She watched the man with the strange markings very closely. His face fell and he asked her softly.
"You don't know where you are?"
She shook her head slowly before reaching a hand to his face and touching his cheek in the barest of touches silently exploring and marveled at the electricity that seemed to stem from the mere act of touching him. It seemed in that one touch her body came alive and she momentarily lost her breath. Raising her eyes to his she was glad to see that he was effected in the same way as he let out a small shuddering breath before leaning into her touch. Hesitating for a moment she asked softly.
"What's your name?"
They could hear people talking rapidly in the background but it seemed neither was paying attention. He swallowed thickly and she could see a thousand emotions in his eyes but finally he responded just as softly.
"My name is Fenris. Your name is Marian and this is our son Leto.'"
Here he paused and reached for their son who had been bouncing excitedly since he noticed his mother wake but hadn't moved because Varric had whispered something in his ear. Seeing his father motion to him however, made him jump up and sit on the bed next to his mother where he immediately hugged her with all his might. Fenris watched as Marian's eyes held confusion, love and then sorrow and he frowned before realizing she didn't remember him either. She hugged him slowly as if she'd never met him before and Leto picked up on it right away.
"What's wrong mother? Aren't you happy to see me?"
She nodded emphatically but answered slowly.
"Of course I am. Its just…."
Turning to Fenris her eyes begged him to help and he immediately took over.
"Can you remember anything?"
He knew the answer but needed to hear her say it. When she shook her head he felt his heart plummet before turning to his son and explaining that sometimes when people were injured to the extent that his mother was they suffered a memory loss and at the moment his mother couldn't remember anything or anyone. He actually wasn't sure if that was true or not. He had no idea why Marian couldn't remember anything but that was his best guess and he knew he had to tell Leto something. He knew Leto had watched his mother when he had asked but hearing Fenris confirm it he began to cry and looking over at Marian he watched her eyes well up as well as she reached for him. He realized her memory wasn't there but the love still was. It took a long moment for her son to stop crying but when he did he pulled back and said.
"We can get mother's memory back!"
When no one responded he looked at his father who tried to nod encouragingly but found that he couldn't. They didn't know how to get her memory back or what to do. They didn't even know how she had lost her memory in the first place. He opened his mouth to speak again only to notice Carver and Gamlen had approached the bed. It turned out Gamlen had been injured saving Charade from a Templar and had been recovering in the other room. They could still see the bandage on his chest and when he leaned in to see Marian they noticed he winced in pain. He had noticed the others had looked upset with him and realized it was because he hadn't been there watching Marian as the rest had but after Fenris nodded toward his chest they fell silent with guilt. Turning his gaze back to the pair he noticed that it was Carver who spoke first.
"Do you remember me?"
Hearing movement over his shoulder he noticed Anders had been trying to force himself near the bed but Aveline and Donnic were keeping him immobile and he heard Aveline hiss.
"They are her family. They should be the ones to see her first not you. You cannot seriously be this selfish you bastard."
They didn't hear his reply but they saw her smack him on the head and hiss once more.
"You can give her a potion in a minute."
Grinning and shaking his head he turned back to Marian who was staring at him very closely. Frowning she said.
"I know that I know you. You are familiar to me, but…."
Sighing in frustration she began to explain.
"I don't know how to explain it but for the past few days, I've been awake. I couldn't move my limbs, I couldn't speak, couldn't do anything. I was trapped in my own body. But I WAS awake. I heard you speaking. All of you. I can't remember anything but from hearing you talk, I managed to put something's together. I have learned that I have a son and I knew I was a woman. I also deduced that you,"
She stopped here and pointed to Fenris.
"You are the father of my child?"
She paused for confirmation and felt silly when she remembered that he had said that only moments before but smiled anyway when he nodded indulgently.
"I think…"
She said turning back to Carver.
"Are we related? When I heard your voice, I thought of childhood. I couldn't see anything or remember but that word stuck out."
Carver sat on the bed careful not to scrape her with his armor and nodded.
"You're my older sister."
He watched her take in this information before adding.
"We have another sister but she can't be here right now."
She frowned and started to ask why, but the look on his face stopped her. She could see they didn't want to overwhelm her and honestly at the moment that's the only thing she was feeling. Over the next hour they slowly went through the rest of the group trying in vain to get her to remember something and when it finally got to Anders Fenris felt her squeeze his hand tightly to the point of pain and the hand that was still connected to her chest could feel her heartbeat racing under his fingertips. He was shocked because he realized she was afraid.
He had never known Hawke to be afraid. He saw her vulnerabilities that no one else saw, he had seen her moments of weakness, and had seen her breakdown. One thing he had not seen was her afraid. Not truly. This worried him and he ran his thumb over her hand caressing her gently trying to calm her. It didn't seem to work because as he got closer her heartbeat grew impossibly faster and he knew if she didn't calm down she would end up hurting herself worse than she already was. Holding her protectively against him he saw his son lean closer to his mother as well and bury his head in her chest. Seeing her face change from wariness to protectiveness she released one of his hands to wrap her arm protectively around her son and Fenris noticed her body radiated tension.
"I guess you don't remember me either. I'm Anders. I've been healing you for the past few days making sure that you've been alright."
She was quiet for a moment and Fenris took a deep breath to calm his anger. He hadn't moved from Marian's side once and helped as much as he could but he should have known that Anders would have tried to make himself the hero in her eyes. Hearing her speak he tuned back in.
"Thank you. I will never be able to repay you for saving my life and bringing me back to my family and friends."
Nodding, he said nothing for a long moment. It was clear he wanted to but he didn't and she was grateful. Seeing his eyes she knew that he was planning something but as she didn't know what she held her tongue refusing to speak. Finally he went to his waist and plucked out a potion saying they should have her take one and with Fenris helping her she managed to get it down without difficulty. She noticed that movement wasn't difficult but she wasn't steady. Her movements felt jerky and uncoordinated to her and it only served to anger her. What the hell had happened to her to reduce her to this? She didn't know but she did know that she wanted answers. She could feel eyes on her but ignored them in favor of her thoughts until she felt her son tug her again. Looking down into his eyes she watched his face light up in a grin and he squeezed her before laying his head on her chest.
Looking up at Fenris she gave him a shy smile and lowered her gaze back to their son. The room was quiet for a long moment until the pretty elf that had been introduced to her as Merrill spoke.
"What will we do? We still have the problem with Meredith and now Hawke is…..incapacitated?"
Bodhan and Sandal had come closer to the bed at this and smiled reassuringly and she returned the smile sorry that she couldn't remember them either. They didn't seem to mind though, simply grateful that she was awake. Others began to speak up rapidly and Marian wished she could block the noise as she began feeling a gnawing pain inside her head. Seeing her expression Fenris yelled.
"SHUT UP!"
The room instantly went silent as the group stared at him astonished. Standing up he pointed at Marian before speaking again.
"She's right there! You don't have to speak about her as if she's not! She's in pain and not one of you noticed."
Sitting back down he glanced over at Marian who looked relieved before closing her eyes for a moment. Carver noticed the exchange and said nothing turning to address the group instead.
"My sister almost killed Meredith,"
Here Marian gasped before looking at her friends in shock but Carver continued as if she hadn't spoken,
"I don't think she'll be coming to try and finish the job anytime soon and the rest of us were no where near as badly injured as my sister. I think we should all try and rest to keep our strength up."
Isabela spoke gently.
"No one is trying to overwhelm her but I think we all have to accept the fact that we need her in the battlefield. We barely escaped Meredith's wrath and it was only because Hawke was who she wanted. If they discover just how badly she was injured, they will come. You know that they would not stop now."
Ignoring her friends glares she added.
"Meredith has had just as much time to heal as Marian and she has the best healers available."
Here Varric broke in.
"Blondie is a damn fine healer raviani."
This time it was Leto who broke in.
"Mother is better. Always has been."
Seeing Anders face go puce Marian spoke.
"I think that bickering like children isn't going to solve our problems."
Thinking for a moment she said.
"So why does this Meredith want me dead and why do you need me in the battlefield?"
There was a long pause and it was Varric who finally answered. He had thought that Fenris would have but he was trying to get Leto to stop bouncing on his mother's lap.
"You're a very important person in Kirkwall."
Seeing her expression change to confusion he smiled and said.
"That's where we live. Kirkwall. In this town there's a lot of oppression and there's a lot of disasters. People kill people, people rape and plunder and hurt and murder for the fun of it. You stop those people and even stopped an invasion and kept the town from being slaughtered time and again. Meredith wants you because she's appointed herself the ruler of this place, well for all intents and purposes, and she wants to stop you because you stand for everything she's against. Like freedom, truth. The willingness to help the people that she thinks are unworthy. You help the mages that she thinks should be killed or chained down. You're the strongest mage anyone's ever known Hawke, and that is why she wants you dead."
Marian was silent for a long moment. They saw her face scrunch and knew she was thinking but finally her face smoothed out and she looked apologetically at the group before asking.
"What's a mage?"
and that's it! I hope you like it and please review. Also stick around I've got tons of surprises in store!
