Happy New Year

.

Flashback

January, 2003.

.

The ravenette walked around the house with a stack of plates in her hands. She glanced downwards every so often. She was worried for her daughter. She followed her everywhere. She was afraid of bumping into her. She did put her behind the baby gate earlier but she quickly grew restless from the noises outside. The firecrackers were set off all over the neighborhood. She picked her up straight away once she was done with her chores. "Let's go to mommy," she told her. Her daughter nodded at her and she then absentmindedly twisted her loose locks in her fingers. Her wife was entertaining their guests.

.

"Here's yours, Ricchan, be good to Mio."

"Shan kyu, obasshan!

"Uh, did you give him something, Sora?"

"I only gave him his new year's money."

"I see. Thanks. Here's one for Micchan."

.

The brunette kept her eyes on her daughter for a few seconds before she shifted her attention to her neighbor again. Her mother put her down although it visibly stressed her. Her eyes were brimming with tears. She instinctively held up her legs. Her mother did not give in. She lost her strength after a short time and she then let her feet touch the ground. Yoko heaved a sigh at her stubborn daughter before she guided her to bow to their neighbor. The latter smiled at her. She patted her head as she complimented her braids. She handed her the envelope again. Her daughter decorated it himself last night. "This one's for Mio," he told her. He doodled on it and he filled it with his favorite stickers.

.

"Um... mama? Can I?"

"It's alright, princess, take it. It's yours."

"Um... Um, thank you."

"Why are you hiding behind me again?"

"She's so pretty, Yoko."

.

The brunette could hardly look away from the ravenette. She dreamed of dressing up her daughter in pretty yukatas during various special occasions, however, she would always come home a mess as if she just survived a war. She eventually gave up on the seemingly impossible dream. It's so refreshing. She thought to herself. Her smile naturally grew wider when she noticed her curiously peeking at her from behind her mother.

.

"I'm sorry. She's still shy around others."

"Don't worry. It's cute."

"Miochuan, leshh play."

"This brat of mine... I forgot about him."

"…mommy?" ( ・_・)ノ

"Come here. I'm checking your mouth!"

"No, mommy, go way."

"I see you. You're chewing something."

"Nope. Shoo." (O‸O;)

"Did you eat something off the floor –"

.

She did not bother to finish her question, instead, she ran after her daughter before he could make it pass the gateway. Again? Sora thought to himself. He unconsciously picked up where she left off. He shook his head at his neighbors. He lost count on how many times he saw him getting into troubles with his mother. His wife laughed at them as she cradled their sleepy daughter. She was dozing off in her arms. He stroked her cheeks before he kissed her there. He gave his wife a kiss as he rested his hand on her waist. Their neighbors, on the other hand, were arguing.

.

"How many times do I tell you?"

"More than ten?"

"Don't get smart with me now!"

"I can only count to 10." (T⌓T)

"Hey, what are you crying for?"

"It tastes so bad."

"...and you only realize it now?"

"Yesh. I sowy. I'm slow." (T⌓T)

"Don't do it again."

"I'll try, mommy, uh, no. I won't."

.

The brunette tripped over his tongue as soon as his mother narrowed her eyes at him. She grabbed his arm. She yanked him towards her. She pinched his nose until he reluctantly opened his mouth. She scooped something from there. She studied its texture. It horrified her. She bit her lower lip. She sniffed at it. She sighed in relief. "Don't eat dog food again," she warned him. She pulled out a handkerchief from her handbag. He cried his heart out as his mother wiped him clean. His loud cries stirred his neighbor. She simply stared at them as she sucked on her thumb. His mother used her sleeves to wipe his eyes.

.

"Stop crying, Ritsu, Mio's watching."

"Who cares? You're all I see."

"Jeez. This little liar." (◡‿◡˶)

"It's true, mommy, I love you."

"Alright, let's get you an ice cream."

.

He recovered within seconds at the mention of his favorite snack. His mother made him rinse his mouth with their garden hose before they went on their merry way to an ice cream parlor. Their neighbors entered their house at the same time they disappeared into the crowds. Yoko headed towards the nursery. She turned on the white noise machine before she put her daughter inside her crib. She hugged her worn teddy bear as she curled herself into a ball. Her wife walked into the room soon after. He brought her a cup of coffee. They sipped their drinks as they watched over their daughter. She went to sleep after a few minutes.

.

"He's so cute I'd love to adopt him."

"I don't want to imagine that."

"It's not like he's eating dog poop."

"I bet the smell stopped him."

"...but he'll be a good friend to her."

"I'm worried for our princess."

"He's fun. She'll have fun with him."

.

They talked some more about their neighbor. She wanted to set up a play date for the two children. He would rather let her play with someone less rambunctious. Their conversation turned into an argument. She rolled her eyes at him before she quickly stomped into their bedroom. She replaced her yukata with a shirt and a pair of pants. She went to her garden. She put on her gloves and she then started weeding her flowerbeds. She loves gardening. She even owned a flower shop. Her sister currently helped her manage it. She left it in her care once she hit her third trimester, however, she decided to leave it forever because her daughter was her priority. She gave her her full attention.
