"Bella!" A voice above her sounded rushed and panicked. "What are you doing out here all by yourself?" The voice sounded frantic but smooth and alluring at the same time.
It took her a few tries before she was able to open her eyes, she felt disoriented. The sky above her wasn't dark and black anymore it was clear and bright blue. The trees weren't dark anymore, they were a luscious dark green and looked rather peaceful. Looking around she noticed the sun shining brightly in the corner of her eye, making her having to squint in order to see properly. Suddenly the bright sunlight was gone and a shadowy figure was looming over her with outstretched hands, it took her a few seconds to focus but it was Edward's beautiful face. His eyes no longer dark and cold but golden and warm.
"Edward!" She exclaimed happily as she sprung up into his arms, he didn't feel as cold as he usually did. But she realised she felt colder than she had ever done before, her arms were filled with goosebumps and she had the faint and distinctive feeling she wet even though she could see her clothes and hair were dry as she studied herself before looking back at him.
"What's going on?" She said, her voice no longer hoarse like it had been before. "I don't understand."
"I'm sorry Bella, I shouldn't have left like that." He said with sadness plastered all over his face, "But I'm here now and I promise that everything will be okay again."
"How can everything be okay again, when you left just like that after saying what you said."
"What did I say?"
"You don't love me." He almost whimpered as the words left her lips.
"I'll make it up to you." He said with a determined voice, grasping her face between his hands. She leaned into his palm and frowned when it felt warm, she wiggled her nose when she felt like something was sliding, dripping over it but when she touched it there was nothing there.
"Bella-" He started with a sad look on his face as realisation hit hers, her eyes almost filled with horror.
"No..," she breathed out as she took a step back looking around at the forest. "What the hell is going on?"
"Nothing, Bella I-" He took a deep breath and clenched his hands in his hair, "I made a grave mistake, what I did was unforgivable but I'm hoping that you will find it in your heart to let me try and make it up to you."
"No." She said as she felt harsh drops of rain fall onto her face even though she was standing upright and sky above was bright blue.
"Bella…?"
"No!" She cried as she rubbed her hands over her dry face. She could still feel the raindrops hitting her face, she could still feel shivers making their way through her body whilst the warm sun above her hit her face.
She breathed harshly and looked at the perfect green forest around her, she wanted to scream in frustration. It was too perfect, the trees all looked the same.
"This is all in my head, isn't it?" Her eyes wide and her face full of pain, her voice full of defeat. Her hands went to her chest as if she wanted to take her heart in her hands, to protect it from whatever was to come.
He smiled at her sadly and nodded, "Of course it is."
"Bella…..!"
She shivered as she looked at his golden eyes, they had been black when he had left her. "So none of this is real."
"No, this exact moment isn't." He said. "But," He started as she closed her eyes in pain and desperation. "You'll still have your memories. "
"But this version of you isn't real. The real version of you doesn't love me." She cried sadly. Her head felt light but her chest felt heavy.
"I'm real to you aren't I?" He said with a sad smile.
"Of course you are." She whimpered. "That's the problem isn't it, I apparently can't distinguish the difference between memories and dreams anymore."
"Then I'm real." He said warmly as he took a few steps towards her, he raised his hand and ghosted his fingers over her face, never actually touching her.
"I'll be waiting for you, in your dreams." He muttered.
"Come on…shit!"
"But you're not real. None of this is." She whimpered. "I've been making all of this up in my dream because reality is just too painful. Not being loved by you, hurts more than anything I've ever been through." The panic in her chest felt sharp.
He sighed and took a step back again, "It's time for you to wake up now." He said as he turned blurry and vague in front of her eyes. He seemed to be looking around at something she couldn't see.
"Open your eyes Bella."
She woke up with a loud and painful gasp.
"Open your eyes for me Bella." A rough voice above her commanded as she was hoisted up into the air, the only thing she could see was the dark sky and the rain which was still making its way down onto her face. "I can't feel the rain." She muttered as her head rolled around seemingly in thin air until it fell against a warm, wet chest. She hadn't even realised her eyes had closed again when the voice rang out again. She could feel two arms under her, one against her back and the other under her legs. Her chest was heaving.
"Don't close your eyes yet." He sounded out of breath. "You're way too cold."
"You're warm." She muttered quietly. The voice chuckled, "I guess I am."
"I'm cold." She whispered.
"I know Bella, we'll get you warm soon enough. Just try to not fall asleep again. I don't know how long you've been out there and my medical knowledge is awful."
"I don't know either." She said sadly and forlorn.
"What do you mean?"
"I had a really nice dream." She said absentmindedly as her eyes closed again but this time against her will. "I don't-"
"Bella!" She heard again, but she couldn't focus on the voice anymore. The darkness and quietness from the back of her mind pulled her back before she even realised it was happening.
"Why is this any of our problem?" Sam had argued when Billy had come into his house, asking for his help. "She's a human girl, why don't they ask the police for help."
"He already did but-" Billy stopped abruptly and sighed, "She's dating Edward Cullen."
"I'm sorry, what?" Sam exclaimed as he uncrossed his arms and stood up. "How have I never heard this before. Why hasn't anyone told me that one of the Cullens is dating a human girl?"
"I didn't see the harm." Billy said.
"And now there's a girl missing!" He said angrily, pushing back the angry shiver that made its way over his skin.
"I don't think he would ever hurt her, he's protected her more times than I can count on one hand Sam."
"Why do you need our help if they are so good at protecting the girl?"
"Because Bella went over to their house and everything is gone."
"What-"
"They left. Carlisle left Charlie a message that they had to leave out of the blue because of a job offer in California."
Sam huffed, "Like vampires would move to California."
"I know Sam. That's why I'm here!" Billy said, the patience in his voice long gone. "Bella left the house early in the morning, it has been dark for hours. Charlie can't reach her, he found her car in front of their empty house. The front door wasn't even locked."
"And what am I supposed to do?"
"Get the pack and go out there, search for her." He said with desperation, "Please."
"We can't just roam the city in our wolf forms, Billy."
"I think she might be in the forest." Bill started, "Her car is still in front of their house."
He sighed and rubbed his face with his hands again, "Alright." He said in a stern voice, looking at his men around him.
"Let's go." Was all he needed to say before the men surrounding him started taking off their shoes and shirts as they moved into the pouring rain, the cold not bothering them at all. He looked back once more to look at Billy and Emily under the porch, hiding from the rain before closing his eyes and letting everything around him explode until he was in his element. Until he could hear his pack in his head.
Sam cursed under his breath at first but out loud when he finally found the girl. Bella, he reminded himself, Charlie Swan's daughter. They had searched the forest in their wolf forms at first trying to find a scent that either belonged to a human or a vampire, but the heavy rainfall had washed everything away. They could only smell the dampness of the forest surrounding them.
He had made them split up, something he wasn't usually a big fan of. But the forest was vast and big and it would take days for them to search it together, time neither they nor the girl had. He had decided to walk the forest in his human form when he found a dark spot of blood on tree after hours of looking.
"Bella?" He shouted, his voice loud and commanding.
He kicked some fallen branches out of the way as he quickly made his way through the forest. "Bella!" He shouted again when he smelled the smallest trace of a human scent in the air. Hope filled his chest, he ran into several directions, scared of losing the trace when he heard a barely there whimper in the distance.
He broke out in a sprint when he finally noticed a body laying on the cold, wet ground. He crashed down on his knees and tried to look the girl over. It took him a good fifteen seconds to realise she wasn't dead. She had streaks of dirt and blood on her forehead.
"Come on… shit!" He said loudly as he saw how pale the girl looked. Her lips were slightly parted and blue, her fingers were dark red whilst the tips of her fingers were turning blue as well.
"Open your eyes Bella." He tried to say in a calm voice, he could see her eyes moving behind her closed lids. A barely there move of her eyebrows accompanied the movement.
"Open your eyes for me Bella." He said again, but louder and firmer this time. He hoisted her up into his arms the second he noticed her eyes started fluttering. Her eyes were chocolate brown but they seemed miles away. She gazed up at the sky above them, her eyes wide and unfocused. He tried his best to keep the amount of profanities going through his mind in his head, not wanting to scare the girl. He tried to look her over as he steadily walked through the cold forest, the clouds of breath leaving her lips were irregular.
"I can't feel the rain." She murmured quietly, she moved her head around as if she was looking for something before it landed against his chest. She felt even colder than he expected. He tried to look for injuries but couldn't find much apart from scrapes and cuts here and there. He didn't know much about vampire transformations, but the legends always mentioned about how excruciatingly painful they were. He shook his head and looked down at her again, noticing her eyes were fluttering close. He tightened his grip on the girl and sped up.
"Don't close your eyes yet." He grunted through his teeth, trying to control himself. He couldn't get the girl back to safety if he transformed halfway through walking her back to civilization. "You're way too cold." He added as her head lulled back against his chest.
"You're warm." She muttered quietly at him. He laughed, "I guess I am."
"I'm cold." She whispered.
"I know Bella, we'll get you warm soon enough. Just try to not fall asleep again. I don't know how long you've been out there and my medical knowledge is awful." He was trying to learn more because he wanted to be able to help his pack when they needed help, it was difficult managing.
"I don't know either." She said sadly.
"What do you mean?"
"I had a really nice dream." She added absentmindedly, like she hadn't heard him or hadn't been listening. Her eyes closed again but this time against her will as she said, "I don't-"
"Bella!" He said loudly but he feared she couldn't hear him anymore as her head tilted back and bounced against his arm as he ran as fast as he could. He kept his eyes trained on the terrain around them, not wanting to trip of stumble with a human girl in his arms. Every few seconds however his gaze drifted to the unconscious girl in his arms, she looked more peaceful in her dreams.
The forest around her flashed around her, like she was at several spots at the same time. Her head hurt, like her brain was pounding against her skull. The trees moved from dark and looming to light and airy until she was in their meadow. This time her dream was different too, she knew was dreaming this time. Like she was dropped in some sort of alternative universe portal, and was falling through time. She stumbled and tripped, landing harshly on her knees before trying to get up again. The trees and flowers were still spinning around her, she gripped her head tightly and closed her eyes. Taking deep, calculated breaths hoping to slow her mind down.
"Bella." A voice breathed against the back of her neck. "You're back."
She turned around and let out a relieved breath as the world stopped spinning around her. She smiled sadly at him and his golden eyes, "I'm dreaming again, aren't I?"
He nodded and took her hand, "I'm afraid so."
"It's different this time." She mentioned as he pulled her to the middle of the meadow, making her sit down. The tall grass reached the tips of their heads but the spot they were sitting on seemed to be flattened around them. She tried to run her hands through the long strands but her hand moved straight through them.
"It's like I'm in a bad video game."
Edward laughed, "You've never played video games before."
Bella blushed, "I know."
"What happened, you only woke up a few minutes ago." He inquired.
"I don't understand why these dreams are so vivid and life-like." She murmured as she looked at him. He looked like he did right before her birthday party.
"The brain is an amazing thing, Bella."
She rolled her eyes at him and looked around, the trees seemed to be flickering and shifting into different shapes and sizes. "I think there's something wrong with me."
"You're just exhausted, Bella." He said whilst moving a strand of hair away from her face, "You shouldn't have come after me. You're going to be sick from the rain and cold."
She looked away sheepishly, the sky was getting dark again above them. She could hear voices in the distance. Edward sighed in front of her and stood up by himself, moving away from her.
"No." She said in a small voice as his hand slipped from hers. "I don't want to wake up again."
He looked down at her with a serious look on his face, "Bella, you have to wake up again."
She bit her lip and looked at the sky, it was no longer dark blue but pure black without any stars of moon. "But so far my dreams have been better."
He was in her face the next second, making her yelp. His hands framed her face tightly, they felt warm. "Wake up!" He yelled, his voice changing into a hoarser, deeper one.
"Jesus Christ Paul, don't give the girl a fucking heart attack. Get out of the way."
"Okay then, you try if you think you can do better."
"I don't-" She said as she moved her eyes around, she couldn't move her head because of Edward's hands clutching her face. The trees, flowers and grass were gone and everything but Edward was pitch black. "I'm scared."
"Don't be." He murmured whilst fading away from her vision.
"Wake up, Bella." Another voice sad but calmer this time as her eyes sprung open abruptly. She gasped for breath and looked at the men around her, all just wearing shorts. Some weren't even wearing shoes.
"Who are you?" She asked as she met almost everyone's gaze.
"I'm Sam." The man carrying her said, she recognised his voice from before. "These are my friends. We're friends of Billy's."
She kept looking around, "Aren't you cold."
He smiled almost gently at her, "Not as cold as you are right now."
She tried to laugh but her face hurt, "I'm so cold."
"I know." He murmured, "We're almost at your dad's place."
"Try not to fall asleep again." An almost angry voice said from behind them, they hadn't stopped walking since she had woken up. How did I not notice? She wondered.
Time seemed to slowly crawl by as they kept walking at a steady pace, her head leaning against the warm arm underneath her shoulders. It had finally stopped raining and the heavy clouds were steadily moving away, leaving bright stars in their wake until eventually the bright moonlight washed over her face.
"Jesus." Someone hissed, "What happened?"
"Paul." Sam said with a direct voice.
"I fell." She croaked out curtly before adding, "Six times."
"Who falls down six times and still gets up to keep going?" Paul huffed.
"She didn't get up the last time, did she?" An unknown, sarcastic voice butted in.
"Now is not the time." Sam said, making everyone shut up around them.
"Don't mind my friends, they mean well but they-" Sam started until several loud and booming voices surrounded them as they walked out of the forest and into Charlie's backyard.
"Bella!" Charlie's voice was the loudest. "Shit! Is she okay!" He shouted as he ran towards them.
"I think so, she's been talking to us but she lost consciousness before." Sam answered. "I can carry her inside if you want to?"
"No," Charlie answered hotly, "I can carry her."
Bella felt herself being passed to her father, "Dad-" She muttered, feeling more tired then ever.
"It's okay Bells." He said as he pressed a kiss against her wet hair, "Everything is going to be okay."
She closed her eyes and fell into a dreamless sleep.
