DISCLAIMER: I OWN NOTHING
NOTE: So in this chapter Fenris is back. We also see some Leto and Marian drama. hope you guys like and please review.
It had been almost a week since Fenris left. Leto had become more and more upset and was barely speaking to Marian or anyone else and had taken to behaving badly or even snapping at Marian at certain times. Marian had disciplined him right away and he had stopped before starting once more. She knew he was upset that Fenris had left and he had had to be separated from Anders after his last comment. Marian had had to avoid him for a day or so as well which had served to do nothing except fuel his anger and they had gotten into another fight which only served to frustrate her more.
On the morning before the attack was supposed to happen, Marian's patience had run out and apparently Leto's had as well because while Marian had been trying to plan out their strategy Leto had taken to setting the curtains on fire again. Quickly distinguishing the flame and replacing them, she silently thanked Bodhan for making her get a few extras after the last fire lesson. After putting them up she turned and asked.
"Why did you do that Leto. There was no need."
He glared at her silently before attempting to go upstairs only to stop when Marian took his hand. Fuming at her silently for a moment he glared at her before beginning to yell and Marian felt tears well in her eyes at his words.
"ITS ALL YOUR FAULT! FATHER LEFT BECAUSE OF YOU!"
She shook her head minutely in denial before attempting to calm him down.
"Your father left to take care of important matters, he is coming back Leto. I promise you."
He wrenched his hand away from her angrily before yelling louder and Marian wasn't surprised to see her friends behind her. There mouths were open in shock as they had never seen Leto upset or ever do or say anything mean to his mother.
"YOU NEVER TOLD HIM ABOUT ME! DIDN'T YOU LOVE ME? DIDN'T YOU LOVE FATHER? IF YOU HAD TOLD HIM ABOUT ME HE WOULDN'T HAVE LEFT US MOTHER!"
Marian was silent for a long moment. She couldn't deny it. She had thought the same thing many times. She had been so sure that her decision was right and while she still did she often wondered if everything was her fault. Including his leaving the first time before Leto was even born. The room was silent with his accusation and finally Leto whispered.
"I hate you."
Marian felt a lone tear slide down her check before she heard a quiet but firm voice say.
"Do not speak to your mother like that."
Turning in shock she saw Fenris. He was silent in his anger but met her gaze steadily. Leto had said nothing in response to his father and finally walked over to Fenris glaring at him as well and saying nothing before looking at Marian again. After a long moment of silence Fenris grabbed Marian's arm roughly and said.
"We need to talk."
Before practically dragging her upstairs. He knew that they would watch Leto and this was confirmed when Varric offered to tell him the story of how Hawke and the group battled a dragon. As angry as he was with his mother, he couldn't resist and Varric knew it and sure enough within minutes he was occupied and didn't even notice the rest of the groups eyes were directed at the stairs.
Slamming the door hard enough to break it Fenris finally released her and she stood silently waiting for him to speak. He said nothing for a moment breathing heavily before he turned and slammed a gauntleted hand on her desk effectively shattering the wood and Marian still remained silent. She hadn't even flinched. Spinning around he placed both hands on her table shaking his head before meeting her gaze. Finally he spoke.
"How the hell could you do this Marian?"
She didn't need to ask what he meant. She knew. Taking a deep breath she said softly.
"I thought it was for the best."
His markings flared for a moment until he regained his calm and this time his voice was raised.
"The best for him or you? It was NOT the best for me Hawke to never know I fathered a child."
She attempted to turn only to have his arm shoot out and stop her.
"Do not turn from me. Answer me."
She remained silent for a moment before shaking her head as a tear fell from her eye.
"It was what was best for you," pausing she whispered so softly he leaned in to hear it, "and him."
Instantly his markings flared and she felt the hot burn against her skin and couldn't fight the flinch as she had before. Bringing his face as close to hers as he could he began screaming not caring if he was scaring her.
"WHAT WAS BEST FOR ME! HIM! YOU'VE TAKEN AWAY MY RIGHT TO KNOW MY SON. I DIDN'T SEE HIM BORN. HAVE NO MEMORY OF HIS FIRST YEARS. NOT HIS FIRST LAUGH, CRY. I HAVE NOTHING OF HIS FIRST STEPS OF LIFE MARIAN! AFTER WHAT DENARIOUS DID TO ME, ROBBING ME OF ALL OF MY MEMORIES HOW DARE YOU TRY TO TAKE THE NEW ONES I DESERVE? I HAD A RIGHT TO KNOW HIM! HE'S MY SON!"
Shaking her he noticed that tears were flowing freely down her cheeks now and for the first time since he'd known her he didn't want to wipe them away. His fury was so that he couldn't focus on anything else. She noticed as well and his grip was tightening as his anger grew. Raising her gaze to his she spoke softly but surely.
"Do you remember what you said to me that night?"
Frowning, his markings receded for a moment and she let out a shallow breath. Looking at her in confusion he demanded.
"What does that have to do with this?"
She sighed before saying.
"Fenris...it has everything to with this."
Disbelief colored his face and was quickly replaced with fury and Marian knew instantly that he'd misunderstood her.
"You kept my son from me because I left you?"
She shook her head in denial before telling him.
"I kept Leto from you because you made it very clear that night why we couldn't be together..."
"Our relationship makes no difference Marian!"
He shouted only to have her shout right back.
"LET ME FINISH!"
Before taking a breath and speaking calmly.
"You said you don't belong in a world of hypocrisy and death. You said that magic is a curse. A disease that kills and ruins anything it touches and those who are cursed with it will only bring more pain or do foul deeds. If not they turn to blood magic and turn on those around them. I never turned on you."
Here she finally let her sobs come freely not able to stop them anymore.
"I tried to show you magic was good. That its the person not the magic thats wrong. You said it was against everything you believe everything you are. Leto is a mage Fenris. Just as I am. I didn't want him to be ashamed of something for which he had no control. Something that he loves just as much as I do. Its in our blood, its who we are. I can't change that and neither could he. I did not tell you about him because he deserves a father that could love him completely. If you loved him would it be because your heart told you to or because he's your son and you felt you had to? I don't want you to feel obligation. I'm not forcing you or asking for anything your not ready to give. You told me magic ruined your world and you didn't belong in it. That that world was not a place for you. I didn't want you to turn your back on everything you are. I had no way of knowing if you would ever accept magic and realize its not evil."
Pausing once more she said softly.
"I didn't want you to hate Leto because he's a mage."
He said nothing and after a moment she added.
"I didn't want to force you into a world you hated. Not when..." she took a shaky breath, "Not when your life was finally starting to go right. The way you wanted it to."
He still said nothing. His body was shaking but after a long moment it stopped and his body sagged.
"I could never hate him."
He said before walking downstairs and leaving Marian alone.
and thats it I hope you all liked it and please review.
