AN: Chapter betaed by the awesome Miette and dstone12!
AN2: To Guest, I'm not cruel, here is a long February chapter ;)

Severus and Jonathan walked side by side, every sense on high alert as they walked away from Little Hangleton toward the place where one of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes was hidden. If they were walking a bit closer to each other than they usually would, nobody could blame them. They had not even reached the Horcrux yet the entire area gave off creepy vibes and seemed to encourage them to leave and never look back.

Severus once more checked his Occlumency and Sensing Shields but they were firmly in place. He decided against casting a Patronus to test if the feeling of unwelcoming would disappear. They had to be cautious as long as they did not know which kind of defences were in place. They could not take the risk of unknowingly triggering an alarm and have Lord Voldemort coming down on them.

They had walked less than ten minutes when they spotted the shack. It was in pitiful condition, windows broken and walls full of holes which let the cold wind enter. It was an unexpected choice for a place to hide a Horcrux, which might have been Lord Voldemort's reasoning.

"Are you feeling any pull from it?" asked Severus.

Jonathan took his time before answering.
"I don't think so. I can feel its presence but it's not trying to bring me to it."

"Alright. Ready to analyse the defences then?"

Jonathan nodded with determination.
"Let's do this."

They had a list to follow. A list of spells to cast and of magical instruments to use which would allow them to notice and identify most kinds of magical defences, from curses to magical constructions like golems or even magical creatures though Severus doubted Lord Voldemort had convinced a dragon to protect his Horcruxes. But best be thorough and safe rather than hasty and dead had said Augustus after they had learnt Inferi were guarding one of the Horcruxes. This was too important and too dangerous to mess up.

It took them an hour to ascertain there were no defences around the shack except for the spells which encouraged one to high-tail out of here and never come back. A few of them were coupled with illusions of horror creatures but their Occlumency shields allowed Jonathan and Severus not to be affected by them.
Even the shack entrance was not protected by more than those spells.

Severus felt unease settle in his stomach. It was too easy. He wished Dhaal was with them, but he had asked his Familiar to accompany Augustus and Regulus as they went to investigate another Horcrux hiding place. While Augustus was experienced and had been taught by Goblins, Severus felt there was too much he ignored about Sensing, Khorlos and Pahuus. Plus, Dhaal could come to him in seconds.

Shaking his head to himself, he looked at Jonathan, signalling they should enter.

Severus had truly expected a nasty surprise once they were inside but they were only met with the emptiness of the shack and the dust on its shaky floor. Once more, they ran through their list and found nothing, except for one dangerous spot beneath one of the shack's rotting floorboards-the Horcrux hiding place.

"It feels oddly anticlimactic," whispered Jonathan.

"We're not done yet," whispered back Severus. "We should use the tongs now."

Augustus, like many Purebloods, possessed tongs to use to manipulate dangerous magical artefacts. Indeed, some artefact could leech on one's core simply through physical contact. Hence the use of tongs which were made of Tourmaline and Fir-wood to prevent the artefact magic from propagating through the tongs to the hands of the one holding them.

Jonathan slowly used the tongs to lift up the floorboards hiding the Horcrux. A golden box shined softly underneath. It looked harmless. Severus felt the hairs on his arms rise.

Still using the tongs, Jonathan took the box out and put it on the floor.

"How are your shields?" asked Severus.

"Strong. You?"

"Same. Cast your Patronus before opening the box."

Jonathan nodded. His bright hummingbird came flying around his head while Severus' Nundu paced next to him.
They looked at each other, one last check they were as ready as they would ever be before Jonathan opened the box.

A gold ring inset with a black stone sat on a red velvet cushion.

Carefully, Severus cast his Sense on it. He felt the Horcrux try to grasp him but its touch glided on his various shields and his Patronus, unable to take a hold. There was a curse on the ring. A dark curse he had not encountered before. He focused his Sense on the curse, opening his outside Sensing shield to the curse while keeping it closed to the Horcrux. It was not easy as one part of the curse was linked to the Horcrux itself while the other was linked to the ring.

Burning. Corruption. Decay.

It was a curse which worked on different levels, physical but magical as well. Severus wanted to sigh. He hoped one of his companions knew this curse because lifting it without knowing the counter-curse was not going to be easy. And they had to lift it as it was linked to the Horcrux; if not, the curse would destroy Lord Voldemort once the reunification was complete.

"Severus!"

Severus looked up in alarm at Jonathan's tone. His friend was looking at the ring transfixed, his Patronus flickering as he seemed to struggle with an inner desire to approach the Horcrux.

Severus immediately sent his own Patronus at Jonathan while he accioed the tongs to him. His friend seemed to blink back from his trance as the Nundu put her paws on his shoulder, but his body remained rigid. Severus did not waste any time to close the box and put it back under the floorboards, keeping an eye on Jonathan as he acted. As soon as the ring was out of sight, Jonathan cast his Patronus again, the hummingbird flying brightly in circles around his left arm. Around his Mark.

"Are you alright?" asked Severus as he Sensed his friend over, glad to only find the usual faint wrongness coming from his Mark.

"A bit shaken, but I'm not having the urge to put the ring on my finger anymore so I think I'm good," answered Jonathan weakly.

"Let's go. We have nothing more to learn here."

Jonathan did not offer to try examining the Horcrux again, and after giving the place a last once over, Severus followed him outside the shack. They walked in silence until they reached the place they had first flow-travelled to when they had arrived hours ago.

"Still feeling fine?" asked Severus conversationally.

"Exhausted, but otherwise, I'm good," answered Jonathan honestly.

Severus was shocked to realise his friend sported dark circles under his eyes. The Horcrux had really done a number on him.

"I'll bring us to Prince Manor," offered Severus.

"Thank you," answered Jonathan with a small smile.

Augustus and Regulus were not back at the Manor yet when they arrived. Did they have trouble with the cave Horcrux? Severus had thought that with Kreacher' information, they would have an easier time than them. He Sensed his concern to Dhaal, but his Familiar answered with a fine-but-focusing feeling. They were still at the cave then.

Madeline ushered them to Augustus' office where a House-Elf brought them tea, scones and French cheeses. They ate in silence, Severus watching in wonder as Jonathan ate twice as much as he had. When they finished, Jonathan settled in his armchair to rest while Severus reviewed their expedition in his mind, looking for details he may have missed. His friend was sound asleep in minutes.

Augustus and Regulus finally joined them more than an hour later, both looking rather worse for wear. They settled in to eat immediately, and Severus was surprised to see they were eating as much as Jonathan had. Were they replenishing their core? Why would they have used up their inner Magic so much? Though they had cast numerous spells, most complex ones, in a short time, surely they knew how to pace themselves?
Looking at his companions' faces, Severus felt guilty as he realized they did not have his Apprenticeship knowledge to rely on. Jonathan had woken up and looked better though you would still wonder if he had slept the past night. Regulus fared better but also sported dark circles under his eyes. His grandfather was as regal as ever, however Severus now knew the older man well enough to notice the draw at the corner of his eyes.

"So. This was different," stated Regulus.

Jonathan snorted.
"You can say that again. And we had practised beforehand."

"I admit I did not expect it to be so draining," said Augustus. "It's been a long time since I last used so many powerful and complex spells, and it has taken its toll out of me. Though you two certainly had it worse, because of the Marks I believe."

"Oh yes," agreed Jonathan heartedly.

Regulus gave a small laugh.
"Severus is the only one who looks fresh as ever. I definitely want you to teach me what you learnt during your Apprenticeship."

"Finish your current studies first, then we'll see," admonished Severus lightly.

After much hesitation, Regulus had finally opted to follow in Jonathan's footsteps and now studied Law, Economics and Defence at Oxfarer.

"On the bright side, you'll be happy to know that Kreacher is faring far better. It helped him to go back there. And whatever Tuei did," said Regulus.

Severus was not too clear on what his House Elf had done to Kreacher either. He only knew she had helped him find himself, which had allowed Kreacher to break the obliviate spell cast on him by Lord Voldemort.
Once more Severus was impressed by House-Elves' Magic and grateful for their empathy, though he had almost failed to prevent Tuei's attack on Regulus when she had reacted to Kreacher's plight.

"I am always glad to see a lost House-Elf found," stated Augustus gravely. "They usually are the product of Wizards not understanding how crucial it is to give their House-elves the freedom of acting like they need to inside the boundaries of their contract, and of the House-Elves' empathy and desire to please their Master to the detriment of their own self. It is the role of the Kahu from their line to ensure the boundaries are respected and that House-Elves do not become... too Wizard for lack of a better wording. However Kahu are few as it requires a discipline, focus and resistance to the feelings and desires of others that is complicated to maintain for an empathic race like House Elves."

Tuei had omitted to tell him a few things. He could hardly blame her, she had already told him much and they had not known each other for long. And her being a Kahu was not something which could hurt him or his House.

"Seems to me the more House-Elves link themselves to Wizards, the less Kahu there would be," said Jonathan perplexed.

"I believe House-Elves possess a system to prevent the disappearance of Kahu but I cannot tell you more except that it exists," answered Augustus.

"Right, enough about House-Elves. Why don't you guys tell us what you found out about your Horcrux?" asked Regulus.

Severus looked at Jonathan, silently asking who should begin the retelling. With a small inclination of his head, his friend indicated he was letting Severus run the show.
His recounting was brief as there was not much to tell. The place's protection was lighter than expected considering Kreacher's information on the other Horcrux's hiding place. Though Severus had to admit the site's protection would have been quite effective were it not for their use of Occlumency and Patronus, and those were not the most common Wizards' skills to possess. The curse on the ring was nasty too but who would take a Horcrux in their hands without first protecting himself? Of course, they would have to know it was a Horcrux, but what other reason would a Wizard have to travel to this muggle hovel?

Severus turned to Jonathan expectantly as he explained how Jonathan had called for him while fighting the Horcrux's influence.

"It took me by surprise," stated Jonathan. "I expected the Horcrux to try to reach me through the Mark as we had discussed so I was really careful to keep my Patronus near me. It worked well at first, I could feel the Horcrux failing to pass it. And then, it's like something else... joined forces with the Horcrux. It began whispering of power it could grant me over death, how I would be able to get Father back if I only put the ring on my hand. It showed me Father briefly, as if I was seeing him behind a veil..."

Severus frowned. Another force joined with the Horcrux was worrisome. He dismissed the possibility of Lord Voldemort Sensing their presence and bolstering his Horcrux immediately. The Lord would have come himself, without this pretence. They had been alone in that shack, Severus was certain of it. Alone with the Horcrux imprisoned in the ring.

His grandfather seemed to have reached the same conclusion.
"If the ring was charmed or cursed on its own, the Horcrux could certainly feed on it."

Severus shook his head.
"I did not Sense anything other than the curse on the ring. I could not feel any other purpose from it, but I suppose the curse or the Horcrux could have hidden it."

"It might be easier if I showed you what I felt," suggested Jonathan.

Sharing memories usually was reserved for family – when you could afford a pensieve — or Aurors investigation and trials. Severus supposed both instances applied in their case.

They were lucky to be in Prince Manor instead of Severus' home. It was one item Severus would need to procure himself once he was financially secure enough. The Lupacem was earning him far more than he had ever imagined possible but he was already injecting an important part of it into his future manor.

Severus watched with fascination as Jonathan put his wand to his temple, took out a silver filament then put it into Augustus's pensieve.
How would that work without a wand? Would Severus hold his memory in his hand? How could he be certain not to drop it?

Regulus shoved Severus lightly and he almost blushed as he realised he had gotten lost in his mind long enough for his companions to notice.

"If everyone is ready, let's enter the pensieve," stated Augustus.

Contrary to what Severus had always heard about pensieves, he was not required to put his head into it to enter the memory. Copying his Grandfather, he simply touched its side with his finger and followed the pull of the memory.

Severus felt as if he was turning on himself, stomach churning in discomfort, until he was standing inside the memory, side by side with his three companions. They were inside the shack and Jonathan was using the pair of tongs to open the box containing the ring. Severus focused on Jonathan, feeling his friend's focus on maintaining his shield and Patronus. He felt when the Horcrux influence became strong enough to make his Patronus flicker. For a brief second, Severus saw Jonathan's father, ethereal, half-present and half-away. Immediately Jonathan called his name. The memory did not last more than a few minutes before they were back inside their meeting room.

"That was weird," summarised Regulus. "To see your father like this."

"We knew we would have questions," reminded Augustus. "This is only the first part of our reconnaissance."

Severus nodded.
"Shall we write the questions to address for each Horcrux?"

"Good idea," agreed Jonathan.

They spent the next thirty minutes listing every aspect they needed to research for the Horcrux from the shack.

Shack Horcrux (Ring):
Identify the curse on the ring
How to lift the curse?
Identify the other power boosting the Horcrux
How to prevent this other power from boosting the Horcrux?

"I think we have everything," finally said Regulus as he looked over their list, suppressing a yawn.

"Indeed," agreed Augustus. "Shall we move on to the other Horcrux? I know you are all tired, but we should do this while our impressions are still fresh."

"I agree, and I propose we use the pensieve too," added Regulus, already putting a strand of silver inside the pensieve.

Once more, Severus felt himself turn and turn and turn. When he opened his eyes, he was outside the cave, Jonathan looking around curiously while Augustus and Regulus watched their memory-selves.

The cave's protections were nothing like the ones on the shack, and Severus wanted to berate himself for not having gone himself. Kreacher had told them about the stone basin containing a potion which burned you inside and made you crave water while playing with your mind to make you witness twists of your own memories transformed into horror scenes. They had hypothesised the Horcrux would be inside the basin and had prepared accordingly. Kreacher had told them of the lake full of Inferi, and they had practised Fiendfyre, the one spell known to destroy inferi. It was also supposed to be hard to control but none of the Slytherin had truly found it so once they had understood how the spell worked. Naively, Severus had thought that knowing what to expect would make it easier on his Grandfather and Regulus.

He felt ill as he watched them carefully check each defence Lord Voldemort had put into place, not taking for granted that Kreacher's information was all they had to worry about.
A hidden door led into the cave. This door could only be opened if you paid your passage with one drop of blood. Of course, the door would keep in memory whose blood had been used to open the passage. They sidestepped the problem thanks to Kreacher and Dhaal who were able to bring them inside through flow-travel –apparently House-Elves flow-travelled too and the anti-apparation wards did not prevent it.
The inferi-filled lake had no means to cross it except an invisible boat which could only bear one passenger at a time. This water barrier could not be sidestepped using flow-travel because the flows went through the lake and there was a chance it would wake the inferi. Once aware, the inferi would follow any living beings until they had fed off them completely.
Severus watched with interest as his grandfather demonstrated impressive magic control and flew to the island while holding Regulus. He had never managed more than a few feet, though it had been before his Apprenticeship. It had to be a variation of the levitation spell applied to yourself, but to manage to orient and move yourself while levitating had to require great focus and precision. No doubt most Wizards would consider it too hard and frivolous to use when brooms and apparation existed.
Kreacher and Dhaal remained on the shore, ready to answer distress calls from Augustus and Regulus as well as from Jonathan and Severus, and with orders to bring one group to the location of the other if back-up was required despite their many precautions.
Then the memory focused on the stone basin and the sickly green potion which had traumatised the House-Elf. Augustus carefully took several samples in vials Severus had prepared for him. To their surprise, the level of liquid in the basin did not diminish.
And finally there was the Horcrux itself. A beautiful golden locket with Slytherin's blazon and a serpentine S in glittering green stones on its front. It did not appear to try to entice Regulus. The potion might be blocking it. They did not try to reach it with the tongs, wary of the unknown potion, but cast the detection spells which did not reveal any curse on it.
Regulus and Augustus reversed the entry process and flew and flow-travelled back to the exterior of the cave and then checked themselves for residues of any curses encountered.

Severus blinked as the memory ended and he was back in his armchair.

"It was really different from the shack," commented Jonathan.

"Yes. Lord Voldemort might not be completely himself anymore but he is a brilliant strategist and Wizard still," said Augustus wilfully.

"I am surprised you did not find any curse on the Horcrux," remarked Severus.

"I am surprised there was one on yours," countered Augustus. "To take the risk of the curse propagating through the Horcrux and then to your core… He had to be very sure of himself."

Severus cocked his head thoughtfully.
"You think the ring itself possesses a peculiarity which allowed Lord Voldemort to curse it without fearing for his Horcrux?"

Augustus nodded.
"Yes. It must have required great precision and control. Even then, I think it was hard enough he decided to augment the defences around the other Horcruxes rather than on them."

"Shall we focus on the questions we need to answer for this Horcrux?" suggested Regulus. "We still have much to do instead of trying to understand what happened in his mind, and we need to finish before we are dead on our feet."

Regulus was clearly resentful of the Lord's treatment of his House-Elf as well as his foolishness for taking risks which could endanger their cause.
Severus was puzzled at the Lord's treatment of Kreacher. The man had always been a strong advocate of all creatures' rights in the Wizarding World, saying the current Minister was treating them as subpar citizens when they were contributing to the flourishing of the Wizarding World. It was especially true for House Elves, so why had the Lord hurt the Elf so badly? He may have deemed it necessary to test his potion on a House Elf to be certain even they were not strong enough to counter the potions' effects, but it did not explain why he had left Kreacher alone in terrible pain. It was unnecessary and cruel. Dileas had not seemed mistreated. This decision made no sense. Unless he had expected the House Elf to die, taking his secrets with him. He may have specifically asked for a Black House Elf because most Blacks despised creatures. Was it one sign of the Marks growing influence on the Lord, or was it part of his true character? Was it another warning that the more time passed, the less they had chances to succeed?

"What do you think, Severus?" asked Jonathan, bringing his attention back to the current conversation.

His friend was looking better, his body having processed the food. Severus was glad to see his eyes had regained their usual brightness too.

Cave Horcrux (Locket):
Identify the potion
Identify its properties = why did the basin remain empty after Kreacher drank the potion but remained at level when filling up a vial?
Identify a means to empty the basin without drinking it: can it be vanished? Can it be poured on the ground?...neutralized?... frozen?..vaporized?
Identify/create antidote if previous option impossible
Learn how to "fly"
Learn an alternative to the Fiendfyre spell in case Inferi are woken up when the Horcrux is taken away or the basin emptied and they are so numerous Fiendfyre would exhaust our core

"I don't see anything to add," answered Severus after taking the time to go over the entire memory in his mind.

"We still don't know if we can retrieve the Horcruxes one at a time," remarked Jonathan.

"It would be easier," agreed Severus. "From what we've seen so far, I do not have the feeling Lord Voldemort would notice if we took his Horcruxes from their hiding place unless he went to check on them."

"Which is unlikely as he must not wish to attract attention to their existence," added Regulus.

"True," agreed Augustus. "From Severus' information, he may not even feel one of his Horcruxes die."

"So, if we can create boxes to contain the Horcruxes and cut them from outside Magic, we would be able to retrieve them one by one," said Jonathan excitedly.

"Yes though we need to create a box per Horcrux or we risk them reunifying together and I have no idea what the result would be," said Severus with a grimace.

"I agree we should not try to find out," concurred Augustus. "When do you think you will be able to work on it?"

"It would be easier if I were home, I have to be careful around Lucius. Probably at the beginning of January. I already have several ideas, I don't think it will be the hardest part of our plan," answered Severus.

"Good, it would be a pain to coordinate the retrievals otherwise," said Regulus. "Speaking of, have you learnt more on Lucius' Horcrux Severus?"

Severus shook his head.
"Nothing which will help us. It's in a heavily warded room in the Manor. I know it's there because I can Sense the link from Lucius' Mark go to the room but I cannot Sense anything from the room."

"It must be in the Dark artefacts room then," stated Augustus pensively. "We won't be able to enter without Lucius or Narcissa giving us access to it."

"That's what I fear. I asked Tuei to check if she could use her powers to enter but Lucius thought about this possibility and put a House-Elf on watch. Tuei assured me he was quite diligent," explained Severus.

"Guess we're putting this one on the side for now," said Jonathan wryly. "What about the last one?"

"I have a meeting at Hogwarts with Professor McGonagall to discuss a potential Apprenticeship. I will try to find out where it's kept," answered Severus.

"On your own?" asked Jonathan surprised.

Severus shrugged.
"Bringing one of you would be suspicious. And Dhaal will be with me."

"How did you convince McGonagall to give you an interview for an Apprenticeship with her?" asked Regulus incredulously. "I seem to remember Transfiguration was not your strongest forte."

"According to my Master, who contacted her at the beginning of my Apprenticeship, she considers me Master grade II potential," admitted Severus, still wondering if she was right.

Regulus snorted.
"You really don't do things by half Severus."

"You must be careful not to burn any bridge," warned Severus' Grandfather.

"I know."

Severus grimaced.
"I accepted a meeting with the Headmaster on the same day. He has wanted to meet since the Lupacem was patented."

"Better you than me," said Regulus, offering Severus a commiserating pat on the shoulder.

"How will you manage to look for the Horcrux?" asked Jonathan. "Dumbledore will be watching your every move..."

It was Severus' main concern and he was still pondering how to best proceed as he walked the path from Hogsmead to Hogwarts.
He could not go roaming the school pretending he was fondly remembering his Hogwarts years. He could not pretend to visit one of the Slytherin students and casually walk through Hogwarts with them unless he wanted to raise questions from Lord Voldemort and the group. He knew he was already walking a thin line not telling them beforehand of his visit. There would be questions at the next meeting. But he had not wanted to take the risk of being asked to do something which would endanger his reconnaissance for the Horcrux.

Severus felt Dhaal still as they passed the wards which delineated Hogwarts territory.

"The flows are… different…" Sensed Dhaal.

"What do you mean?" asked Severus as he focused on his Sense.

The flows felt numerous and strong.

"I cannot use them like I should," answered his Familiar. "Watch."

The Thestral began walking a large circle around Severus, then increased his speed until he was fully galloping. Severus Sensed as he tried and failed to grab a flow to flow-travel time and again.
Intrigued, Severus tried it himself. No matter the flow he tried to grab, it glided from his grasp as soon as he tried to move along it.

"It must be the anti-apparation wards," reasoned Severus. "They must be stronger than those in the cave."

He was glad Dhaal had noticed. He would need to take it into account when he planned for the Horcrux retrieval. When he found it.

Expanding his Sense toward the castle, Severus felt his eyes widened as he felt Hogwarts. She was a nexus. A huge impressive nexus full of Magic flows and creatures. Feeling giddy, Severus expanded his Sense, following the flows as they led him from one creature to another. Dhaal was beside him, enjoying the incredible feeling of Magic singing around them, commenting on the creatures they passed. Even in Bǎo, Severus had never felt like he could lose himself and drown in Magic.

As they came closer to the castle, Severus frowned. Amidst the euphoria of Magic, he Sensed something... not right. It was not a wrongness akin to Voldemort's. Severus shuddered at the thought of the Lord's Horcrux corrupting a nexus of Hogwarts' size, but he could not imagine the various existing protections would allow it – those he was Sensing were impressive and they certainly were only the tip of the iceberg.
Severus tried to take a step back from the giddiness of so much Magic coursing around him and focus on Sensing the nexus' goal. He struggled to make abstraction of all the spells and protections he could reach through the Magic flows which all had their minor purposes to truly find Hogwarts'. Severus had to ask Dhaal for help to filter all the information he was receiving through Sensing to finally reach the huge feelings present in the background.

To shelter. To punish. To nurture. To belittle. To radiate. To shut down.

The dichotomy was disturbing. How could Hogwarts possess opposite—no, opposing—goals?
Frowning to himself, Severus once more focused on Sensing the nexus. He inhaled sharply as he realised the nexus' flows seemed to be cut in two. The largest part gave off the feeling of protection and flourishing. The smaller part felt rebellious and angry. The flows were still joined at the nexus' source, however Severus felt his alarm grow as he suddenly noticed the faint thread which was only linked to the smaller flow. The faint thread which felt like a Mark. What disturbed Severus the most was that while he could Sense this thread now that he had noticed it, he could not feel its origin precisely. It was in Hogwarts but he could not find any specific direction to get closer to it.

"Do try not to walk into the walls."

Severus huffed at Dhaal's dry warning. It had been a long time since he was so immersed in Sensing that he stopped paying attention to his surroundings.
His Familiar only snickered, then gently rubbed his head in Severus' neck.

"Will you show yourself today?"

"I want to meet your Hagrid so yes. I'd rather not meet Dumbledore but I may not have the choice if his Familiar is a Phoenix."

"You practised with Kea how to hide the bond presence on your side. Why would it be different with a Phoenix?"

"Kea said their Magic is different from ours as they have fire instead of earth. She said he might have tricks I have never seen."

"You should remain outside then. Explore the grounds," suggested Severus.

"The forbidden forest sounds interesting."

Severus almost rolled his eyes. Dhaal was worse than a kid.
"Don't get eaten."

"I'll scream if I need help," answered Dhaal as he jumped from Severus' shoulder.

Severus could feel him smirk through their bond. Shaking his head to himself, he pulled his attention back on his coming meetings and knocked at the castle lodge.
Filch answered him. He was brusque but not rude, and Severus wondered as he already had when he was younger why a squib would choose to work and live in a school full of magical children.

The caretaker led him to Professor McGonagall's office and knocked smartly.

Professor McGonagall answered the door quickly, clearly expecting them.
"Thank you for bringing Lord Caspian to me, Argus."

Filch nodded sharply then left without another word.

"Welcome Lord Caspian," said the Professor as she assessed Severus, a glint of surprise and appreciation in her eyes.

"Thank you for meeting with me Professor," answered Severus with a light bow.

"Please sit down," invited McGonagall, gesturing to the comfortable looking armchair in front of her desk as she settled down on the other side.

"May I offer you some coffee or a cup of tea?"

"I would appreciate a coffee," accepted Severus with a smile to hide his unease at speaking to his past instructor on an equal footing.

"So do I mid-morning. I usually reserve tea for after five o'clock" said the Professor smiling back before calling for a House Elf.

Once they were both settled with a cup in hand, McGonagall spoke up.
"I must admit you far exceeded my expectations Lord Caspian."

Severus hid a wince. He was having a hard time accepting the lordship title, except when rubbing it in to those who had once thought themselves better than him.

"Please call me Severus."

"Then you must call me Minerva," replied the Professor.

"I don't know if I can," admitted Severus.

"You will get used to it quickly if I take you as an Apprentice. As important as it is to respect proper boundaries, the use of titles gets tiresome when you are working side by side for hours," said McGon-Minerva, eyes sparkling though the rest of her face was stern.

"This is one of the points we need to discuss," said Severus. "When you first offered me this Apprenticeship, I had no idea of the responsibilities I would hold today. While I can afford to study under you today thanks to the Lupacem, I am now a Head of House. Even if my House only consists of myself, I have duties and a Lordship title I am wholly unprepared for. I am required to learn how to accomplish those duties and I am afraid it will occupy me for some time."

McGonag- Minerva nodded.
"I agree, which is why we are lucky I never take on full Apprentices, even less first-time Apprentices as my schedule does not allow for the time I would require to spend with them."

She tapped her chin thoughtfully before speaking again.
"What I have in mind might not exactly be an Apprenticeship. Your difficulties during your first years as well as your impressive results for your OWLs and NEWTs reminded me of what I had first wanted to implement when I took my post at Hogwarts. However, I did not have enough hours in the week to make it work unless I wanted to exhaust myself in six months. The first two years are crucial in most fields, but especially so in Transfiguration. I would like to divide the students in small groups to be able to spend more time on both theory and practice depending on their needs. I am hoping to share the first and second years between you and I. We would of course alternate the groups."

Severus felt his blood drain from his face as his mind processed the Professor's words. She wanted him to teach ? to students? Did she remember who she was speaking to?

"I thought I was only supposed to learn," finally said Severus faintly.

She had the nerve to laugh.
"Teaching will make you learn. And of course, I would like us to spend an afternoon a week working and discussing projects together. It's the way my NEWTs classes are scheduled so I can work one on one with all my students on their project and allow them to grow in the Transfiguration branch they are the most interested in."

He was going to learn by teaching. Small, impressionable children. Children who would not realise if he messed up. Children who would certainly cry if he lost his patience and was too short with them. He had made some of his peers cry when he was a third year! This was not what an Apprenticeship was supposed to entail.

Concern coming from his bond with Dhaal forced him to throttle his budding panic and put it far behind his Occlumency walls for later examination.
He assured his Familiar he was fine and focused on Professor McGonagall who looked far too amused by his reaction. All the goblin training in the world could not help him with the prospect of teaching.

"How much time would I need to give to teaching?" asked Severus, putting himself together as the Master he was supposed to be .

This arrangement would be a good pretext to spend time in Hogwarts and make it easier to retrieve the Horcrux once he knew its exact location.

"I was thinking of one day per week. Two hours per group, with one group per House. Meaning you would have the first years one week, the second years the other."

Severus frowned.
"Once a week seems practical. However I would rather have mixed groups of the same size for each year. You could group together students with the same weaknesses for example."

Minerva leaned back in her seat, tapping her finger on her lips as she pondered his unexpected proposal.

Severus wondered if she was thinking about the Headmaster's reaction to his request.

"It's a good idea," she finally answered. "I can make it happen. Of course, I will first need to assess your capacities on supervising practice and their subsequent grading as you will be required to mark the practice sessions."

He could do this. The first and second years were ten years younger than him. They would not notice his youth, especially if he dressed for the part. The sixth and seventh years might remember him, but he would not interact with them. Plus, he now was Lord Caspian so they should not give him any grief.
Severus refrained a sigh of relief that Nymphéa still had three years left before beginning Hogwarts. He should be done with Transfiguration by then. He could not imagine her managing to respect the teacher-student boundaries when she knew him as Uncle Severus. The last time her family had visited Malfoy manor, she had pestered Severus until he taught her the coloured light-balls spell which she had managed wandlessly perfectly after a few tries. He may have begun teaching her how to Sense too, but only outside Magic. Andromeda had noticed he was teaching her daughter Magic but she had not seemed to disapprove, only thoughtful. He would soon need to decide if he would teach Nymphéa Taichichuan.

"Which kind of projects do you have in mind for myself?" asked Severus, curious.

"I would like you to propose one," answered Minerva. "Not right now," she immediately clarified. "I will give you subscriptions to several Transfiguration publications. You will choose two per week to study and then we'll discuss the theory as well as the concrete interest behind these publications. These discussions should give you ideas for your project that we will, of course, fully define together. I will give you between two and four months to find your project subject."

Between his Horcrux problem, Lucius tutoring him on the Head of House duties and this Apprenticeship, Severus was going to have his plate full.
"When do I begin?"

The smile she gave him was genuine. He still could not believe she truly wanted him as an Apprentice.

"The first years' December practical tests are tomorrow, the second year's next week, just before the Christmas holidays. I would like you to be present at one of them. We will discuss their performances and compare our analysis of their capacities as well as the grades you would have given them. If you pass this test, I would like you to begin in January."

The sooner the better so he could work on getting the Horcrux out.

"Tomorrow would be perfect," answered Severus, offering her a genuinely excited smile.

"I do not expect any more duties from you, neither detention nor patrolling. However be warned, Albus will no doubt ask you to be present for lunch on your teaching day."

Severus refrained a grimace. To eat a few feet away from the Headmaster among his past professors while being observed by the entire student population. Give him an enraged Werewolf any day.

"It won't be my favourite part of the day but I think I can manage," answered Severus evenly.

She laughed.
"I have no doubt you can."

She shook her head, turning serious.
"Now, the Headmaster warned me repeatedly to make sure you did not miss your appointment with him and I believe we are already ten minutes late."

Severus wanted to roll his eyes. He had accepted the meeting, he was not going to run away to avoid it, especially when he was going to spend a significant amount of time in Hogwarts during the next months.

"Then we shall not make him wait any longer," he said instead, rising from his seat and gesturing to Mc-Minerva to lead the way.

Severus was surprised at the pleasure he felt walking the castle corridors. Despite her faults, Hogwarts had been home for five years.

Professor McGonagall – how could he call her Minerva? – did not make small talk but the silence between them was comfortable. He took the opportunity to extend his Sense and focus on the Horcrux location, but to no avail. It was in Hogwarts, but Severus was unable to pinpoint a direction to follow. It felt as if it was outside of Severus' range of perception. He did not get to try to push himself as he suddenly Sensed a disturbance. The faintest whiff of anger touched his Sense. Severus threw up a light shield, deftly blocking the water bomb Peeves had thrown at him.

"Peeves!" shouted McGonagall. "Stop this instant. Lord Caspian will soon be part of Hogwarts' staff."

The spirit only cackled, turning to look at them upside down.
"My, My. Lord Caspian is it? Isn't this Lordship a bit young to teach in our august establishment?"

"Peeves, you will be respectful or I will call the Bloody Baron!" threatened the Professor.

The Bloody Baron! He might be able to help Severus find the Horcrux. The ghost was bound to be loyal to both Slytherin and the school. Severus might be able to convince him to help without warning the Headmaster.

Peeves blew them a raspberry before disappearing in a flash, his snickers echoing behind his trail.

McGonagall – Minerva sighed.
"Peeve is troublesome, but he is useful. He's the representation of the students' feelings. We always keep an eye on him because when Peeves gets out of hand, the students are getting in more trouble than usual."

Severus frowned. He had not had much time to Sense Peeves over, but he was pretty sure he represented the angry-resentful part of the nexus.
"Are you certain?"

He had not meant to sound so doubtful, and the Professor raised an unimpressed eyebrow at him.

"This is how we knew when to give more homework in your time. He reflected the conflict between the Houses."

It felt more like Peeves had been the part of Hogwarts who punished the troublemakers who prevented Hogwarts from accomplishing her goals of sheltering and nurturing. Severus would use his time in Hogwarts to confirm his suspicions.

They reached the gargoyle guarding the stairs leading to the Headmaster's office entrance all too soon. Minerva gave him an apologetic glance at the gargoyle' password – lemon sorbet, really?– then led the way up the stairs. The office door opened without her even knocking, which Severus found to be a rude way to show the Headmaster was spying on their approach though it might impress muggleborn students.

"Good morning, Lord Caspian," welcomed Dumbledore, eyes sparkling as he stood up to greet them, his dresses as horrendous as ever in a red-orange-yellow pattern which was nowhere as flattering as it was on his Phoenix.

Said Familiar was crooning quietly on his nest as he studied Severus with apparent curiosity. Could he Sense his bond with Dhaal?

"Thank you Minerva for accompanying him."

His voice was warm but the dismissal was clear. McGonagall only looked at him pointedly, earning a sheepish smile to Severus' surprise.

"It was my pleasure. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow Severus," said Minerva with a smile.

"So do I. Thank you once more for offering me this opportunity, Minerva," answered Severus with a light bow.

"Albus, I will see you at lunch."

This was a threat but what did it convey exactly?

McGonagall and Dumbledore locked eyes in silent argument before he nodded.

"So will you, Minerva."

She left, closing the door smartly behind her.

"Please have a seat. Do you mind if I call you Severus?" asked Dumbledore. "I seem to understand you will spend enough time among us that formalities will get tiring."

Of course I do. I want you to call me Lord Caspian so you have to admit how great Slytherins are.

"You're right Headmaster, it would be more convenient than Lord or Master Caspian," answered Severus gracefully.

"And please call me Albus," added the Headmaster, sporting a benign smile Severus wanted to rip from his face.

"I am not sure I can manage," said Severus instead. "Even calling Professor McGonagall Minerva is a challenge."

"I am sure it will come in time my boy," chuckled Dumbledore. "Now, before we begin on a serious matter, I would like to thank you for accepting this meeting."

"I could not come to Hogwarts without seeing you, Headmaster," answered Severus truthfully.

He had no desire to be banished from the castle because he had spurned her Headmaster. He had a Horcrux to retrieve.

"My schedule has been hectic since earning my Masteries. As you can imagine, the Lupacem patent as well as my new position as Head of House have kept me busy these past weeks," continued Severus.

"Yes, four Masteries and the creation of a new House is quite remarkable for someone so young," praised Dumbledore. "I admit I was surprised as I remember you struggling with your practicals during fifth year."

The smile was still present but his eyes had lost their sparks.

"I think I needed a change of air. Hogwarts was not what I needed anymore," answered Severus, looking at him straight in the eye.

There was no brush against his mind. Not even the breeze of an attempt against his shields.

"But you've come back now," pointed out the Headmaster.

"Only a fool would refuse to study Transfiguration under Professor McGonagall," replied Severus.

"Even though it requires you to teach?" asked Dumbledore.

The access to the Horcrux was worth it.

"Professor McGonagall assured me I would learn much by teaching others," answered Severus.

"Would you consider doing the same for the potion class?"

He could not have heard that right.

"I'm sorry, I think I misunderstood your question," said Severus, careful to keep his tone neutral.

"Professor Slughorn has expressed his desire to retire in a couple of years. I wish to find his replacement as soon as possible to ensure there is no loss of knowledge once Horace has left us. With your exceptional skills in Potions and Herbology, you are the perfect candidate. Of course, any teaching position would assure you the complete access to Hogwarts greenhouses and potions ingredients as well as a fund for your research projects."

The man had the audacity to smile after making his ridiculous proposition. It was one thing to teach the younger years one day a week in exchange of being taught by a renown Master. But to teach because it would be his day-to-day job? Under Dumbledore's orders? Severus wanted to laugh in his face, even though he gave the Headmaster points for trying to sweeten the deal. In another life, without the Lupacem and the money it had brought him, he might have stopped to at least think about it.

"This is quite the offer Headmaster," finally said Severus after pushing his anger and disgust deep behind his shields and taking the time to formulate his answer in the hope of making it look like he was weighing his options. "However I do not feel qualified for the position today. I am still a student myself, barely older than the seventh years. "

"You diminish your accomplishment my boy," replied Dumbledore. "Horace praises you everyday, no-one is your equal in potions according to him."

"Which is also a problem," retorted Severus. "I am a natural at potions. It means I cannot fathom most of the difficulties many students have encountered which will make it difficult to teach and have patience with my students, even if they demonstrate a willingness to learn. We both know many parents consider potions as a lesser art and their attitude is reflected in their offspring."

"While you won't have this problem with Transfiguration as you struggled during your first years. I understand," said Dumbledore, nodding thoughtfully. "I would still like you to keep my offer in mind. You see, Horace's successor will also take on the mantle of Head of House of Slytherin."

This was supposed to be the Headmaster's ultimate argument. An opportunity for Severus to pass on Lord Voldemort's ideas among young impressive minds.
Clearly, Dumbledore was hoping to use Severus, the how and why, however, were quite nebulous. Severus felt dread descend in his stomach as he realised he would have to tell the group of the Headmaster's proposal. Lord Voldemort would be suspicious if he learnt of it from someone else. It was an opportunity after all. An opportunity Lord Voldemort might tell him to seize with both hands.

"The workload would be heavy for one person," remarked Severus. "My Head of House duties plus the Apprenticeship to Professor McGonagall plus teaching the younger years potions, learning the duties of Slytherin Head of House plus working on projects..."

"You do not need to give me your answer right now, Severus. I simply want to avoid offering the job of Slytherin Head of House to a non-Slytherin," stated Dumbledore with a pleased twinkle. "Let's see how the first months of your Apprenticeship go and then... "

The old coot thought Severus was taking the bait. As if. He only needed a battle plan to convince the group it would be a waste of his capacities to accept the offer. However, he would not let the other remark pass unnoticed.

"Thank you Headmaster. I must say I find it very sad that the only member of the staff who once belonged to Slytherin is its Head of House. If I'm not mistaken, you have four Gryffindors, five Ravenclaws and four Hufflepuffs. It hardly seems fair."

Severus had done his homework before coming. Ravenclaws were numerous with posts of medium importance as there was Vector who taught Arithmancy, Flitwick who taught Charms and was Head of House, Sinistra who taught Astronomy, Longview who taught Divination, and Babbling who taught Ancient runes. Hufflepuffs occupied the less attractive posts with Professor Sprout teaching Herbology in addition to her Head of House duties, Pomfrey was the Nurse, Kettleburn taught Care of magical creatures, and Hominum made a fool of himself teaching Muggle study. On the contrary, the Gryffindors were only three but held both the post of Headmaster and Assistant Headmaster, respectively Dumbledore and McGonagall, the later teaching the prestigious Transfiguration courses, and the Gamekeeper post with Hagrid which was far more strategic than one could think. Indeed, he was the one in contact with most of the other magic beings and creatures who either lived or crossed through Hogwarts. And then one lone Slytherin teaching the dangerous and underrated Art of potions-making, with the addition of Head of Houses duties. Severus did not count the Defence against the Dark Arts Professor who changed every year.

"Hmm, something you could argue as the Head of Slytherin and part of Hogwarts' primary staff," answered Dumbledore genially though his eyes held a hint of ice.

Severus' mind could not help but flashback to that night. Dumbledore's eyes had been as cold then. Ice blue cold like the lightning linking his wand and Dumbledore's as the Oath settled.
Severus repressed a frown. Dumbledore had used a wand that night. When he had a Familiar. Could they be wrong about Fawkes? Why would a Phoenix live in the Headmaster's office if he was not his Familiar?

Severus forced his mind back to the moment at hand, using the slightest bit of Occlumency to keep his voice neutral.

"I will keep all of your arguments in mind, Headmaster. Now if you don't mind, I promised Hagrid I would have lunch with him."

"Of course Severus. Hagrid is one of your most fervent admirers, along with Mrs Potter. I must say the protection you afforded the Evans family was truly remarkable."

"As someone who grew up in the muggle world, I can tell you Magic itself is a remarkable Art," replied Severus truthfully though he had to keep his Occlumency shields tight not to show his irritation at the man.

He was surprised by a sudden thrill coming from the phoenix.

"Fawkes agrees with you, and so do I. Magic is a wonder the entire world would benefit from."

Severus doubted Muggles would overly appreciate it. However, it gave him an opening to confirm Fawkes' relationship with Dumbledore, so he nodded agreeably.

"Magic offers precious gifts to those who believe in it. I'm certain you cannot imagine a world without your Familiar, as I cannot imagine one without mine."

For the first time in Severus' life, Dumbledore looked at him with genuine approval.

"A world without Fawkes would certainly be less colourful."

The Phoenix echoed the Headmaster's words with a series of happy chirps.

Severus had no doubt left, Fawkes was the Headmaster's Familiar. Was the older man using a wand in the hope of confusing other Wizards? He would need to ask for his grandfather's opinion.

He bowed slightly.
"I wish you a good day, Headmaster."

"Thank you, Severus. I am looking forward to seeing more of you."

Severus grimaced inside but kept his face blank as he walked down the stairs. That was ominous.

Severus did not linger as he doubted he could find out the Horcrux location precisely enough through Sensing alone and he was unwilling to raise Dumbledore's suspicion more than it already was around Slytherins. He made his way to the castle grounds quickly, smiling when he caught sight of Hagrid already fawning over Dhaal. The Theastral had assumed his normal size and Severus was surprised to see his Familiar had reached his adult size without him noticing. His wings and overall musculature were fully developed in contrast to the gangly allure which had characterised Dhaal when they had left Uusi.

"Severus! I almost didn't recognise you!" boomed Hagrid as he heartily clapped Severus in the back – Severus silently thanked Richtigk for the hours passed practising resisting surprised assaults as they were the only reason he remained on his feet.

"You look better than the last time I saw you lad."

Severus smiled.
"It's been almost five years Hagrid."

"That it has. Please come in, the stew is almost done," said the Half-Giant as he led Severus inside his hut, Dhaal following easily as the hut was conceived for bigger beings than him. "I heard you've done well for yourself, becoming a multiple Master."

Severus smiled sheepishly as he sat down on one of the huge stools across Hagrid's fire, the gamekeeper stirring a big wooden spoon into a cauldron which smelled delicious.
"Thank you for your article in the quibbler about Dhaal. As you can see, he has been looking forward to meeting you ever since."

"He's a beautiful specimen, especially with his particular colouration due to the Ritual. I often dreamed of my Familiar when I was little, even though Ollivanders' wands are said not to allow it. He would have been a dragon," confided Hagrid wistfully.

"Did you fail the tests to take the Ritual?" asked Severus, suddenly curious. He could not remember ever seeing Hagrid perform Magic but he had never spent more than a few hours with him.

The Big man looked down at his feet, his usually cheerful face suddenly full of sorrow.
"They broke my wand."

What? Wand breaking was reserved to serious offences, what could have Hagrid done to deserve this?

"I don't understand Hagrid. What happened?"

"You've not heard the story? I thought every Slytherin knew of the days the chamber had opened," answered Hagrid bitterly as he came to sit beside Severus.

"Are you speaking of Slytherin's supposed secret chamber?" asked Severus "You realise it's a myth Hagrid!"

"It's not," stated the Half-Giant firmly. "It opened during my third year in Hogwarts. One girl was killed. They accused me because of Aragog, even though he would barely hurt a fly, and only to eat it! The girl had died on the spot, there were no marks on her! And there was no proof but it was my word against Riddle's and he was the perfect prefect, all Slytherin and smooth talker..."

Severus felt his mind churn as he tried to make sense of Hagrid's words.

"Who was this Aragog? Are you saying they accused you of helping him murder the girl?" asked Severus, incredulous.

"No! Aragog was my pet. He may not have been on the list of allowed pets but he wasn't dangerous. But Riddle convinced the officials that Aragog was the one who had killed the girl. I released him into the forbidden forest before they could capture and kill him, but they expelled me from Hogwarts and broke my wand. I was lucky Professor Dumbledore believed me and convinced Headmaster Dippet to hire me as the gamekeeper. A great man Dumbledore," concluded Hagrid.

Severus was horrified. To break Hagrid's wand at such a young age without more evidence than the word of a prefect…

"Did you have a trial Hagrid?" he asked seriously.

The Half-Giant shook his head.

"Only the Minister, two officials and Headmaster Dippet were present when they listened to Riddle and I, and then carried out my punishment. I didn't even realise what they were going to do until they broke my wand and told me I could never possess another. As if I would have betrayed my dragon."

It sounded as if Hagrid had already possessed a deep bound with his wand. Severus pushed back his anger, focusing on understanding everything that had happened.

"Where were your parents? Could they not hire a lawyer for you? And your Head of House? You were a child!"

"My Ma went back to her clan when I was three. Da died during my second year. I spent the summer between my second and third year with Ma's clan but the only one who liked me was my little half-brother. I had no one to call, and Professor Dumbledore was away when they came for me."

Severus felt his heart break. Dumbledore was useless as usual. Hagrid could have used a Mentor too.

"What about your clan? They must have possessed representatives who could have defended you?"

Hagrid shrugged.

"I don't know much about the clan and their structure. I only lived with them a summer, and one or two weeks a year since then. But they really don't like Wizards."

Severus hid a frown. The Giants from Kyirong could not be an exception.

"Hagrid, I'm not an expert on Giants society but I know that in Kyirong, one of the Sanctuaries, a Giant sits on the council among several other magic beings. If you wish to, I can contact him and arrange for a meeting with him so you can explore your options and try to appeal for another trial and the right to possess another wand. And of course, I need to ask Lucius for a lawyer, you need to work on the two fronts and-"

Severus was unprepared for the sudden crushing of his ribs under Hagrid's wet hug.

"Thank you Severus. I always knew you had a big heart. You don't care that I am dim Half-breed Hagrid," sniffled the Half-Giant.

Severus awkwardly patted him on the back before calling Dhaal for help. His Familiar gently inserted himself between them, enticing Hagrid to pet him while Severus recovered his breath.

"He's hurting."

Severus was surprised as his Familiar Spoke-Sensed to him, anger and protectiveness radiating from him.

"I know, but except getting help with the Giants and Lucius' lawyer, I don't-"

"Severus, his Khorlo is hurting," repeated Dhaal patiently.

Trusting his Familiar's word, Severus spoke quietly.

"Hagrid, would you allow me to look at your core?"

"Look at my core?" repeated Hagrid perplexed.

"Yes. Breaking your wand, especially as young as you were, with a bond already formed between it and you… There are high chances your core was damaged. I would like to check if it healed properly," explained Severus.

Severus feared for one moment that the big man would hug him again but he only nodded with a teary smile.
Severus focused on Hagrid's core, unsurprised when he encountered a light blurry protection. He was Half-Giant after all.

"Please Hagrid, I need you to relax and focus on trusting me."

Severus Sensed the moment the gamekeeper relaxed, his Khorlos finally visible though Sensing. Mudhara was wide, its energy bleeding through a link which led somewhere inside Hagrid's hut. Hagrid's other Khorlos were shut firmly except for Anāhata which was barely cracked.

"Did you keep part of your wand Hagrid?" asked Severus gently.

It usually was forbidden but then, the whole business smelt less than legal to him.

Hagrid fiddled with his hands, managing to look up at Severus under his bushy hair while towering over him.

"I may have picked up the bits. I mean, they went away without taking them and I could not leave them alone… It almost was my dragon..."

"It's alright Hagrid," reassured Severus "I won't tell if you don't."

He needed to contact Maverick. Maybe Wirkrund too. Severus did not doubt that Hagrid would be cleared. Before bonding with another wand, they would need to heal his Khorlos as well as work on incorporating his previous wand into the new one.
But he could not say so to Hagrid until he was certain the possibility was more than hypothesis.

"Enough with all this Severus. Tell me more of what you've done during your Apprentice years."

They spoke amiably during the entire lunch, switching back and forth between Severus' time in Kyirong and Hagrid's passion for savage creatures. The Half-Giant was fascinated by Severus' description of the Sanctuary and the peaceful coexistence of the various species.

"I heard Hogwarts had signed an agreement with Kyirong. Beginning next year, all students will spend a week within the Sanctuary to get acquainted with the other species. The werewolf students will also spend the full moon day over there and benefit from tutoring from the pack. Professor McGonagall is the one who arranged it," said Hagrid excitedly.

To be exact, Sthir had reached out to McGonagall on Severus and Yasha's suggestion, but Hagrid had no means to know it.

"It reminds me, Mrs Lovegood would love to interview you about your research. She was very curious to know how you had gotten your idea for the Lupacem and your method of research. She's a very clever lady, Xenophilius is a lucky man. I promised her I would ask you to contact her," said Hagrid with a huge smile.

Severus had no difficulty answering that he would contact her as her research intrigued him too.

The rest of his visit passed on quickly without any more emotional revelation, except for Severus and Dhaal's introduction to the infamous Aragog.

"You must meet Aragog now that Dhaal will be coming to Hogwarts regularly! He can be a bit territorial so it's always best that I introduce him to his new friends," explained Hagrid as he led them through the forbidden forest.

Severus felt dread as he tried to imagine the kind of creature which could require an introduction. Fang was Hagrid's authorised pet and he had been scary enough when Severus had not known he was a big cuddly fluffy pet.

"No matter what it is, I can take it."

"Don't be arrogant Dhaal. There is always someone bigger or more powerful. Even a weak opponent can get in a lucky shot," admonished Severus.

His familiar huffed but sent a sheepish apology through their bond.

Severus felt his hair raised on the back of his neck as he Sensed a huge magic presence ahead. Dhaal's posture suddenly went on alert, his wings at ready. Hagrid kept speaking cheerfully unconcerned.

Ssschkksssskkkk.

Severus had to restrain himself not to attack the huge Acromantula who jumped in front of him, its two front black hairy legs threatening him. It was as big as Dhaal. Except when his Familiar chose to increase his size to stand between Severus and the threat, his wings pointed at the enemy, ready to unleash his Scream.

"Aragog! Stop playing with Dhaal and Severus!" exclaimed Hagrid as he put the Acromantula's left front leg down with his hand. "They are friends."

Severus watched with wonder as the Acromantula and Hagrid held a silent conversation, the spider occasionally letting out a hiss or a clack of its pincers as his eight eyes focused on the Half-Giant. Dhaal relaxed marginally but remained watchful.

While he kept an eye on the beast movement, Severus dug inside his mind to remember all he knew about Acromantulas. They lived in colonies, led by the eldest spider who could reach a size of fifteen feet, the size of Acromantulas increasing with age. Their fangs could produce two kinds of poison, a highly toxic and lethal one which they used on predators, another one who had paralysing properties which they used on their prey. They were among the species who appreciated the taste of human flesh. Which meant if it had killed the girl during Hagrid's third year, it would have at least taken a bite. In the event it had resisted eating it, there would still have been puncture marks and traces of its poison in her blood.

Severus wanted to shake his head at the idiocy of those Ministry's officials. They had ignored the facts. Plus, who could believe Slytherin would use an Acromantula to guard his secret lair? He was a Parseltongue and would not have trusted any other creature than a snake. What kind of snake could kill without leaving any mark? It reminded him of an old story… a woman with snakes for hair…

"Welcome Dhaal and Severus, Friends of Hagrid. I am Aragog, Friend of Hagrid."

The Acromantula's voice was deep and surprisingly smooth.

"Well met Aragog," answered Severus while Dhaal bowed his head briefly, his wings dropping in a less threatening stance.

"Because you are friends of Hagrid, you will be allowed to pass on my territory without harm. Beware you do not poach anything from my colony or linger for too long."

Severus had no intention of ever coming back here.

"We will endeavour not to cause you and your colony any trouble," he answered.

Dhaal whickered in agreement. The Acromantula stared at them for a few seconds then went away in a flurry of legs and clicks.

"Let's never meet him again."

Severus could only Sense his agreement to his Familiar. They followed Hagrid back to his hut, where Fang was waiting for them. Dhaal was a lot fonder of the big hound than of Aragog and they lingered until Hagrid had to make his rounds in the forbidden forest.

As they left Hogwarts, Severus resolved to find an excuse to speak with the Bloody Baron during his visit the next day. While his day had been fruitful, he had not made as much progress as he had hoped on the Horcrux front.
