Chapter 26: Stohess
It was dawn when Petra Ral started to get dress. The night she had spent with Gohan was rather lousy , though the Monkey Boy had made it up with his tail. Petra blushed whenever she thought about it. Gohan Son was still snoring on the bed,naked ,not a good sight if someone else enter the room. When Petra finished taking on her clothes ,she proceed to take a last look at the mirror before going to the door .
'It would be better if you lose me rather than I lose you.'She thought about what Gohan had said to her as she turned the nob. "Likewise."
"When?" Ingham words crept through Nile Dowk spine like a slithering snake.
"By tomorrow ,sir, Jaeger and Son will arrive at Stohess in the Afternoon." Nile tried to maintain compose as he answered the Beta.
"I'm not really care about the Jaeger boy ." Ingham Reply before removing his glasses. "However,if Gohan decides to vouch for that peasant, well, I hope we can make arrangement." He put on his glasses.
"I don't know if I can do that. The paper works,the cost…" Nile stuttered.
"Monetary problem is not a part of Lady Winters' vocabulary." Ingham patted on Nile's shoulder. "You know best!"
"I'm acknowledged. I will do what I can to insure the boy's cooporation ." Said Nile.
"He'll cooperate . As soon as he see the Lady,he'll be more than happy to join." For the first time,Nile Dowk saw a little bit of light in the Beta's face.
"Why would he be like that." Nile's reply startled Ingham as he finally realizes he had slipped some information.
"It's beyond your paycheck." Ingham corrected himself,he was too exited . "It's not what we pay you for."
'Beyond what you don't kill me for,you mean?' Lady Winters was the only person who managed to build her own paramilitary force equipped with god-knows-what weapons she invented. It would be no surprise if she abled to stage a coup to overthrow the king and make herself queen when she wanted to. "I'll see what I can do, Mr Ingham."
"It's a pleasure doing business with you."Ingham offered his hand which Nile shook before his departure. "Your money will soon arrive."
Ingham eyed the Commander as he was walking away from the alley. When the Top Beta ensured that Nile was gone,he leaned to a wall and breathed heavily.
'That was too close ,John. What's wrong with you,John? Nobody supposed to know that the Lady and Gohan knew eachother, you stupid son of a bitch.' He knew he should not blame himself to much. He was exited to know that the Champion was coming home. He just wanted his family avenged. He wanted to go home where he was fleeing from for so long since he was a kid . 'He'll go back and kill that monster. He will take us home.'
Gohan was no stranger to pain, but those pains were always quickly resolved with a quick toss of a senzu bean .Unfortunately ,this strange new world did not have any senzus for Gohan,so it was a torture for Gohan to walk up the stairs with a crutch supporting him. It would be greater if Gohan was able to carry two crutches ,but his right arm was casted in a splint so it was imposible.
Gohan struggled himself through the steps and stopped when he saw the Special Operation Squad sitting at a table. He proceeded to settle himself on a chair with Gunther and Petra help while resting his hand on the crutch.
"Sorry,Gohan. I should've helped you."Said Petra.
"So, I suppose that we are waiting for someone." Said Gohan.
"Yes ,Erwin's coming." Replied Levi.
"Captain, can I may ask why?" Oulo asked.
As an answer for the squad ,footsteps were heard as a group of people walked on the stairs. The footstep echoed through the walls before Commander Erwin Smith, Jean , Mikasa and Armin emerged.
"Jean,Mikasa, Armin!" Yelped Eren as he saw his old friend.
"Okay, I understand why Armin and Mikasa are here,but what with you?" Gohan asked Jean.
"Our plan involves him."Answered Erwin, he laid down a map to the table,he observed the other three settled themselves on the chairs before sat down himself. "We only have this one last chance to apprehend the Titan collaborator in our midst."
"Titan?" Puzzled Petra.
"Collaborator?" Added Oulo.
"Quiet!"Ordered Levi.
"Comrades ,focus on the map." Ordered Erwin. "Just by tomorrow afternoon ,we'll move on to Stohess District,Wall Sina. This is our only chance, since once we enter the interior,the Military Police will put Eren to custody. So our priority is to strike fast and flush the enemy out."
Erwin pointed on the map where there was a tunnel.
"You'll lure the target to this underground tunnel. If we can lure her to the lower levels, given the tunnel size and structural integrity ,even when the titan transform, we can still immobilize her." Said Erwin . "But should the target transform before that, Eren, we'll need your help."
"Yes,sir." Complied Eren. "As for the target, are we sure that she is in Stohess?"
"Correct. She's currently serving in the Military Police." Answer Erwin.
'Military Police,that's weird.' Gohan began to align the datas.
"The Military Police?"
"It was Armin Alert who came up with that conclusion."Said Erwin "He also suggested that the target has killed the captured Titan. She may be a cadet from the 104th the same as you."
Military Police. Familiar ki. 104 th trainee corps. Female. Top ten. Gohan had figured it out.
"That makes sense." Commented Petra.
"What?"Asked Eren.
The Commander stared at the girl as if he was asking something.
"Eren ,Gunther, Oulo , you guys remember the treehouse?"Asked Petra.
"The flare?" Asked Gunther.
"Gunther was about to pop a flare just before Eld stopped him." Added Oulo.
"That because Eld knew Levi can sense energy,just …. Like Gohan."Added Eren,the boy looked at his brother figure.
"And me." Added Mikasa "Gohan's teaching pays off."
Gohan looked to Mikasa with pride, he had successfully trained someone.
"Excuse me, energy sensing?" Erwin got curious.
"Yeah ,what is that?" Added Jean.
"One of Gohan's training result, I'll explain later." Answered Levi.
"I sensed the shooter energy . I didn't recognised it to be your nor scout's to begin with. But it rather familiar, I don't know for sure whose." Said Gohan . "Eld deduced it to be the Female Titan's energy and that the Titan must be someone I know. The 104 th."
"And I'm positive that you know Annie Leonheart." Concluded Erwin.
"Wait,what?" Reacted Eren
"It could be her." Commented Gohan.
"GOOHANN!"
"Eren, Gohan got a point." Said Mikasa "Let me ask you a question. Don't you think that the Female Titan looks a little bit like Annie?"
"What?"
"No ,it looks a lot like her."Commented Gohan ,again. "I didn't think of it back then, but now when you guys mention it, it adds up."
"And in addition ,she used her maneuver gears to kill the captured Titan." Armin explained
"Hold on , but no one was caught in the inspection." Eren eyes got wider every time he received a new information. "Even with the Wolfpack!"
"The Wolfpack?"Puzzled Gohan.
No one got much attention to Gohan's question with the exception of Levi and Erwin whose already suspicious of the boy who claimed to came from Wall Sina to not know about such an notorious organization .
Unawared of Gohan's question ,Armin continued: "She brought Marco's gears. That's how she get away with it."
"How does Marco have anything to with this?"Startled Gohan and Eren when they said the same thing at the same time. "How do you know?"
"We fixed our gears together. I know every detail of Marco's Gears ,every dent, every spot." Explained Armin.
Gohan and Eren were about to ask more question until Levi interrupt them.
"Fine. Do you have any further evidences?"
"No , that's all we got?" Answered Armin
"Then how can we know for sure that's it her?" Questioned Levi.
"We have Gohan,captain." Answered Petra. She turned to Gohan. "Can you still sense energy?"
"I can." Assured Gohan, despite his injuries.
"Can you still recognize the Female Titan's human energy?"Now it was Oulo turn to ask.
"I still remember the energy ." Gohan answered confidently "If I able to approach Annie, I'll sense her energy…."
"And if her energy is what you sense in the expediton,she's the one." Interrupted Eren with excitement "But if not,then she's innocence. You have to come."
"I'm afraid that Gohan will not be available for this occasion." Only Levi was the only who was not surprised by what Erwin said.
"Pardon?" The Monkey Boy was the first one to react.
"What do mean, Commander?" Asked Petra.
"Sir, Gohan's ability would be crucial in capturing the Titan."Added Gunther.
"He's right,Commander ." Protested Armin, this was the first time Armin stood up to a commander . "I know that Gohan is in no stage to fight but we just need his confirmation."
"It's not about his injuries!" The commander cold voice silenced all. "There are some problem regarding his paper works. We need him for further investigation."
Oh ,no, they had found out the truth. Gohan could tell that the Scout Regiment had dug into his file, which was not exist ,they had lost their trust in him. He did not know if they believe him if he tell them the truth.
"Paper work? What could possibly go wrong with that? It can't be too serious. Please don't say you suspecting him." Petra angrily stood up.
"Petra, stand down." Ordered Levi. "This is just a formality ,that's all."
"Fine. When will you need him?"Sat down Petra.
"After this meeting is done." Calmly Answered Erwin. "Mike is waiting for him outside."
"Wait,so that's why he here?" this was Jean.
"Commander Erwin ,sir." Everyone looked at Gohan to see that the boy was shaking, unknowing if it was the pain or the fear. "Do I still have your benefit of the doubt?"
"It's depleting ." Erwin's cold voice froze the room.
"It is settled then." Gohan struggled to stand up with his crutch then he moved to Mikasa. "Whether Annie is the Female Titan or not, Mikasa you must understand that it is important that she is incapacitated before you know the truth."
"What do you mean?" Mikasa did not understand what Gohan was trying to say.
"If she is…. indeed the Female Titan, should she turn, thousands of lives will be at stake . Not just yours, Armin's or Eren's. Many innocents will be in danger if you allow her transform into a Titan." He dropped his crutch to hold Mikasa hands. "Do you understand, Mikasa? Thousands of lives are depending on you! No mater how she irritates you, don't let her know you're on to her. Knock her out before she can pose a threat to anyone. Pleaaase, promise me! Promise me that you won't you let her transform!"
Mikasa widened her eyes, she leaned down to picked up Gohan's crutch and helped the Monkey Boy to his feet. "I got it. You can count on me. Annie Leonheart will not transform into a Titan."
"Let the plan be in motion. With or without me, you will succeed." Gohan's struggled to the stair. "Better not let Mike waiting." Petra quickly rushed to help him. "Thanks."
"That's good Annie,keep it up!"
Annie kicked and punched repeatedly at the punching bag before her as her father shouted behind her.
"I expect the best from my daughter." It had been hours since her training started,when she stopped to take a breath ,her father rushed her. "Move, who told you is time to rest."
Just as she intended to continue ,another voice interrupted her.
"Mr…. Piccolo ."She turn around to see her father had disappeared, instead she saw Gohan Son body slowly sliding down on a tree , somehow the scene terrified a person like her to a point that she opened her eyes.
Sunshine poured into Annie's eyes as she woke up, she squinted, it couldn't be worse than the Solar Flare and she had it twice. The girl get off from her bed,as she look around ,the bunk beds were all empty, which meant that all her comrades had already awaken , which also meant that she was late. However, she did not very rushed to change her outfit, instead she took her time to put on her Military Police uniform before casually walked to the rest off the squad.
"Look who finally decides to wake up!" Commented Hitch, one of Annie's Military Police "You looked terrifyingly asleep ,I didn't dare to wake you. Maybe I should've? Sorry."
'I killed someone special for me a few days ago,thank you' Annie decided to not saying anything and leaned at the wall.
"You're rather a slacker to duty, you know that."Said Marlo ,another fellow Military Police .
"Now,Marlo,you'll upset her!" Mocked Hitch.
"She's antisocial!"
"Nock it off ,you guys. She was in the battle of Trost,which means she's the only one of who actually saw some real actions."Said Boris,another MP. "She's been through hell ,give her some time to adjust."
The chatters continued on until interrupted by the appearance of a officer, whom the squad saluted.
"At ease! Thanks."Said the commander as he was looking at a bundle of files. "I got you all here because I have actual work for you, it's not the usual routine as we did before. It got something to do with someone from the Scout Regiment. We'll cooperate with the Wolfpack Security Personnel to escort them when the cross the town through the main streets. HQ has already sent a escort detail for this, so you only have to assist when the convoy is cleared. Dismiss."
"Sir,permission to speak freely?" Asked Marlo.
"Go ahead." Approved the commander.
"Should we allow the Wolfpack to take part with the Brigade's business to begin with?"Said Marlo
"Huh?"
"The Wolfpack and Lady Winters have broken every laws of the King. Having such a sizable private paramilitary force will put the safety of the Royal Family and the system to jeopardy . Lady Winters claimed that the Wolfpack only have 300 men and women, but gods know how many she truly has. And currently she is letting her private militias take over our jobs. If this continues, soon the people will lose faith in the Military Police. Afterwards, who knows can that blue haired bitch overthrow the King and claim the throne for herself?!" Marlo spoke freely.
"Okay, I do not have time to explain to you." The Commander shoved the papers to Marlo "Everything you need to know is in here."
Before Marlo could say anything,the officer turned his back and open the door before him where other high ranking military police were playing cards inside. "Sorry for letting you wait. Saved a hand for me?"
"Bastards!"Shouted Marlo soon after his squad set on position where the convoy would be. "I've never know that the Military Police would be this rotten."
"Agree,the amount of slacking in the Brigade is getting out of hands." Said Hitch. "Well,to be fair that's why I join,but it rather sucks that they assign all the hard works to the rookies like us all the times. Seriously!"
"Fucking imbeciles ,this is the reason why the Wolves steal our jobs."Frustrated Marlo.
"Then why did you join the MPs,Marlo? You're pretty much corrupt as the rest of us!" Replied Boris while he load a catridge to his rifle. "You should have chosen the Wolfpack."
Marlo's hair moved as he gawked at Boris. "You know very well that the Wolves only recruit orphans under the age of 15. And by the way,you're wrong ,Boris. I'm nothing like you degenerates . I joined up because the Military Police is in dire need of repair."
There was a brief moment of silent among the squad after Marlo inspirational speech. Annie thought of Eren, this guy was just like him, but just like Eren, he lacked the competency of Gohan. Gohan was the kind of person who could realise his ideal by just sheer strength .
The silent was broken by Hitch's clap. "Woah, I've never take you as a crusader type."
"How are you gonna manage that?"Curious Boris.
"By working my way to the top,of course. When I'm in charge,I'll install a new system that will make those who dishonest pay for their transgression " Marlo clutched his hand into a fist "The MP just need a little discipline that's all. In time, it'll be put in proper shape"
This resulted in Hitch fell into her knees and laugh as she slam her hands to the ground "Oh my god, it is even more retarded than before!Ha ha ha.."
"Good luck with that. I don't think the Lady would let that happen."Commented Boris.
"What is the point,anyway." Commented Annie. "When a do-gooder like you take charge of the Brigade, I think you'll end up working alone."
"Really? That's the first thing you say when you open your mouth?" grunted Marlo.
"Please don't get me wrong." She said "I don't doubt your sincerity,I know conviction when I see it. You're not the first person,you the third actually , who thought they take on the world and change things for the better." She thought of Eren and Gohan. "It takes a lot of courage to go against the flow,I respect that. But of course it could be that you're all bunch of fools."
"Well,listen , though hate Winters, I wouldn't say she's a fool."Marlo sigh .
"How so?" Annie suddenly got curious, although being in wall Sina for an amount of time and encountered the Wolfpack, but there was so little information she had on this 'Lady Winters'.
"She manages to create a private militia with 300 strong that is more disciplined and effective than the Brigade."Said Marlo "And invented quite a lot of stuffs like the guns we using . Most people would be arrested for such action, but somehow she roams free. What she has are will and capability. I have the will and I am working on with the capability ."Then he remembered what he surposed to do. "You know what? Enough chit chat,let's go." He ordered.
Then the squad start marching out of the headquarters. On the march ,Annie decided to inspect on rifle. It seemed that the intel was wrong, the inhabitants of this island were not ill-equiped. The bolt action rifle she was wielding was rather up to date, it was able to hold 5 bullets inside and the bolt was greased so it could be pulled easily. She never knew the Eldians would be able to product such a weapon after the flintflocks she had seen in Trost. Whoever this "Lady Winter" was ,she was very likely not local to had this knowledge. And she saw the Wolfpack in action once, on that missing girl case. She had never seen such organized military unit before ,they had taken down the criminal with martial art that made her reminded of Gohan. Talking about Gohan, their leader had a resemblance to him. These intels were worth discussing with her comrades, which she should do soon.
"The escort wagons were scheduled to pass through the outer gates in 45 minutes." Ordered Marlo as the squad marched in single file. "Once they arrives, everyone take up your positions. Got it?"
"Yeah, yeah , we got it."Answered Hitch ,then she yawned just to slam her head right into Marlo's back. "Hey!"
The squad looked at the reason why Marlo stopped. In front of them where two MP officers who helped loading crates with MP insigna on them to a boat.
"They're shipping them to the interior?" Asked Boris.
"Do you find it strange that a merchants guild conduct the transport?"Said Marlo. "What are they up to?"
He immediately found his answers when the merchant gave the two officers a bag of coins just before getting onto the boat.
"Those bastards are illegally selling government property !" Marlo grunted angrily just before he ran forward.
"Hey,it's not our assignment !" yelled Boris.
Ignored his comrade plead ,the temporally squad leader still ran towards the two Military Police who had sold the equipments to merchant. Just as he got close to them and stop,the two officers already awared of his present.
"What the fuck you looking at,rookie?" One of them asked.
"You can't sell government equipment ,it's against the law!"Said Marlo.
"Is that so ?" They asked.
"Those supplies are the property of hard working citizens who paid for them with their taxes" Answered Marlo "And that means…"
The officers bursted out of laughter just before the young rookie could finish his words.
"Can you believe this? A rookie blackmailing his superior officers." He took out a coin out from the bag and gave it to Marlo "I'm thinking you have a bright future a head of you."
Marlo was stunted for moment just before the two corrupt officers started to leave.
"Wait" he snapped out of it. "Hey" . He grabbed one of the officer's shoulder. "What you did is against the law!"
The next thing Marlo knew was a pain in his stomach, then another in his shoulder. He fell to his knees before he saw the officer he grabbed started to kick him again and again until he slammed his own face into the ground.
Annie decided to intervein. When she was walking toward the scene, she noticed another person was doing the same from an alley right next to the officer. The man was bald, dressed in a black suit with a distinctive facial hair, wearing a pair of glasses . She was close enough to hear the man voice.
"What's going on here?" The stranger asked.
"Fuck off!" the officer who beated Marlo said.
"This is none of your business." Said the other.
"Oh, apologies . Perhaps I haven't introduced myself properly. " The man calmly answered while he reached into his jacket. The officers took a step back and cream faced when the stranger pulled out a blue armband and wore it on his left arm,there was black snowflake emblem on it. "John Ingham. Top Beta. Wolfpack Security Personnel. Winters Industry."
"Holy shit!" Annie heard Boris voice behind her . "Do you know who that is? It is John Ingham. THE JOHN INGHAM!"
"What?" Puzzled Annie
"He is one the Wolfpack's three Top Betas ,and the right hand man of the Alpha. Only a handful of people see him in person." Added Hitch. "But is that really him?"
"I'm rather a bit confused,gentlemen."The two MP superior officers petrified when the young man spoke "I saw crates with the Military Police sigils on them being loaded to a ferry boat. I hope those not military."
"Of course not, Beta Ingham." The officer who gave Marlo the coin trembled "We just lend them the crates, the contents are rather trivial ."
"Yes, it is not like we were selling military equipment ,are we?"The one who gave Marlo a beating added.
"That is delightful to hear." Ingham smiled "You know how much trouble Winters Industry will have if somebody trace the content back to us?"
"Yes,of course." The officers replied "Thanks gods it just the crates."
"Hmm, how fortunate!" The Wolf glanced at the two who immediately avoid his eyesight ,then John Ingham's smile faded "What's in those crates?"
"Sir?" they asked.
"Uniforms? Unperishable provisions? Bolt-action riffles? ODM Gear?" Those questions were spoken with a calm tone, but only newborn babies did not feel the threat in it "Please do not tell me it's ODM Gears."
"Mr Ingham ,we told you. They just borrowed the crate. They are all empty ."
"How well do you swim?"The Top Beta nodded and asked an irrelevant question. It was obvious that he didn't believe them.
"Uh,what?"
"I asked you two fine gentlemen ." He took off his glasses and put them in his jacket. "How well do you swim?"
And with one quick yet powerful roundhouse kick, both the officers regretted their actions when they were sent right into the waters . The two officers swam rather well after struggling to the surface and to the otherside.
"Okay,he's definitely a Wolf." Said Hitch.
"Get on your feet soldier!" Said Ingham when he approached Marlo, then he looking at the squad who helped him. "You amateurs!"
"Don't you fucking dare!" Said Marlo when he got on his feet. "You people go against the law as much as they do."
"Where I come from, people usually say 'thank you' whenever they were helped." Said Ingham, he pull out his glasses and put them back.
"Long time no see,John." Ingham turned to the voice to see another Top Beta who dressed in black with a dark long hair, followed him were five regular Betas armed with bolt-action rifles. "Causing trouble already?."
"Long time no see too, Gleaves."He answered before the other Top Beta hugged him "Just some misunderstanding."
"Sure!"Replied Gleaves ,then he turn to Marlo's squad. "Are you the escorting details?"
"Yes,we are." It was Annie who answered. "You the Security Personnel assigned with us?"
"We're it." Answered Gleaves, he points at the Betas. "You follow them to outer gate, I'll catch up later."
The Five Sub-Betas simply nodded and took a head start which the MP detail followed, not forgetting to glance at the two Top Betas for the last time.
Ingham observed the MPs as they marches, he notices one of them constantly turned back and looked at him and Gleaves. She was a blond rookie, there was something he found odd about her, like his instinct telling him something was wrong. The intel he got from the Recon Corps was that Gohan had been severely injured by an unknown titan that share the ability with Eren Jaeger ,he recalled it was called 'Female Titan'. According to his source ,the Recon Corps high command theorized that the Titans was in the military. He mentioned it to the Lady, but she told him not to be bothered.
"Come on." Ingham's train of though was disrupted when Gleaves pat on his shoulder "Let me buy you a drink."
"I'm on duty. No Alcohol ."He answered
"Just coffee then."
The Coffee shop had recognized The Wolfpack as its regulars a couple years ago. The Alpha usually lead a few personnel here from time to time when they were restricted from alcohol .The Alpha would have a lot of sugar in his coffee, Bury and Gleaves would take two cubes, and Ingham none.
When they sat at their table on the outside of the shop,Gleaves immediately light a cigarette with a match as he always did. And because of their status as Wolves and also regulars, their coffees were served in 2 minutes.
"Damn, John. I miss the automatics."He exhaled and patted on his rifle.
"You know too well that we can't submachineguns to the public eyes." Ingham felt a little worry that his fellow Wolf uttered a secret equipment out loud. "Training and covert operations only."
"I know, I know. It's just that I hate these out dated guns." Gleaves inhaled some smoke before changing the subject. "What's the assignment our Lady 's given you?"
"It 's classified " Answered Ingham.
"Is the escort mission we're assigned of related to it?"Gleaves asked him again.
"Well, it is." Ingham decided to tell the truth.
"Fuckin' wow shit!" Exclaimed Gleaves as he inhaled another smoke. "Finally , I get to get involved in what ever secret mission you have with the Lady and Alpha."
"I think you and Bury will get involved in more missions after this is done."
"Okay, who is it? How many?" Exhaled and asked Gleaves.
"Classified Two. From the Recon Corps"
"Which one will we take?"
"Both." Answered Ingham as he sipped his coffe.
"WOW ,we are greedy ,aren't we?" Laughed Gleaves . "Well ,we mess with people,people don't mess with us."
"Well, the black haired MP from earlier said something similar!" remarked Ingham, remembering Marlo.
Both Ingham and Gleaves then bursted into laughters.
"Oh, I love being in the Pack." Said Gleaves, before he finally noticed his cup of coffee. He grabbed it and took a sip. "So, what with you and Alpha and the Lady? Never asked why you guys are so close."
'Because we came from the same world' Ingham hesitated for a minute and answered. "Well the Pack started with just us three. "
"I somehow forgot. Hmm . I don't mind ,though." Gleave sip his coffee. "Most of the pack don't mind, either. Except for one."
"Who?" Asked Ingham.
"Peter Bury. He even asked to take part in your current mission. What ever that is." Answered Gleaves . "He once told that you guys have a secret chamber in the castle."
"That would be reliable if we have one." Answered Ingham.
Ingham then noticed that Gleaves was holding back something,however ,just before he could say something, The Top Betas were interrupted by deafening sound of thunder. Then across the building a beam of lightning appeared. A short moment later,all the customers in the café panicked as a gigantic ,skinless woman emerged.
"What the fuck is that?" Asked Gleaves in awe.
"That's a Titan." Ingham answered as he calmly looked at the Female Titan.
"Okay, I think that is cue to leave." Gleaves took out five coins and place then on the table. "Keep the changes."
"Hermann!" Ingham reached out his hand to Gleaves. "Your rifle."
"You're not going there ,are you?" Gleaves asked if his friend was out of his mind or not.
