Darius pinched himself a few more times to make sure he wasn't dreaming. After his skin could take no more abuse, he was finally convinced that this was real.
Darius Bowman was one of the few teens that had the privilege of being the first campers of the newly opened Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous. As a camper, one of the many things he was promised was up close seats to some of their dinosaurs, both the herbivores and the fearsome carnivores.
Something tapped on his chest, and he looked down to see that his Velociraptor tooth necklace was dancing in the sea breeze. His permanent look of joy faded a little as he touched it gently.
...I did it, Dad. Darius closed his eyes. I finally made it to Jurassic World like I promised. I just wish you could be here with me.
"You alright, kid?"
Darius opened his eyes to see a pretty teenage girl standing next to him, her arms hugging the metal railings as well.
"Huh? O-Oh yeah, just...thinking."
"Not having second thoughts, are ya?" the girl smirked.
"Psh! No way!" Darius smirked back. "It's been a dream of mine to see dinosaurs one day in person, and I'm not going to trade my spot for anything."
The girl just smiled, seeing just how great his love for the ancient beasts were.
"I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that this is your first time here?"
"Oh yeah! I can't wait to see what Jurassic World is like! Ooh, I wonder which one we would get to see first? The herbivores, probably, since they are safer, but I wouldn't mind if we started off with at least a Compsognathus!"
"Oh, those little green bastards? Yeah, they're fun, but make sure to not get bit. Those suckers can bite hard."
She lifted up her left sleeve for her already rolled up green shirt, revealing a small bite.
"Wait, have you been there before?"
"Oh yeah, my grandpa and my mom both worked at Jurassic Park and World, so yeah, my family has quite a bit of history with dinos. My grandpa's Gerry Harding, by the way. The name's Jessica, but you can call me 'Jess.'"
If they were in a cartoon, his eyes would've been filled with glitter and stars.
"Really? Oh my gosh, it's such an honor to meet a Harding! You guys are famous for being dinosaur veterinarians. Oh yeah, and for being survivors of the Isla Nublar incident."
Jessica gave him a funny look, and Darius slapped his hands over his mouth.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! Was I being insensitive about it? Sorry."
Jessica just shrugged.
"Nah, it's cool. Nobody died, so it's fine. It does get a little tiring to be known for that kind of thing, though. Still…"
She turned her toward to the left, and Darius realized that they were finally making it to shore.
"As stupid as it sounds, considering my family's bad history, I do hope to be a dino vet as well."
Darius just gave her an encouraging smile and a thumbs up.
"I'm sure you'll make a wonderful dino vet, Jess. Maybe I might become one too. Would be interesting working together."
"Sure, Dino Nerd," Jess chuckled, making Darius pout at his new nickname.
…
It took roughly twenty more minutes, but the campers finally arrived at the island of Isla Nublar.
It looked just like it did in the website: full of greenery, a beautiful ocean surrounding it, and best of all, visible buildings that could mean only one thing:
They've made it to Jurassic World.
"Welcome to Isla Nublar, campers!" A man in a red, Jurassic World t-shirt and tan shorts with a yellow headband was the first one to greet the teens. "You are the chosen few teens in the entire world to ever experience the awesomeness that is Camp Cretaceous."
The man paused for a moment, almost as if expecting them to cheer, but they all just stared at him in excitement. Which was good enough for him.
"Now, I know that the trip was a little rough on some of you guys- how are you doing, Ben?" The group turned to look at a fellow camper, who was still puking over the concrete port. He gave them a reassuring thumbs up, before he continued blowing chunks. Apparently, he was not a fan of traveling over water.
"-But you guys made it! I'm Dave, Head Counselor. Yes, you heard that correctly, I'm the leader of this new pack, so I'm a big shot."
Almost as if the universe had enough of his cocky talk, a jeep suddenly drove into the scene, stopping into a sudden drift. A woman stepped out of the car, who wore similar clothing to Dave.
"Ah, so sorry I'm late. Had to pick up a rather...naughty camper."
"Hey…" Another person stepped out of the vehicle. Unlike the rest of them, who looked clean and tidy, this one looked like he just woke up on the wrong side of the bed, with his semi-long sun-kissed hair looking quite messy and spiky, his jaw-length bangs lightly dancing in the wind.
"Who's he?" Darius asked the counselors.
"His name is Naruto Uzumaki, and he is a fellow camper just like you guys. Similar to the other two campers Kenji and Jessica here, they have ties to this park, hence why they got here. Speaking of, where is Kenji?"
…
The answer to the previous question came in the form of a helicopter. Since the group was so close to the descending vehicle, everyone was covering their ears (except for Naruto, who just squinted at the large vehicle) as they covered their eyes and mouths from the swirling dust.
Out stepped out a young, teenage boy wearing a pink t-shirt and tan shorts, carrying a large weekender bag. He briefly lifted his sunglasses as a way to greet them.
"Greetings, my dudes! Kenji's in the house, so let the party commence!"
Even the counselors looked at the rich kid in deadpan, which let the campers know immediately just how familiar they were with this one.
Tossing his pack at Roxie, he winked at Yasmina Fadoula, a young Middle Eastern woman who was wearing a light-gray jacket and a pink and grey shorts. .
"So what's your deal?" he flirted, before falling ungracefully onto the ground, courtesy of Roxie tossing his sack back at him.
"Okay, let's go!" Roxie announced cheerfully, with the camps huddling up like sardines in the back of the counselor's pickup truck. Most of them (surprisingly, considering the vehicle) had seatbelts available for them, but Darius and Naruto didn't have one (well, Darius did, but he offered his to Jessica).
Darius was squeezed next to Brooklynn, the pink-haired social-media star who got invited due to her being famous for "unboxing the world." She didn't pay him any mind, since she was livestreaming her adventure so far with her phone.
And Naruto? He chose to just lay on his back, and had somehow already begun dozing off.
"I hope you've gotten my Mom's notes?" Ben whined out loud. "I don't do well on winding roads!"
Everyone ignored him, of course.
"What's up, Brooklanders! It's Brooklynn comin atcha from the best place ever: Camp Cretaceous. Like and subscribe to join me as I unbox Jurassic World!"
The green-eyed girl briefly lowered her phone to talk to her fellow campers.
"Okay, I need you all to say who you are and a little bit about yourself. Aaaand, shoot!"
Darius blinked, a little unprepared for the surprise interview, before he cleared his throat.
"I-I beat this awesome VR dinosaur game, which was how I got here," the teen stammered. Naruto opened one eye to look at the dark-skinned boy, smiling a little. "My name's Darius-"
"I'm sorry," a girl with jet-black hair interrupted, nearly squealing giddily. She had a southern accent, which made sense considering how her family lived in Texas as a farmer. "You're Brooklynn? I'm such a huge fan of yours! My name is Sammy Gutierrez. Total Brooklander! Oh yeah, my family supplies all the beef for this park, so that's how I got here!"
"Great to meet you, Sammy," Brooklynn replied, feeling both awkward and excited for meeting a fan.
"...What's a Brooklander?" Darius asked.
"Oh, it's what my online followers call themselves," Brooklynn answered sheepishly.
"Uh, yeah, all 27 million of them!" Sammy boasted for Brooklynn. Kenji, Jessica, and Darius looked visibly impressed at this.
"Ugh, yeah, that's why she's the only one that gets to keep her cell phone," Yasmina pointed out. Cause she's famous."
"Oh, rich and famous? We're meant to be," Kenji said flirtingly, before taking Brooklynn's phone to take a selfie with her.
"...Your family raises some very nice meat," Naruto added, before taking out beef jerky from his pocket. He dusted it off a little, before he began eating it, much to their disgust.
"...Right. Well, I'm Jessica Harding, daughter of Sarah Harding and granddaughter of Gerry Harding, both who worked for Jurassic Park and Jurassic World as vets. I'm currently studying to be a vet myself so that hopefully one day I can work with dinos as well."
"Saving the best for last, I'm Kenji Kon, your neighborhood rich boy. My dad owns a few condos on this joint, so I'm like the prince here."
"H-Hey, I'm still here," Ben weakly moaned as he puked out of the truck, while Yasmina just let out a small snort.
Before they could resume their introductions, the truck suddenly came to a sudden stop, surprising everyone on board (except for Naruto, who looked like he fell asleep eating his jerky).
"Um, Dave, what's going on?" Ben asked softly as he held his stomach.
"Uh, nothing you need to worry about," he said as he activated his shock prod. "Buuut, just in case, you guys should stay in your seats."
Ben let out a groan/whimper as he turned away, while the others moved to get a better look. The two counselors were slowly walking into the forest, appearing to look for something.
Darius seemed to be the only one who noticed the rustling in the bushes from behind the group.
"Um, guys?" he whispered to the group. "Um, guys?"
*SHRIEK!*
Everyone yelled as something leapt from the bushes. Kenji, Yasmina, and Sammy all backed away as far as they could on the cramped back of the truck. Ben and Brooklyn leapt out without hesitation. Darius fell onto the side of the pickup seats. And Naruto?
He just looked up in mild annoyance at the small, bipedal dinosaur that had just landed on his stomach.
"...Oh, alright," he sighed as he spat out the remains of his beef jerky. The little, green carnivore happily accepted the meal, chewing on it quickly.
Darius looked at the dinosaur in amazement, but before he could get a proper look, the small dinosaur leapt away...only to get wrapped in a small blanket by Roxie.
"Crisis averted," she announced cheerfully as she put the Compsognathus into a small pet carrier. "These things are always getting out of their enclosures."
"Woah, a real life Compsognathus!" Darius nearly squealed in joy.
"Oh, please, Compies? It took a blanket and a cat carrier to catch it. Boring!" Kenji waved off.
"I dunno, it scared you pretty good," Darius shot back with a grin. This made the girls chuckle as Brooklynn took a picture of Kenji's embarrassed face. Darius then knelt to take a look at the Compy from the backseat.
"Right! So shall we continue the introductions?" Brooklynn said cheerfully as they moved on.
Yasmina gave a brief introduction of herself, revealing her status as an aspiring athlete, with her sponsors being the reason for why she was here. Ben Pincus introduced himself as the son of a mother who worked under Masrani, hence how he got his spot as a camper. He also revealed that he was pretty much scared of everything, which honestly didn't surprise the rest of them.
They all turned to Naruto, who was already back asleep.
"Is he narcoleptic or something?" Ben asked quietly.
"Hey! Sleeping Beauty! A little introduction maybe?" Kenji yelled, nudging his shoulder with his foot. Naruto blinked, looking at everyone in a dazed manner.
"Eh? What's going on now?"
"Um, can you give the audience a quick introduction of who you are?" Brooklynn asked, holding her phone above him.
"Ugh, alright. My name's Naruto Uzumaki, my godfather's Masrani, and my adopted mother's a dinosaur." He then closed his eyes and went back to sleep. Everyone just looked at each other with either a confused or amused look.
…
"Campers, welcome to Camp Cretaceous!" Dave and Roxie announced in unison. The group (including Naruto, who woke up just in time to see the large wooden gates) cheered and awed at their arrival.
Their amazement grew even larger as they finally saw the camp itself. It was a large building with lots of shading built into a large tree, essentially making it the world's fanciest treehouse.
Brooklynn, of course, wasted no time on introducing the camp to her audience, with Kenji throwing in the fact that his dad's penthouse was more impressive than the camp they were living in.
Sammy was amazed at the architecture of the place, noting how it was as large as her family's farm back home.
"That's because when the camp is all set up, it'll be able to house 500 kids!" Roxie explained enthusiastically. "Not to mention 150 staff members as well!"
"Alright, campers, huddle up!" Dave announced, driving everyone to walk back to the two adults. "We have some announcements from your co-head counselors!"
"Not a thing, Dave," Roxie snorted, before she continued on his behalf. "Alright, listen up, cause I'll only say this once. There are some ground rules to cover! Curfew's at 8 PM, and it's lights out at 9 PM."
This earned them some groans from some of the campers, save for Jessica (who knew this would happen and why), Ben (who actually looked happy for the early mandatory bedtime), and Naruto, who just looked indifferent about the rule.
"This is for your safety," Roxie continued, pacing near the large rock Jurassic World logo pit. "Remember, we are in a dinosaur filled jungle, so you must always keep your distance or you could get seriously injured, or worse."
"Um, define worse," Ben asked nervously.
"Psh, want me to give you a laundry list?" Naruto asked playfully. "You know, I once wrestled one of the young raptors as a kid. I thought she'd be friendly like my mom, but it turns out that she was pretty aggro even as a youngster. Man, that big claw is no joke, I'll tell you that. Got sent to the medical room from that experience, but it was still pretty fun. Here, I think I still have the scars."
"Okay, here are your cabins!" Dave interrupted, regathering their attention. "Feel free to check out your new room and go claim a bed!"
"First one there gets top bunk!" Yasmina yelled as she ran past Kenji. This prompted the others to join her, save for Darius, who went to get another look at the Compsognathus, Jessica, who chose to just take her time, and Naruto, who also chose to take his time, looking visibly disappointed at not getting to share his tale.
…
The day seemed to go by in a blur. They took a quick tour around the treehouse cabins, the nearby staff houses, and they even got to visit the dinosaur veterinary clinic.
Naruto got to meet Tsume and Hana Inuzuka, a mother and daughter duo who, similar to Sarah and Jessica Harding, raised, treated, and otherwise took care of the dinos in sickness and health. He managed to ask them about Rexy, since they were her caretakers, and they assured him that she was doing fine without him. Feeling relieved, he decided to try mingling with the other humans around his age.
He had to admit that it's been a strange, but exciting day. Sure, these campers acted a lot more immature and a lot less formal than the adults he usually hung out with, but in a way, he found himself having more fun with them, even if it was just talking about random stuff. Of course, he never got to share his own stories, partially due to Roxie and Dave reminding him not to on the account of privacy or whatever.
Ah well.
He soon forgot about his little disappointment when they stared at the herding dinosaurs, who were being led by the Jurassic World crew to return to their paddocks. To see this marvelous view under the beautiful sunset, they were on the top of the zipline tower, giving them an eagle's eye view of a scene that only few could dream of.
Naruto's seen this many times, but it still took his breath every time. He looked, and smiled when the other campers felt the same, with even Kenji forgetting about himself and his family's wealth for a moment to enjoy the view that wouldn't have been possible without InGen's ingenuity.
(Oooh, now he got why they're called "InGen.")
Naruto looked over at Darius, smiling at how much he was fanboying at the sight of the majestic beasts, accurately naming each and every one he spotted.
Well, I'm glad someone's having real fun, Naruto thought. I wonder if he'll be my first friend here.
"Woah, are those Sinoceratops?! When did you guys get those?" Darius gasped in amazement.
"Heh, the lab's cooking up a whole bunch of new dinosaurs in that lab," Dave explained, and for a moment, Naruto's face darkened a little. Fortunately, Sammy was here to quickly diffuse the awkward mood.
"Where are they herding them to?" the Texan girl asked, never taking her eyes off of the dinos.
"They're heading them back to their nighttime enclosures," Roxie explained. She would've gone further with the details, but she closed her mouth when Dave started escorting them to the zipline.
"Oh, enough banter!" he cried out in mock exasperation. "Time for some zipline party time!"
Of course, poor Ben had to be first.
"M-Maybe Yasmina should go first," Ben stammered nervously. He was still on the tower with them, but he looked like he was ready to wet himself already from fear. "Or Darius? Or-Or anyone, I-"
But before he could try to stall it any more, Dave just gave Ben's zipline chair a push, sending him screaming towards the other tower the entire way through.
The rest of the group were next to go, with the camp counselors allowing a five second wait before sending in another camp zooming through the air. Naruto volunteered to go last, which the counselors just agreed with.
Even though Naruto's been on the zipline before, it still gave him the same rush it did the first time he tried it. Whooping and cheering like the others, he put his hands up in the air as he was sent hurling towards the other tower.
This time, however, he got to share the experience with some teens his own age, which honestly made the experience much more fun. Sure, he played with Rexy, sometimes hung out with Owen and his raptor squad, and even played some video games with some of the counselors, but they never did seem to fill the void in his heart, since in the end, each and every one of them lived in their separate worlds. But today, he met some people whose worlds were just a bit more similar to his. And honestly, for just one day, he honestly felt like a regular kid.
Naruto's thoughts came to a halt as he recognized one of the dinosaurs nearby. It was the mighty Brachiosaurus, whose neck was so long that it reached the zipline. Her head was about to cross his path, and he knew that he was going to hit her.
Naruto's eyes widened as he realized that he recognized this particular Brachiosaurus. Fiddling with his zipline seat, he managed to hit the emergency brake just as he was about to collide with this dinosaur.
The said dinosaur stopped in its tracks, and turned to look at the blond boy. The two of them recognized each other, with the blond human having befriended this particular gentle giant many years ago.
"Hello, Kushina," he murmured, giving her nose a pat. The mighty herbivore let out a small moan of recognition, before she slowly moved to join her herd.
That was the name Uncle Wu gave her. He said that it was in honor of his late human mother, who gave her life to save his. He said that this particular dinosaur was special, since it was the first one the first guests of Jurassic Park ever saw, so he felt like she deserved a special name. Besides, this one had a small red feather growing on top of her, which made the chosen name make more sense, since, according to Wu's stories and his late mother's picture, she had beautiful, long red hair.
Naruto couldn't lie, a part of him still felt like the name would've fit Rexy better, but in the end, her name stuck, and he couldn't bear to try to completely replace his fallen mother like that.
Besides, we all have to move on, Naruto smiled as he undid the brake, allowing him to continue back to his new friends. He didn't look back at the Brachiosaurus, allowing him to move forward without hesitation. Small droplets of water began forming in his eyes, and he moved to wipe them away. No need to make the others think he was a bigger crybaby than Ben.
Naruto frowned as he squirmed about in his new bed. He already missed Rexy and her nest, with the cool, soft dirt feeling much better than the weird, squishy mattress that made up his bed.
Normally, this would bother him so much that he would get out of bed and go make another one for himself- but, he did promise to play along and "play human." So that's what he did.
Sighing, he stared at the night sky outside, wondering how Rexy was done. He then realized that he missed her soft, comforting puffs of air as she inhaled and exhaled while sleeping.
His eyes then turned to the other campers, who were already asleep. He closed his eyes, deciding to try to listen to their breathing instead.
He noted just how unique each one's sleep breathing was to each person. For instance, Yasmina's breathing was pretty slow, sort of similar to Blue's breathing when he spied on her napping one time. Brooklynn's breathing was pretty slow as well, although still a bit faster than the athlete's.
Ben, naturally, had the fastest heart rate out of all of them. While it wasn't fast enough for him to start worrying about it, it certainly was fast enough where his heart stood out from the rest.
Sammy and Jessica's breaths were pretty similar to, although he noted some slight tension in Sammy's breathing. Hm, perhaps she's having a nightmare right now or something.
Speaking of Jessica, Naruto began wondering why he wasn't allowed near her for a while. I mean, he's seen her a few times and has observed her along with the other juvenile humans, but he was never really allowed near them. Aside from that, however, he could go pretty much anywhere he wanted on the island.
That's why despite constantly being surrounded by people, both staff, businessmen, and customers alike, he always felt lonely, even when near Dr. Wu, Mr. Masrani, and Rexy.
But not today. Today, he felt just a little less lonely.
As his eyes began to feel heavy, he noticed that Brooklynn was awoken by something. Ah, it was probably because of Kenji and Darius. They both went downstairs for something, and probably made some noise or whatever. She sat up, grabbed her phone, and moved downstairs. Shrugging, he finally allowed himself to rest.
- End of Chapter 2 -
