Severus frowned at his parchment sheet, deep in thought. Finding a suitable name and motto for his House was more difficult than he had imagined. He had begun with his House future name, listing anagrams of his own name on the sheet. Most were crossed out as he had rejected one after another. Now, only three remained.

I be Severus Astoan Princeps.

Princeps meant first or leader in Latin, and had been used as a title for Roman emperors. It was a good name, if a bit pompous. However, Severus felt it was much too close to his grandfather's own House name as princeps was the root for prince.

I be Severus Caspion Serpant.

Serpent meant snake in both French and English, and serpant was its homophone. Severus grimaced. It would be a statement to his belief in Slytherin. But was it wise to impose this weight on the shoulders of his descendants if he ever had some? Plus, he was not fond of Caspion as a second name.

I be Severus Preston Caspian.

Caspian like the Caspian Sea, between Europe and Asia. A metaphor to say he stood between Wizards and Goblins.
Severus Preston Caspian. It sounded so much better than Severus Tobias Snape. Lord Severus Preston Caspian. Heads of House were automatically awarded the nobility title. Mother would be proud, he thought fleetingly, with neither joy nor pain.

House Caspian. It had a nice ring to it. He only needed to find a motto as compelling.

The best motto obviously was a short motto of apparent simplicity but with complex layers when one began thinking about its meaning.

Severus frowned to himself. He did not truly need a motto as short as most Noble Houses had. In fact, from his conversation with Narcissa on her wedding day, the Noble Houses' motto had not always been as short as they were today. He was pretty sure they had been shortened during Middle Ages when wars and duels had been more common and House mottos had been used as battle cries.
This did not solve his problem of finding the main idea for his motto. Did he even know the kind of ideas he wanted his motto to convey? Which words could he be certain to always honour even in ten or fifty years? Pensively, Severus reached for his quill. What did he look for? What did he respect?

Knowledge. Magic. Learning. Exploring. Choices. To question.

What did he despise?

Idiots. People who do not think for themselves. Adults who shirk their responsibilities. Resignation. Unnecessary Pride.

Severus felt a shiver run down his spine. This whole business required far too much introspection for his taste. He snorted, rolling his eyes to himself. He had always believed in being honest with himself. He would never forgive Mother for accepting the limits his father had established. For resigning herself to her lot without looking for another solution. For choosing the "coward(s" way out.

Severus shook himself. How did this translate into a motto?

Magic. Choices. Thinking by myself. Responsibilities. Knowledge. No limits.

Severus cocked his head thoughtfully. Maybe…

My limits are Magic's.

He frowned. It was not quite right. It lacked the idea of him being his own person. Of making his choices.

My limits are Magic's. My choices are mine.

No. This was too blunt. And still off.

My choices within Magic's limits.

Almost but…

Magic and myself for sole limits.

This. Yes, this sounded right. He had no idea how it would be perceived. Severus hesitated before floo-calling his grandfather. To his surprise, the man immediately came through the floo to Spinner End without letting Severus explain the subject of his call.

"House name advice?" asked his grandfather with a sparkle in his eyes.

"House motto advice," corrected Severus as he handed him the sheet with his chosen House name, his tentative motto beneath it.

Augustus studied the sheet with attention, going over the House names Severus had rejected. He paused as he read the motto, tapping his nose thoughtfully.

"I approve of the House name," Augustus finally said. "Distinguished but not pompous. You respected the anagram rule. The motto... I do not know how it will be understood. I am afraid the Ministry might take it as a provocation."

He sighed.
"In fact, I do not know how our group will understand it. It conveys the idea you are your only master. Some will not appreciate it."

"But you approve," stated Severus.

"I do," nodded his grandfather. "Princes are not ones to avoid difficulties."

He smiled suddenly.
"Lucius will be jealous I knew your name before him."

Severus almost rolled his eyes. Lucius and Jonathan were the only Wizards with Augustus who knew of his plan as he had needed their assurances they would become his House's allies.

"He will know soon enough. It's not even official. It might not even work."

"If you say so," answered his grandfather mischievously. "Well, I will leave you to your preparations. Give my best to Dhaal."

Severus watched his grandfather disappear in the green flames of the floo with trepidation. Soon, he would know if the older man had been right about his capacity to create his own House.

Two days later, Severus sat in his home in front of Hoardrock discussing the process to create Caspian House.
Severus had thought long and hard about where his first home should be. Before his Apprenticeship, he would have said anywhere but in Spinner's End. Today, under Tuei´s careful care, his childhood home truly felt like home for the first time. Dhaal loved the place, especially because it was close to a wooded as well as several parks his Familiar could easily explore. Any house he might prefer to his own was far too expensive. But Severus had troubles imagining his current home as Caspian Manor. In the end, the solution had come from Lucius who had insisted time and time again each time they met that he could lend Severus money if he needed some—his Brother had first used the word give instead of lend but Severus was already hard-pressed to accept a loan from him, he could never accept a donation. Spinner End's was not a flourishing neighbourhood. Many buildings were empty, occupied by squatters. With the help of Lucius' money and a few subtle but effective uses of Magic on unlawful occupants, Severus had been able to buy a number of houses around his home, creating a bubble or a buffer around him. He did not know yet how he was going to set up the area, but it was going to be the first Caspian manor. Tuei and Dhaal were delighted and full of creative but not always pragmatic ideas.
Severus had been lucky Spinner End's was in such a bad state, acquiring the houses for an amount Lucius had not believed at first, low as it was. It was a relief as he was certain to be able to reimburse him once his Lupacem potion was licensed.

Hoardrock had been a pleasant surprise for Severus. He was glad something as intimate as creating his House would be presided over by a Goblin he had already met and liked. It almost felt like another Trial.

"Creating your House is to make an Oath to the land, the land being Britain in your case. The land encompasses the grounds as well as the living creatures on it and the Magic which courses through it. Magic will accept your Oath if it finds you worthy. I do not mean worthy in moral terms but in your capability to comply with your Oath and provide protection," explained Hoardrock. "Do you have any questions, Master Daoack?"

"Not for now," answered Severus.

The Goblin nodded.
"We will now review why you think you will be able to create your own House. I trust you have the necessary documents?"

As proof of his various alliances, Severus needed to provide written commitments from his allies of the Contracts they would establish with Severus' House once it existed. Lucius and Augustus had gladly given them, Lucius boasting gleefully of his flair for finding geniuses. Jonathan had given him one too, rolling his eyes at Severus' embarrassed thanks and stating that Severus was the ally he could not refuse. Clan Röykkiö had also provided a document confirming the Contract between Severus and them would be amended to a Contract between Severus' House and them. To Severus' surprise, he had also received commitments from the Head Pack of Kyirong as well as the Head Pack from Ssylka, Yasha´s uncle—a fact Severus had discovered in the letter attached to their commitment.
When Severus had confirmed to Gringotts his appointment was to create his own House, his clan had apparently decided to reach for some of his potential allies he had no formal agreement with and ask in his stead if they would like to establish a Contract with Severus' House. It was a risk. If Severus failed in creating his House, his potential allies might retract their offer. Clan Röykkiö obviously trusted Severus and put once more many expectations on his shoulders.
Severus had also received a commitment from Family Ressurs—he did not know yet how Vilde and Brage were related to the Matriarch of the Family. The Matriarch had officially proposed to Severus a Contract to work on the Vampire equivalent to his Lupacem potion.

Hoardrock studied the documents carefully before giving Severus a grin full of teeth which might have scared Wizards less familiar with goblin expressions.
"I expected no less of you Master Daoack. Your connections seem sufficient for you not to require a sponsor House. Gringotts is confident you will succeed in creating your House."

Gringotts had a firm policy of not wasting its employees' time. Special appointments were costly except in a few cases involving Rituals. The creation of a House was one of these exceptions but only if Gringotts considered the applicant had high chances to succeed.

"I remind you that succeeding in creating your House depends on Magic judging you worthy to comply with your various Oaths and to protect the land," said Hoardrock seriously.

Severus nodded, holding the Goblin's gaze.

"The ritual is a six step process. One, you will choose the stones through which the Ritual will be conducted. Two, I will engraved the ritual runes on the stones. Three, you will imbue the stones with your Magic. Four, I will present your Alliances to Magic. Five, you will give your Oath. Six, Magic will either accept or refuse your Oath. If the Oath is rejected, the stones will shatter. If the Oath is accepted, the stones will assemble to create your blazon. Any question?"

"No."

His grandfather had already briefed him.

"Very well. I trust you have already chosen your future House name and motto as you will need them for your Oath."

"Of course," answered Severus.

"Let's proceed then," said Hoardrock briskly.

He put a small chest in front of him and opened it to reveal smooth rounded stones of various sizes and colours but no bigger than half of his palm.

"The same principle as for the Familiar Ritual applies. Let yourself reach for the stones which feel right," said Hoardrock.

Severus nodded, already sending his Sense over the chest. The stones on the surface felt flat and unresponsive. He prodded them without success. Those underneath were more interesting, various feelings of helpfulness, protectiveness, focus and belligerence showing through. Four in particular called to him:

Dark red Carnelian. A Sense of curiosity and will to take initiative.
Black Tourmaline, with a strong protective feeling.
Green Moss Agate, with a Sense of stability and grounding.
White translucent Natrolite, inside which Magic sang and danced.

Hoardrock did not say a word as he took the stones selected by Severus to engrave, but Severus caught pride in his eyes as well as general approval in his stance. The Goblin's handiwork was precise and swift, and soon all the stones were engraved. Curious, Severus Sensed the stones over and discovered a new feeling of expectation in them.

"Good. Now, you must pour your Magic inside the stones. Careful. You must Sense the exact amount needed."

Severus lifted an eyebrow at him.
"Are all Wizards who wish to create their House proficient in Sensing?"

Hoardrock looked back at him unimpressed.
"No. You are unusually well equipped to pass this ritual. The better you prepare it, the more chances you have to succeed, and the more chances you have for its results to be what you want them to be."

They locked eyes for a few seconds before Severus nodded and took the stones in his hands. He focused on all four stones at once, using his Sensing shields to cut himself from outside Magic except for his Bond to Dhaal and Draco and his Sense of the stones. Gently, he pushed his Magic inside each stone, careful not to overflow them. As he did so, he Sensed the stones gained awareness of both himself and the other stones. He felt Dhaal observe the process curiously, probing the stones as light as a feather.

His Familiar had agreed not to be in the room during the ritual not to disturb Severus but he was very curious.
Severus did not know how long he poured Magic inside the stones. He stopped when they suddenly resonated as if attuned to himself and each other, like a weird echo but totally unlike what he had Sensed with Lord Voldemort and his Horcruxes echoes.

"Impressive."

Severus looked up to Hoardrock who just nodded, took the stones and deposited them carefully in an empty wooden bowl. Then, the Goblin added Severus' allies' commitments in the bowl one by one. They disappeared in a flash as the essence of the commitment was absorbed by the stones.

Hoardrock looked at Severus solemnly.
"Severus Tobias Snape. Please state the Oath you would offer to Magic in exchange for its support and acceptance."

Severus breathed deeply, feeling Dhaal support shine intensely through their Bond. He put his right hand over the bowl, Sensing the expectation emanating from the stones.
"I, Severus Tobias Snape, swear to live by the motto Magic and myself for sole limits. As the symbol of this Oath, I be Severus Preston Caspian, Head of the Caspian House. I promise that House Caspian will welcome and protect those who swear to live by its motto, and will offer them shelter in Caspian manor should they need it. I promise to defend the land in accordance with my beliefs and my motto as long as it does not oppose my previous Oath to the members of my House."

It felt like time stopped for an instant. Or eternity. Like the entire world held his breath while Magic pondered about Severus' offer. When the world breathed again, Magic rushed through Severus' entire body. He made himself relax, unresisting to the onslaught on his body while remaining watchful it did not alter his inner core. Magic circled through his body seven times then went out through his right hand directly on the stones. Severus felt a sudden unbearable heat under his hand. He gritted his teeth not to take it away, feeling it would break the ritual. Severus did not know how long he remained like this before the world went back to normal. He felt drained as he had never been, even in Bǎo. Peering inside the bowl, he felt a smile draw on his lips as he observed his blazon.

It had the form of a modern French coat of arms. A stylised black Thestral with translucent eyes who seemed to see beyond the physical world stood in its centre, in the stance Dhaal adopted when he was ready for a fight. The background was half green half dark red. It was perfect. Dhaal appeared on his shoulder to look at it, Sensing his complete approval to Severus.

"Kiitos Lord Severus Preston Caspian, Head of Caspian House," said Hoardrock with a huge grin. "I advise against strenuous activities for the rest of the day. Wait for tomorrow before telling your Bonded of your new status. The creation of House Caspian will only be official tomorrow morning once you have survived the night."

Severus looked at him sharply. The Goblin only offered him his full-of-teeth grin.

"We have had a few cases of new Heads of House who died of exhaustion peacefully in their bed the night following the ritual. They represent less than ten percent of the successful new Heads."

His grandfather had carefully not told Severus of this little fact. But Severus had not thought to ask. He still was not as careful as he should be. Severus focused on himself, Sensing his body and his core over. Nothing felt amiss besides this feeling of exhaustion. Dhaal Sensed his agreement and went to find Tuei so she would bring some snacks to Severus.

"You realise your motto and your blazon are unusual and unexpected from most Wizards' point of view," said Hoardrock quietly.

"I could not choose a motto I would not respect," answered Severus. "As for my blazon, the ritual did not give me any control over it so... And Dhaal is my Familiar. It's not that much of a surprise."

"You would be surprised at how few people truly believe you have a Thestral for Familiar. Familiars are already so rare nowadays they have trouble believing someone passed the Ritual and ended up with a Thestral," replied Hoardrock with a slight sneer. "But did you really not try to influence your blazon?" he asked curiously.

"I don't see how," answered Severus puzzled. "My blazon is the symbol of Magic's acceptance of my Oath. It's its decision. I don't see how I could have influenced it without interfering with the ritual and risking failure."

Hoardrock's ears flickered and the Goblin smiled.
"As you may have deduced, this ritual exists for other species though their Oaths are different. For example, Goblins must go through the same process to create new clans, as House elves must if they wish to create a new Line. Most who begin the process have expectations and ideas on what their motto and blazon should be. They sometimes choose their motto less in accordance with themselves than with the impact it will have on others. Some also have a clear picture of what their blazon should look like and will refuse to use some stones even when they are the ones they need. They will also try to influence their blazon emblem. You understand it is the cause of many failures. It can also make for weak foundations for the new clan or House, thus giving less advantages than it should to their members."

Severus wanted to shake his head at the stupidity of some of those so-called intelligent beings. Mottos and Blazons were representative of the House members' selves. Twisting them for appearances sake was criminal.
He wondered if Lily had had difficulties swearing to Magic comes from bravery.

"Hoardrock. What happens when someone from one House marries someone from another one? I assumed you automatically belonged to the House you had married into but it seems more complex."

"Indeed," nodded Hoardrock with a pleased smile. "The newly married partner can choose to become a member of his new House. He will then take on the name of the House. He can also choose to remain in his past House. As such, he will keep the name of his past House. In this case, a special alliance contract must be made between the two Houses to cover his obligations to each House."

"Can Muggles become members of a House?" asked Severus.

"Yes, but the ritual is particular and their Oath must be adapted to their capacities," answered Hoardrock, looking at Severus calculatingly.

Severus nodded, lost in thoughts. He should ask Andromeda if she had entertained the possibility of creating her own House, or to be adopted into another one. As he was discovering, belonging to a House was important in terms of Magic and politics. Of course, she might have trouble finding one who would also accept Ted.
He would bet Lily had been both enraged and amazed at discovering what belonging to a House meant. Speaking of Lily... Did Petunia's stone still protect her sister now she belonged to House Potter? Severus had built the stone protection on blood relation but was it enough?

His musing was interrupted by Tuei bringing orange juice as well as bread and cheese. Seeing the food made Severus realise he was famished and he quickly devoured several pieces of Saint Nectaire and comté with buckwheat bread. Tuei had travelled all over the world and brought delicious recipes back. Severus had a weakness for French and Chinese food and the Elf knew it, spoiling him every chance she got to Dhaal's great delight.
Hoardrock ate with enthusiasm as well, though he showed more restraint than Severus.

"Master Hoardrock, if you have the time, I would like to discuss my financial situation with you," said Severus once they had sated their hunger.

"It would be my pleasure as I am your official Gringotts representative," answered Hoardrock with a sparkle in his eyes.

"This is wonderful news," said Severus with a smile.

He already knew Hoardrock and was certain the Goblin would handle Severus' estate with care and efficiency. However, to give this role to someone with Hoardrock's capacities meant Gringotts was very attentive to Severus' actions.

"I need to set up a fund Tuei will use for the House expenditure and another for her personal spendings," explained Severus. "I know I have savings on the side but I need to study them in detail to know which amount to give Tuei each month as well as how long I have to find employment."

"You also need to formalise your allies' commitment into Contracts," reminded Hoardrock. "I think you will need to come to Gringotts for half a day to review everything, especially as your Lupacem potion has been patented by Saint Mungo two days ago. You know the Saint Mungo patent allows the brewing and commercialisation of this potion in all Europe. Clan Röykkiö has negotiated the patent Contract and you already received a consequent amount of money for it. Your clan also has several other proposals for you to patent it on the other continents."

"Finally!" exclaimed Severus. "I know the potion is complex but the waiting was frustrating."

"Pack Kyirong helped hurry the process as they were all too aware of the improvement it will bring to all Werewolves," added Hoardrock.

"Thank you for telling me, I'll write them my heartfelt thanks," said Severus.

"I wanted to address another subject," said Hoardrock suddenly grim.

Severus nodded, waiting for the Goblin to elaborate though he had a good idea of what he needed to discuss.

"I know Drunek told you of the taint I felt on you when you came to ask about your Apprenticeship. I am pleasantly surprised not to feel anything of the sort on you today. Is the matter resolved?" inquired Hoardrock.

"It's complicated," answered Severus, carefully choosing his words. "My shields protect me from the taint and I have identified its sources. I am currently planning how to best deal with it safely."

They locked eyes, the Goblin searching for any sign Severus was unsure of himself or downsizing the problem.

"Very well. I trust you to take care of it as you see fit," finally stated Hoardrock.

"You know I will," replied Severus evenly.

The Goblin smiled then got up.
"Thank you Master Daoack. It was a privilege to witness the creation of your House. I will proclaim it officially tomorrow."

"Thank you Master Hoardrock. I am honoured by your continuous support," answered Severus with a bow.

The Goblin bowed back then left Severus who immediately went to bed for a good twelve hours.

When he woke up early in the morning, he ate with appetite then took his former Prince book, curious to analyse how the creation of his House had impacted his Módiǎn.
The cover had changed and now bore Severus' blazon with House Caspian written in silver letters on the front. All the previous chapters it had contained remained, but there were new additions. A chapter on the Malfoy House as well as one on the Wilkes House. A chapter on Vampires and the Ressurs Family. A chapter on Pack Kyirong and Pack Ssylka. To his surprise, there also was a chapter on House Caspian and its creation, describing its motto and its blazon. The stones Severus had used during the ritual were also listed as their significance was important and added layers to the House motto. He also found added rules on Houses. The Head of House's first child was not the obligate successor, another member could be chosen if he embodied the House traits better. Heads of House could pass on their title before their death when they felt they were no longer the most apt for this responsibility.

Severus spent the morning perusing the book, only interrupted by Hoardrock's brief letter to confirm he had recorded House Caspian officially and to propose him a time for their Gringotts half-day meeting.
He had lunch with Lucius' family as well as his friends to announce his new achievements. Evan and Regulus pestered him with questions on both his new House and his Lupacem potion, some he did not know how to respond to. He basked in their attention and admiration and enjoyed the joyful atmosphere of the meal. Then he flow-travelled to Prince Manor where his grandmother showered him with praise, his grandfather happy to watch with pride coming from his entire being and enveloping Severus warmly. Severus went back home in the evening, only to have a long call with Drunek and Frekka who congratulated him for both the patent and his House, and then regaled him with the kids' latest mischiefs.

Two days later, Severus attended a special conference in Manchester on creatures' rights and difficulties in the Wizarding World organised for Lord Voldemort's campaign. The Lord had managed to secure the presence of official representatives from various species, the most numerous aside from Wizards being Werewolves and Vampires. The conference room held about 500 seats which were all taken, some people having to stand against the walls.

"I first wish to thank all of you for taking the time to come today," began Lord Voldemort as he stood on the scene in front of his public. "I know you all have daily tasks and problems which require your attention, and like many others, you could have decided you were not concerned by creature's rights, as the ministry so elegantly calls the rights and duties of the ones who are neither Wizards nor Squibs but live in Britain among them."

The barb at the Ministry earned the Lord a few nods, but most of the audience remained impassive. Severus nodded to himself. Traditionally, Manchester followed Hogwarts' Headmaster's political lead. To have the room full already was a small victory.

"But you decided you cared. Because you are one of those so-called creatures. Because you are different from the Ministry's norm. Because you do not think like the Ministry that Wizards are the only norm. I do not expect you to come and fall at my feet in ecstasy only because you saw me speak," continued the Lord with a smirk. "I hope you will listen to me, debate with me, think about my proposals and maybe agree with me. You can even make me other proposals I will gladly integrate to my program if they prove to be sensible."

He paused, watching over the assembly. Severus noted the assembly had relaxed during the speech. The Lord was good. His charisma was impressive.

"Before we launch ourselves into passionate debates about the current rights of non-Wizard magical beings and what you and I think those should be, I have an important announcement to make. Most of you may remember that four years ago, following the Hogwarts Werewolf affair, I offered a reward to anyone who invented a Potion which improved Werewolves daily condition or lessened their aggressive tendency during the full moon. Despite many researchers being spurred by my offer, no one succeeded. Until today."

Severus felt the public's sudden focus at the announcement. As he looked around, he noticed the eagerness of most while others seemed dubious.

"Five days ago, Saint Mungo patented a potion which allows Werewolves to keep their mind during the full moon, though they remain in wolf form during the three days of the full moon. As important, it makes the transformation painless and lessens the strain and fatigue felt by the Werewolves as the full moon approaches."

Whispers ran across the crowd at Lord Voldemort's words, excitement and incredulity warring among the listeners.

"Of course, feel free to consult Saint Mungo's testing and conclusion on this potion, the Lupacem potion," added Lord Voldemort with a knowing grin. "Or you can ask members of Pack Kyirong who volunteered as testers at the beginning of the project then supported it until it was patented."

Severus wanted to roll his eyes as people began looking in the assembly for anyone from the Pack. Lord Voldemort would not have said this if what he had said before was untrue.

"If I may have your attention once more," called the Lord after waiting a few minutes for people to talk between themselves. "The creator of the Lupacem potion worked in collaboration with Wandmaker Maverick."

The reaction to the renown Wandmaker was instantaneous. Though Ollivanders was famous for making wands who always worked for their owner, Maverick had the reputation of making the best wand to fulfil your potential if you worked hard to do so.

"Together, they developed a particular wand for Werewolves. A wand which, used in combination with the Lupacem potion, allows a Werewolf the same mastery over himself as a Full Werewolf."

Those who did not know what being a Full Werewolf meant were puzzled. The others were either impressed or completely dubious.

"I know this announcement is unexpected, which is why I asked the second of Pack Kyirong, Sthir Gadhavi, to testify of his experience in front of you. Mister Gadhavi is the Full Werewolf who oversaw the project and his students were the first testers. Please, welcome Sthir Gadhavi from Pack Kyirong."

Severus straightened up in surprise as Sthir came up the stage under the crowd's applause. Looking around him, he realised several people seemed to know Sthir, or at least know of him.

"Good afternoon people," said Sthir with a small bow. "My Head-pack judged many Werewolves would be hesitant to believe in this miraculous Lupacem potion at first, without speaking of its associated wand. He thought Lord Voldemort's request was a good opportunity to share our experience with you and to encourage you to try the Lupacem potion out. So thank you Lord Voldemort for this opportunity," said Sthir, bowing slightly to the Lord.

"It is my pleasure Mister Gadhavi."

"So let me tell you about this project, how it began..."

Severus listened with one ear as Sthir recalled the evolution of the project, the tests and trials and successes. Severus had learnt recently from Yasha´s letter of congratulations that the Lupacem potion had been available to Pack Kyirong even during the patent phase as they had volunteered to be Saint Mungo's Guinea pigs. Yasha had explained to Severus that the Pack had kept for themselves one of the effects of the use of the wall-bridge: thanks to it, Werewolves could perform Magic better. Indeed, non Full Werewolves experienced variation of their power and control linked to the phase of the moon, variation which the wall-bridge compensated for. This information was not advertised as it was a huge weakness. Hunting Werewolves was still a popular sport among some crowds so Pack Kyirong saw no need to reveal that depending on the Moon Phase, they could be either close to invisible or as defenceless as a lamb. The Pack was thus deeply grateful to Severus—Yasha had joked that they wanted to make Severus an honorary member of the Pack.

Severus almost felt bad for Lupin who had gone through Hogwarts not knowing why he sometimes struggled to perform spells that easily came to him every other day. Almost because he was a Marauder and because he remembered struggling with his wand too. He felt his mind freeze as he realised that to pass the Ritual, he had to have… What were Maverick's words? To prove your valour. To face death.

When had he actually gained control of his wand, both in precision and power? Considering the wand-checker reaction, it must have been before his visit to the Ministry for his emancipation. His fifth year had been complicated, even his OWLs had been uncertain. So he must have truly bonded with his wand between his OWLs and NEWTs. Which was weird now he thought about it because he had gone through Lupin almost mauling him and Mother's suicide several months before. Unless his wand had thought he was cheating by using Occlumency and considered the day he had opened all his boxes as his true trial.

Severus' attention was brutally jolted back to the stage as his mind informed him Sthir's had pronounced his name.

"I have told you everything I deem important about our experiences with the Lupacem and its associated wand. I would like to end with my entire Pack heartfelt thanks to the creator of the Lupacem potion, Severus Snape. I mean, Lord Severus Caspian," concluded the Werewolf.

"Yes, Severus created his own House five days ago," commented Lord Voldemort casually.

The crowd's comments were loud this time. Severus felt his ears redden as he heard various praises mixed with incredulity at his young age—he was twenty, not that young! Lily was married with one child at his age!—and discussions on the protocol he had used. He was glad not to be in front of them yet. Even his training would not have hidden his embarrassment.

"Thank you Mister Gadhavi for sharing your experience with us," said Lord Voldemort as he came to stand near the Werewolf, bowing slightly to him. "Please remain with us a moment longer."

He turned to the crowd, talks dying as he focused on them.
"I'm sure most of you will be surprised to learn that another potion to help Werewolves was being tested by St Mungo at the same time as the Lupacem."

Most of the audience certainly was. Severus was very curious to learn more about this potion that Mulciber had mentioned on his first Death Eater meeting.

"This potion allows Werewolves to keep their mind during the three days of the full moon, at the small cost of slowly poisoning them," explained the Lord, stressing the last words.

Low murmurs of disbelief and outrage answered him. He let them grow for a few seconds before holding his hands up to ask for silence.

Lord Voldemort nodded gravely before speaking again.
"Before the Lupacem, it would certainly have been hailed as an improvement. This potion is called Wolfsbane. As you can see, even its name shows that unlike the Lupacem, its creator was thinking of the well-being of Wizards first instead of thinking of the well-being of all of us. Wizards, Werewolves, Vampires, Faes, … We all are Magic's children. None of us deserve to be poisoned to alleviate the fears of ignorant fools."

Thunderous applause followed the Lord's statement.

Lord Voldemort bowed deeply then once more asked for silent by raising his hand.
"As I told you, I promised to reward anyone who managed to help Werewolves with the painful period of the full moon. I believe that the creator of the Lupacem, my dear Severus, has achieved more than anyone thought possible in this regard. I think it's only fair he receives a just reward for his huge success. Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Lord Severus Preston Caspian!"

Severus took a deep breath before getting up from his seat. He kept his face blank as thunderous applause followed him to the stage. He bowed to Sthir and Lord Voldemort then positioned himself to half face the Lord, half face the assembly. They were not a goblin jury but they were impressive.

"Thank you Severus for coming today."

Lord Voldemort's voice resonated eerily above the suddenly silent assembly.
"Thank you for your hard work and tenacity. I have no doubt they are part of your success. Aside from your impressive ability with potions, Abraxas most often praised you for those two qualities to everyone who was within earshot. I know he would be proud of you today and the first one to tell me he had been right to believe in you."

"I know I would not be here today without my Mentor's help. I miss him dearly and I work everyday to be the man he had seen in me," answered Severus, uncomfortable sharing such private feelings but knowing it was his role today.

The Lord squeezed his shoulder briefly before turning toward the assembly.
"Many of you may not know that Severus was among the first batch of Hogwarts' pupils to benefit from the Slytherin Mentorship. He's the shining example of why this Mentorship should be mandatory for all children raised in the Muggle world. Yes, Severus was born gifted. But without proper guidance and support, he might well have wasted his potential. I will tell you later of the numbers which show all our Mentorees made tremendous progress in their studies once they were supported by their Mentor. But now is not the time. I just wish to take a moment to remember Lord Abraxas Malfoy who helped Severus and supported him when Severus decided Hogwarts was not the place where he could flourish."

Lord Voldemort bowed his head briefly, then smiled at Severus.
"Today is not a time for sadness. You succeeded where many had failed. Your success will help many, Werewolves or not. Who knows how many talents have been wasted because they were hidden by the werewolf curse? Thank you Severus. I realise my reward is a small thing compared to what you achieved, but it may help you develop another potion half as useful as the Lupacem as sadly, researchers are not always the most well-paid workers, especially when their research takes time to come to fruition."

Severus bowed to the Lord as he received the symbolic purse containing 5000 galleons.
He straightened up, head high, while the public got up and clapped enthusiastically. Severus bowed slightly in various directions, catching blurred smiles and glimpses of approval.

"Now, I know Severus would rather go back to his anonymity so I won't linger more than necessary on his impressive achievements," stated the Lord with a smirk before growing serious. "I only want to say that I am ready to freely provide your Lupacem potion to all the Werewolves who need it to find their foot and a job during three months. I estimate it should be enough time to begin a new life."

Another bout of thunderous applause rose from the audience, giving Severus the perfect excuse to leave the stage and go back to his seat. He noticed Sthir doing the same as Lord Voldemort basked in the public attention but he did not have the time for more deep thinking as his neighbours engaged him in an animate talk about his Lupacem potion, completely ignoring the Lord's following speech. Severus did his best to answer courteously without losing patience when the questions turned more private. He deftly evaded most of those, only answering those he really needed to in order to support the cause and his own status.

He knew he was walking a fine line with the group, not bearing the Mark and not partaking in Muggles repression. Lord Voldemort's obvious trust in him despite those two previous facts had irritated several of the Death Eaters, especially among the most extremes. Moreover, Severus needed to keep Lord Voldemort's trust long enough to save the Lord from himself.

His neighbours finally turned their attention back to Lord Voldemort when the debate began, covering various subjects from creatures' right to education as well as finance. Some talks grew heated, even requiring a few Aguamenti to cool down the most intense speakers. It lasted well into the night, Severus reaching his home exhausted but impressed.

The conference was the mirror image of Lord Voldemort's successful campaign through speeches all over the country. Many came to listen to him, sometimes already convinced, sometimes intrigued, sometimes already against him. The main point was that the Lord made a lasting impression which gave him the possibility to bring people to his side.
His strategy now was clearly built on two axes. One, the Death Eaters underlined the faults of the current system with their actions while becoming increasingly violent as their demands went unanswered, though they were careful to humiliate and instill fear instead of maiming—killing was obviously forbidden except in self-defence. They now left reasons for their actions and their demands on the place of their crimes, in addition to Mortmordre. Second, Lord Voldemort wandered the country, sharing reasonable ideas, underlining the current Minister's failures and using his charisma to make himself accessible. Several of the most respected Death Eaters had openly stated their support for him and went to conferences and debate in his name. They did not partake in the raids as more than ever, they had to be careful not to give any proof of Lord Voldemort's involvement with the Death Eaters.

On the opposite side, the current Minister and Dumbledore clearly walked hand in hand, though they had not formalised their alliance yet. The Minister's strategy was the same as Lord Voldemort, giving conferences and using official ceremonies to promote his ideas and attack Lord Voldemort's. Muggleborns as well as Houses who were on the gryffindor or hufflepuff side were his most fervent supporters, speaking in favour of his economic and social assessment as well as his new proposals. Minister Birkins' equivalent to the Death Eaters were fiscal control and Auror intimidation, although with the latter he was careful to remain on the side of the law since Lord Wilkes' death.
Dumbledore was far more subtle than the Minister. He used interviews as well as his membership to several prominent corps to whisper ideas and opinions in attentive ears. His favourite past Hogwarts students were also his staunchest supporters, carrying his words to places the Minister and Dumbledore did not have access to.

All parties watched the polls attentively and for now, Lord Voldemort's popularity was rising. If he kept on, he would soon be at an equal number of vote intentions as Minister Birkins.

This certainly was the reason why one morning, Severus' Taichichuan practice was unexpectedly interrupted.

"Master Severus, five Aurors are demanding entrance to search the house for Dark Artefacts," announced Tuei, ears flat with disapproval.

"I see."

The reward ceremony's impact on public opinion had been more important than expected. The Minister was hoping to reverse the trend.

Severus got up to the front door. He used the magic peep-hole he had set up to see who was on the porch, and raised an eyebrow in surprise. He could only see the face of the Auror who was standing proudly in front of his door but this Auror was well-known to all Slytherins. He was rumoured to have an uncanny ability to find the most well disguised Dark Artefacts—Severus had to wonder if he used Sensing—and to be a close friend of Albus Dumbledore. Schooling his face, Severus opened his door and faced the infamous Auror Moody. The man was waiting patiently, two younger Aurors beside him—Frank Longbottom, three years older than Severus and newly inducted Auror, and a red hair who appeared to be in his early thirties. Severus bit back a groan at the sight of the horrible Potters twins standing behind the three Aurors with gleeful expressions.

"Good morning misters...?" said Severus calmly.

"Senior-Auror Moody, Auror Prewett, Junior-Auror Longbottom and Apprentice-Aurors Potter and Potter," answered Moody. "Are you Lord Severus Caspian?"

"I am."

"You are suspected of Dark Objects possession and forbidden uses of the Dark Arts. We are to search your entire house for such objects and traces of Dark uses."

"And if you don't find any?" asked Severus curiously.

"Then I will offer you my heartfelt apology," answered Moody wryly.

Severus nodded.
"Do you have a warrant?"

"Of course," answered Moody, handing Severus a parchment.

Severus noticed the older man appraising him. He hoped he was not impressed because Severus had asked for a warrant, it was one of the first lessons Jonathan and Evan had taught him: how to react to Auror's searches.
He read the document carefully, confirming their goal and the lawful perimeter of their actions.

"Please come in," said Severus, impassive even when Potter and Potter-bis sauntered in with a victorious smile on their faces.

He closed the door and went back to his armchair, observing the Aurors carefully as they looked around the dining room. Longbottom and Prewett went to the first floor while the Potter twins took great pleasure in opening cupboards and rifling through his library. As if he would be foolish enough to own forbidden books without authorisation or disguising them with spells so powerful they would never know he had them.
Severus was pleased to see Moody keep an eye on the two Marauders, sometimes reigning in their enthusiasm for the task at hand.

"Not offering us tea, Lord Caspian?" asked Auror Moody casually as he examined one of Severus' books and its associated authorisation of ownership.

"Why should I?" asked Severus as casually.

"Because it's the polite thing to do, Sna-Caspian," answered Potter-bis, using the patient tone usually reserved for dumb children.

He obviously had difficulties reconciling himself with the fact Severus now was Lord Caspian. It was so much harder to make Caspian sound derogatory than Snape or Snivellus.

"Why should I?" repeated Severus as patiently, lifting a perfectly arched eyebrow at him.

"Don't you want to be polite to the Aurors searching your home, Lord Caspian?" asked Potter with barely hidden contempt.

"Well. Considering two of those Aurors are in fact Auror-apprentices who bullied me throughout my Hogwarts years and attacked me on Sanctuary's ground one year ago, considering these same two certainly are at the origin of this search, no doubt using their father's political clout to obtain a warrant as well as his friendship with Auror Moody to partake in that search, I am not feeling very polite," replied Severus coldly.

He kept an eye on Auror Moody who was searching the room while keeping an ear on the conversation and smirked inside. The experienced Auror certainly possessed an impressive poker face, but Severus had lived among Goblins for four years. He knew the Potter twins would be severely interrogated once they left his home. Who knew, they might even face some kind of consequences. He could dream.

Any answer the Potters twins might have made were interrupted by an excited shout.

"Sir!" called out Longbottom from the kitchen. "We found a Thestral!"

Severus kept his face blank though he was torn between the urge to laugh and roll his eyes.

"If you would come with me Lord Caspian," asked Moody firmly but respectfully, inclining his head toward the kitchen.

"Of course Auror Moody," answered Severus politely.

The room was going to be cramped if they all tried to fit in. No doubt they were used to huge manors when they conducted these kinds of searches in Lords' Houses.

They managed to fit into the room, though the Potter menaces half-remained outside. Dhaal was currently at Saint-Bernard size, glaring at Longbottom and Prewett, a plate of chocolate cookies in front of him. Tuei´s stance was as disapproving, left hand on her hip, the right one holding her beloved wooden spoon.

"Why can I see it? I should not be able to see it!" exclaimed Potter.

"Thestrals are a protected species Sn-Caspian," said Potter-bis gleefully. "You cannot keep one as a pet to harvest precious potion ingredients. You cannot experiment to make it visible to anyone."

Dhaal slowly turned his head toward Potter-bis, raising his wings in an attack stance at the same time.

Severus wanted to huff at his Familiar's antics. The Thestral had chosen to be seen, no doubt to support Severus and prevent any unfortunate incidents. Dhaal still did not trust most Wizards.

Severus chose to ignore Potter-bis' remark and turned to Moody instead.
"Auror Moody, please meet Dhaal, my Familiar."

The Auror must have listened to the rumours better than his Apprentices because he showed no sign of surprise.

"Yíngjiē Dhaal," said the Auror, bowing lightly to the Thestral.

Severus felt impressed despite himself. He knew this man was dangerous, but he might be near Dumbledore's level.

"Come on, he can't have passed the Ritual. His wand was completely unstable in fifth year," muttered Potter-bis furiously.

"Shut up Sirius!" hissed Potter.

At least one of the Potters had the common sense to realise Auror Moody might be more impartial and less under their charms than they had believed. Lily may be rubbing off on him for a change.

"I assume Gringotts has records of you passing the Ritual, Lord Caspian," said Moody as he examined Dhaal.

His Familiar obligingly held his wings higher in the direction of the Marauders.

"Of course," answered Severus. "You may ask Hoardrock from clan Runsaus. He's my Gringotts representative."

For the first time, Moody showed an obvious sign of surprise.
"Hoardrock is your Gringotts representative."

"Do you know him?" asked Severus, curious.

"We collaborated on a few delicate matters," answered Moody with a smirk. "Hoardrock indeed."

He turned to his guys.
"Have you searched all the rooms?"

"Nothing on the first floor. The attic is locked. The basement is a study, a few drawers were locked as well." answered Prewett.

"We did not search the garden and the apparently empty grounds."

Moody looked at Severus inquiringly.

"The attic is my laboratory. Too dangerous to let anyone enter alone though I can accompany two of you there," explained Severus. "The locked drawers in my study contain my research. I can open them to the two of you as well, though if you wish to read their content, you will need another warrant. As for the garden and the grounds, knock yourselves out."

"Very well. Longbottom and I will accompany you to your lab," decided Moody. "Gideon?"

"I'll keep and eye on the newbies and teach them a few things," nodded Prewett.

"I will ensure they don't disturb anything," Sensed Dhaal to Severus.

Severus Sensed back his thanks then led Moody and Longbottom to the attic. They made a cursory tour, the Aurors careful not to touch anything. Severus Sensed no evidence of them looking for Dark Magic traces.

"How did you manage to create your House?" asked Longbottom idly.

"Why should I tell you?" replied Severus.

"Because I'm curious," answered Longbottom with a sheepish smile. "Passing the Ritual is not enough to create a House."

Severus considered the man thoughtfully. He had no obligation to answer, but cultivating a positive image with Aurors could not hurt.

"I can tell you I have allies who are not Wizards," finally answered Severus.

He watched as the curiosity in Longbottom's eyes increased at his answer, but the Auror did not press for a more detailed explanation.

They went back downstairs to find Prewett barely hiding his laugh. Dhaal had apparently decided to shadow circle around the two Potters, making them extremely uncomfortable.

"I didn't think the two of you were superstitious," drawled Moody.

"We are not!" exclaimed Potter forcefully. "But this one is Sn-Caspian's Familiar."

Moody held his gaze until the younger man looked away awkwardly. Then he turned toward Severus.

"We won't bother you any longer Lord Caspian. I apologise for disturbing you this fine morning."

"I appreciate you keeping the disturbance minimum, Auror Moody," answered Severus graciously.

The Aurors left quietly, even the two Marauders not making any fuss. Dhaal immediately came to perch on Severus' shoulder, rubbing his head against his neck. Severus petted him lightly then went to floo-call his grandfather. No doubt the group would use this visit to its advantage.
