DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT OWN ANYTHING IN THIS STORY
NOTE: I cannot express how sorry I am that you guys have had to wait so long for me to update. I have been working 18 hours a day and had no laptop. I was finally able to save up enough for one so I am back and I hope that you guys aren't too upset with me for taking so long. So, Marian doesn't remember what a mage is and now we will learn what's going to happen next.
The room was silent save for the clank of Carver's armor hitting the floor as he sat down heavily. Leto had stopped moving as well and simply stared at his mother astonished and for once none of her friends had anything to say. Looking at her friends Marian finally let her gaze settle on Fenris and she was astonished at the look on his face. She couldn't describe what she saw in his eyes but she was surprised to realize that she saw a flicker of disappointment and disbelief in his eyes. The disbelief didn't surprise her because the rest of her friends had that same look it was the disappointment that shocked her though she didn't know why.
Finally, Carver spoke and his voice was quiet.
"You have no memory of being a mage."
He could see annoyance flash on her face and resisted the urge to smile. Her personality was still there under the surface. She just didn't remember who she was. Pulling himself from his thoughts he saw her nod slowly but could tell she'd stopped herself from saying something. Taking a deep breath to try and get himself together he finally looked to Fenris for help only to realize that Fenris and Leto were still sitting shell shocked and hadn't spoken.
"A mage is….. well it's a person born with magic inside them and they have abilities that regular people don't."
Marian raised an eyebrow at her brother before watching him and Carver scratched his head before saying.
"My explanation is not the best here is anyone willing to help?"
Hearing that seemed to pull Leto from his thoughts and he whispered to his father.
"I don't know if this will work but can I try to help mother?"
He paused for only a moment before nodding showing Leto his trust which made his son smile before approaching his mother who was still looking skeptical. Stopping in front of her he said.
"Don't be afraid mother."
Slowly raising his hand, he closed his eyes and a second later flames erupted around his hand and Marian sat straight up eyes wide before realizing that Leto's hand was shaking and his face was scrunched. Forgetting everything else including what she was seeing she locked eyes with Fenris and began yelling frantically.
"He doesn't know how to stop!"
Realizing quickly that she was right Fenris did the first thing he thought of and reached out and held Leto's hands ignoring the singeing pain and cursing himself for being so stupid. Forcing himself to hold on and thanking the Maker that his markings hadn't reacted the way he thought they would, he realized that Leto's hand shaking was beginning to get worse and he looked pleadingly to Marian for help. Looking at her friends she saw the one that had called himself Anders looking torn and Merrill watching with wide eyes. Finally, she heard the dwarf that called himself Bodhan speak.
"Leto remember what your mother told you about magic! Close your eyes and concentrate! Think back to the library remember how you stopped?"
Closing his eyes, they watched as his whole body slowly relaxed and as suddenly as the fire started it stopped and Leto finally opened his eyes before sagging to the floor in relief. Marian quickly sat down and wrapped her arms around him before looking to Fenris concerned when she noticed his hands. Seeing him silently shake his head she kept quiet turning back to her son and pulling him closer to her only to pull back in shock when she realized something was happening to her that she couldn't explain. Hearing her son sigh in relief she noticed that he now looked perfectly fine. Looking down at her hands she looked back at her son and asked quietly.
"What just happened?"
Leto grinned and hugged her before replying.
"You healed me mother."
Frowning in confusion she looked down at her hands again before turning to her companions and asking.
"How can I have done that without realizing I was doing it or even how I did it?"
The room was silent and she realized no one had an answer which only served to frustrate her more. She had been so sure that when she woke up she would remember something about herself and her life but as before she only had more questions and no answers. Sighing softly to herself she wondered how long she would be like this but was pulled from her thoughts when she noticed Fenris still studying his hands. She felt guilt spike and wished she could heal him too but she didn't even know how she'd managed to heal their son.
Fenris studied the burns on his hands confused. Every other time something like that had happened his markings would flare. It was inevitable. This time they hadn't and that confused him. Why hadn't they reacted? Seeing Marian studying him with guilty eyes he broke their gaze and spoke and when he did he shocked the group with his clarity.
"You preach about the mages plight, about how mages are used and commit suicide because no one helps them and yet my son a mage needed help and you watched. He could have been hurt but you watched and refused to help simply because he was my flesh and blood."
Seeing Anders open his mouth to defend himself he cut him off.
"There is no reason for denying the truth."
Closing his mouth only to open it again he said,
"Merrill didn't help either."
Nodding Fenris answered.
"No, she didn't. However, as she's a blood mage I am glad she didn't. I am equally as glad that you didn't. I am merely pointing out the hypocrisy and the lies you try and get people to believe."
Merill spoke softly.
"I would have helped I just…"
Her voice broke off and she looked at Marian for understanding. Giving her a small smile to reassure her she watched the elf's face brighten.
Attempting to break the tension, Varric asked softly.
"So, do you believe us now Hawke?"
Marian looked up and nodded slowly before saying.
"I guess I have to, don't I?"
Before going silent for a long moment. After thinking for a bit, she spoke again.
"So, what can I do?"
Here she smiled hearing Carver and Varric laugh and looked over to Fenris to see the barest of smiles on his face. Hearing an older man speak she concentrated for a moment before remembering it was her uncle Gamlen.
"You wield the power of fire and ice. You're a spirit healer and from what your friends tell me you have some ability with force magic and electricity as well though you hate using electricity."
Here Anders opened his mouth to say something but got cut off by Aveline smacking him.
"I've had just about enough of you trying to start a fight. If you speak to her it had better not cause a fight."
Closing his mouth stubbornly he moved to sit on the other side of the room and Aveline offered the family a smile. Looking at her in thanks Marian turned back to Fenris before asking.
"What can Leto do?"
Fenris broke the stare and lowered his eyes to the floor before saying quietly.
"I don't know."
Confused Marian spoke again.
"But you're his father. How can you not…?"
Here she was interrupted by the dwarf that had said his name was Bodhan.
"He also wields the power of fire and ice but has not mastered control. He's very much just coming into his powers and you train him every day to make sure that he does master control. You've also trained him on the sword and staff and from what Varric says he's a natural lockpicker."
Thinking on what he said she nodded absently still glancing at Fenris confused. His gaze remained on the floor however and she knew instinctively he was upset. His body was rigid and the muscles in his jaw had begun to tick. Feeling hurt she turned away and faced the group once more before remembering what she had heard Leto say earlier when she was trapped inside herself.
Mother said she couldn't tell anyone she had a son. She said that people would hurt her friends if they knew because of mother being the Champion. The bad people who hurt her would try to hurt me she didn't want you all to get hurt protecting us.
So, that explained it then. She had lied about having a child and hidden him because she thought she was protecting Fenris and her friends, but looking at him know and feeling her heart twinge at the thought of causing him pain she wondered if she had made the right choice. Thinking back at what they had said before the fire started she said quietly.
"This Meredith won't stop at killing me, will she?"
Instantly the group began to reassure her with pretty words not wanting to upset her and she shook her head angrily before turning to Fenris.
"The truth. Please."
He lowered his gaze to their son and wrapped an arm around him before looking back at Marian and shaking his head minutely. Nodding Marian spoke once more.
"Then I guess you guys are going to have to train me until I get my memory back."
And that's it. I apologize so much for how long it took and I hope you guys like it. A lot of surprises are in store for the next chapter.
