CHAPTER 20: HOME
Everyone ran through the hallways following Laylah who ran ahead to lead them. Sara was only running for a couple of minutes until she started to feel dizzy and lightheaded. She slowed to a stop and put her hands on her head when Janner stopped behind her and made a sound to try to get everyone's attention. They all turned around and Nia ran to Sara, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I just feel dizzy."
Nia sighed, "You need water. Especially after getting hit in the head."
Janner made a whining sound and looked concern. Then Artham spoke, " Janner asks if she'll be okay."
"Yes, Janner she'll be okay." Nia said, "She just can't be running for to long."
"Should I carry her?" Artham asked.
Nia turned to Sara, "Would you be okay with that?"
"Yes."
Artham picked her up as Janner started to growl and sniff the air. "What is it?" Artham asked. Janner growled again.
"Janner says that there's Darkstoners coming!" Artham said.
"Follow me." Laylah said. And they continued to run through the halls of Castle Throg. It was when they turned down one last hallway and saw two large doors, they started to hear noises coming from behind them. They ran through the doorway and, like the one before, it was a tight fit for Janner but he got through quickly. The room was bigger so Janner could stand to his full height. They quickly closed the door and ran to the other side where there were two bigger doors. "There it is!" Laylah exclaimed. "That's the way out!"
They got to the doors and worked together to push them open. Soon they were hit with a fresh, chilly breeze. They walked out into the courtyard and looked at the night sky where the full moon welcomed them with light. They all stopped to take a breath. "I have water at my cave if you want some." Laylah told Sara.
"Thank you." Sara said. Suddenly more sounds of Darkstoners and Fangs came from the castle. They all ran to Laylah's cave for a few minutes. Once they got there they got water to drink they sat down to rest. "To be honest I would have never have guessed that everything that just happened would happen." Kalmar said.
"Ha! No kidding." Oskar said while puling out a handkerchief to wipe his sweat from his forehead.
"Hey Janner, how does it feel to be a giant creature?" Leeli asked.
Janner shrugged his shoulders while he yawned. "Unsure?" Leeli asked.
Janner nodded. "Don't worry," Esben said, "I'm sure you'll get used to it soon." Janner smiled.
"Ya know I might miss this cave. Especially that obstacle course." Laylah said pointing up to the ceiling where her obstacle course hanged.
"Well," Artham said, "If you ever decide to stay in Anniera there are plenty of forests with big trees. You could probably build one there. I remember when I built a tree house in one of those forests."
"Oh! You had the best treehouse ever." Esben smiled. "I remember we would try to sneak away from our T.H.A.G.S and hide in your treehouse."
"You think you could help me make one? If I do decide to stay?" Laylah asked.
"Of course." Artham answered.
"Hello?" A voice said from the entrance. Everybody braced themselves. "Who's there?" Esben asked. Then a creature that had the front half of an eagle and the back half of a cat."Please, I don't mean to threaten you."
"Then why are you here, Amrah!" Laylah said while crossing her arms. Everybody looked at Laylah.
"That's Amrah?" Artham asked.
Laylah nodded. "I know you have every right to go against me." Amrah said. "But I'm just looking for answers."
"Answers for what?" Kalmar asked.
Amrah opened her mouth then closed it trying to think of what to say. "Well, first of all what happened in that light?"
"That light was the Maker." Nia answered.
"The Maker?" Amrah asked. Everyone nodded.
Amrah stared at the ground thinking about what had happened, "And I have another question."
"What is it?" Kalmar asked.
"Is Anniera a place where I can call home? A place where there is hope?" Amrah asked slowly. She looked up at the Wingfeathers.
Kalmar walked to his father's side, "Papa," Esben looked at Kalmar, " The Maker told me that there was going to be a Darkstoner who wanted a different life. I think He was talking about Amrah."
"Are you sure?" Esben asked.
Kalmar nodded, " I feel like the Maker is telling me right now."
Esben smiled then nodded. Kalmar walked towards Amrah as Janner made a noise that sounded concerning. "It's okay Janner." Kalmar said. Janner tilted his head and looked confused before relaxing. Kalmar walked up to Amrah and said, "Anniera will always except those who wish to live differently."
Amrah looked surprised. "Really? After the way I hurt you?"
"I just want to do what the Maker would do. And I learned that He gives second chances. And He was willing to give a second chance then maybe I should too."
Amrah smiled. But this smile wasn't an evil smile. It was a smile full of relief and joy. The Maker really can change any heart. "Does anybody else know that you're here?" Rudric asked.
"Nobody knows that I'm here all though they are looking for you. So if we should all run to saftey it's now." Amrah said with a sad look in her eyes. Then a dragon roar came from the distance. Everyone ran outside and saw shadows from the west. "What is that?" Sara asked.
"I think it's the dragons!" Artham exclaimed. " Janner, can you smell their scent?" Janner sniffed the air and nodded while he made excited noises. Soon the dragons came and landed on the edge of the cave.
"Hi Hulwen!" Leeli exclaimed with a big smile on her face.
Hello Wingfeathers!
"She says hello." Artham repeated back.
"Boy, do we got a lot to tell you." Kalmar said.
And I have much to tell you! The Maker came and restored all the towns and farms. Even Castle Rysen is standing strong.
Artham stood there with his mouth open wide. "Artham, what is it? What's she sayin'?" Podo asked.
Artham repeated what Hulwen said then everyone turned to the dragon with surprised expressions. "Really!" Esben exclaimed. Hulwen nodded.
"Well, let's get going!" Nia said.
"Come on Grandpa you can ride on Hulwen with me!" Leeli said.
"Well…" Podo looked up at the dragon who smiled at him and nodded. Then Artham said, "Hulwen says that you can ride her and if you want, you can sail the seas again as long as you promise to never dragon hunt again."
Podo smiled and lifted his right hand and said, "You have my word." Hulwen nodded again as Podo climbed onto her back behind Leeli.
"I can't believe it." Esben said in awe.
"What?" Nia asked.
"The dragons have WINGS!" Esben exclaimed.
Nia laughed, "Come on." She grabbed his hand and lead him to one of the dragons.
"You guys go up ahead I'll teach Laylah how to fly. We'll catch up soon." Artham said, then Janner spoke in his mind, Would it be okay if you gave me few tips on flying for the first time. Artham smiled, "And Janner will join us."
"Hey, Janner can I ride on your back?" Kalmar said with a mischievous smile. Janner smiled and laid down so that Kalmar could get on his back.
"Kalmar if you're going to ride on his back while he's learning to fly then you have to hold tight and be careful." Nia said.
"Don't worry mamma. Careful is my middle name." Kalmar said. Then everyone was silent as they stared at Kalmar. "What?" Kalmar said as he shrugged his shoulders. Everyone laughed.
Rudric gave Sara a helping hand then climbed onto the dragon behind her. "Uh, need some help Mr. Reteep?" He asked.
"No, no. I got up this dragon before I'm sure I can do it again." Osar said as he struggled a bit to get onto the dragon. But soon he was on the dragon.
"Are you ready Amrah?" Kalmar asked.
Amrah was silent for a minute, looking at the Wingfeathers and the dragons. Until finally she open her eagle like wings and flew up a bit, "Let's go to Anneira." Soon the dragons lifted up into the sky leaving Artham, Laylah, and Janner with Kalmar on his back sitting in between the spikes.
"Now here is 'How to Fly 101'" Artham said. "First we'll start with gliding." They walked to the edge of the cliff. "So, spread your wings like this," Artham spread wings and Laylah and Janner copied his movements. " Then we're going to jump off and let the wind carry our wings. Don't try fight it just go with it. Ready?" Janner nodded but Laylah hesitated then said, "Alright."
"You'll be alright." Artham said while holding out his hand. Laylah looked at him then held his hand. "On three. One…two…three!" They all jumped off and soon the wind was in their faces as it carried their wings.
"Laylah you can open your eyes now." Artham said. Laylah slowly opened her eyes and saw the trees speeding below her. She was doing never thought she would be able to do it again but here she was in the sky. She haven't even noticed that she let go of Artham's hand. "I…I'm FLYING!" Laylah exclaimed, "I don't think I've ever felt so alive!"
"See you're getting it! How about you Janner?"
Janner howled with excitement. "This is awesome!" Kalmar exclaimed.
Then Artham taught them how to turn and go up and down and soon they caught up with the dragons. It was only a few minutes later when they started to see Anniera. They soon landed at the beach, well Laylah dropped onto her feet then her rear end and Janner slid onto the beach. "That was fun!" Kalmar said after getting off of Janner.
Everyone got off of the dragons and thanked them for their help before returning to the sky. A strange light came from Janner and everyone was confused as the light surrounded him. Once the light was gone the creature looked smaller and stood on two legs and wore a white shirt and black pants. "Wow that was weird." Then the creature covered his mouth. "Janner?" Kalmar asked.
"Yeah?"
Soon Kalmar ran to him and gave him a big hug. "You act like you haven't been riding on my back for the past thirty minutes."
"I missed your hugs." Janner smiled and hugged Kalmar.
"Hey, got any room for me?" Leeli asked.
"Of course I do!" Janner said while bringing her into the hug. Nia and Esben came and gave their children a hug. "We're so proud of you three." Nia said.
"Uh, Janner how come you could talk now but now earlier?" Leeli asked.
"Actually some Darkstoners can talk and some can't." Amrah said. "But how he wasn't able to talk before until now I don't know." Then everyone walked on a trail that lead to the nearest town next to a cliff. Finally they were home.
Author's note:
