Two hours, it's been two hours since Chris and Leon were told bad news, that one can possibly die, it can either be one of the babies or- Claire. Leon was pacing around the hallway, hands on top of his head, he's too worried to sit and calm down as he inhales and exhales to somehow have a sense of control to the emotions he has left, while Chris is seated on the waiting bench as he now shakes his leg uncontrollably, his sister, his only family, that tough girl may be whisked away from him at any moment now and he had been breaking down with his head low as he tries to hide his face, his vulnerability taking over him like when he had lost the people he had before, but nothing beats the pain when it comes to his own younger sister, he simply cannot lose her or else he'll lose it all. When it comes to thinking about the kids- her kids, he lifts his head up slightly to look at his friend though, him being the father of the babies must even hurt the same as what he is feeling, and he's just the uncle. Leon's tears earlier had dried up on his cheeks and he hadn't also replaced his stained clothing as he is too distressed to think about his appearance now. They had also seen a couple of nurses earlier bringing in three infant incubators into the room and that's when they realize that the babies are probably born and okay...hoping they really are, but not enough to reassure them that nothing went wrong, until they see all four is when they'll calm down.
It made them more worried about Claire, no updates on how everything is going inside, they haven't talked to each other in the past hour either, but both men know they're thinking of the same thing. They were so focused on their thoughts until they heard the door open and they both flinch to look at the movement, Leon quickly glancing inside hoping to catch a glimpse of Claire and he did, she was unconscious, eyes closed, but his peripheral view catches something and his ears as well while his main vision is still focused on Claire from a distance until he switched his eyes to look at the nurses coming outside the room. They were pushing a wheeled machine outside- towards him and that's when he finally saw a baby in the incubator- not just any baby...but one of his as one nurse that had assisted him earlier remarked to the baby he was pushing the carrier of once he saw Leon, "Say hi to your dad little one.", time seemed to slow down when he gazed at the tiny human...still pink in complexion, eyes closed and limbs moving actively- assuming that it was baby A, one of his sons- with wires attached to his small body to monitor his vitals whilst he gets wheeled past him, he wanted to follow but he was gently pushed away by one of the male nurses. Soon after followed by another incubator and his eyes shifted on it, focusing on the baby within it and he saw and assumed that they were in order that would lead to baby B- his only daughter, she was small but like her brother, wires are everywhere, her eyes are closed but she is moving and she also passed him as he could only stare at them for a minute while he keeps his distance and remain in his place, not wanting to possibly harm them with his state like he almost did with his first son, it is until his daughter was followed by her other brother- baby C...their superman, unlike his siblings, he was a bit smaller than they already are and he was calmer with his movements, he also went by Leon and into the NICU and he could only watch as the doors closed slowly, taking his kids in...
He was frozen in his place- standing, processing everything that had just happened, his babies are finally born...they're here and he had seen them for the first time ever, he's officially a father and the fact warmed his heart as he tears up- crying because of joy that they looked somehow healthy in his eyes- they're fine, but also sad that he wasn't there to hear their first cry, first breath, or even cut their umbilical cord himself. Leon had also caught a glance of Chris staring at him nodding, he had seen them as well, his niece and nephews, also a glimpse of happiness in his eyes as he greeted Leon, "They're here Leon, you're a dad.", and he smiled back at the big man before Chris' demeanor changed again as he started to sob, not because of joy like the first time father felt but because of sorrow for his sister, Leon slowly walked to Chris and sat beside him, patting the man's back, "Don't worry about me brother, you go on and get clean, your kids might need you inside later.", he reassured his younger friend, however, Leon looked at Claire's brother, this was all his fault...if he just hadn't pulled her to him that night- she would still be alright at this moment...but then again, there's no point in regretting his past actions as it helped shape his present- his children, and he's sure that if Claire could talk right now, she will tell him the same...she was always so selfless.
He had gone back to Claire's apartment for a while, to clean up the stain on the floor...the one that she left- so it wouldn't be a permanent mark, and to take a shower, get clean clothes then pack some of the babies necessities that he needs to bring to the hospital, he also took some of Claire's clothes as well, just in case she needs to- when she wakes up. There was no guarantee that she will yet as there is no news about her for the mean time assuming she's still being monitored, but Chris is still back at the hospital and he hopes to get any kind of update from him later, he had texted him that he was told that all of the babies are healthy so far, but they still had to develop their lungs and immune system for at least a week in the NICU before they're to be officially okay to go home, for now, he can visit them often from today during hours that are allowed to obviously.
As he scans her wardrobe earlier, Leon can't help but get nostalgic whenever he sees her red leather jackets, she's had different types over the years, but the one that lies close to his heart was the one her brother gave her, she still has it even after how old it looked and had worn out a bit, he ran his fingers on the sleeve of the clothing, the one she wore when they met, no matter how many memories of terror it holds, it was still valuable to her...and also to him, "Survive for us Claire, like the night of Racoon City, we still need you...I still need you.", he murmured, shaking his head to go back to reality, he closes the closet door, the lights, locks the main door to quickly go back to the hospital as soon as possible.
Rushing inside as he parks his sedan, he carries the bag that contains everything they need, he pushes the entrance door and unlike he expected, Chris wasn't seated on the bench but instead peeking on the NICU door, possibly observing the babies and Leon approached him as he also peeks through the small rectangular glass and he can see that all three are aligned next to each other and in order with the label written on their incubators Baby Boy Kennedy A, Baby Girl Kennedy B, and Baby Boy Kennedy C, he was expecting the surname to be written as Redfield as that is Claire's surname and she's the patient, and he never told the staff his surname as the father.
"I told them to use your surname, Kennedy suits them better, and I know that's what Claire wanted.", Chris remarks as he glanced at Leon and he smiled at him, "Thanks...brother.", that was the first time the younger man had called his friend a brother and Chris' mood seemed to light up a bit as he tapped his shoulder acknowledging the call, before looking back inside, "You know you can go inside right? Don't you want to hold them? The doctor said they're very strong preemies...well- of course they are, after all- they're Redfield-Kennedys'", and both men giggled a bit at the joke before it died down.
"I'm afraid I'm gonna have to pass for now as much as I want to, I'll just look at them...and maybe tomorrow I will.", he answered, he was scared to drop them, hurt them as he might put too much pressure on their tiny fragile bodies, so he decided on that, "They also look a lot like you as well, especially your daughter.", Leon observes the triplet's facial features and they do look like him in some way, but his sons for some reason took a lot after the Redfields, "Well- she's my little girl...and I don't know about you but Baby A looks a lot like you...also the fact that he's going to be named after you.", he told Chris, it was true, they have revealed the triplet's names just back at their small celebration to their circle, touched Claire's tummy one by one by friends and now unexpectedly, they're here. The said baby had brunette hair and a lot of his uncle's facial structure, "He does...but that might change once he grows up.", he didn't want to take any credit but he can't deny that it was true, "But I must say, Baby C looks like a perfect combination of you and Claire.", Leon stared at his last son, and he does look like a male version of his mother but with the bone structure and also a small cleft chin like his father's, but he didn't dare to reply anymore as Chris is more than right...there's no denying that they are very much his.
Leon also noticed that Chris seemed to be much more jolly than he was when he left, maybe because he's distracting himself with the kids?, "How's...Claire?", despite the joy of becoming a father, it was not complete knowing that his children's mother isn't in the best condition. Chris sighed, crossing his arms, "About that...she's- better but still in the ICU- they transferred her there, doctor told me she lost a lot of blood so I donated since we're the same blood type and her vitals had been stable for the past hour...although she might not wake up for another couple of days- but she will and that's all that matters."
Leon looked up at the ceiling, relieved by the update, "Thank God.", he couldn't bear to lose her, not ever, and he glances back at his children, "She better wake up soon so she can see them, meet them, hold them... like how she told me how she'll do everyday she can.", he can't wait to see her be a mom, imagining their babies in her arms, the one he always sees when she's with children, she's always had that maternal energy inside her, but to witness it with their own will be a totally different perspective...but deep inside, a big part of him just can't wait to embrace her, hug her, kiss her- like he did and thank her for everything she went through to have the triplets.
"She will, she's a tough girl and she will be tough enough to get through this...we just need to think that she's just resting from the 8 months that she carried them.", that was the only thing Chris could say to Leon and to himself.
Author's Note,
My first ever A/N yay!, to Starlord2023, thank you so much for always tuning in and commenting, I've been reading your replies and yes- the story will be kind of unpredictable and messy even in future chapters, it will be a rollercoaster...
And to all readers, thank you too for continuing on reading, it means a lot, I have put all my down time into this story- there's still a lot of chapters to come.
