Before the door slammed shut behind him, he saw his daughter pacing around the car. As soon as it shut, she looked straight at the women in his arms. A second went by before Eve's face lit up. He knew she had been listening to her mothers' heartbeat. But her smile vanished when his daughter looked him in the eye. Suddenly conscious of his appearance, Micheal tried to wipe some of the worry off his face.
'Can you stay with your mother in the backseat?' He asked as neutral as possible, adding some kindness to his voice. It took him a lot of effort to shield his emotions away at this point, but he needed to keep it together for his daughter. His fear would have to wait until his family was safe back in the coven.
Eve nodded and went to sit in the car. Michael walked after her and placed Selene on her side, with her head on their daughters' lap. He closed the door and got in as well. He took one last look at the backseat and saw Eve stroke Selene's hair while looking out of the window.
For the life of him he couldn't remember the trip back to the coven. The roads went by in a blur. Half of him focused on the road, while the other half kept focusing on Selene's heartbeat. When the outer gates of the coven doomed, he was glad they made it alive.
Michael kept forcefully pushing the button to open the gates. They opened just enough for him to go through at his current speed. Michael had to slow down for the inner gates to open, and got more anxious by the second. With just centimeters to spare, he drove through them towards the coven. When the driveway ended, Michael kept going on the gravel path towards the entrance.
The car skidded to a stop just below the stairs and Michael jumped out. 'Varga!' He yelled toward the building. He knew Varga would be awake and pacing around somewhere, monitoring the arrival of his queen. The door opened and Varga stood in the shadows of the doorway. That was fast.
Eve opened the car door for Michael. There was a small smile on her face, trying to reassure him. He returned the smile as he gently took Selene in his arms and lifted her from the seat. He got Selene out of the car and sped up the stairs. Varga's smile was wiped from his face when he saw her.
'What the hell?!'
'Take her to our chambers, I will meet you there.' He carefully handed Selene to Varga. Michael turned to Eve. 'Go with Varga, I will get supplies from the infirmary and meet you there.' Eve nodded and followed Varga inside.
Michael took a second to steady himself. Although they reached the coven with Selene still alive, she wasn't out of the woods yet. Taking a deep breath, he went back into his so-called medical zone and raced to the infirmary.
