Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Sailor Stars: Chaos Theory
Act 37: Preparing for Battle
By: Sora Kazeno
Rei bit her lip as she waited for the girls outside of the school gate. Her mind replayed the conversation she had with Mamoru last night. She hadn't heard from him since then. She hoped he was alright. She didn't want to talk to Usagi about what happened. Rei subconsciously tapped her foot. She knew Usagi didn't want to tell Mamoru everything since it would only hurt him. But Rei couldn't sit around and watch Mamoru hang on to false hope. It would only make things more difficult for him. Rei was fairly certain Usagi would not change her mind again. The sound of Usagi's voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
"I don't want to go…" Usagi whined loudly. Usagi walked next to Seiya. Ami, Minako, and Makoto followed closely behind.
"Go where?" Seiya asked in confusion. "Did I miss something?"
"They want me to train…" Usagi pouted. "The palace was restored…and we haven't used the new training grounds."
"Don't try to wiggle out of it, Usagi-chan!" Minako interrupted. "You promised once school started we would train."
Usagi gave Minako a dirty look. She vaguely remembered agreeing to train with the other girls. She hoped that they had forgotten, but she wasn't so lucky.
Seiya thought back to the training session on Kinmoku that had helped Usagi with hand to hand combat. "That might be a good idea."
"Hey!" Usagi shouted. "Who side are you on?"
"The side that keeps you safe," Seiya said. He patted Usagi lightly on the head.
Usagi scrunched her lips together about to retort, but she already knew it was futile. There was no way she was getting out of this.
"We just want you to be safe. I agree with the others." Seiya's tone turned serious. He reflected on how Sailor Cosmos' tone changed during the battle with Haumea yesterday. It was something he would have to talk to her about later in private. "It will only be a matter of time before the Black Moon returns."
Usagi frowned, but she understood his concern. "Yeah…sooner or later we would have to face them in the final battle." A part of her wanted it to be over. She turned to Seiya, "I'll call you later."
The senshi had a great idea, but they were unsure how to execute it. "I can't think of the last time we all trained together or even trained here." Sailor Venus said as she looked at the other senshi.
"Where do we start?" Sailor Mars asked. How could they help Usagi train when Sailor Cosmos was much stronger than the Inner Senshi's combined efforts?
An idea occurred to Sailor Mercury. "Usagi-chan, what kind of training did you complete with Sailor Galaxia?"
"Oh umm… I had to learn how to stop attacks, counter attack, and try to use multiple attacks at the same time," Sailor Cosmos explained. "I wasn't able to do a lot since the atmosphere didn't agree with me."
"Usagi-chan…" Sailor Mercury said, as she walked closer to Sailor Cosmos. "The other day… Haumea shouted that the gas should have killed you. What happened?"
"She thought she could stop me by using the gas again. It didn't affect me this time. I guess I've developed an immunity to it," Sailor Cosmos said as she recalled yesterday's events. Her eyes widened happily, "I wonder if it means I can return to Kinmoku without any issues?"
The Inner Senshi exchanged nervous glances with each other. "But if you're wrong, Usagi-chan… it could be very dangerous."
"But according to lore we heard from Princess Kakyuu… it would make sense since Sailor Cosmos was originally from Kinmoku. You alluded as much yesterday," Sailor Jupiter said. She watched the Princess carefully for any reaction.
"I did?" Sailor Cosmos appeared confused by her remarks. Her lips parted slightly when she thought about her battle. "I kind of remember…that seems odd."
"Why don't we review what you learned on Kinmoku by starting off with stopping our attacks?" Sailor Mars wanted to redirect everyone's attention back to the training. The others nodded their heads in agreement. Once everyone was ready, Sailor Mars attacked first. "Burning Mandala!" She wanted to start with a simple attack and then increase the difficulty.
Sailor Cosmos barely batted an eye creating a barrier. "You're going to have to try harder, Sailor Mars. I was able to stop Sailor Galaxia and six Starlights." Sailor Cosmos quickly placed her left hand over her lips after she spoke. She wasn't sure what came over. She felt embarrassed by her outburst. "I don't understand…as Sailor Cosmo I feel more confident when using my powers… it was never like this when I was Sailor Moon."
"Perhaps it's a good thing," Sailor Venus said with a wink. "Confidence is important against any adversary." She turned to face Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter, "We should all try to attack at once. Start with simpler attacks and then increase the difficulty. After all we are still learning about Sailor Cosmos' new powers." Her plan was simple.
The senshi spent the next twenty minutes trying to knock Sailor Cosmos' staff away from her. They were unsuccessful in their efforts. Everyone agreed to work on the last skill Sailor Cosmos tried to master on Kinmoku. The Inner Senshi planned their strategy. They would act as moving targets while Sailor Cosmos tried to hit them with a low level energy attack.
Sailor Jupiter easily avoided all of Sailor Cosmos' attacks. Sailor Venus and Sailor Mercury had a few close calls, but were uninjured. Sailor Mars misjudged one of the attacks and rolled her ankle trying to avoid it.
"I'm fine." Sailor Mars stubbornly proclaimed. She tried to act as if her ankle didn't bother her, but she winced when she placed any pressure on it.
"Let me see it," Sailor Cosmos instructed. She kneeled down next to Sailor Mars. With her left land she lightly touched Sailor Mars' ankle and healed it.
Sailor Mars gasped when she felt the warm light enter her body. She flexed her ankle realizing the pain was gone. "Wow. This feels great."
"We should probably call it a day…" Sailor Venus said. She stared at one of the outer walls that now contained a large crack. "I guess we got a little carried away."
"It's easily fixed," Sailor Cosmos said while she raised her staff above her head. Without saying a word, she raised her staff and it emitted a light. When the light dimmed, the wall had been repaired and showed no evidence of damage.
"How are you feeling, Usagi-chan?" Sailor Mercury asked.
Sailor Cosmos yawned, "Tired. Every time I use my powers to heal someone or restore something it drains me of energy."
"That could be considered a weakness that Eris would try to use against us." Sailor Venus rationalized. "But we should rest for today and continue again in a few days. We'll have to come up with another plan to help you train," Sailor Venus directed her last comment at Sailor Cosmos.
Taiki sighed as he turned off his computer. The Three Lights attempted to write song lyrics for their upcoming album, but had made little progress. They needed to have some songs ready by the end of the year. "I can't focus on this anymore," Taiki finally admitted out loud. "I keep thinking about Shiori and what the others told us about Kinmoku before they left."
"You're not the only one struggling with this," Yaten added. "It is hard to remain here while we know Kinmoku and our Princess may be in danger." Yaten anxiously rubbed his hands together. "We're stuck here, while we should actually be over there helping them."
Seiya knew sooner or later this would come up. Taiki and Yaten struggled with the idea of remaining on Earth and not returning to Kinmoku. "If Princess Kakyuu wanted us to return to Kinmoku I know she would have summoned us. But she still believes it is best for us to remain here and help the Earth."
"It just doesn't feel right. What are we doing here? There isn't much we can do to help the Earth," Yaten argued back. "We would be better off leaving the Earth. Only a few people actually want us here."
Taiki gave a counter argument to Yaten's statements. "Would Princess Kakyuu be upset if we left Earth against her wishes to return to Kinmoku?"
Seiya gave Taiki an appreciative glance. "Princess Kakyuu made it clear when she left, this is our last mission for Kinmoku…to stay here and help the other senshi against the Black Moon."
Yaten sighed since he knew he was outnumbered. "I just want to help our home world… I never said we wouldn't come back to Earth."
"You want to remain on Earth?" Taiki asked in surprised. Yaten was typically the most outspoken regarding residing on Earth.
"It's not all bad…" Yaten responded casually. He tried to conceal his true feeling about remaining on this planet. He couldn't explain why, but he wanted to spend more time with Minako, even though she frustrated him on numerous occasions.
"I guess you're starting to realize the people on this planet aren't so bad." Seiya teased him.
"It's not … like that…" Yaten pouted. He would never admit the truth to them.
Haruka stretched her arms over her head after completing numerous leg stretches. She went out for a run this morning. She was still upset over the information she received last night from Usagi. What she hated the most about her current predicament was the idea that there was nothing she could do to change the outcome. The worse thing she could do would be to alienate herself from Usagi any further.
What she really wanted to do was out of her reach. The racing season ended and the vehicles entered the maintenance period. They would be out of service for the rest of the year. She was glad she had completed laps yesterday morning. Now she had to be patient for the beginning of the next season. Her alternative outlet was to run as fast and as long as she could.
Haruka glance up at her apartment building wondering what she would do for the rest of the day. She passed by the pool area and found Michiru with Hotaru completing their morning swim.
"Are you going to join us?" Hotaru asked Haruka. She asked every morning, but was never successful.
"Maybe next time," Haruka responded with a smile. She headed to the elevator. The doors closed and she sighed again. All she could think about was Sailor Cosmos, the crest moon marks, and the nearing of Usagi transforming into Neo-Queen Serenity. She felt extremely irritated that Michiru, Hotaru, and she had yet to receive the marks of the Royal Court. Yet the three Starlights and all of the Moon Senshi had received their marks. How could the three Starlights be considered members of the Royal Court, while the Outer Senshi had protected the Silver Millennium and countless times demonstrated their alliance to the Moon kingdom? Not receiving the mark was equivalent to failing to protect the Princess.
Haruka was about to open the apartment door with her keys, but she hesitated at the sound of voices coming from inside her home. Setsuna should be the only one there. She practiced caution and placed her ear against the door to listen. She recognized Setsuna's voice right away. But she was speaking in a language she did not understand. She listened intently for any words she recognized. Another female voice spoke in the same language. She knew she heard the second voice before, but she could not associate a face to the voice. Her jaw dropped when she heard Setsuna say the name Yui.
Haruka wasn't sure why Sailor Charon would secretly be visiting Setsuna and speaking in a foreign language. Their voices became louder. They were having an argument, but she could not understand the nature of their disagreement. Setsuna said something in a firm tone to Yui. The voices became quieter. Haruka waited another minute, but she didn't hear anything else.
She opened the apartment door hoping to find out what was going on.
Setsuna was the only one in the room. She appeared nervous at the sight of Haruka. "Ah, you're back from your run."
Haruka immediately picked up on Setsuna's tone. Setsuna was startled by Haruka's sudden appearance. Setsuna tried to downplay her surprise, but Haruka didn't buy it. It was clear the older women didn't want anyone to know about Yui's visit. Haruka eyed Setsuna suspiciously, but did not say anything. "I'm going to go shower…" Haruka said. She left the room without another word.
Setsuna watched Haruka's retreating form. She was fairly certain Haruka overheard her conversation with Yui. She was thankful they spoke in the ancient language of Plutian. She was not ready to share her plan with the other senshi yet. Yui knew the folklore of Pluto and what was possible. Yui came here to inquire why she continued to sit back and do nothing. Setsuna was in the process of developing a plan that would take time and research. Two things she did not have at the moment. She needed to find a way to complete some of her research before she made Yui aware of her plan. Setsuna didn't want to give Yui a false sense of hope, if the research proved the legend was nothing more than just that. Until then it was better to keep Yui in the dark, despite the anger she directed at Setsuna.
Setsuna walked over to the kitchen and began to fill a kettle with water for tea. She needed time to reflect on her next step.
Usagi yawned as she walked to school the morning after the training session. She couldn't believe how exhausted she felt after such short training. The past few days had also been an emotional rollercoaster. She needed extra rest to help her recover from everything.
Each time she used her new abilities she felt like she was gaining more control over her new found powers. She was lost in thought as she neared the school entrance. She heard her name spoken among some of the other girls in her grade walking ahead of her.
"I still don't understand why Seiya-sama chose Tsukino-san. He could have his choice of any girl in Japan…but he chose her?"
"She acts like a baby!"
"What is so special about Tsukino-san?"
Usagi frowned at their remarks. She knew some of it was true. Sometimes she still acted childish. She never really thought about how lucky she was to have Seiya enter her life. Though she wished some of the circumstances would have been different, such as his home planet not being destroyed. But if it hadn't been he would have never had a reason to come to Earth.
"Usagi-chan!" Makoto called out to Usagi when she saw her approach the gate. Minako stood next to the tall brunette.
The group of schoolmates in front of Usagi turned around in horror, unaware the person they were badmouthing was behind them. The group of girls quickly dashed off.
"Usagi-chan…you look tired," Minako commented on the other girl's appearance. Usagi also appeared kinda down. "What's wrong?"
"I'm fine," Usagi answered quickly. "I'm just tired from yesterday."
"Oh," Minako said. She flashed a smile, "I'm sure it will get easier over time. We just need to train more often and after a couple more sessions it won't be so bad." She tried to offer encouragement.
Usagi pouted at the thought of completing additional training sessions. Her face brightened when she saw Seiya arrive to school with the other Starlights. "I'll see you guys in class." Usagi excused herself to talk to Seiya.
Eris smiled as he laid down the last crystal shard. He had already combined the other five shards from Nemesis with the Black Crystal. The sphere was nearly complete. "I never realized how delicate the process was to restore this Black Crystal to its true potential." He had to be careful with the final piece making sure it was inserted in its correct place, so the crystal could be restored without any flaws.
Makemake continued to train the Master. As the boy absorbed more of the dark energy, he began to age rapidly. When he was first found two years ago, he was six years old. Now, he was 15 years old. Once the Master was given the Black Crystal his age could continue to increase as his power matured.
Eris wickedly smiled as the thought of the Master's power being amplified, there was no doubt in his mind that he would be unstoppable. Even the great Sailor Cosmos would be no match for the Master. Eris couldn't wait to see Sailor Cosmos down on her knees and begging at the Master's feet for her life.
Eris closed his eyes to refocus himself. He couldn't afford to skip ahead and miss a step in completing the object that would ensure their success.
Haumea continued to place more crystals in the city. There were only a few areas left before they would be done. Timing was crucial. Haumea is amazed at their luck. Sedena had placed most of the crystals while Haumea remained in the shadows. Sedena could move undetected since the senshi never met her. Sedena played this to her advantage several times, avoiding some of the senshi.
Haumea was agitated by her incapacity to stop Sailor Cosmos. She was unsure if she would be able to defeat the Moon Princess. She had barely escaped with her life the last time. If she hadn't hid behind the minions she would had perished. She didn't understand how the gas could become ineffective so quickly against someone of lunar descent. She wouldn't admit it to the others, but she was scared. Her thoughts wandered, causing her to lose focus. She no longer paid attention to where she stood. She was in plain sight.
Usagi, Minako, and Makoto were laughing how they all almost fell asleep during a history lesson. Ami had stayed behind for an after school activity.
Minako turned her head to her right and became alert at the sight of Haumea. She gasped. "Haumea…" she whispered just loud enough for the other two girls to hear. Makoto and Usagi turned their attention in the direction of where Minako was looking. They did not utter a word as the three of them disappeared into an alleyway to transform.
Sedena placed the last crystal for the area. She sighed happily and walked over to Haumea.
Haumea was relieved another section had been completed. Now they could return back to their base and prepare the final batch of crystal shards to place within the rest of the city. They were about to leave when a voice stopped them.
"Hold it right there!" Sailor Venus exclaimed to Haumea.
Haumea cringed at the sound of her voice. She looked in the direction of the voice and found Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Cosmos standing beside Sailor Venus.
Sedena took a few steps forward, drawing the attention of the other senshi. Her eyes immediately went to Sailor Cosmos. She smirked, "You look shorter than you did inside the crystal."
Sailor Cosmos' eyes widen at Sedena's comment. Was she there on Nemesis? "Who are you?"
"Ah that's right…we never properly met. I spent all that time making sure you remained in the crystal while we were on Nemesis. I am Sedena. But my name is not the important thing… you're time on Earth is limited. That should be your main concern." She enjoyed seeing the uneasiness on their faces. "All of our preparation is nearly complete and it is too late for you and for the people of this planet," Sedena smirked. She directed her next comment to Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus, "You messed up when you did not stop Eris on Nemesis."
Sailor Jupiter clenched her fist in anger when she recalled her inability to stop Eris from obtaining any of the crystal fragment.
Sailor Venus' eyes were downcast with regret. She had two opportunities to stop Eris and was unsuccessful both times.
Haumea watched Sedena in awe. This was Sedena's first interaction with the senshi and she already knew how to put them on edge.
Sedena smiled and looked at Sailor Cosmos. "Not even the Guardian can stop what is about to happen." She taunted her. If her adversaries were angry they would not think clearly which will lead to mistakes.
Sailor Cosmos couldn't listen to Sedena anymore. She took a few steps forward, now standing in front of the other senshi. "I will protect the Earth from any danger." She narrowed her eyes in determination. Her staff dimly lit.
Haumea noticed Sailor Cosmos' stance. She was certain Sailor Cosmos would attack any second and she did not have a plan in mind on how to stop Sailor Cosmos. "Our work here is done," she spoke softly to Sedena, hoping it would cue the higher ranking member.
Sedena cast Haumea a disgusted look due to how easily Haumea was willing to turn tail and run from a fight. Stubbornly, Sedena tells Haumea, "This is your chance for payback, what are you waiting for? She is the one that defeated Deucalion and Quarora."
Rage flashed across Haumea's face at the mention of her lost beloved, Quarora. She had to do something to avenge him. She hadn't forgotten it was Sailor Cosmos' fault he was no longer in this world.
Sedena grew impatience and wanted to test the senshi's abilities on her own. She was as strong, if not stronger than Ixion. It was time the senshi learned this fact; with a mere flick of her wrist, the battle begun.
"Brilliant Barricade," Sailor Cosmos summed her abilities to block the attack with minimal effort.
Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter prepared their own attacks. "Venus Rolling Heart Vibration!"
"Jupiter Coconut Cyclone!"
Sedena created a mid-size ball of black energy. Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter's attacks were absorbed by the black energy.
"No way…" Sailor Venus said in disbelief.
Sailor Jupiter mirrored her tone, "She just absorbed the attacks…" She didn't know how she could stop someone with that kind of ability. This made her more dangerous.
"Now it's my turn!" Sedena launched the attack back at Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter. They didn't stand a chance. They were knocked backward onto the ground. "It's your turn Haumea, it is just the two of you now."
Haumea took a few steps forward, unsure of how she would be able to defeat Sailor Cosmos. The senshi was too powerful for her. She hesitated.
Sedena rolled her eyes at Haumea's lack of confidence in herself. She gathered energy in her hands and launched the attack at Sailor Cosmos.
Sailor Cosmos saw the large mass of energy flying at her and quickly created another barricade to protect herself.
"Is that all you can do?" Sedena taunted. "I thought the Guardian could do more than create barriers."
Sedena's constant badgering began to infuriate Sailor Cosmos. It was time for her to attack. "Cosmos Twilight Flash!"
Sedena smiled wickedly, she baited the Guardian just enough. She had gotten the reaction that she was hoping from Sailor Cosmos. She collected Sailor Cosmos' attack just like she did with Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus. The energy was nearly overwhelming, but somehow she managed. She downplayed the struggle she had. "Hmm… if that is all you have, you aren't strong enough to save this world."
"No…" Sailor Cosmos said. She refused to believe she would not be able to save this planet. She had to come up with something quickly to stop Sedena. She reflected back on her training. If she spilt the same attack in half against Sedena and Haumea it should surprise them. She was now thankful for the training she received. But she knew this was a skill she still struggled with. She hoped that she could control the energy and with a little luck cause the two of them to retreat. She closed her eyes for a moment to regain her focus. She had to visualize where she wanted the energy from her attack to travel. She decided to use the same attack and try to throw off Sedena and Haumea. "Cosmos…" She gathered energy with her staff and had to wait until the last second to split it in half. "Twilight Flash!"
The energy hit Sedena and Haumea simultaneously. Sedena was prepared for an attack and absorbed the energy.
Haumea was not as fortunate. She was caught off guard and collapsed after the attack. She slowly sat up, clutching her stomach. She glared at Sedena while she spoke, "You did this on purpose."
Sedena grinned. "I had to see how powerful the Guardian was and her capabilities. If you were a better warrior and could channel your rage, this wouldn't have happened to you."
Sailor Cosmos' watched from a distance, horrified. How could someone be so cold to her teammates? Is this what she was up against with the Black Moon?
Haumea could feel her life slipping away as she closed her eyes a final time. She sighed. She would finally be with Quarora again.
Sedena shrugged her shoulders. "Oh well. She wouldn't have made it past the final battle anyway." Her tone was cold and uncaring. "We will meet again." Sedena disappeared.
Sailor Cosmos rushed over to Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus.
"What happened?" Sailor Jupiter asked rubbing her head. She remembered being attacked by Sedena, but didn't know what happened to Sedena and Haumea.
"Haumea has been defeated…Sedena made sure of it," Sailor Cosmos whispered. "She wanted to see Haumea gone…to understand the extent of my powers."
"That's horrible…" Sailor Venus replied in confusion. "The Black Moon is becoming more ruthless."
Usagi collapsed on her bed as soon as she returned home. Her thoughts returned to Haumea's defeat. Is that how she had attacked when she was controlled by Chaos? So uncaring… so…devoid of life? She yawned and decided she wanted to take a nap. She began to dose off until she heard a knock at her door.
"Usagi! Telephone!"
"Uuuugh…" Usagi grumbled as she began to walk over to her door. Usagi opened the door and was surprised when her mother handed her the cordless phone. "Hello…" Usagi said, half-awake into the phone.
"I guess you really do sleep all the time."
Usagi's eyes widened at Seiya's banter. "A senshi should always rest after battle." Usagi said in a tired voice.
"Battle?" Seiya became concerned. "Odango, what happened?"
"Minako-chan, Mako-chan, and I were attacked by Haumea and Sedena. Haumea was defeated, but Sedena… doesn't care about anyone else. She used Haumea to test my powers. The way she spoke, it sounded like she had been back on Nemesis, when I had been captured."
"I'm sorry I wasn't there…" He responded glumly. He had forgotten how much work it was to be an idol, high school student, and senshi all at the same time. He needed to find a better way to balance everything. "I want to spend more time with you…"
"I know you're busy," Usagi cut him off. "It's just… I feel like I've barely seen you outside of school this week."
"How about if I walk you to school tomorrow and we can spend some time together after school?"
Usagi's mood brightened. "Sounds good."
She didn't understand why her mother made such a big deal about today. They had visitors at the Silver Millennium all the time. She had met dignitaries from all of the planets within the solar system, but Earth. This was Princess Serenity first time meeting anyone from the Blue planet.
Princess Serenity looked over at Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Jupiter. The four of them stood attentive. Princess Serenity did not look forward to the day when she would be Queen. She enjoyed her time in the gardens and knew the responsibility that awaited her.
In a flash of golden light, three figures appeared before them. A tall, slender, man with midnight black hair in navy robes stood next to a woman with dark brown hair in an emerald dress. They both wore crowns on their head. Next to them, stood a man in partial armor and a cape.
"I am sorry, our daughter fell ill and could not travel with us today," said the King of Earth. "I would have liked for all of us to meet on this momentous occasion, but I guess faith did not allow it."
"Serenity," Queen Serenity said as she turned to her daughter. "Perhaps you can take Prince Endymion to the gardens and show him around, while I speak to the King and Queen."
Princess Serenity forced herself to smile brightly. She turned toward Prince Endymion and her heart leaped. She had never met anyone so handsome. From what she was told, he was two years older than her. "Su…sure…" She struggled to find the appropriate words.
Queen Serenity dismissed the four Inner Senshi to resume their training.
Princess Serenity slowly walked through the gardens with the Prince of Earth. She didn't know what to say to him.
"I'm sorry you're stuck keeping an eye on me…" Prince Endymion said, trying to remove some of the awkwardness in the air.
"It's not a problem… it's just I've never met anyone from Earth before. I guess…it's just kind of strange. Ever since I could remember, I've always wondered who lived on the blue planet in the sky." Princess Serenity smiled and pointed to the Earth.
Prince Endymion followed her arm and gasped at the sight of his home planet from this perspective. "Wow… it does look amazing." He agreed with her.
"What is it like there?" Serenity asked. "I haven't been able to leave the Royal Palace."
"You've never left these grounds?"
Princess Serenity shook her head.
"Well, it's very green with large oceans." Prince Endymion began to describe his home while they strolled through the gardens. They stopped on a stone bench to talk for a while. They exchanged information about their respective homes.
Princess Serenity sat there in awe after listening to the stories of his home. "I would love to be able to visit some time." She smiled brightly.
Prince Endymion readjusted how he sat and in the process his hand brushed up next to Princess Serenity. "Sorry…" He said with a blush as he moved his arm to the side. When he first woke up that morning, he had dreaded coming to the Moon to try to improve diplomatic relations. He assumed it would be the same as the ones he attended on Earth. He never dared dream he would meet someone like Serenity.
Princess Serenity blushed slightly. She already knew she would miss him when he returned home. She was in disbelief at this realization. How was that possible when she just met him this morning? Her heart pounded in her chest. She didn't understand what was happening. "Let me show you my favorite place…"
Princess Serenity rose to her feet and in her anxious state, stepped on part of her dress hem causing her to trip. Prince Endymion quickly stood up and caught her.
She tried to calm her breathing but she couldn't describe how she felt being in his arms.
"Are you okay?" He asked her, leaning over slightly.
Princess Serenity slowly raised her head to look at him. She gasped slightly when their eyes met. She couldn't help but be pulled into them. Everything else seemed to be nonexistent but that moment. She didn't understand what was happening, but she didn't want to break apart from him.
Prince Endymion was also confused by the moment. Something felt right about her being in his arms. Before he realized what he was doing, he leaned over and kissed her on the lips.
Tears streamed down Usagi's face as she woke up in the middle of the night. Why was she still having dreams of the Silver Millennium? What did all of these dreams mean? She threw the covers off of her as she sat up. She rubbed her eyes to wipe away the remaining tears. Did she make the right choice with Seiya? Was her subconscious telling her she should have chosen Mamoru? She began to mentally argue with herself that she could not make her decisions based on the past.
Once her tears stopped, she stood up and walked over to her balcony door. She opened the door and enjoyed the cool night air. She looked up at the Moon, but it was difficult to see it hidden behind the clouds. A few scattered stars were visible in the night sky. At first she thought she saw a shooting star, but it was an airplane. Her eyes widen when she realized it reminded her of the new song Seiya had begun to work on.
She hung her head in dismay as she placed her hands on the rail of the balcony. She remained in this posture for several moments. A few drops of water landed on her hands. She quickly opened her eyes and bought her fingers to her eyes to once again wipe away the tears. But none were present. Where did the water come from? A few drops of water fell into her hair. She looked up at the sky above and a few drops hit her face. Rain. She turned around to walk back inside and was caught in a downpour. She rushed back inside and closed the door.
Part of her hair and night shirt were soaked. She quickly found another shirt to wear and searched for a towel to dry her hair. She found the towel she used earlier in the night after her bath, but it was still damp. She groaned and plopped down on the floor between her table and dresser. She misjudged the amount of space and she had banged her knee on the edge of the table.
She immediately wanted to shout, but it was the middle of the night. She bit her lip and rubbed her knee. She immediately jerked her hand away from the bump. It was going to leave a bruise for tomorrow. She knew at this moment that she would be up for a little while.
"There has to be something I can listen to on the radio." Usagi turned around and carefully stood up to turn on the radio. She lowered the volume so not disturb the other members of her household. Music would help her relax.
"You've built a love but that love falls apart
Your little piece of heaven turns too dark
Listen to your heart when he's calling for you
Listen to your heart there's nothing else you can do
I don't know where you're going and I don't know why
But listen to your heart before you tell him goodbye"
Usagi's hand frozen over the volume button. She wanted to change the station channel but she found herself unable.
"Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile
The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yeah
They're swept away and nothing is what it seems
The feeling of belonging in your dreams
Listen to your heart when he's calling for you
Listen to your heart there's nothing else you can do
I don't know where you're going and I don't know why
But listen to your heart before you tell him goodbye"
Usagi quickly shut off the radio. Dejected, she sat back down on the floor and placed her arms on the table. She rested her head on her hands with her eyes closed. She thought she was finally moving past this. Would it always be like this?
Usagi remembered a minor detail from her dream. Endymion was only two years older than her. Why is Mamoru six years older than her in this life time? It came across very odd. If they were closer in age… would that have made a difference in her decision?
She didn't understand why she continued to have dreams of Endymion when she had chosen Seiya the other day. She sighed when she thought about the lyrics to the song she had just heard on the radio. She did listen to her heart, she argued with herself.
Panic suddenly set in when she second guessed her decision. Did she choose the wrong person? No, she told herself. She couldn't continue to torture herself this way. She glanced at her alarm clock and noticed it was 4:15am. She needed to try to go back to sleep for the few hours she had left before she had to get up in the morning for school.
Usagi slowly walked down the staircase the following morning. She lost her footing and nearly tumbled down the staircase. She caught herself by grabbing the banister to her left.
"Odango!" Seiya exclaimed coming up part of the staircase to check on her.
"..Seiya?" She asked confused. Then she remembered their conversation on the telephone. "I forgot you were meeting me here today…" She responded sheepishly.
Seiya looked at Usagi in alarm. She was exhausted and seemed somewhat disorientated. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"I'll be fine," Usagi tried to reassure him. "I just wish I could be in two places at once, so I could go back to sleep", she said while fighting off another yawn. After her dream last night, she hadn't been able to go back to sleep.
Seiya didn't understand why she was so exhausted. He wasn't about to ask a lot of questions in front of Usagi's family. He planned on asking when they were alone on their way to school. He continued with small talk until it was time to leave.
Usagi was silent as she walked next to Seiya. It made him feel uneasy. Something was wrong and he needed to know what happened. "Odango, I'm really worried about you."
"Hmm?" Usagi said. She vaguely paid attention after she heard her name. She noticed the look on his face. "Oh…" She wasn't sure how much she wanted to reveal. "I didn't get a lot of sleep last night."
Seiya waited for her continue but she did not. "You had a dream again last night."
Usagi looked at him wide eyed. "…yeah." She was amazed how easily Seiya was able to read her. At that moment she realized she was hiding things from him again. They were supposed to share everything with each other and she wasn't living up to that expectation.
It wasn't difficult for Seiya to determine what the dream had been about. He suddenly reached out and hugged her tightly.
"Sei…ya…" she whispered. She didn't understand his actions.
"I don't care if the dream was about Endymion again… I want to know what is bothering you. I want to help you… but I can't if you don't confide in me." He whispered near her ear. He sounded hurt.
Usagi's eyes softened as she hugged him back. He really cared about her and wanted to hear everything, even if it was something he rather not hear from her. She smiled lightly. This is why she picked him, she told herself. "Are you sure… I just don't want things to turn out how they did before…"
Seiya pulled away from her to state, "I promise I won't go back to Mamoru-san's apartment to fight him again. That was wrong."
Usagi smiled at his word choice. The smile quickly faded. "It was about the Silver Millennium…" She explained. "The Royal Family from the Golden Kingdom visited the Silver Millennium for the first time. My mother ushered the King and Queen into some meetings, the other senshi left to continue their training. I ended up giving Endymion a tour of the kingdom. It was the first time we met…" Her voice trailed off as she thought about what else she wanted to include. "We discussed what it was like to grow up on our respective planets…I remember I was fascinated with Earth and wanted to visit."
Seiya's gut told him there was a little more to the dream but he wasn't sure if he wanted to hear the missing part. "The first time you met, huh?"
Usagi nodded her head. "Yeah… it was kind of weird to remember that…. Then I woke up and went outside for some air and it started to rain!" She whined as she recalled being drenched in her nightshirt. "I was annoyed and sat down by table and hit my knee on it!" She lifted her skirt a few inches above her knee to showcase her bruise.
Seiya shook his head. "My, my, Odango." He teased light heartedly. "You can't be around anything with a sharp edge!" He knew his remark would generate a response that uplifted her mood.
"I'm not that bad!" Usagi pouted her lips at him. She then laughed. "Thank you Seiya… I feel better. I just… didn't want to talk about it since… it would be difficult to hear…."
"It doesn't matter what it is about, Odango. I care about you and everything you are going through." He placed an arm around her shoulders. "We're a team now. You and I."
Usagi's cheeks reddened. "A team…" She repeated slowly. She looked up at him and smiled. "I like the sound of that-" Before she could continue, she was cut off by a kiss. She felt like she melted in his arms. Her cheeks were slightly flushed when they separated. She felt more relaxed until she glanced at her watch. They were going to be late unless they ran to school. "Not again! We have less than 15 minutes!"
"Thank you for this morning," Usagi said to Seiya as she tried to avoid a yawn escaping from her lips. She opened her locker to retrieve her change of shoes. She struggled to remain awake throughout the day.
"It's what a good boyfriend does…" Seiya winked at her.
"I heard a good boyfriend also buys snacks!"
Seiya shook his head slightly back and forth. Usagi was back to normal. "We might be able to find something…." Seiya reached over to grab his book bag. But it was not next him. "I'll be right back. I left my bag in the classroom."
Usagi nodded her head. "I'll wait for you at the school gate." She turned and walked to the entrance gate of the school. Minako and Makoto had after school activities today. She wasn't sure about the whereabouts of Ami. Now that they were in different classrooms she didn't see Ami as much. She stood just outside the entrance gate on the sidewalk. She turned around and faced the school, her back to the street.
"Usagi-chan!" Naru said happily as she approached her. "You seem a lot happier than the last time I had a chance to talk to you."
Usagi smiled at Naru. "Things are getting better this week."
"Based on how everyone is talking around school… I'm guessing you chose Seiya-san over Mamoru-san." Naru didn't miss anything. She wanted to wait until she was able to talk to Usagi alone. A part of her was surprised she chose Seiya over Mamoru, given their history.
"Yeah… it wasn't easy…" Usagi kept her response simple. She didn't want to discuss with Naru just how difficult it had been for her.
"I could only imagine…" Naru tried to sound reassuring. "I'm just glad you were able to make a decision."
"It was… the right decision. I think everything is going to work out." Usagi realized while she talked to Naru how little time she spent with her. Before she became a senshi she was always hanging out with Naru. A part of her regretted not seeing her as much. But being with Naru also put her at risk in case of an attack. The villains always seemed to find her.
"I'm going to get going…" Naru said as she noticed a dark long haired figure approaching. "I image the two of you want to spend some time together."
"Naru-chan!" Usagi blushed a crimson shade. She couldn't believe what her friend was suggesting. She felt relieved when she saw Seiya. She hoped Naru would stop teasing her.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Usagi-chan!" Naru quickly disappeared before Usagi could say anything else.
Usagi shook her head. She couldn't believe Naru's comment!
"Sorry about that," Seiya apologized. He was a few feet behind Usagi and closing in when a large golden boomerang of yellowish orange energy flew between them. If Seiya had been any closer, he would have been hit.
The duo immediately turned in the direction of the energy attack. They found Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, the two senshi did not appear happy.
Usagi narrowed her eyes. She couldn't believe they nearly tried to attack Seiya again. She had thought they were finally moving pass this. She was about to say something when she heard a noise behind her as the energy connected with something.
She whipped her head to the other side to see several crystal minions being broken into small pieces.
Sailor Neptune walked forward to them. "Are you alright?" She asked both of them. She held her Deep Aqua Mirror in her arms.
Usagi numbly nodded her head. They weren't trying to attack Seiya. They had saved Seiya from being attack by the enemy. They had saved both of them.
"…Thanks…" Seiya slowly responded in disbelief. He never thought he would see the day when the Outer Senshi would help him.
Sailor Neptune smiled slightly and rushed forward with her mirror to be in range to attack. She had to be closer to the enemies than Sailor Uranus to use her talisman.
Sailor Uranus moved closer to them and instructed them, "Wait here." She then ran past them with her sword. She made a few quick slashes with her sword and the remaining minions were destroyed.
Seconds later, another group of crystal minions arrived steadying themselves to attack.
"My, my, they are persistent today…" Sailor Neptune said to her partner. "Submarine Reflection!"
Usagi looked around the area and realized they were alone after the attack started. She wanted to end this. "Cosmos Crystal Power, Make Up!" White ribbons quickly formed around Usagi's body transforming into a fuku. "Let me handle this," she instructed the two Outer Senshi and Seiya.
Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune took a few steps back. They weren't about to argue with their Princess.
Sailor Cosmos needed a wide spread attack. She thought about the one she used the other day, but she didn't think it would be sufficient to stop all of the minions. New words began to form in her mind. "Luminous…." The crystal orb at the top of her staff shone brightly, causing all of the minions to stop in their tracks. Miniature twinkling stars began to circle the orb. The stars began to grow brighter. "Hail." The intensity of the lights increased, nearly blinding those nearby. "Storm!" The attack became three solid beams of light, destroying all of the minions in its path. Only a few minions remained after her attack.
Sailor Uranus destroyed the rest of the remaining crystal minions with her sword.
Sailor Cosmos searched the area around them for a woman with long pale-pink hair tied in a ponytail. She expected to see Sedena hiding somewhere. "Where are you?" Sailor Cosmos shouted.
Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune exchanged confused glances at one another before they looked over at Seiya. Seiya shrugged his shoulders. They stood still, unsure of what to do next.
"I know you are here… trying to test me again, Sedena", Sailor Cosmos' eyes darted back and forth. She knew the woman was here. She could feel it.
A slow, round of applause echoed down one of the alley ways.
Sailor Cosmos whipped around in that direction.
Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune raised their talismans again.
Seiya clutched his transformation headset in his pocket. Usagi might have said she could handle the crystal minions on his own, but he wasn't about to let her face this Black Moon woman on her own.
The pale-pink hair woman emerged from the shadows, smiling back at them. She wore a pale blue pantsuit with dress sandals. She pulled her dark sunglass off her face. "You're getting better, Guardian. You were able to sense my presence. I wonder what other senses were sharpened when you were inside that crystal. Had I known how the crystal would have benefited you, I would have broken you out myself…. And then killed you while you were still weak."
"You're the one that attacked her yesterday…." Seiya stated as he began to piece everything together.
Sedena unleashed a boisterous laugh. "I guess I'm becoming famous… on this little blue sphere." She turned to eye Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. "Hmm… you don't seem to pose much of a threat either. It took several attacks from both of you to stop my crystal warriors."
Sailor Uranus let out a low growl in her throat. "I'll show you how much of a threat I can be."
Sedena lowered her head slightly and displayed a wicked grin. "I look forward to our next encounter, Guardian." She turned around and walked away, vanishing in the process.
Sailor Cosmos sighed. She walked over to the two senshi and Seiya. "That is Sedena…" Her eyes displayed frustration. "She is very … ruthless. She seems to be testing me… to understand my powers."
"When did you learn an attack like that?" Sailor Neptune asked in curiosity.
"The other girls wanted to continue the training I began on Kinmoku…" Sailor Cosmos spoke softly. "I've been working on being able to hit multiple targets at once."
Seiya smiled slightly. He recalled the last training she completed on his home planet before she collapsed. "You were just starting to learn to control it. I'm glad they managed to drag you off to training after school." Seiya teased her lightly.
Sailor Uranus clenched her hand into a fist. There was a lot going on behind the scenes that she was unaware of due to her anger at Usagi choosing Seiya. How much more would she miss? "You've made a lot of progress-" She abruptly stopped speaking when her brooch began to glow along with Sailor Neptune's.
Sailor Neptune gasped and looked down at the bow on chest. She didn't understand what was happening. The light began to dim and a golden crescent moon adorned her brooch. She stared at the mark, wide-eyed. She immediately looked over at her partner.
Sailor Uranus felt a sense of relief wash over her body. She was now officially considered a member of the Royal Court of the Silver Millennium. She was a protector.
Sailor Cosmos' eyes widen slightly at the new marks. "Oh wow… I still don't understand the process…." She absent mindedly tapped her lips. "I think almost everyone has one now…"
"Except, Hotaru-chan…" Sailor Uranus chimed in.
"I can't think of the last time I've seen her…" Sailor Cosmos could not recall the last time she saw Sailor Saturn. "I'm sure I will see her again soon." She walked over to Sailor Uranus. "I …misjudged you. At first I thought you were attacking Seiya, but you were protecting us. Thank you." She smiled genuinely at her.
Sailor Uranus chuckled. "It's our duty to keep you safe, Princess." She paused. She was about to make a derogatory remark at Seiya, but stopped herself. She gave a small nod to Sailor Neptune signaling her it was time for them to leave.
The two senshi walked past Seiya. Sailor Uranus stopped, "You better not make her cry," she threatened.
Seiya glared at Sailor Uranus. He prepared a retort. Then he saw the semi evil-looking smile from Sailor Neptune. It was her way of agreeing with her partner. The two Outer Senshi left without another word.
Usagi walked over to Seiya. "That…went better than I thought."
"I guess not everyone approves of your decision…of us," Seiya's tone alluded some of the frustration he felt. He was tired of constantly defining their new relationship to everyone. Taiki and Yaten finally seemed to leave him alone now that Usagi chose him. The Inner Senshi were fine, the Outer Senshi still hated his guts… and then there was Mamoru.
Usagi lightly touched his arm. "Things will get better…they just need time to adjust. I know they will come around…eventually." She tried to be reassuring.
Seiya turned to Usagi to face her. "As long as I have you, it's worth it." He flashed her a smile that made her blush slightly. He always had a way with words.
"Seiya…" She whispered. She was about to say something else until her stomach growled. She tear-dropped.
Seiya laughed loudly. "I think it's time to find food." He glanced down the street trying to find his book bag. "This might take a few minutes… where is my stuff?"
While Usagi helped him find his book bag she said, "This is a great way to end our first week of school."
Usagi sat back in the booth rubbing her stomach, now full of food. She enjoyed the large bowl of udon and steam buns she just ate. She was on her third ice tea.
It still amazed Seiya the amount of food she was able to consume in such a short period of time. But he was glad she was eating since it meant she was feeling better. Whenever she didn't have an appetite, he would be worried. He was also glad that the back of the restaurant was empty, allowing them space to talk.
"How are Taiki-san and Yaten-kun adjusting?"
"It was difficult for them at first…but I think they are starting to come around. I know Yaten won't admit it, but he is glad to be back on Earth. There are some things he missed about this place."
"Ohhh?" Usagi arched an eyebrow, sensing more to Seiya's story then he was revealing.
"O…Odango… it's not like that," Seiya immediately tried to back track.
"Like what?" Usagi asked, inching forward. When Seiya didn't respond she leaned back in the booth. "Well… I know Minako-chan is happy."
Seiya smirked, but didn't say anything. Yaten would admit the truth to them once he was ready. However, there were more pressing things he wanted to discuss with Usagi. "You seem a little different when… you're Sailor Cosmos."
Usagi pouted her lips. "After I transform…I can feel all of this energy coursing through me." She tried to explain how she felt every time she was Sailor Cosmos. "I feel… confident in my powers. I feel like…I can finally protect everyone…" She smiled and gave half a laugh. "Yet, everyone wants to protect me."
Seiya reached across the table to hold her hand. "We are all worried about you and want to see you safe. I don't know what I would do if something happened to you." Seiya explained to her. He would finally have a chance to talk to her about Nemesis. "I was so worried about you when you were captured in front of me. I was upset that the last time I was able to talk to you was in Mamoru-san's apartment. Things…didn't end well. I had to make sure you were okay, but I couldn't. I never had the chance." He poured out his feelings to her.
Usagi's eyes soften when she thought about that day. "I'm so sorry about everything," Usagi whispered. "I never meant for things to turn out as they did…especially when I saw Endymion at the Silver Millennium."
He knew Mamoru would always have a place in Usagi's heart. Endymion would also have a place in her heart as well. This is a fact he still needed to work on accepting in order for him to move forward. "Odango," he said after a moment. "Whatever happened in the past with Mamoru-san…it's in the past. Any issues that we have had because of it…it doesn't matter. You and I in the present is what matters." It was his way of trying to move pass the kiss Serenity had shared with Endymion at the Silver Millennium.
Usagi bit her lip. She never told Seiya about what happened when she spent the day with Mamoru in the park and at his apartment. "Seiya…the other day…that I spent with Mamo-chan..."
"It doesn't matter, Odango. Since you told me the other day that you wanted to be with me…I want to focus on us now. The past is in the past." Seiya squeeze her hand tightly. He could only imagine what Mamoru had said to Usagi. He was sure Mamoru tried to kiss or did kiss her. He didn't want to hear it because it would only frustrate him further. It was better if he didn't know.
Usagi looked up into Seiya's eyes and finally understood. She let out a small smile. "Okay…" she finally said. "It's in the past," she agreed. They sat in silence for several minutes enjoying each other's company.
"There is something else I wanted to talk to you about, Odango." His tone again was serious. "As you know, Taiki, Yaten, and I, plan on returning to music again next year. Once the danger has past," he clarified. "Since we are staying here… we will need to earn a living after all…" He tried to find the best way to explain. "Yaten and Taiki expressed an interest in trying to see more of the Earth as well."
Usagi listened intently, unsure why Seiya was telling her all of this. "You've talk about returning to music before…I don't understand…" She gave him a questioning glance.
He squeezed her hand again tightly. "With everything going on, we have a lot of work to do. Songs to write, record, promotional events and concerts in between. It's going to become a little more difficult to spend time with you outside of school."
"An idol's time is precious, huh?" She tried to tease him to cover up how she felt. She enjoyed all of the time she spent with Seiya. She noticed he seemed to be busier since they returned to school. "You've been busier lately. Is something going on?"
"After speaking with our manager, he wants to arrange a comeback tour of sorts…"
Usagi's eyes brightened. "I think that's a great idea! You'll be able to see a lot of Japan that way."
"The manger is pushing for more than just Japan."
"How much more…?"
"Well…" Seiya struggled with the right way to break the news to her. "He wants to take it global."
"Oh…" Usagi's tone immediately changed. She tried to be happy for him, but it meant he would be gone for a while and she would remain in Japan. But it was good for his career, she argued with herself. "Where would you go?"
"Nothing is finalized yet…but Australia, parts of Asia, North American, and South America." He could see the disappointment in her face. "But before any of that happens we still have to make a public announcement about our return. That will be in a few weeks. Assuming we stop the Black Moon first."
Usagi tried her best to smile. "It sounds like a great idea. Did they pick a date yet?"
"Sometime after graduation. Taiki was pretty adamant about us finishing our studies first. And of course the manager agreed." He paused to look at her. "It's going to be hard to be so far away after graduation." Seiya admitted. A part of him hated that it was now his turn to get on a plane and be far away from Usagi.
Usagi let out a small laugh to cover up her sadness. "It will be easy to see you all the time with my new abilities!" She said brightly. She tried to be optimistic. "I'm not going to let something as small as an ocean or two get in the way." The smile disappeared from her face when she thought about the gravity of her words. A part of her asked how different things would have been with Mamoru when he had been in America, if she had the abilities of Sailor Cosmos. She would have known he died sooner. The thought sent a shiver down her spine.
Seiya immediately noticed the change in Usagi. He had a pretty good guess what thoughts entered her mind. He gave her a large smile to try to brighten the mood. "You're right. It would be easier to see each other." He wasn't sure how accurate the statement was, but it relaxed Usagi slightly. "I know everything will be alright."
"Yeah…" Usagi said. She glanced down at his hand, still holding hers tightly.
"I know what would cheer you up," Seiya grinned. "I know this ice cream place not too far from here…" Seiya didn't have to say anything else.
"Ice cream!" Usagi pulled her hand back and bolted up. Seiya had said the magic word. It was the pick me-up she needed.
Seiya smiled. He wanted to talk to Usagi more, but he had to do something to cheer her up first.
Usagi finished her ice cream and happily walked next to Seiya towards the direction of her home. "I can't believe this is my final year of high school. I don't even know what I am going to do after graduation. It's something I never thought about. I always focused on finishing school while defeating the current enemy we faced." For years her plan was to finish school, get married to Mamoru, start a family, and become Queen of Crystal Tokyo. All of a sudden she didn't have a well laid out plan anymore. A part of her felt nervous to not know and a part of her felt relieved. Everything was no longer planned out before her. She felt a sense of freedom.
"Hmmm… did you want to try to start a career…go to college?" Seiya rambled off. He wasn't sure how to respond to Usagi's statement. It was at this moment that Seiya realized he needed to start thinking about his future and their future together. A majority of his life was spent training as a Sailor Starlight and fulfilling his duties to Princess Kakyuu and to his home planet. He had never had to really worry about the future because there was always another mission. However, once they defeated the Black Moon, he would have the freedom to live a normal life. Well, as normal as an idol could live.
They were halfway to Usagi's house when Seiya realized the sun was already setting in the sky. Seiya looked at his watch and grumbled. "Odango, I have to get going. I'm supposed to work on a project with Taiki and Yaten."
"Oh…" She tried to conceal the disappointment she felt. "I guess an idol's time is precious…"
"Yeah…we're still in the process of writing some new songs. We're supposed to be in the studio next week to record our first new song. Our manager wants us to have it ready when we make our official announcement in the upcoming weeks."
"I look forward to hearing it," Usagi smiled. She loved to hear his voice.
"You've already heard some of it."
Usagi gave him a questioning look. Then she remembered the song lyrics she had seen on Kinmoku. "You've finish it?"
"Yeah."
"Well… I'll get going." Usagi was about to turn away to start her remaining walk home until Seiya stopped her. "Hmm?"
He pulled her close to him and hugged her tightly. He didn't say anything. He wanted to spend more time with her, but he had other commitments he had to meet. "I'll call you tomorrow."
Usagi nodded her head slightly. She felt so warm and relaxed in his arms; a sense of calm for the first time in the past two weeks washed over her. She hugged him back tightly for a moment before she pulled apart.
Seiya kissed her once more before leaving.
Usagi stood still for a few moments. She frowned at the thought of Seiya being on tour. But at the same time it was something she should have expected. He is an idol. This is his career and she would be supportive.
She let out a loud sigh and began the walk home. A question was nagging at her and she knew no one would have an answer for her. Her recent dreams always involved the Silver Millennium whether it was with Endymion or Seiya. Would she have to leave Earth to live on the Moon again? She wasn't ready to leave this planet. Everyone was here. She wasn't ready to be Queen neither. She had plenty of time to argue with herself, even though she knew she was lying to herself.
A gust of wind blew her hair to the side. She rubbed her bare arms slightly. The temperatures were beginning to change and soon winter would be approaching. Christmas. It was one of her favorite holidays. This year would be really special. She wanted to do something special with everyone, it would be the last one before they finish school. She imagined Ami would be leaving soon to go to Germany or America to study to be a doctor. She had put her studies on hold once before to be a senshi and if the Black Moon was gone, Ami would finally be able to follow her dreams. Minako would start pursuing her own career to be an idol. Makoto would attend culinary school. Rei would start learning how to manage the shrine. Usagi pouted, she didn't have anything exciting planned. At some point she would probably get married. Her cheeks flushed. That wouldn't be for a while.
"I didn't think any of your protectors would leave you alone, Guardian."
Usagi's head snapped up at the sound of Sedena's voice. Her hand immediately went to her crystal pendant. Her eyes narrowed at the sight of Sedena and Ixion. "What are you doing here?" She eyed them carefully. She was sure that both of them would challenge her to a fight. Had they been patiently waiting behind the shadows until Seiya had left?
"We're becoming more familiar with our soon to be home," Ixion taunted. "I can't wait for this planet to get what is coming to it… and to its people." He took a few steps forward. "Time is running out."
"No," Usagi said with more confidence then she felt. "Your time is running out." She lightly brushed her hand against the crystal around her neck. "Cosmos Crystal Power, Make Up!" Her body became engulfed in prism colored light as her hair turned from blonde to white. Her staff appeared in her hands and she slowly opened her eyes ready for her next battle. She should probably call the others for help, but she needed to prove to herself that she was capable of protecting them and this planet. After all, she was the true target.
Sedena gestured with her hand and dozens of crystal minions appeared around her. She wanted to see how the Guardian would fend for herself. She was beginning to understand her fighting patterns. "I'm curious to see how you plan on hitting so many at once. None of your attacks will make it possible for you to hit all at once."
Sailor Cosmos inhaled sharply. She knew Sedena was correct, but she couldn't let her know the uneasiness she now felt with her additional adversaries. She needed a powerful, semi-wide range attack, one that she hadn't used much in front of Sedena. "Starlight Breaker!" She launched the attack at the minions. There was no turning back now that the battle begun.
She felt something hit her back. Several more minions swarmed Sailor Cosmos from behind. They appeared behind her and surrounded her. Her enemies were in her blind spot. She hadn't trained herself enough to fight on her own. She wasn't ready. She cleared her thoughts and pushed forward. She clutched her staff tightly. Her ability to defend herself would be severity hampered without her weapon. She was hit hard on the back of her neck making her stumble forward onto the ground. Her staff landed just out of her fingertip's reach.
Sailor Cosmos immediately tried to stretch her arm out and reach for her staff. But minions stood in her way. A few minions stood over her. Their hands turned into daggers. Her mouth parted slightly. They were about to stab her and she didn't have anything she could use to defend herself. She had been stubborn in her decision to not call the others for help and now she was about to pay for it. She looked away.
She heard the clang of metal. She was unhurt. She looked up and saw a large sword hitting several of the minions. She looked up at her savior and gasped, "Endymion…" She was thankful for his appearance.
He turned his head slightly to ask her, "Are you alright?" His attention was focused on the other minions.
"Yes…" Sailor Cosmos responded. She was relieved to see him. Then she remembered she was still in a battle. She collected her staff. She was about to stand up and saw Endymion's outstretched hand to help her stand up. She grabbed his hand and he pulled her up. She now stood a few steps to his side.
"I'll always be here for you, Serenity," He said softly, just loud enough only for her to hear.
The way he whispered her name sent a chill down Sailor Cosmos' spine. She could hear the pain in his voice. He was still hurt after their last conversation.
Endymion took a few steps forward with his sword raised, "I'm not going to let you attack her again." He boldly said to Sedena and Ixion. He recognized Ixion from previous encounters. This was his first time seeing Sedena, but it was clear Sedena was part of the Black Moon.
Ixion laughed. "I don't know what you think you can actually do against us." Ixion eyed him carefully to try to strike a nerve. He despised anyone trying to protect this forsaken planet.
"Your crystal followers seemed to go down easily," Endymion challenged back.
Sedena rolled her eyes. "So… the Prince of Earth protects the damsel in distress. This is too cliché." Her eyes narrowed when she remembered some of her original anger she felt toward the Earth. "It is your fault the Silver Millennium was destroyed… you couldn't stop Beryl on your own so you fled. Bringing destruction with you. And denying us the chance to seek our revenge."
Prince Endymion looked at Sedena in confusion. "Who… are you?"
"Why not ask your…friend," Sedena spat back in annoyance.
Ixion smirked and decided to add in to the fun. "Your power might have grown, but you still have a long way to go." He decided to try a different approach with the Prince. "It's amazing how well the two of you still work together." He knew Endymion could be disposed of with Sedena's help but then they would have to deal with the wrath of the Guardian. She would present a challenge. It was also not on Eris' plan. The crystals were now all placed within the city. The Black Crystal was finally complete. All that was left was the final preparations for the Master. He knew better than do anything that would disrupt Eris' plan.
"We have what we came for", Sedena smirked. "Maybe next time…You can protect yourself, Guardian, instead of always relying on others." Sedena nodded her head at Ixion and they both vanished.
Sailor Cosmos let out a large sigh while she gripped her staff tightly. She was becoming fed up with the Black Moon.
Prince Endymion walked over to Sailor Cosmos, visually inspecting her for any sign of injuries. He found none. "What happened?"
"That woman, Sedena, and her comrade where waiting to catch me off guard for their chance to attack me. This was the second time she attacked me today," Sailor Cosmos said with displeasure. "Early today, she tried to attack me at school, but she was stopped by Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune."
"Hmm…" He responded. There was so much he wanted to say to her, but he couldn't find the words. "They seem to have clearly targeted you. It worries me, Usako." Mamoru now stood before her since the danger past.
Usagi didn't respond right away. "You surprised me…" She said softly. "I expected to see Tuxedo Kamen… not Endymion." She didn't understand why he was in a different form.
"When you were on Nemesis…I realized that as Tuxedo Kamen there was little I could do to stop the enemy. I seem to be stronger as Endymion. In that form, I can do a better job of protecting you." He stood close to her. He fought back the urge to take her in his arms and embrace her. "I guess I had good timing today."
"So… does that mean I won't see you as Tuxedo Kamen again?" Usagi asked for clarification.
"Yes," Mamoru said solemnly.
"It just surprised me…" Usagi said slowly. It was difficult for her to see him as Endymion, especially after the recent dream. When she saw him as Mamoru it was a little easier for her to distance herself from him. But something within her stirred when she saw him as Endymion and he called her Serenity. The part of her that is still Princess Serenity wouldn't let her forget their past so easily. She closed her eyes tightly trying to push past the overwhelming emotions she was experiencing.
Mamoru firmly placed a hand on her shoulder.
Usagi's eyes snapped open and she raised her head to look up at him.
"I'm worried. They attacked you twice in one day. We have to find them and stop them. They're only going to become more ruthless. I want to help you, Usako."
The lyrics of the song she heard on the radio the other day played in her mind in the background. Before she could respond, her communicator beeped.
It was Rei and she wanted Usagi to come to the shrine immediately. She had new information for her. "I'll be there soon," Usagi slowly responded.
She smiled at Mamoru lightly, "Thank you for your help…but I have to go."
Mamoru shook his head at her. "I'm not letting you walk over there by yourself, Usako. They might come back and attack you again. I won't give them the opportunity."
"It's okay, Mamo-chan… I'll be okay." She tried to reassure him. She knew she shouldn't call him Mamo-chan any more, but it was too difficult to call him anything but Mamo-chan.
"No, Usako." Mamoru put his foot down. "I'm not going to let you go by yourself." His tone softened, "I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if anything happened to you."
Usagi wasn't going to fight him. She knew he was correct. She was not looking forward to the awkward walk to the shrine. "Well…I guess we should get going. You know how impatient Rei-chan can be."
The couple walked in silence for the first five minutes before Usagi couldn't take it anymore. She had told him she wanted to be friends. Friends are supposed to be able to talk about anything. "How… how have you been?" She finally stammered. She didn't know what else to ask him under the circumstances.
Mamoru was surprised by her question. "It's been difficult…" he admitted. He didn't want to talk about his feelings and the depression he had felt during the past week. He didn't want to discuss how many times he nearly went to her house, called her on the telephone or considered meeting her at school in order to talk to her. He changed the subject. "Harvard contacted me again about resuming my studies in the Spring semester. I thought about it for a while and I am going to give it another go." He studied Usagi for a reaction.
"That's great, Mamo-chan. I know your studies are really important to you and I think it is wonderful that you've been given a chance to complete them." She smiled slightly. She began to feel a little better. "Good luck, Mamo-chan."
"Of course that won't be until after the New Year. I know we will stop the Black Moon before then." He assured her. He didn't want to think he was running out on her right after he had promised her he would protect her. "Speaking of studies, did you manage to finish everything before school resumed?"
Usagi chuckled. "Barely! You would think they would let us enjoy our last summer break as high schoolers instead of giving us lots of projects."
Mamoru laughed at Usagi's remark. "Some things don't change."
"Hey!" Usagi responded becoming defensive. "I had a very busy break! But I finished it all!"
She was the same as always. "I'm sure you had some help," Mamoru said with a knowing glance.
"Well… I wasn't even on this planet for most of the break. Plus Ami-chan and Taiki-san made sure I finished everything." Usagi tried to not mention any of the Three Lights when she was around Mamoru. She assumed hearing about them would only frustrate him. "Sorry…" She added meekly.
"It's okay…" Mamoru said. He hated to admit it but, "They're all a part of your life now." For the next few minutes there was an uneasy silence. This time Mamoru broke the silence, "Are you happy, Usako?"
Usagi was surprised by his question. "Ye...yeah…" She slowly responded. She was pretty sure she was happy. "It's just… a lot of people are unhappy about it and I wish everyone could be happy." Her voice became really low. "Even though I know it's impossible."
"Life is kind of funny like that," Mamoru said. He couldn't hold it back anymore. He needed to ask her about the information he learned from Rei the night Usagi told him she chose Seiya. "There is something that I learned the other day that has been bothering me… I wonder if you can clarify something for me."
Usagi gave him a confused look, "…Sure."
Mamoru stopped walking to face her. "Usako, did you have dreams of an alternate future at the Silver Millennium?" He didn't want to flat out ask her if the dreams were about Seiya, yet.
The color drained from her face. "How… how do you know about that?"
Mamoru shook his head sadly. "I wish you would have told me about those dreams sooner, Usako." He paused when he thought of a time he had confusing dreams of his future. "You can't always believe dreams that you have of the future… I made that mistake once."
Usagi's lips twitched. "Don't do that, Mamo-chan." She immediately picked up what he was insinuating. "This is a lot different than the dreams you had. I have premonitions of the future. It's one of my new abilities I gained as Sailor Cosmos. All of the ones I've had so far have come true."
He was surprised by her defensiveness. "I just wanted to know if what you saw influenced your decision."
"I-I don't know…" Usagi stammered. "I don't think so…I mean I've also had dreams of the past at the Silver Millennium with you," Usagi gasped and covered her mouth. She revealed more than she anticipated.
"..What kind of dreams?" Mamoru asked. He wanted to know everything.
"They're…past memories of Serenity's… about… well… various things…" Usagi tried her best to be vague and avoid blushing at some of the memories. Usagi cleared her throat. "I'm told it's natural since everyone believes I'm going to become Queen soon…"
"Memories about various things…? Usako, you're blushing." He moved closer to her. He wanted to know more.
"I ah.. umm…" She fumbled with her words. She knew Mamoru was going to continue to ask her about those memories. "The last one was about… the first time we met. You visited the Moon with your parents."
"My… parents…" Mamoru repeatedly slowly, he sighed slowly. "I still can't remember them. Will I ever receive those memories back?"
"I don't know…"
"Can you describe to me what they looked like?"
"Sure…" Usagi was surprised by his question, but also relieved to have the topic changed.
Sailor Pluto paused at the large door in front of her. She tried to recall the last time she stood in this very spot. She could not remember. She pushed the door but it did not budge. A scowl crossed her face. She gathered enough courage to explore this option and now she was denied access. She pushed against the door again, harder this time. The door groaned and inched forward slightly. She walked to the right of the door and rested her staff against the wall. She would need to use all of her body weight to push the door open. She slammed her shoulder against the door. The door gradually began to move with each push. The door was nearly open.
She walked back over to her Time Staff. When she opened the door she did not want to be unarmed. With a final push, the door finally opened revealing a large room full of bookshelves. She was amazed at the condition of the library. After a millennium of nonuse, the objects in the library seemed to be in good condition.
"The wealth of knowledge of the Silver Millennium, Bodleian." She smiled. She began to feel optimistic about her plan. If all the materials were still in the library, she should be able to read up on the myth passed down from her family.
She walked past the entrance way. Her boots clicked loudly in the empty room. Even when the planet was populated, this room was always quiet but never to this extent. It made her feel uneasy. She increased her pace. The sounds of footsteps increased. She paused at a large rotunda. If she went to the right she would be in the rare materials section. If she continued straight she would enter the historical section of the library. Each planet stored important information there that was meant to be kept in secret. Those outside of the Royal Families were not allowed past that door, with the exception of a few trusted clerks.
She was getting closer. She walked the short distance to the door. She attempted to pull door outward toward her. The door did not budge. A beeping sound admitted to the side of the door. "Of course…" Sailor Pluto said while shaking her head. How could she have forgotten about some of the security measures that were in place to protect the delicate information that lie beyond. She took the glove off her left hand and placed her palm on top of a scanner to the left of the door. Biometrics was common place during the Silver Millennium.
The scanner beeped and turned green. "Welcome, Princess Setsuna." The robotic voice responded. The door hinges clanged as levers from within move to the side. A clicking sound occurred near the door handle and the door opened. She opened the door the rest of the way and quickly closed the door behind her. She wanted to make sure she was alone in this room.
She immediately began to walk to the past dozens of bookshelf lined high with books in long rows as far as the eye could see. She paused at the end of one of the bookcases and observed the astrological symbol for Saturn. She continued to move further back into the room past several more rows. She paused again this time and saw the mark of Uranus. She was getting closer. She turned around to look at the rows of books she walked past. The entire history of this universe up to the destruction of the Silver Millennium resided in this room. Ami would love this room.
Sailor Pluto dismissed the thought and spun around on her heels to resume her quest. She walked past several more rows of bookshelves until she finally found the symbol of her homeland, Pluto. She sighed in relief. She was finally in the right section; now the real task begun. She needed to find the right book and she did not have a guide to help her. She wasn't sure where to start. She decided on a history of the Royal Families of Pluto chronicling several centuries.
She began to skim through the first book. She didn't have much time before the others would notice her absence. She had to make every second count.
Usagi paused at the top of the staircase to catch her breath, Mamoru waited with her. Neither one knew why Rei wanted to talk to her right away. "Okay," Usagi said as she took a few steps forward. It did not take her long to see Rei standing outside the shrine entrance.
Rei felt relieved when she saw Usagi, her expression changed to one of surprise at the sight of Mamoru accompanying her. "It's probably better that you're both here." Rei said as a greeting. Rei directed them to a meeting room inside the shrine. The three walked in silence.
"Good evening, Princess," Akari greeted Usagi as soon as she entered the room. "Ah! Prince Endymion, you are here as well."
Yui looked at the two standing next to each other and smiled. Everything must have worked out she assumed. She exchanged a smile with Nanami.
"You're all back," Usagi said as she looked around the room and noticed all eight of the Moon Senshi in the room.
"I'm glad to see you've finally come to your senses and left that Starlight," Yui exclaimed with relief.
"Yui-chan!" Ayane scolded her rude outburst.
Usagi took a deep breath before she addressed Yui. She should have anticipated such a reaction from some of the Moon Senshi since she was with Mamoru. "You shouldn't jump to conclusion like that Yui-chan… they're not always true."
Yui's smile turned to anger. She couldn't believe the Princess would abandon the Prince so easily. "I don't understand…"
Nanami was about to chime in but Natsuki lightly placed a hand on her arm as a way to stop her. She shook her head no. She leaned closer to her and whispered, "Later."
"That's enough!" Akari loudly stated. "We have more important things to discuss; we came here to tell the Princess of our findings."
Usagi sat down on an empty cushion near the door. Rei and Mamoru sat down to the sides of her. She waited for Akari to continue. She should tell them about her recent attacks by Sedena afterward.
"Rio-chan, can you explain it to them since you made the discovery?" Akari asked as she turned to face the silver haired woman in the room. "We've searched throughout the four main islands of Japan and were unsuccessful in locating the headquarters of Nemesis. We began to expand our search to the thousands of uninhabited islands. We started to the south between Kyushu and Okinawa. We found an island called Yokoate-Jima."
Usagi gasped at the information, anxious to know more. She wanted to end the conflict with the Black Moon. She leaned forward.
"What does the island look like?" Mamoru asked. The island's name was not familiar to him.
"A majority of the island is a volcano. It gives the Black Moon the perfect cover. But we should move quickly. We wanted to hear your thoughts before we shared this information with the other senshi."
Usagi nodded her head. "I'm tired of the Black Moon. They attacked me after school today when I was with Seiya. Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune stopped Sedena. They both received crescent moon marks on their brooches this afternoon."
A few of the Moon Senshi gasped at this information, most waited for her to continue.
"Who is Sedena?" Hana asked, "I do not recognize that name."
"Sedena seems to be a powerful member of the Black Moon. From what I understand, she was on Nemesis…watching over me when I was enclosed in the crystal. She seems to be testing my abilities. Shortly after Seiya left me, Sedena attacked me again. This time she had Ixion with her. I was fortunate to be saved by Endymion."
"They're getting desperate," Ayane said after listening to Usagi's story. "We should attack them right away, before daybreak. The darkness will give us the advantage. I think the attacks are only going to increase."
"That's not enough time," Rei interjected. "We need to rest before we launch an all-out attack. The others don't even know what is going on."
"The longer we wait, the more opportunities they will have to attack the Princess," Rin said. Her comment struck a nerve.
"She's right," Mamoru interjected. "But before we strategize; we must inform the other senshi since we will need everyone's help to stop the Black Moon." He was concerned about Usako's well-being. He wanted to do everything he could to protect her.
"I agree with Mamoru-san," Rei said softly. "The others would want to be included in this. I'll call them here."
Sailor Pluto sighed as she placed the book back on the shelf. While she found a lot of valuable information, it was not what she was searching for her to execute her plan. She was about to pick up the next book, but her communicator beeped. She was needed back on Earth.
* The song Usagi listened to on the radio was "Listen to Your Heart" by Roxette
How well will some of the senshi work together knowing Usagi chose Seiya? Will it interfere with their ability to stop the Black Moon?
