and the door to the roof wide open. There was an area where it looked like wooden crates were piled up but Kana didn't spare a second glance.
"Why are we here?" Kana asked.
"Figured you needed somewhere to destress." Bakugou stated as he led Kana behind the wooden crates to show a small area that looked like it was fashioned into a hideaway area. Kana noted the pillows on the floor as well as the dark blue scarf that acted as a roof covering. There were two cups of tea with steam rising from it sitting on a smaller crate in front of the pillows. There was even a small bowl of ice cream and two spoons. Kana frowned looking at Bakugou.
"Uh, why is there ice cream?" Bakugou looked like he was just done and he sighed, rubbing his head.
"To tell the truth, I didn't set this up. Dunce face, Shitty hair and Tape face put this together. They just wanted me to get you up here." Kana looked around the small area.
"They aren't here though."
"Yeah I know." Bakugou's voice was annoyed as he looked at her. Kana frowned in confusion before it clicked.
"Wait, is this their idea of a date?" An embarrassed look covered her face before she hid it behind her hand. Bakugou sighed.
"I don't know why they keep doing this." Kana opened her mouth before she closed it again. She honestly had no words. This was…something.
"Um, well, I guess thanks to them but…I wasn't expecting something like this. I'm not in the mood for this." Bakugou nodded before he went and sat down on the pillow.
"Yeah I figured. I wanted to leave you alone but…those idiots said you would appreciate something like this." Bakugou grumbled. Kana saw a small pink tinge to his cheeks as he looked away and guilt ate at her. Kana sighed and sat down beside him.
"I'm not feeling up for it. But I did want some tea to help me calm down."
"Why?" Kana hesitated. There was only so much she wanted to tell him, so much she could.
"My sister is in some drama and I don't know how to help her." Bakugou snorted.
"Why you so concerned with her drama?"
"Because she's my sister. She's my best friend." Kana stated simply. "Kira's the only one I can relate to and…same thing for her but for me." Bakugou frowned.
"Still doesn't explain why her drama is your concern." Kana took a sip of her tea, unsure how to even explain this.
"Because she's someone I care about and love. We're family. Family helps each other even when we feel like strangling each other."
"Never seen you help James." Kana rolled her eyes.
"That furry can help himself and drown." Bakugou frowned at her. "Figuratively speaking, besides he deserves it with all the stuff he's done to me."
"And what has he done?" Bakugou asked. Kana really should have been careful with her words as this was a question that looked easy, but, it wasn't. How did one even say that James had tried to sell her twice before and even started a turtle rebellion because she liked turtles more than cats? This was a level of insanity she doubted anyone in her class had ever faced. Actually, it was probably something that most people in the world never had to undergo and so they wouldn't understand.
"A lot of things." Kana finally settled on before she changed the subject. "It's just… Kira is my bestie, my bosom sister- if you don't get that reference I will be disappointed, but I would understand. She's been through a lot of things before we adopted her and right now… right now I'm afraid she won't be able to…come back from this issue." The was a good, if last minute, cover up. And vague enough that it should work.
"Again, what could be so bad that it's having you want to get involved? It's her concern, not yours. She's the one who has to make it through whatever she's going through. You should be looking out for yourself." Kana frowned at Bakugou's words.
"I can't! What if she needs help? I'm not going to let her go through this alone." Bakugou seemed to assess her. His frown deepened before he sighed.
"Alright fine. I don't see the appeal but, whatever." Kana was glad he just let this go. She cast her eyes around before she saw the ice cream.
"What kind of ice cream did they get?"
"Hell if I know. I didn't plan this." Kana nodded as she put down her tea and picked up the ice cream. She looked at the ice cream before she sniffed it and then took a hesitant bit of the ice cream. "Oh, it's…vanilla? I think." She frowned as she tasted the flavor. It did taste like vanilla but there was something else. Trust ice cream to be able to make her forget what she was just doing or talking about.
"Give me some." Bakugou tried to grab his spoon but he fumbled and the spoon fell to the floor. Kana burst out laughing.
"Wha! Good catch." Bakugou glared at her which just made her laugh more.
"Gimme your spoon."
"No! It's my spoon." Kana protested. Bakugou started to growl. "Okay, okay, okay! Compromise, I hold my spoon and give you some."
"You're gonna feed my ice cream?" Bakugou deadpanned. "No chance in hell shortie."
"Do you want ice cream or no? Cause I can have this all to myself if you want?" Kana stuck her tongue out at him and smugly took another scoop of the ice cream. Bakugou glared at her harder before he sat up and folded his arms.
"You're a pain in my ass."
"You said." Kana snickered, unable to help it. She held out the spoon to Bakugou.
"Going once, going twice-"
"Alright fine!" Bakugou leaned forward, still glaring at her as he spoke.
"If I ever get a chance to embarrass you like this I'm taking it."
"Yeah, yeah." Kana held out the spoon but her arm was unsteady because she was trying not to laugh. Bakugou growled at her. "Okay, I'm trying to give it to you!"
"Hold you damn arm still!"
"There!" Kana stilled her arm as much as possible. "Ya happy?" Bakugou nearly chomped the spoon, glaring but that shifted to a smirk as he pulled away, the spoon clean.
"Yes." He spoke with his mouth full of ice cream. Kana waited a beat before she saw Bakugou twitch and she snickered.
"Brain freeze?" Bakugou glared harder.
"No." He grit out. Kana stuck out her tongue at him.
"Liar." She held up another spoon full of the ice cream, this time bigger. "Want more?"
"No." Bakugou shook his head, trying to lean away.
"That's what I thought." Kana cackled as she licked the ice cream.
"Why don't you-" Whatever Bakugou was about to say was cut off by a loud ringtone as Kana's phone rang. Kana and Bakugou both jumped at the sound. Kana put the bowl of ice cream down and checked her phone before she answered it.
"Hello?" Kana answered quickly.
'Hey, we need you and Yuto to assist.' Kai spoke, not bothering with any pleasantries.
"Oh okay. Now?"
'Yes now. We need you to meet us at the main gate.'
"Okay, what about the furry?"
'We don't need the furry. Just you and Yuto.' Kai spoke firmly. Kana nodded.
"Okay. I understand." Kana stated before she hung up and looked at Bakugou. "I'm sorry but I have to go. Aizawa needs me for something."
"For what?" Bakugou asked, suspicious. Kana shrugged as she stood up.
"I don't know. He didn't say." She glanced at Bakugou and gave him a weak smile. "Uh, thanks for this. Or well, tell Denki, Kiri and Sero I said thanks. It certainly did relax me."
"Yeah." Bakugou murmured. Kana nodded quickly before she moved to the door and exited for downstairs to get Yuto. Bakugou didn't move, still staring after Kana before a loud thud was heard from behind the wooden crates. Bakugou narrowed his eyes before he got up. "Alright you three better get out here now." There was no movement. "Do you want me to come in after you?" Bakugou threatened.
"No!" Denki popped his head out from behind the wooden crate. Kirishima and Sero followed looking sheepish.
"Explain." Bakugou growled.
"Well we just finished your lovely date when you two came up and we couldn't run back down without you guys seeing so we just hid." The three explained quickly, anything to avoid getting hit by Bakugou.
"It sounded like it went better dude." Kirishima grinned.
"Yeah you guys got to have some ice cream." Denki smiled. Sero was frowning at the floor. Bakugou noted it but he didn't say anything.
"Yeah, I guess so."
"Why did Aizawa want Kana though?" Kirishima asked, curious.
"I don't know, you heard what I did." Bakugou grumbled.
"We should just leave that be." Sero stated quickly. "It's not our business." Bakugou narrowed his eyes at Sero who looked away.
"True dude." Denki smiled.
"So, when is the next date Bakugou?" Bakugou growled at Denki making him yelp and run for the safety of the stairwell. The three boys quickly ran after Denki.
GM NASAI: SO...Unintended hiatus. In my defense...I moved away from Cockroach City and into a lovely new place and I really was wiped out after all that moving. And then life happened, meaning new life was birthed- not from me, my only boyfriends are the ones in anime and manga. And of course the struggles of life and spoilers happened and... I was distraught for a while and needing time to grieve. Needless to say, I am...somewhat back. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the chapter!
