Chapter 8 : The new teacher
Life went on at the academy. Zero had resigned himself to the idea that he simply had to coexist with these creatures of the night, although he was always on his guard.
The bell rang to signal the end of the lesson. As usual, Zero went to help Yuki 'protect' the vampires from the screams of the students. When he'd finished, he headed for the room, ignoring the students around him. He was walking down the long, dark corridor that led to his lair when he stopped and saw that the door to the principal's office was slightly ajar. What's more, he could hear deep voices coming from the room and he recognised a voice that sounded very familiar.
"It can't be", thought the silver-haired young man.
Zero ran to the door, opened it suddenly and immediately recognised the boy with the light brown hair and eyes.
What are you doing here?" asked Zero, who stepped in front of the man and now faced him.
The young man smiled at the silver-haired boy.
- I'm your new teacher, congratulations," he said, opening his arms wide to welcome Zero.
The silver-haired boy shook his head and looked away to see the headmaster sitting behind him in his office.
- What's this all about? Why is my cousin doing a placement at your school today?
Kaien Cross smiled and replied
- Kaito Tamakiya proved himself at the job interview and seems to have good teaching skills to be a teacher in my school.
Zero rolled his eyes, this was another lie they wanted him to swallow.
- So, my dear cousin Zero yagari, you tell your father Tôga Yagari Ironisa Kaito.
Zero turned to meet the mocking gaze of his arrogant cousin. Why had his life worsened since he'd entered this academy, he wondered. What made Kaito want to work here? Especially as he had never been interested in teaching.
- Can you please come and introduce me to the academy instead of thinking about losing your hair? Kaito asked casually.
Zero snapped out of his thoughts and turned his attention to his cousin. He looked at him for a few minutes, then walked in front of him and asked him to follow. Kaito followed him and when they were out of the room, Kaito followed Zero down the long corridor. The new teacher who was walking behind Zero suddenly stopped when the young silver-haired man stopped.
Zero turned to look at his cousin
- Now are you going to tell me why you're a teacher here?
The dark-haired man sighed heavily
- I found a vocation for teaching, that's why I'm a teacher at this academy.
The silver-haired boy rolled his eyes and moved closer to his cousin until his breath brushed the boy's skin.
- So you know about vampires, then? whispered Zero
Kaito nodded in response.
Then he added:
- By the way, come with me to the night class dormitory for a little introduction.
Zero thought for a few seconds. Since he had been there with Yuki, he hadn't set foot in that dormitory. He didn't want to see those vampires again. Sensing his cousin's presence, he resigned himself and followed Kaito's lead.
The journey to the dormitory was made in religious silence. For different reasons, neither man had wanted to start a conversation. So, they found themselves in front of the large solid wooden door of the Night class dormitory. Without knocking, the door slowly opened.
By reflex, Zero had put himself on guard. Every time he was near these vampires he felt unsafe. The door opened to reveal the leader of the dormitory, Kaname, and his comrades. When the silver-haired boy's gaze met the vampire's, his heart began to race for some reason.
Now zero's throat was in knots, he was so thirsty.
-Come on in, don't stay out in this winter cold," Kaname invited the two men to the doorway.
Zero waited for his cousin to enter before following him behind.
They sat down in the small living room like the last time they'd been here with Yuki. As usual, Takuma came to serve and Zero asked for tea, his cousin for coffee.
In the meantime Kaname had taken a seat in front of these two guests, while his comrades were standing behind him.
- Meet the new biochemistry placement teacher, Mr Kaito," introduced the brown-haired vampire to his classmates.
The students nodded as if to welcome him and then left the room at Kaname's request.
- How are you Zero Togari? he asked the silver-haired boy, slightly worried.
- You seem disturbed.
Without answering, Zero looked away from him and at his cousin beside him. He was beginning to regret coming here. Of course he didn't feel well. His heart was beating like crazy, his throat hurt and his head ached.
Shit.
- Zero is my beloved cousin," said Kaito, "he's not very talkative but he's ti-
He stopped.
Zero had stood up suddenly and was now staggering towards the exit.
- Where are you going, Zero? You haven't finished drinking your tea," asked Kaito.
He stood up and walked towards his cousin, holding out his hands as if to stop him in his tracks.
I've got to run.
Go away.
Run from zero!
Hurry up, they're right behind you.
The silver-haired man stretched out his hand to hold the wrist of the door.
But a weight fell on his shoulders. He could no longer feel his strength. Suddenly, his world was black.
he felt himself falling, but someone had held him back.
They were slightly muscular arms. The smell of this person was particularly familiar to him. He knew her well. But he couldn't say who it belonged to.
Anyway, he felt good in those arms.
Although his world was black, he could hear snatches of voices.
What are we going to do?
You can't let him suffer like this
Call Togari
It's Kaname!
When Zero opened his eyes, he was lying in a bed, so the room was lit by the half-light of the bedside lamp on the bedside table. He sat up, massaging his head. He looked around the room and was surprised not to be in his room. Where was he?
- Have you woken up? a voice asked.
He turned his head and saw Takuma sitting behind the desk near the front door.
Zero opened and closed his mouth.
- You blacked out when we were in the living room and I brought you here. This is my room. He said with a reassuring smile.
- Thanks for your help. Where's my cousin? He's in Kaname's office.
Once all the students had settled in, the teacher arrived at the classroom. The lesson began, and only after five poor minutes did Aido turn away from the teacher's words and tuck his bed under the table.
"Did you see how Master Kaname was devouring that young human with his eyes?" he asked his classmate sitting next to him.
The young woman with the long blonde hair rolled her eyes and turned her head to stare at the young man.
- No, he didn't. Master Kaname isn't interested in this Zero. It's just curiosity," she finished her sentence as she resumed reading her book.
Aido sighed loudly. He didn't agree with her comrade. Besides, his instinct was to be wary of this Zero.
When Zero entered the room, the two men standing there stopped their conversation to look at the newcomer.
- Can I ask what you're talking about?" asked the young silver-haired boy.
Kaname gave Kaito a quick glance as if to ask for his agreement, then stepped towards the silver-haired boy. Out of reflex, Zero stepped back as Kaname advanced towards him until his back slammed into the wall.
- Now you can't go anywhere.
Zero looked behind Kaname's shoulder to ask his cousin for help, but his cousin didn't seem concerned. Just like a few hours ago, his heart was beginning to beat very, very fast. His throat was so sore and ... thirsty. Kaname was so close to him that he could hear his gentle breathing. The dark-haired man began to unbutton the top of his shirt, revealing his neck. He stared intently at Zero and said:
- What do you feel?
Zero was lost. What did he mean by feel? He had no idea.
- Noth.. Nothing," he replied, at a loss for words.
Kaname, who hadn't looked away from the silver-haired boy, brought his face so close to his that he could breathe in Zero's breath. The silver-haired boy was as if paralysed and hypnotised by the brown-haired man's gaze. But this wasn't the first time this had happened. Why did he feel he knew him? It wasn't the first time Kaname had looked at him. He didn't feel embarrassed, surprised or self-conscious. He knew deep down that the vampire wasn't going to hurt him. But sympathising with him was out of the question.
- Are you done looking at me like that?" asked Zéro.
Kaname gave a mischievous smile and turned back to Kaito, who had not stopped looking at them.
- Everything's fine for now
- How many days do you think this will last? Kaito asked, his voice sounding slightly worried.
The young man with the brown hair buttoned up his shirt and sat down behind his desk.
- It all depends on the circumstances.
Zero, who was leaning against the wall, couldn't make out what they were saying, but he knew they were talking about him.
