Ariadne Jackson was far from the most usual student at Yancy Academy.
For the most part, students at Yancy were a combination of troubled teenagers and rich kids who had too much time on their hands.
It was good publicity for the school to take in the trouble students, proclaiming that they could make them better members of society.
That was, of course, a load of bullshit.
Yancy Academy was full of bullies, thieves, liars and hypocrites – and not just the students.
There were exceptions to the rule, but they were few and far between.
And then there was Ariadne Jackson.
A lurker, someone who was on the outside.
She was one of the 'troubled teenagers' or so the story behind her enrolment went.
But she didn't act like the trouble teens.
She didn't make friends; she didn't fall into cliques.
She stayed on the outside, watching silently.
But it would be foolish to mark her silence for ignorance.
She knew things, things that the other students didn't.
And her sea-green eyes frightened those who stared at them for too long.
"He's watching, you know." A whispered word in passing to a girl who had been trying to attract the attention of a specific guy.
"She's going to tattle." A whispered warning to those who planned mischievous deeds but had not chosen their comrades carefully enough.
"I'm watching." A quiet growl aimed at a bully who was about to step too far.
"Look in the teacher's lounge." A whispered word to a teacher having a bad day.
Always quiet, always watching.
Terrifying.
And then there were the other things. When she didn't use her words but her actions.
When it seemed like the air itself stood still at her fury.
Very few people had seen her at that point, and none of them would dare step out of line again.
But everyone knew the rule:
You do not cross Ariadne Jackson.
.
So, on that day…
It was only ever a matter of time before everything went wrong.
A museum trip led by two teachers in order to increase the student's enthusiasm (or other such rubbish) for history.
It was the beginning of the end.
And Ariadne knew it, even if no one else did.
