Stefan was caught off guard by Matt's phone call. He chuckled at first, thinking Matt was joking, but it wasn't like Matt to crack a joke. "Come on Matt, that's impossible," Stefan finally replied.
"I'm just telling you what she said, and I can't leave her alone, she's young…maybe 10 or 11," Matt replied. Stefan sighed thinking there was more to the story, but he couldn't leave a child on the streets alone in Mystic Falls. He knew Lily's heretics would have a field day with her.
"I'm at Caroline's, you can bring her here," Stefan reluctantly replied. About ten minutes later, there was a knock on the door. Stefan opened it to find Matt with a young girl. Her long, brown hair was hanging in her face, and dripping onto the porch below her. Once he looked into her eyes, he knew she was Damon's. But how, he thought to himself. There was no possible explanation.
"Oh, you poor thing, you're freezing!" Caroline declared from behind him, "Come in." She reached out, and hurried the child inside, and then immediately whisked her away to start a hot shower. "You can take a hot shower, and then we'll get you some food," Caroline's voice trailed off.
"Did she say anything else?" Stefan asked Matt.
"Just that she was starving," Matt replied, "Is it even possible that she's Damon's?" Matt questioned, "I mean, there is a resemblance."
"I agree," Stefan replied, "But there has to be another explanation. I've never heard of a vampire being able to create a baby." Stefan sighed. "Thanks Matt."
"No problem, let me know if there's anything I should be worried about," Matt commented.
"Sure thing," Stefan replied. Matt hurried off to his police car as Stefan closed the door behind him. He could hear Caroline talking a mile a minute in the background. He headed into the kitchen and rummaged through the cabinets to find something for the child to eat, and settled on some mac and cheese. Just as he finished preparing it, he could hear footsteps coming down the stairs and seconds later Caroline entered with the child. She was dressed in Caroline's pink, fleece pajamas, and even though they hung off of her, she looked a lot more comfortable than she had a few minutes ago. Caroline had pulled Alessia's hair back into a braid while it dried.
"Stefan, this is Alessia, but everyone calls her Ally," Caroline announced, "She's 11 years old, and was living in New Orleans with her Mom."
"It's a pleasure to meet you Alessia," Stefan smiled as he extended his hand.
"It's nice to meet you too Mr. Salvatore," she replied as she took his hand. "But please, call me Ally."
"Of course," he replied, "And you can call me Stefan." He smiled slightly. "Do you like mac and cheese?" he asked.
"I love it," she replied. Stefan carried the bowl over to the table, and Ally immediately sat down to eat. "I haven't eaten in a few days," she sighed happily. Caroline and Stefan exchanged glances, as Ally began to eat.
"So Ally, how did you get to Mystic Falls?" Stefan asked.
"I was able to catch a few rides," she replied.
"You hitchhiked?!" Caroline gasped.
"Yeah, I'm very independent for my age," Ally replied with a shrug of her shoulders. "And I obviously don't have a license yet."
"Where's your Mom?" Stefan asked curiously.
"I don't know," Ally replied, "She left me a note saying she had to go away for a while, and told me to find Damon Salvatore because he was my Dad, and said last she knew, Damon was in Mystic Falls, VA." Both Stefan and Caroline eyed her curiously. Ally looked up from her mac and cheese to find them staring at her. "My Mom wasn't really the motherly type. She cared more about her store, the Jardin Gris Voodoo Shop, than she did about me."
"You live in the Cauldron?" Stefan questioned. The Cauldron was an area in New Orleans where the witches lived. His question caught Ally off guard. She was surprised he knew what the Cauldron was. "Ally, is your Mom a witch?" he asked. Ally felt her cheeks flush red with embarrassment. She couldn't imagine how he would know all of this, but in a way it was comforting to her.
"Maybe," her voice cracked.
"It's ok, we know all about witches," Stefan replied reassuringly. Ally sighed with relief. "What's her name?" he asked.
"June Rist," the child replied. Stefan nodded his head. "Do you know her?"
"I've never met her, but I've heard Damon speak of her," Stefan replied as his eyes met Caroline's. Caroline knew that meant Ally's story had some truth to it. It also meant that Ally was the first known dhampir, meaning she was a creature that was the result of the union between a vampire and a human. This made both Stefan and Caroline worried for her safety.
"Well…..I'm going to call my brother and let him know the big news," Stefan mentioned with a smile, "He's out of the country so it may take him a few days to get back here." The last thing Stefan wanted was to have Damon return home because of what had currently transpired in Mystic Falls. Matt had evacuated the entire town to protect them from Lily and her heretics, and Stefan knew Damon would want to impose revenge on them, and it wouldn't end well for anyone.
"You must be tired," Caroline commented to Ally.
"I am," Ally replied with a small yawn.
"I'll make up the couch for you," Caroline smiled. While they headed into the living room, Stefan picked up his phone to make a phone call that was going to change his brother's life. Damon definitely wasn't the fatherly type, and now with Elena gone, he was worried how his big brother would react to the news. On one hand, raising a child could possibly be the distraction that Damon needed, but on the other, the responsibility could be too much for Damon to handle.
"Caroline, what's Damon like?" Ally asked as she helped adjust a sheet on the couch. Caroline was caught off guard. Damon definitely wasn't one of her favorite people and she had a love/hate relationship with him. She stopped what she was doing and looked up at Ally.
"Well….my best friend Elena loved him, and it took a lot to win her trust," Caroline replied. Ally nodded her head.
"I'm really nervous to meet him," Ally replied, "I didn't even know who my Dad was until 2 weeks ago…my Mom never spoke of him, and would change the subject whenever I asked." Caroline frowned in response. "Do you think he'll help me find my Mom?" Ally asked. "I really miss her." Tears filled Ally's eyes. It had been a while since she cried about losing her Mom.
"Aw….I'm sure you do, you poor thing….I think he'll try to help," Caroline replied with a slight smile. She hoped for Ally's sake that Damon would step up and help the child, but like Stefan, she was worried about Damon's reaction and wished Elena was there to help.
