"I do not miss that laboratory…" I mumbled to myself before letting out a dry chuckle. 'Though, I do wish I could go back to our younger years. Days when we knew nothing of what awaited us outside that door. If it wasn't for Mother Miranda…' My teeth ground against each other thinking of all that transpired to lead us here, to the both of us no longer on speaking terms. Seated in my chair, from the corner of my eyes, I glanced back at the picture of Karl and myself and I felt my irritation crumble. 'I miss you…'
"My Lady. We have a guest." Ianto made himself known, interrupting my midday reading beside the fireplace, as I looked past the top of the frames of my reading glasses to see Ianto walk further into the living room. His body was as stiff as a wooden plank, and from behind him, I saw the devil herself. The very woman I was just thinking about.
"Mother Miranda." I greeted as I gracefully placed the book I was reading on top of the side table, getting to my feet and walking over to welcome the woman who hid behind her typical golden beaked mask. "I feel incredibly honored that you would take time out of your busy schedule to grace us with your presence." I feigned my enthusiasm, putting on my best smile in hopes to hide my disdain as I motioned around the room. "If you had called ahead of time I would've prepared some refreshments and tidied up a bit more for your arrival."
"I will not be staying long." Mother Miranda held up her hand to stop me from making a fuss over such an insignificant thing. Her attention seemed elsewhere as I watched as Mother Miranda went over to the very picture that I had been previously staring at. "It's astounding how much time has passed, I barely recognized the children in this picture."
"A lot of time has, indeed, passed Mother." I agreed as the tip of Mother Miranda's mask turned in my direction to indicate that her attention was now on me.
"This must have been after you and Heisenberg met your siblings." Mother Miranda said and I simply shrugged my shoulders and tried my best to bite the tip of my tongue to prevent me from blurting out what I was thinking. The woman couldn't even be bothered to remember that she was the one that took this photo. "Where did you find this?"
"I'm not quite sure myself." I went over to stand beside the woman. "I found it in one of my many books, I assumed I placed it there and forgot all about it." I had to lie, but lying seemed to come easy for me nowadays. "Might I ask what is the reason for your visit, Mother?"
"A couple of days from now, the ceremony will be held and I request that you be there by my side, Sinclair." Mother Miranda had gotten straight to the point for her unexpected visit as I saw the inkling of a smile under her mask. "You will witness the glorious moment when I finally have my darling Eva returned to me…and you will get to meet your one and only sibling."
"If you wish it, then it shall be done." I faked obedience. "I shall be there to bear witness to the moment I get to meet your precious child."
"To meet your younger sibling. She is your precious sister, Sinclair." Mother Miranda corrected before drifting closer to me, the metal claws on her fingers grazing the side of my face before her hand nestled against my cheek in a gentle caress. "When my Eva has returned, you remember what that means, don't you my child?"
"My siblings would have successfully returned to the Megamycete." I replied as Mother Miranda nodded her head in satisfaction.
"The child's father…Ethan Winters was it?" Mother Miranda thought before continuing. "The man has already disposed of your sisters. It's only a matter of time before he makes his way to Moreau and Heisenberg. And then-" Mother Miranda continued to list, to preach to me things that I already know, but I was more hung up on the words she just spoke to me.
'Disposed of my sisters…that means that Donna is dead as well…' I thought sadly, my heart dropping as I thought of the silent and recluse woman who treated me as if I was one of her many porcelain dolls. Both Donna and Alcina were my family for so long and they were gone in a blink of an eye, and this didn't even phase Mother Miranda for she continued to talk as if it was no big deal!
"Sinclair, are you listening?" Mother Miranda's voice boomed throughout my house causing me to jerk back at the sudden volume.
"Of course Mother, as you say…things are going according to plan." I responded, knowing full well that even if I wasn't listening, being around this woman for so long I knew where her mind would go when she would think about such matters. In the corner of my eyes, I looked past Mother Miranda and froze. I saw a glimpse of Ethan taking a step into my house which caused me to slightly panic when I noticed that Mother Miranda was also about to leave after hearing my positive response.
"Mother Miranda, might I ask you something?" I spoke up, preventing the woman from leaving and turning back to me to give me her full attention once more. For a split second my eyes had turned to where I had seen Ethan finding that he was no longer there, and I couldn't help but think to myself: 'Had…had I imagined it?'
"Of course my child." Mother Miranda nodded. "But do make it quick, I still have much to prepare before the ceremony can take place."
"Why me? What makes me so special to be able to stand apart from my siblings that you decided not to have me killed off as well? Wouldn't it be beneficial if I were to return to the Megamycete as well for Eva to return?" I asked. It was a question that has plagued me since the moment she started to separate me from the only people I knew to be my family…as she had introduced since the beginning. "Because I don't see it, the others…they're powerful. Their gifts are incredible! Mother Miranda, I just don't understand-"
"Sinclair." Mother Miranda came over to me and placed a hand on my shoulder, giving it a light squeeze and through her mask, I saw her typical blank expression staring back at me that always accompanied her forced smile. "I've told you my child that you are so incredibly special to me. Your siblings, though successful in their own way…are far from what you have accomplished. They are still flawed, unfit, but you are the closest I've come to achieving perfection from my work. Your high affinity for the cadou inside your body is astounding. You are the result of a decade worth of my research…and it was thanks to you that I knew I was so very close to getting my Eva back."
'You've said this before, Mother, yet there seems to be something else you're not willing to tell me.' I thought as I forced my smile. 'But for now, I just needed to keep your attention on me for a while.' I thought to myself as I briefly looked past the woman who has caused me nothing but pain, who continues to cause me nothing but pain, to see the Duke's hand peeking out from the room he usually occupied when dealing with my villagers. His fingers did a slight wiggle as if attempting to catch my attention, before giving me a thumbs up. I let out a relieved sigh, Ethan was safe and well hidden. 'I must thank the Duke once Mother Miranda leaves.'
"Does that explanation satisfy your curiosity, Sinclair?" Mother Miranda asked and I simply nodded my head. "Then be a good child, and walk me out."
"Of course Mother Miranda." I obliged as the both of us walked side by side out of my house.
Just as the two of us walked past, I took a chance and looked into Duke's Emporium and saw, huddled just behind the Duke's large seated form, was Ethan. Crouched low to the ground, eyes squeezed tightly shut as he bit his bottom lip and I noticed that his body slightly shook as we passed by. 'Do not fear Ethan, Mother Miranda will soon be gone.'
Mother Miranda and I walked together in silence, passing through the empty village and over the bridge till the both of us made it to the only entrance leading into my greenhouse. Ianto, as always, was waiting at the entrance like my loyal guardian…my ever-faithful sentry.
"Lady Sinclair. Mother Miranda." Ianto respectfully greeted us with a bow. "I trust your talk was enlightening."
"Quite." Mother Miranda answered plain and to the point before turning to look at me from over her shoulder. "I never got to congratulate you, Sinclair. You've taken great care of dear Ianto for so long, your many tests yielded progress as well. Yet another splendid example of why you are possibly my greatest succession."
"You flatter me Mother Miranda, but it is thanks to you for delivering Lady Sinclair to our little village, we were truly unworthy of such a savior." Ianto recited words so sweet as if he was reading off a script. "I am lucky to have been bestowed with such a precious gift where many have failed to earn. My master is truly a remarkable woman." Ianto smiled politely to Mother Miranda. "Are you leaving so soon?"
"Yes, I only came here to inform Sinclair of a meeting she is required to attend." Mother Miranda said. "I shall be off now, you do not have to take me any further Sinclair. I shall see you two days from now."
"Of course Mother Miranda." I bowed my head just as Ianto did, the both of us waiting as Mother Miranda disappeared in a burst of feathers.
I closed my eyes, listening carefully to make sure that Mother Miranda had truly left, and when I failed to sense her presence Ianto and I turned to leave back for our home. "Are the villagers safe?"
"Of course Lady Sinclair." Ianto nodded his head. "The moment I smelled that woman I ushered the villagers to the hidden bunker. They are waiting for me to retrieve and notify them that they are safe."
"What would I do without you Ianto." I giggled as together we headed back to our little village.
"You would be just fine without me, My Lady." Ianto immediately responded without a moment's hesitation. "Though I do apologize about not realizing that Ethan Winters had entered into our territory."
"He's a hard one to detect." I reached over and reassured Ianto that he did nothing wrong. "The Duke reacted faster than we ever could before Mother Miranda could catch him."
Ianto nodded his head, though a bit hesitant, and at some point, while I continued forward to my quaint little house in the middle of my territory Ianto had gone to retrieve the other villagers.
"I am so sorry Selena." When I had returned to my home, Ethan was already waiting on the front steps, and when he had seen me approach he began to apologize profusely. "I hadn't expected Mother Miranda-"
"Neither did I, Ethan." I waved off his worry before motioning for him to follow me inside, a little bit elated that he had called me by my first name. Such familiarity I could only assume was his way of showing his ease in my presence compared to the first time we met. "Are you here to rest your weary body?"
"Actually, yeah. I just gave some weapons and ingredients for the Duke to prepare so I have time to kill. Figured I'd take this time to rest since I still have two more Lords to get through to retrieve the rest of my daughter." Ethan looked a bit embarrassed as he scratched the back of his head with his injured hand.
"As I've said, you're always welcome to take shelter here. Take as much time as you need." I assured. "You have such a long road ahead of you, but I hope you reach the end of it in one piece."
"What happened to all the villagers?" Ethan suddenly asked as I heard him following me throughout the house. "When I entered it seemed…"
"Like a ghost town?" I finished, pivoting on my heels to turn back to Ethan who took a quick step back to avoid bumping into me. "It's the protocol I'm afraid, and it has become a habit. In the past, when Mother Miranda would come for a visit the villagers are ushered to a secret spot to avoid being selected as one of Mother Miranda's experiments. My own little…'laboratory' so to speak. A hidden bunker disguised to fool the monsters. And if by chance she did see some villagers, then I would assure her that they were mine to toy with, it was just a matter of time before I would be finished with them."
"Smoke and mirrors?" Ethan asked as I nodded my head, turning back around to continue walking. "How would they know that Mother Miranda is coming?"
"There are things in my forest that serve as my eyes and ears. They help me keep my villagers safe. There's only so much I alone can keep an eye on, it helps to have some assistance." I turned to send a wink over my shoulder in Ethan's direction. "Once these villagers are in my care they trust me to keep them safe, it's my duty to protect them. In return for their safety, they cultivate the land with me, though I much prefer them to just live as they normally would without worrying about placating me. It's a mutualistic relationship that I don't intend to break." I smiled fondly at the thought of the company that has considered my humble greenhouse their home. "Anyway, Ethan, where did you just come from if I may ask?"
I heard Ethan hum, he sounded like he was carefully contemplating his next words before he decided to speak up. "I had a bit of a hallucinogenic walk through the forest leading up to the Beneviento house by the waterfall."
My body faltered at the mention of the secluded house by the waterfall before continuing toward the kitchen. "I have heard that the yellow flowers planted in Beneviento's garden induce hallucinations to those unfortunate enough to stumble across her region. Quite a fascinating thing, those flowers, and normally a lot of her 'visitors' never return from her secluded home." Once I reached the kitchen I moved over to the sink and began to wash the dishes that were stacked neatly on top of each other. "Since you've returned, I'm assuming that you've taken care of Lady Beneviento just as you had with Lady Dimitrescu."
"Yeah," Ethan whispered. "but something strange was left behind after I…took care of Beneviento. I think she wanted me to give something to you."
"Oh? Lady Beneviento just…gave it to you?" I wiped my hands dry on the towel that was hanging through the cabinet handle below the sink before turning to Ethan who held out a small black covered book. I reached out and inspected the book curiously, having not recognized the book from my many visits to Donna's house. "Have you seen what was inside here?"
"Beneviento nor her doll never relayed to me in words that she wanted me to give it to you. But Angie, the little doll Beneviento used, had this hanging around her neck." Ethan then bought out a golden key. "The design on the key matched this chest that I recognized through the crack of a door just a bit to the left of the foyer. I went to check to see if there was anything useful in there that I could use or sell. That's when I found that book with a piece of paper lying on top with your name written on it." Ethan bit the bottom of his lip. "I didn't look, I promise. It was addressed to you from Beneviento, it wouldn't have been appropriate for me to invade your privacy to satiate my own curiosity."
I held the book gingerly in my hand before carefully flipping the book open to the first couple of pages. The pages were old, brittle, and frail…yellow-brown from aging, and I had to be careful whenever I turned over to the next page.
I couldn't help but smile at the pictures and small doodles that littered each page, not a single space was empty aside from the little small notes Donna had taken or a date at the top corner of the page. This was very precious, and I'm glad Ethan hadn't looked first. "Thank you, Ethan."
"Judging by your expression, I can tell how incredibly close you were to Lady Beneviento." Ethan pointed out as I heard him shuffling around the room, hearing the wooden chair from the table in the kitchen being pulled out as the man let out a long sigh. "I'm…I'm sorry, but I have to do this. For my daughter."
"Not just Lady Beneviento…" I mumbled under my breath. "And I understand Ethan. A father's love is forever, and from my understanding…a parent would do anything for their child. At least, that's what a lot of books and movies have shown me." I went over to the small table, sitting opposite of Ethan, and smiled. "So feel free to rest, be at ease, stay here or walk around the village, the choice is yours on what you do with your free time. Though I'd appreciate it if you stop by to say goodbye when you're ready to venture out again. Common courtesy and all."
"I'll stay here. Thank you." Ethan said as I simply nodded my head and began to shuffle through the black book once more, holding it up so that only I could see the contents inside the book. But my concentration faltered when I began to notice in my peripheral vision that Ethan's eyes would curiously stare in my direction without being too obvious, and when I attempted to catch him his gaze would turn back toward the window…his attempt at hiding that he had been staring.
This went on for a few minutes before I let out a sigh.
"Ethan," I sighed, closing my book shut and placing it closed between us, giving the man across from me my full attention. "if there's something you wish to ask me, you're free to do so."
"But I don't-" Ethan began to deny, but I simply smiled at the father before interrupting him.
"Mister Winters," I tapped a finger on the cover of the book I was looking at, leaning forward to prop my elbow on the table and resting my chin on the back of my hand. "I can sense your curiosity, so while you rest we may as well spend this time…getting to know each other."
"I don't know how comfortable I am telling you more about me." Ethan blurted out causing me to burst out laughing, unable to contain how much I was enjoying conversing with the man. It was quite silly how one moment he can seem at ease, while another he can be quite defensive even in the face of danger.
"Ethan, I already know all I need to know about you. From what Mother Miranda has told me as well as what little you have told me I've been able to surmise your situation." I shook my head. "But I sense your curiosity of me, you were staring at me while I was looking at the contents of my book, so feel free to ask to get to know me. I promise I won't harm you if I don't like the questions."
Ethan looked hesitant before opening his mouth to speak.
"When you said that a parent would do anything for their child…you then said that that's what books and movies have shown you…" Ethan, mumbling at first, but after gaining enough courage his voice rose when he realized that I, indeed, wasn't going to hurt him but was waiting patiently for him to continue. "Were your parents not like that?"
"I didn't have parents growing up." I answered honestly, not at all bothered admitting to it now than I had been all those years ago.
"No parents." Ethan mumbled. "Then, did you not see the parents in the village?"
"I didn't grow up in the village either." I responded. "I've spent the free time that was graciously granted to me to ponder and contemplate before concluding that I didn't grow up in this part of the world either."
"How did you come to such a conclusion that you didn't grow up in this region?" Ethan was genuinely curious and I could only smile.
"It's only an assumption, I don't have facts to back up my conclusion. You see, my memories from before I was ten are gone." I responded, causing Ethan to tilt his head to the side in confusion. "I'm sure it's safe to assume, after seeing it first hand, that what happened to me is exactly what happened to your Rose."
"What do you mean by that?" Ethan asked.
"What I mean is that this isn't the first time Mother Miranda has kidnapped people. Before Rose, there were countless people she'd taken from the village, from the frail elderly to the ankle-high babies. I've seen many come and go of all ages." I pointed to myself. "I'm sure I was kidnapped from my family all those years ago, or it's highly possible my family was kidnapped first and I was the last to be taken. I cannot say for sure."
"Have you ever thought about going to find them? Or even finding out if they are still alive?" Ethan asked curiously.
"Maybe when I was younger. I dreamed about leaving and finding my parents to see where I came from…to find out who I was." I shrugged my shoulders. "But the fear of Mother Miranda prevented me from leaving, that woman has her icy grip wrapped around your heart. The guilt of being given a 'gift' and a new life makes you feel like you're indebted to her, that fear forced us to serve her…undying devotion to repay for something we didn't ask for." I glared down at the book. "That woman thrives on her followers that worship the ground she walks upon." I leaned back into my chair, looking off to the side as I ground my teeth together. "In reality, she never truly cared about us…only what we could do for her."
"…and where does your allegiance lie?" Ethan's eyes, I could feel, were boring straight at me, judging me. Wondering if he should let his guard down around me. "You seem incredibly close to Mother Miranda, yet you say her name as if it leaves a foul taste in our mouth, and speak of her with such hostility."
"The interaction between us you can call it the closeness of a mother to a child, to me it's simply an illusion I created." I smiled proudly. "If Mother Miranda sees my loyalty as unbending and unquestionable then I can go about my business without her prying eyes constantly watching my every move." I stated. "Just so you know, in hopes to calm your doubt and gain your trust, my allegiance doesn't lie with Mother Miranda."
"What do you gain from helping me?" Ethan asked and I simply turned my head to stare back at the man who I saw relax back into his chair.
"I gain nothing from helping you. You came to me asking for help and it's natural for me to accept without expecting anything in return. I take people's problems and I help them if it wasn't apparent by this little bubble village I created." I pointed out as I motioned to our surroundings. "The same goes for your questions, I'm allowing you to ask them without expecting you to answer any of mine. It's just the type of person I am."
"Yeah, I'm starting to slowly see that…" Ethan muttered to himself.
"Ethan, all I ever needed from you is to know that you are no threat. To myself and the villagers, I look after. And if you had a problem, all you had to do was tell me and I would try my best to help you whether it be something as simple as allowing you into my home or giving you advice. I will never force you to tell me what you're planning to do and only listen to what you allow me to know." I stated. "If you did not agree to such terms and conditions then I wouldn't have allowed you to use my home as you please. I would've shown you why I am considered a silent lord to the people in this village."
That…that sentence had the opposite effect I was hoping for.
Instead, it looked like Ethan had tensed up once more instead of relaxing in my presence. He reminded me of a skittish animal, and from my own experience dealing with skittish animals, I've dealt with all of them in the same way: with a little patience and a smile.
'Would a smile only creep poor papa out?' I thought when I looked at Ethan who was nervously nursing his wounded hand. "What was that saying again? Enemy of my enemy…is my friend, right?" I smiled at Ethan, hoping that it was a genuine smile. "I'm not your enemy, I hope I've shown you that much at least, shown that you can trust me at least a little…you can consider me a friend. Just like the Duke is."
"I wouldn't say I'd consider the Duke a friend." I heard Ethan mumble under his breath and I couldn't help the giggle that had escaped through my lips.
"I'm sure he would be hurt to hear that." And just like that, the atmosphere in my kitchen had cleared. The air felt cleaner, it was easier to breathe, and I saw Ethan forget about his wounded hand as well as his problems momentarily as he joined in my laughter.
Though the moment was brief because just as I reached out to flip through the beginning pages of the book Donna had entrusted to me once more I noticed Ethan begin to fidget. As calculating as I could, every so often, so quick that Ethan wouldn't have noticed, I would take a chance to glance his way. Several times I had caught the man sneaking a glance in my direction, but not completely at me this time…but at the book in front of me.
'Curiosity killed the cat as the saying goes.' I shook my head and with a chuckle, closed the book and startled the poor man. "Would you like to see what's inside Lady Beneviento's book, Ethan?" I asked, though I already knew the answer. I carefully slid the book across from me toward Ethan before leaning back in my chair spot. "Go ahead."
I watched Ethan's hands inch toward the book before recoiling, glancing back at me to see if it was truly alright to touch the book that was meant for my eyes only, and when all I did was send an encouraging smile his way, Ethan had reached out and opened the book to the first page. I watched Ethan's expression go from surprise to intrigued at the contents of the book as he ruffled through the pages, to shock and realization as he turned to look at me with genuine concern. "Selena…these drawings are of you and-"
"My siblings are monsters, I know that…and you know that." I smiled sadly at the picture he stopped on, a picture that Donna had drawn I suppose from her memories as well as an insertion of herself. It was as if a third person was looking in on the exact moment, but it was a single moment frozen on paper. It made it seem like we were…normal for once. "But as evil as they were, and are…they are still the only family I knew. We were dysfunctional, and a bit crazy…but it was the closest I could get to a real family."
Inside the book were memories, moments frozen in time, things that Donna had remembered from our extensive years of being alive. Tea Time with the girls, Donna dressing me up in clothes that she had created just for me. We were smiling and laughing, though you wouldn't tell with the veil that was over Donna's face. Some of these weren't necessarily moments that Donna had experienced, but from the stories I had told her about…told Angie about. The precious times I spent with Alcina and Moreau was captured perfectly by Donna in this little book. There were even some of me and Karl as children, teenagers, times I enjoyed in the factory, but Ethan seemed to overlook that as he continued looking through the pages of the book. But I think what caught Ethan's eyes were the dates that Donna had put in the top right corner of each page.
"I'm sure you've seen it already, noticed it when you're in Sister Alcina's castle." I longingly stared at the picture that Donna drew, of our first introduction to our siblings. "The parasite in our body has prolonged our life span. To you Ethan I may appear closer to your age, but I assure you that I am much…much older than you. And I do mean it when I say that I care about my family very much." Ethan was about to open his mouth but I held my hand up to stop him. "I have something to confess, there is something I gain from helping you, but it is already something that is part of your tasks to getting your daughter back…it's not out of your way I assure you."
This caught Ethan's attention as I held eye contact with the man across me to show how serious I was being by confessing such a thing.
"Mother Miranda's sole intention is to bring back her true daughter. She confided in me her plan, thinking I'm something special…in her eyes at least. She has plans with the lives of my siblings and your daughter." I paused. "Mother Miranda needs to be stopped and you will be the one to do it, my siblings need to be dealt with as well but I hope you can at least make their deaths quick for they will not concede defeat so easily. As you have seen, they will fight you to please our Mother." I placed my hand on the pages of the book. "I don't care what happens to Mother Miranda, but I do care about my siblings…monsters and all. I'm angry that they're so blinded by that woman…blinded that they don't realize she's just throwing them away. I just want them to be at peace. Once that happens…I think I can be at peace as well." I requested. "This is all I ask in return for using my home as your resting place. Can you do that for me, Ethan?"
"I-I will do my best to make sure that the remaining Lord's deaths are quick. It is something I have to do to get my daughter back after all. To end this." Ethan stated with conviction as he slid the book back over to me. "I'm…I'm sorry that I have to do this when all you've been is helpful."
"Don't be sorry Ethan, it is something I have come to terms with." I said as I graciously took back possibly what I'd considered my second most treasured possession. My hand traced circles on the cover before letting out a sorrowful sigh. "I will help you any way I can, but I cannot physically help you in killing my siblings."
"I understand." Ethan nodded his head, his shoulders lifting as he took a deep breath to calm himself down. "I will do what I can."
"Thank you, now rest. You now have my brothers to take care of." I said as I watched Ethan nod his head before closing his eyes. I waited for Ethan to fall asleep, his head slowly dozing off, and when I knew he was completely dead to the world I quietly got to my feet.
"Ianto." I whispered under my breath when I heard Ethan's breathing even out, trusting and knowing that whenever I called out, Ianto would always hear me.
"You called for me, Lady Sinclair?" Not even a second later, as expected, Ianto appeared in the doorway of my kitchen.
"Be a dear, take Mister Winters to one of our guest rooms." I walked over and looked down at the sleeping man. "And be careful, we wouldn't want to wake him. He's had a long day."
"I understand My Lady." Ianto said with a smile.
'I'm sorry for everything. For keeping my own personal gain from you helping me, to placing such a heavy burden on your shoulders, Ethan…' I thought as I reached out to the sleeping man, my hand hovering just over his head as I closed my eyes. 'In return…I will try my best to help you just as you are helping me.'
Selena is kind, she's too sweet, but she also has a secretive side (two different faces, but which is real? *wink wink* or both could be who she is haha) which I hope I'm portraying so that in the end it's a big reveal as well as what she is truly capable of that she's hidden from Mother Miranda for so very long.
If you are enjoying my story and looking forward to more chapters then leave a nice little review, favorite, and follow to let me know =D though it's not mandatory, it's greatly appreciated. Thank you everyone for reading! Lots of love and big hugs! See you in the next chapter =)
