Chapter 20: Date Night

One morning in Canterlot City, Mr. Cranky Doodle woke up to the sound of his alarm clock. He opened his eyes, and grumbled as he turned off his clock. He then got out of bed, and went to his bathroom.

After showering, shaving, brushing his teeth, he stepped out of the bathroom with his towel wrapped around his waist. As he was walking to get his clothes, he accidentally stubbed his toe on his bed.

"Oww! (Groans), dumb bed." he complained.

As he rubbed his sore toe, his phone rang. Angrily, he grabbed his phone and answered.

"What is it?" he asked.

"Good morning." greeted a friendly voice.

Mr. Cranky Doodle's mood immediately changed.

"Oh, Matilda. Good morning."

Mr. Cranky Doodle and Miss Matilda had been going on out for a while now, and they were both very happy.

"You're still picking me up this morning right?"

"Of course I am. I'll see you in an hour or so."

Then he hung up. After getting dressed, and eating his breakfast, he went to his car to pick up Matilda.

When he got to her little house, she was waiting for him in her driveway. Mr. Cranky Doodle couldn't believe his eyes. It may have just been the morning sun, but he thought Matilda looked particularly beautiful.

He parked his car in front of the driveway, and Matilda got in.

"Good morning, Doodle." Matilda greeted.

Then she pecked him on the cheek. Mr. Cranky Doodle felt his cheeks heat up, and he smiled.

"Good morning to you too."

They drove to work together, and parked in the teacher's parking lot.

"So, I'm looking forward to tomorrow night." she said.

"Me too." Mr. Cranky Doodle replied.

Tomorrow night Mr. Cranky Doodle planned to take Matilda out for a night on the town.

"Well I better get to my classroom."

Matilda un-clicked her seatbelt, and got out. Mr. Cranky Doodle sighed happily, and then after a while he got out of his car. But he also grabbed a clothes bag. It was the suit he was going to be wearing for his date, and he was going to drop it off at the cleaners after school.

In his classroom, Mr. Cranky Doodle put his suit in the closet, and then the first bell rang.

"Time to teach some kids some math."

His first class came into the classroom talking and chattering. After everyone was in their seats, he began teaching them. Pinkie Pie and Twilight Sparkle who were in the class noticed their teacher's demeanor.

"What do you think's going on with Mr. Cranky Doodle?" Twilight whispered.

"I don't know. But he seems happy." Pinkie replied.

"I haven't seen him like this since he and Miss Matilda started dating."

Class went on as normal, and then the bell rang.

"Bye Mr. Cranky Doodle." said Pinkie, as she walked out.

"Goodbye, Pinkie Pie." he replied.

That surprised Pinkie, but it was a nice surprise.

After his next class, Mr. Cranky Doodle checked on his suit. As he looked at it, he was suddenly startled by the sound of a rock being thrown at the window. He jumped a little, and pushed his suit against the wall, and it snagged on a hook.

Mr. Cranky Doodle gasped, and saw that his suit got torn. "Oh no!" he cried.

At first his mood was shock, then it changed to anger. Meanwhile Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy were on their way to Mr. Cranky Doodle's class.

"Pinkie and Twilight said Mr. Cranky Doodle's in a pretty good mood today." Rainbow Dash informed.

"That's good to hear." replied Fluttershy.

But when they came into the classroom, Mr. Cranky Doodle looked grouchy. This surprised the two.

"Uh, good morning Mr. Cranky Doodle." Fluttershy greeted quietly.

"What's so good about it?" he grumbled.

The girls were a little frightened by his demeanor, and quickly went to their desks. For the rest of class, Mr. Cranky Doodle was grumpy. And it wasn't his usual grumpy, it was like he was more grumpy than usual.

He grumbled a lot, he snapped at students who slipped up, and was aggressive with his lesson.

The second the bell rang, the students dashed out of the room.

"Gee, I wonder what happened to Mr. Cranky Doodle?" wondered Fluttershy.

"I don't know. What could make a man suddenly go from happy to grouchy?" Rainbow Dash though.

As the day went by, Mr. Cranky Doodle got even grumpier. And it was for good reason, along with his suit getting ruined, the reservations he made for the restaurant got cancelled, and the show they were going to got rescheduled.

It was like Mr. Cranky Doodle had turned into an angry bull. Whenever students saw him in the hall, they quickly walked the other way, and avoided eye contact at all times.

In the teacher's lounge, Mr. Cranky Doodle was pouring himself a mug of coffee, muttering angrily.

"Mr. Cranky Doodle?" asked a voice.

"WHAT!" he snapped.

He turned around sharply, causing his coffee to spill onto the other person. But Mr. Cranky Doodle's face fell and all his anger drained away. The person who had called him was Matilda, and now his hot coffee was all over her dress.

Matilda looked shocked, and couldn't believe what her boyfriend had done.

"Matilda...I..."

"No, it's okay. I better go."

And with that she quickly left.

"Matilda wait." he called.

But it was too late, she was gone and Mr. Cranky Doodle felt defeated.

At lunch, the girls were getting their trays, Pinkie noticed that Mr. Cranky Doodle was getting his food but looked different.

"Girls, look at Mr. Cranky Doodle." she said.

The girls did, and didn't see anything wrong.

"So?" asked Rainbow Dash.

"Look at him, he looks...sad."

"He does look like something's wrong." agreed Fluttershy.

"It's probably best if we mind our own business." Rarity piped up.

But Pinkie didn't listen, and walked over to him.

"Uh, Mr. Cranky Doodle?" she asked.

"What is it Pinkie?" he replied.

"I couldn't help but wonder, are you okay?"

Mr. Cranky Doodle didn't know what came over him but he found himself confessing to the girls about how things were going wrong and how he'd hurt Matilda. The girls listened to him, and then stepped away to talk.

"I ain't never seen him like this before." said Applejack.

"He seems really sad." Fluttershy mentioned.

"Maybe we should help him?" thought Twilight.

"I don't know. It's not good to meddle." Rarity.

"But then again, I've never seen him like this." Rainbow Dash piped up.

"Girls, Mr. Cranky Doodle may be grumpy but ever since he met Miss Matilda he's been happier. And I'm not going to let anything get in the way in that. Besides this is love we're talking about." Pinkie persuaded.

The girls agreed on it. Then they went back over to him.

"Mr. Cranky Doodle, you're in luck. Because we're going to help you." Pinkie told him.

Mr. Cranky Doodle looked at them curiously.

After lunch, Pinkie and Twilight went to go talk to Miss Matilda. At first, she was a little hesitant to talk about her love life with her students, but eventually poured out.

"I know he's a good man. But I just wish he wasn't so grumpy all the time."

"Give him another chance, Miss Matilda. I know he's really sorry." said Pinkie.

"Yeah, everyone makes mistakes." agreed Twilight.

Matilda thought for a moment, and agreed to speak to Mr. Cranky Doodle. The girls smiled at each other.

So during a break, the two teachers met up in the teacher's lounge.

"I'm really sorry, Matilda. I was just in a bad state of mind." Mr. Cranky Doodle apologized.

"It's okay, Cranky. But please tell me you'll try and keep your temper under control."

"I will I promise."

Miss Matilda smiled, and hugged him really quick.

"I'll be looking forward to tomorrow night."

"Uh, yeah, me too." Mr. Cranky Doodle replied a little nervously, as he pulled on his shirt collar.

When he left the lounge, the girls met him.

"So how'd it go?" asked Applejack.

"Well she forgave me."

The girls squealed happily.

"But I still have to fix these other problems."

"Don't worry. Just leave it to us." Pinkie assured.

And so the girls did just that. Mr. Cranky Doodle gave Rarity his suit, and she fixed it up in her home ec class. Applejack knew about a play that was going to happen in the park, and got them tickets.

Fluttershy knew a nice restaurant, and gave Mr. Cranky Doodle the number. Luckily he got a reservation. At the end of the day, Rarity gave Mr. Cranky Doodle his suit.

"Wow, Rarity." he gasped.

"It looks better than before."

"Oh it was nothing. Just a stitch there, some hemming there, and a little cleaning." Rarity said.

Then Applejack came up to them.

"I got your tickets, Mr. Cranky Doodle."

"Now what's this show about?"

"It's a show about some country folk going west. You'll like it."

And then the rest of the girls came up.

"Fluttershy got your new reservations." informed Rainbow Dash.

"Are you sure this is a nice restaurant?" Mr. Cranky Doodle wanted to know.

"Oh, yes Mr. Cranky Doodle. It has four stars." Fluttershy assured.

Mr. Cranky Doodle looked at the girls with a skeptic look, but then his expression grew grateful.

"Thank you girls, for all your help." The girls smiled at him.

"You're welcome, Mr. Cranky Doodle." Pinkie replied.

And they all left the school.

The next evening, Matilda was at her house, finishing getting ready for her date. She had just finished her make-up, and her hair.

"(Giggles), Matilda you're gonna knock Doodle's socks off with this look." she said to herself in the mirror.

She had on a beautiful yellow evening dress with black heels. Then the doorbell rang, he was here. When Matilda opened the door, there he stood. He was dressed smartly in his suit, and he held a bouquet of red roses in his hand.

"Good evening, Matilda." he greeted suavely.

"Good evening, Mr. Cranky Doodle."

She took the flowers, sniffed them, and then put them in a vase before leaving.

First they went to the restaurant Fluttershy recommended. It was a nice Italian place, and they got a nice seat by the window. The wine was good, the entrees were delicious, there was even music that played.

When they were finished, they went to the park for the play. They managed to get good seats, and the acting was very well done. The play made the laugh, shocked, and even shed a tear or two. After it was over, they applauded.

Then Mr. Cranky Doodle drove her home.

"I had a wonderful time, Doodle."

"So did I." The two then kissed.

This truly was the perfect date and the perfect night.
