The Winchesters drove into the town, Jo, Ellen, and Cas in the truck behind them. It seemed like an abandoned ghost town, with not a single person in sight. Both brothers held their phones out for cell reception.
"You getting a signal?" Sam wondered.
"No, nothing. Nice and spooky."
They stopped, and Dean stuck his hand out the window to wave the others up beside him.
"Place seem a little empty to you?" Ellen asked from the driver's seat of the truck.
"We're gonna go check out the PD. You guys stay here, see if you can find anybody." Dean told her before driving away.
Milly sat in the back, squeezing her stuffed elephant close to her as she looked out the window. She decided to name it Frodo, after the main protagonist in the book she and Sam had been reading together, The Fellowship of the Ring.
This was just like that in her mind. Sam was Frodo and the ring which they had to keep away from Lucifer, or Sauron so he didn't have too much power. They were only on the fourth chapter so she didn't know how it ended yet, but she hoped it had a happy ending. She hoped they both would have a happy ending.
Milly gripped the demon-killing knife Sam gave her tightly in her hand as they walked down the street. The others wielded shotguns too big for her to use so she was given the knife to defend herself if she needed it. They had checked out the police station, and just like the rest of the town, the station was empty, not a single person left. When they met back up with Ellen and Jo, they found out Castiel had disappeared after mentioning something about reapers.
As they walked down the street, there was something about the place that sent chills down Milly's spine. She didn't need to be smart to know something bad was about to happen. It was in the air, weighing her down. It also felt like they weren't alone. There wasn't anyone in sight, but it felt like eyes were watching from hiding places everywhere.
"There you are." A voice called out behind them, causing the group to whip around, aiming their guns toward a woman, standing in the street by herself.
"Meg." Shouted Sam, and Milly clutched the demon knife, trying to prepare herself for a fight. She knew this particular demon was very bad news.
"Shouldn't have come here, boys."
"Hell, I could say the same thing for you," Dean replied, stepping past Milly and aiming the colt at Meg.
"Didn't come here alone, Deano."
All of a sudden the puddle by Meg's foot splashed like something stepped in it and they heard growling coming from nothing.
"Hellhounds."
"Yeah, Dean. Your favorite. Come on, boys, my father wants to see you."
"I think we'll pass, thanks."
"Your call. You can make this easy or you can make it really, really hard."
"When have you known us to ever make anything easy?" Dean asked, and the others began to spread out like they were preparing to fight.
Milly noticed Meg eyeing Sam who was standing by himself towards the back of the group and she suddenly realized what was about to happen. Her brain shoved away the debilitating fear that sprang up into the back of her mind and she remembered what she came here to do. Keep them safe.
Everything after seemed to occur in slow motion as she took off running in his direction, cutting behind Dean and in between Jo and Ellen. When Meg appeared in front of Sam, Milly threw him out of the way just in time Meg grabbed her instead, an arm around her neck. Milly tried to stab her with the knife but knew it was pointless from her position so she tossed the knife towards Sam's feet just before she and Meg disappeared.
"NO!" Dean shouted, running towards where Sam scrambled up off the ground in shock.
"She took Milly." Sam gasped, looking at his brother in panic just before they heard the growling of the hellhounds around them.
Milly opened her eyes and winced at the bright flames surrounding her. She slowly got to her feet, her eyes beginning to adjust. Her heart dropped to her stomach when she realized she was surrounded by a ring of fire. A dark figure suddenly appeared from the back of the room slowly walking closer. As it walked closer, the light of the flames revealed their face ever so slightly and Milly knew right away it had to be Lucifer.
He stood in front of the ring and watched her. She knew he could tell she was scared. It was written on his face like he was basking in it.
"You're Lucifer…"
"I am, yes."
"What is this?" she asked, referring to the ring of fire surrounding her.
"You like this? A very old trick in my book. You're standing on the symbol of Chaos, the only thing that can trap your kind."
Milly looked down at her feet where she stood in the center of an 8 pointed star.
"Amelia Winchester…" He sighed, walking around her.
"Daughter of Dean Winchester and the mighty Athena."
The mention of her mother sent her heart plummeting to her stomach.
"H-how do you know that?"
"That little beacon you sent out before you were warded against angels? People talk. And I always get the information I need one way or another."
She looked around the room for a way out as subtly as she could.
"You know, I used to know your Mommy."
Milly froze, turning to look at him.
"You did?"
"Oh yeah, I heard she's on the run from Zeus. Funny how that happens isn't it? One day you're Dad's favorite, the next you're dead to him."
Milly didn't respond, she just stared at him.
"Anyways, I know where she is."
"She's alive?"
"Mmm you bet, I've got eyes everywhere. I'll tell you where she is, I just need one itty bitty thing from you." He said, stopping directly in front of her.
"Like what?"
"You help me get to Sam."
Milly swallowed hard, her heartbeat increasing.
"Listen, Milly, can I call you Milly? I'm going to find him eventually, I just am. But with your help, I can help you and your family. See, if you give me Sam, not only will I tell you where your mother is, I'll spare Dean's life and keep Sam safe. That's a pretty good deal isn't it?"
"You wouldn't hurt them?"
"They will not experience any hurt from my hands. Swear to Dad." He smirked, holding his hands up.
Milly didn't know what to do. She never really knew what to do. It was always Dean making the decisions and giving the orders.
What would Dean do?
He would never ever help Lucifer. Even if it cost him his life.
To the archangel's surprise, Milly shook her head. He sighed and began walking around her again.
"Now Milly, think this through. You're the daughter of Athena, I know you know how to think."
"Yeah, I think you should go back to hell."
Lucifer laughed and nodded, pointing to the girl.
"Alright, well, maybe there's more of Daddy in there than I first expected."
"And that is what is going to get you killed." He added, causing her heart to beat so hard in her chest, she felt it in her ears.
"Your human side. That is your weakness, you realize that? You'll never reach your full potential hanging around them."
"You don't know anything about me."
"Maybe not, but I know your family. Your real family. Some say their power once rivaled my own family's." He shrugged.
"I'm not helping you possess Sam."
"Gotta hand it to 'em, they sure know how to find the loyal ones," he growled in annoyance.
He stood so that he was looking her dead in the eye, sending shivers down her spine despite the heat of the flames.
"Fine, fine, but let me tell you something Milly, when I find Sam, and I will find him, I will kill Dean, Castiel, you, and everyone who stands in my way and it will be all because of you."
And with that he was gone, leaving her alone in the room. Milly let out the breath she didn't realize she was holding and tears welled up in her eyes. They were all out there still, and he was going to kill them.
Because of her.
She began breathing faster and faster, looking around for a way out. She had to get past the fire first.
Lucifer flung Dean into a tree and turned to look at Sam, the wound from the colt healing in seconds.
"Don't feel too bad, Sam. There's only five things in all of creation that that gun can't kill, and I just happen to be one of them. But if you give me a minute, I'm almost done."
As Lucifer continued to shovel dirt, Sam rushed over to Dean and checked his pulse.
"You know, I don't suppose you'd just say yes here and now? End this whole tiresome discussion? That's crazy, right?" Lucifer asked, leaning on the shovel and Sam stood up to face him.
"It's never gonna happen!"
"Oh, I don't know, Sam." He continued, shoveling some more.
"I think it will. I think it'll happen soon. Within six months. And I think it'll happen in Detroit."
"Where is Milly?" Sam demanded.
"Oh, your little demigod niece? She's still alive if that's what you're asking. For now. Or maybe I'll give ol' Zeusy a call and let him handle it."
"You listen to me, you son of a bitch. I'm gonna kill you myself, you understand me? I'm going to rip your heart out!" He roared.
"That's good, Sam. You keep fanning that fire in your belly. All that pent-up rage. I'm gonna need it."
Sam took a deep breath and looked around at the men just standing around, doing nothing.
"What did you do? What did you do to this town?"
"Oh, I was very generous with this town. One demon for every able-bodied man."
"And the rest of them?"
"In there," Lucifer replied, gesturing to the dirt he was shoveling.
"I know, it's awful, but these horsemen are so demanding. So it was women and children first. I know what you must think of me, Sam. But I have to do this. I have to. You of all people should understand."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I was a son. A brother, like you, a younger brother, and I had an older brother who I loved. Idolized, in fact. And one day I went to him and I begged him to stand with me, and Michael—Michael turned on me. Called me a freak. A monster. And then he beat me down. All because I was different. Because I had a mind of my own. Tell me something, Sam. Any of this sound familiar? Anyway. You'll have to excuse me. Midnight is calling and I have a ritual to finish. Don't go anywhere. Not that you could if you would."
Sam ran back over to Dean who began to stir and Lucifer began the sacrifice of the demons he created while the brothers watched in horror.
"She's alive," Sam whispered to Dean.
"What?"
"Milly. He's holding her somewhere."
Dean was about to respond when Cas appeared behind them having just escaped himself and took them away.
Milly had been trying to use her powers to move things outside of the ring but hadn't been successful for what felt like hours. She cried out in frustration, wiping her tear-stained cheeks with her jacket sleeves.
She never should have come here. She felt so stupid to believe she could handle this. Bobby was right about her being just a kid. All she could do was make things float. It was practically useless.
Useless.
Milly didn't like that word. If something didn't have use, then why should it even exist? She felt like that word described her pretty well though. The one thing she had that made her feel the tiniest bit useful, she couldn't even do. It left her with nothing. Now everyone she cared about was in danger because of it. Her only job was to keep them safe and she might've just utterly failed.
Milly let out another frustrated cry, bringing her hands up to the sides of her head and she breathed in and out rapidly.
Sam and Dean wouldn't give up. Don't give up.
The girl wiped her cheeks again and held her hands out, reaching towards a large wooden plank propped up against the wall beside her.
Nothing.
She squeezed her eyes shut and cleared her mind like she did when lifting the tree trunk all those weeks ago. After a few seconds, she opened her eyes and pushed as hard as she possibly could. Suddenly the bottom of the plank skidded back just an inch or two to where it was no longer leaning against the wall but standing straight up.
"C'mon c'mon." She begged just before it teetered forward and fell over the fire, breaking the ring. She didn't give herself time to celebrate before she leaped across it and darted for the door.
She didn't know where she was, nor where the others were. She didn't even know if they were still alive. Everything was dead silent as she ran out of the building she was kept in and into the empty street.
"Dean?" she called, her voice breaking.
"Sam?... Dean?"
Milly continued to run down the road towards where she thought they had parked the car earlier but really couldn't remember. It seemed like she was the only one left in the entire town. Her legs began to slow as the exhaustion pulled her down, but she refused to let it take over. Tears welled up in Milly's eyes, preventing her from seeing clearly as she ran. She'd never been so terrified in her life.
She wanted to go home.
She wanted Sam.
She wanted her Dad.
"Daddy!" She cried out in desperation, not even realizing what she'd said. Her mind was consumed by the fear the worst had happened to them and she was all alone.
Sam and Dean searched the streets, calling Milly's name, hoping to hear her somewhere while Cas quickly went through all the buildings in case she wasn't able to call out for help. However, they were quickly losing hope because they weren't sure if she was even still in the town and they were running out of time.
They were not going to lose her too.
"Daddy!"
The second Dean heard Milly's faint voice in the distance, his blood ran cold.
"Milly?" He shouted back, and they took off running toward where he heard her voice.
Dean turned the street corner and saw her little blonde head in the distance, looking around.
"Milly!"
She whipped around and the moment she spotted him, she took off running in his direction. She wasn't even sure he was real until her body collided with his. He knelt down and wrapped his arms around her tightly, sighing in relief that she was okay.
"I thought I lost you, kid."
"It was him, he was here." She cried, burying her face in his shoulder. The feeling of safety that now surrounded her was an instant relief to the aching in her chest.
"We know, but we gotta get out of here now," Sam told her just as Cas appeared beside them, and Dean stood up with Milly still in his arms.
"Let's go."
Cas touched Sam and Dean's foreheads and they all disappeared from the street as though they were never even there.
