Chapter 3: The encounter
According to some beliefs, vampires are dead people who rise to suck the blood of living human beings. This undead creature is universally known to feed on the blood of the living after dark, in order to draw the life force that allows it to remain immortal, or rather not subject to old age. In many legends, the vampire also feeds on human excrement and flesh, including its own; it practices self-mastication of its flesh and clothes, as attested by several ancient treatises relating stories of shrouds found chewed. The vampire also has sharp canines (or fangs), which are used to bite their victims (traditionally on the neck and while they sleep) to drain them of their blood.
Zero sighed heavily and carefully closed the book he was reading. He had been in the school library trying to learn more about vampires and he hadn't learned much other than what he already knew. It had been a few weeks since he had started researching the existence of these creatures of the night. He sighed again and stood up to put the book back on the shelf. As he put the book down, he saw a small notebook at the back of the shelf and, driven by his curiosity, he picked it up. His eyes were drawn to the title The Origin of Vampires and Hunters.
The young man's heart sank. He opened the book carefully for fear of damaging it or blowing away the fragile pages.
Vampires are the offspring of a genetic anomaly born of man, ten thousand years ago. Added to this was a climatic change that nearly caused the extinction of humanity: this event gave rise to creatures that were sensitive to the sun, but immortal.
The newborns of these early vampires will be called pure-blooded vampires. There are four categories of vampires in the vampire universe:
Purebloods
Nobles
Normal vampires
Human vampires
Note that vampires have supernatural powers: their healing strength and skills correspond to the purity of their blood. Thus, a pure-blooded vampire has stronger powers than a noble vampire.
There are five classes of vampires, organised according to the purity of their blood:
Level A, which includes only a minority of vampires. This class is for purebloods, never tainted by a single drop of human blood. There are only eight pureblood families left, which are the K-
"The library closes in five minutes, please put your books away or come to the desk to check out the books you wish to borrow," a voice thundered through a microphone.
Zero closed the notebook, grabbed his bag and ran to the front desk to borrow the book he had started reading. He was finally going to find the truth.
He arrived at an old lady who was sitting behind a large desk and asked:
- Good morning Madam, may I borrow this book please?
The old woman readjusted her glasses and took the book that Zero had handed her. She passed a software program and said:
- That's strange. This book doesn't seem to be in our catalogue, where did you find it?
- In the shelf where the books on ancient mythologies are kept.
- I'm sorry, I won't be able to let you take it. I have to register it in our catalogue and that will take time.
He banged his fist on the table and stared at the old lady
- When can I take it?
- Tomorrow.
The silver-haired man left the room in disappointment. And to think he was finally close to the truth, now he had to wait another 24 hours. He thought for a moment and an idea came to him. Nothing was lost, he could go to the city library to see if he could find that notebook. Classes were over so he had some free time. Zero quickly went back to his dormitory to change into jeans and a t-shirt and put his bag down. After he finished, he came in from the front door of the school and kindly asked the security guard to open it for him, saying that he needed to go to the downtown library to borrow books for a presentation. The weather was still warm even though the sun was setting, but Zero shivered in his long leather coat. He shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans and walked in the direction he thought was right. Now he was wandering the streets of Tokyo without really knowing where he was going. And while he had rushed to leave the academy, he had forgotten to take his mobile phone.
He noticed that he was now on a dark street where rotten smells permeated the atmosphere. It was obvious for him to turn back to the school. An old man with a long white beard and shabby clothes approached him with a cup in his hand. He whispered "money please, for my money".
The silver-haired man took pity on the man and searched his pockets for some coins but found nothing. He had gone out without his wallet and as he had exchanged, he had left his coins in his school uniform.
- I have nothing, sorry. Zero said with a sorry look on his face. He was not used to being confronted with human misery and so it was difficult for him to feel any empathy.
The old man smiled. He ran his fingers through his beard and laughed loudly and made some incongruous noises.
Zero thought that the man had made a fool of him and became angry.
- So you won't have my blood but I will have his ... announced the man with the long beard;
Within seconds, the old man threw his cup away and leapt at the silver-haired with his mouth wide open showing vampire fangs...
With his great reflexes, the silver-haired man had time to jump back and picked up a piece of stick that was at his feet.
A vampire. I'm looking at a vampire. That's not possible, that only exists in fairy tales. He dodged a punch and rolled to the side to get as far away from his enemy as possible.
The questions will come later, now I have to get rid of this old fool, Zero thought.
- Go ahead and approach, taunting Zero. He pointed his staff at the vampire.
- Whatever you say, you pretentious bastard.
Zero parried the claw with his staff and kneed the old man. The man with the long beard fell to his knees and writhed in pain as he clutched his stomach.
- I have to admit I underestimated you, you human, now that the real stuff is starting.
The vampire ripped off his shirt, Zero looked down at the bite marks on the old man's chest.
- In vampire society only the strongest have the right to live. Hypocrisy, backstabbing, and murder are the norm. To hope to live you either get killed or you align yourself with the strongest and become a slave to those damned pure bloods.
Pure blood?
Zero didn't see the blow coming and took it in the face and it propelled him into a pile of rubbish behind him. He didn't have time to open his eyes to see the damage and took another big blow to the cheek. And so the blows came one after another. Zero could feel his strength ebbing away. He was aching and exhausted. But he would not give up, not like this, not here, not against this vampire and without saying goodbye to his father ... He opened his eyes abruptly but his whole world around him was red. The silver haired man was seized with a thirst, he wanted to drink but not just any drink.
Blood.
He wanted blood.
He saw the old man's face break down in fear. The old man got up from Zero to run away but the silver man appeared in front of him. The man with the white beard took a step back.
- I'm sorry oh you great master! he begged in fear.
Zero slowly walked towards the old man, the slow pace of his steps was agony for the old man. He had no way out. When Zero stepped in front of the frightened vampire he grabbed his head and smashed it. Flesh splattered on him. A spot of blood came to rest on his lips and Zero instinctively licked it off. He was disgusted by it, for it was a
- Unfortunate vampire of the E class.
Master Kiryu
Those voices again.
Master Kiryu please come-back to us!
The silver-haired man was seized by violent headaches. It was as if his soul was going to come out of him. He could hardly breathe and then suddenly his whole world collapsed around him and everything went black.
Footsteps echoed nearby until they got louder and louder before they stopped.
- Oh no, we were too late Master Takuma. said a young woman with short pink hair.
The blonde looked at the macabre before him. There was detritus of flesh and blood along the street.
- Seki, you take care of cleaning up the crime scene. I'll take care of Zero.
- Yes, sir.
Takuma walked over to Zero's prone body and made sure that the silver man's wounds were only minor and then carried him in his arms before disappearing into the darkness of the night.
