One Month Later...
Lucy - Present
I was dreaming of an endless ocean. My bare feet were dragging along in the sand as I approached the waves closer and closer. But just as I was an inch away from the cool water, I heard the clang of metal.
Confused, I pulled my feet up to move toward the water, but my feet wouldn't move. I looked down at my feet and saw with horror that they were chained back.
Longing welled up and tears started to brim up, "Let me go!" I rasped out. "I-I want to go!"
I pulled and pulled at the chains, trying to scrape away at the metal but all that happened was that the metal cut at my hands. Blood started to pour forth from the cuts and started dripping down all over my feet, the chains, the sand, the ocean.
Everything was blood red. "Stop it, stop it!" I screamed out.
"Lucy! Lucy!" She was being shaken awake by a pair of hands.
Her eyes opened with a start, and she saw Hibiki staring down at her with concern. "Are you okay? You were tossing and turning in your sleep all last night."
"I was?" she asked blearily. He nodded, she just shrugged. "Yeah, I do that a lot. Usually, I have him holding me-" Lucy stopped. What the hell had she just said? It had just spilled out of her mouth - she had no idea what she was talking about. Sudden warmth came over her as she remembered vaguely at the back of her head a comforting touch as she slept somewhere. Lucy shook her head; all these tidbits of memories were having a strange effect on her.
Lucy looked at him hastily. "I mean, I usually have something to hold on to, you know like a stuffed animal." She laughed nervously. "It's a bit embarrassing to have to say that."
He just grinned. "Nah, I think it's cute. Let's go eat breakfast downstairs," he suggested holding out his hand.
She hesitated. "Um, you go ahead without me, I have to freshen up." She tried to smile reassuringly.
Hibiki nodded, and he headed towards the door. "Don't be too long."
And then he was gone. Lucy let out a huge sigh. Hibiki was just about the sweetest thing right now. He had taken me in when she had nowhere to go, and she knew how much she owed him. Unfortunately, her father didn't recognize her anymore and thought she was a stranger, so Hibiki was kind enough to let her stay at his home while she tried situating herself. Over the couse of time, she knew that he had a slight crush on her. At first, Lucy didn't think much of it, but she noticed it more and more every day.
Lucy had thought about the idea of being with Hibiki, but for some reason, she couldn't even bear the idea. She couldn't imagine herself with him.
She shook the thoughts out of her head and moved up to tie up her blonde hair. She glanced at her reflection in the mirror and made a face. When did she get so tired looking?
"Well, Lucy. Today's another day," she muttered to herself. She looked at her wrist to see the crescent moon mark that she had discovered the day she had gotten back to my village. She guessed she had gotten it during her memory loss. Whenever she traced the edges of the mark, a sense of peace came over her that was almost impossible to describe.
"What does this mean?" Lucy mused aloud. Every night she would have nightmares and little voices in her head echoing around. Where they just memories or hallucinations? Her memories weren't coming back, and it frustrated her to no end. It had already been a month, and she still had no clue what had happened.
Lucy traipsed downstairs to see Hibiki's mother cooking a thick soup over the fire. She greeted her with a smile. "It smells delicious!" she commented happily.
She smiled back. "It's no problem sweetie, and well, don't you look perfect today!"
Lucy opened her mouth to respond modestly but a sharp pain overcame her mind and squeezed at it with wrenching force. "Ah!" she gasped.
The voice started again, and she could hear the voice of a woman, speaking in a gushing tone.
"You're perfect!"
"Very nice hair."
"A slim waist."
"Very perfect indeed, my son is so fortunate to have you!"
And then as quickly as the pain had come, it receded. Hibiki's mother came forward, "You okay, dear?"
Lucy nodded distractedly, "I'm fine. I really am. I-uh-do you need any help with breakfast?" she suggested.
She gave me a strange look. "I guess you could fetch some water from the well," she replied softly.
Lucy nodded hastily. "I'll go do that!" She burst out of the door, yanking down a pail from the hangers to bring along. She needed to get out of that hut and clearher mind. The cool air from outside calmed down the flushed feeling rising within her, and she breathed in deeply. Walking slowly towards the well, Lucy approached the stone foundation and grasped the edges tightly. Her knuckles turned white.
"Calm down, Lucy! You are fine," she hissed through clenched teeth. She filled the pail with water and with annoyance noticed that she had gotten water splashed on the front of her kimono. She placed the pail down. "Are you serious?" she sighed. "Just dry up already!" she muttered at the piece of cloth.
And then, in front of her eyes, she began to glow, a golden aura surrounding her. Panic rose in Lucy's chest, and she raised a shaky hand to touch the spot where the water had been.
It was dry.
Fear overtook Lucy, and she fell to the ground, her knees buckling. What was going on with her? The frustration and anger were causing hallucinations, voices within her head, and she was so tired of this. Why couldn't I just remember?
"Hey, you're the Bride of the Ice God, are you not?" a melodic voice came from above her. Lucy didn't bother looking up, scowling on the inside.
Seriously? It had been a month since she had gotten back, and people were still asking her that same question again and again. Lucy straightened up and caught sight of a girl that she had never seen before prior to her memory loss. Her cat-like violet ice chilled her. They made her look older than her actual size, and...not human. The girl wore a tattered black cloth and her long brown hair hung in a single braid that went down her right shoulder.
"Are you?" she demanded in an authoritative tone.
Lucy stood up trying to hide her temper. "I was," Lucy conceded. "If you want to know anything about the Ice God, I'm afraid I can't help you there," she responded briskly. "I have no recollection of my time there."
She plopped down on the bench beside the well. "Gosh that sucks. Don't you remember anything?" she asked urgently. "I mean like, do you ever see images or little voices in your heads?" she giggled as she suggested the idea.
Lucy froze. How had she known? She shrugged. "No, not really. I have to get going back now." She moved to pick up the pail of water, but the girl grabbed her wrist.
"I'm still talking to you, though!" she smiled cutely though her tone was harsh and sharp.
"Sit down!" She patted the spot next to her, and Lucy reluctantly sat. "My name's Cana, I'm 244 years old."
Lucy's head throbbed, and she let out a little gasp as pain overtook her so hard that she didn't even fully register the outrageous age that the little girl had given her. She grasped the side of her head and squeezed her eyes shut.
Voices echoed around in my head:
"How old are you?" It sounded like her voice, but it was so distorted that Lucy couldn't be sure.
"I'm 243 years old, satisfied?" a woman answered.
The pain eased suddenly, and Lucy's vision cleared as the thudding pain stopped. "Ahh…" She breathed out painfully and looked up to see the little girl looking at her with small smirk upon her face.
"It's working," she muttered quietly to herself. "It actually is…"
"What's working?" Lucy queried in her haze of confusion.
Cana looked at her. "Your memories are returning from your time with the Ice God. I just know it," she whispered softly so that only she could hear. "When you remember all of them, just know you have to call my name, and I'll be there to assist you." She grasped Lucy's hand and squeezed it tight.
"Try to remember it all," she nodded encouragingly.
Lucy yanked her hand back. "What are you saying? Who are you? What the hell is your problem?" The questions flew out of her mouth in a flurry. "If you know what happened to me, why the hell can't you just tell me!" she insisted in a hoarse whisper.
Her eyes flickered back to meet hers. "Even if I tell you, you can't possibly remember the emotions," she replied. Turning to leave, she glanced back one more time. "Remember, you just have to call my name."
The blonde-haired girl walked further away, but it suddenly hit Lucy. "Hey!" she called out desperately. She turned, curiously and, Lucy ran up to catch up to her.
"Just one question," Lucy panted out. "Do you know what this means?" She lifted up her wrist to show her the crescent mark upon her skin.
Cana's eyes widened as she caught sight of it, and she reached up to trace the edge of the mark, but she quickly withdrew her fingers as if she had been electrocuted. "Tsk! What the hell…" she hissed out. But a smile quickly replaced the grimace. "It just means that the bond has kept strong after all this time," she murmured in amazement.
"What bond?" Lucy almost bellowed out in frustration at her cryptic answer.
The little girl just smiled mysteriously. "That is one question that'll have to be discovered yourself. Trust me though; it's not a bad thing, far from it, actually. Here," she pulled out something from her kimono and placed it in her hand. Lucy saw that it was a bright hairpin with light blue coloring and crystals adorning the surface.
Lucy took the hairpin and placed it into her updo gently. She turned back to the girl to thank her, but she was gone. Lucy was all alone near the well with only the wind brushing through her hair as a soft comfort of company.
Lisanna - Present
"I didn't talk to her for very long," Cana tossed her hair to the side. "Being in that child's form was getting claustrophobic." She shuddered and combed out her long hair with a comb. "Plus, I think that if I had spoken to her for a second longer, I would've been tempted to spill out her memories."
Lisanna nodded in understanding, "I see what you mean. I would've felt the same way, except I would've cracked and told her everything."
She snorted. "Yeah, no kidding. I was on the verge of screaming out, 'You're Gray's bride! You're in love with him! You're going to have little immortal babies with him!' But- I didn't," she surmised with a regretful look upon her face. "You should have seen this mangy mutt trying to court her, it was disgusting." She wrinkled her nose. "Compared to Gray," she sniffed, "He would lose in a heartbeat. I wanted to beat the crap out of that human!" She clenched her fists together and her eyes burned with a raging fire.
Lisanna cinched the bridge of her nose with two fingers in exasperation, "Thank god you didn't. That would've scared her away for sure. Did you give her the comb?"
Cana nodded with a satisfied smile upon her face. "Of course, I did. It'll strengthen her connection with the supernatural world and speed up her memory recovery process. I feel very diabolical today and that-" she eyed me and waggled her eyebrows, "-is a sign of accomplishment." She got up and moved towards the door.
"Hey," Lisanna frowned. "Where are you going now?"
She rolled her eyes. "Where else? I'm going to talk Gray into visiting Lucy in the Mortal World."
Worry instantly filled her mind. "Are you sure that's such a good idea? He's been locked up in his room. He won't eat, he won't talk to anybody. Is it such a good idea to goad him on?" Lisanna pressed the witch.
Cana raised a hand, "I got this- don't worry about it. All I'm hoping is to plant a seed in his mind. If he encounters Lucy, hopefully that'll trigger all her memories to return. That's all I'm hoping for."
Lisanna laughed.
"What's so funny?" Cana demanded.
"I've never seen you so passionate about something like this." She smiled. "I like this side of you."
Cana scoffed, waving a hand. "Please, it's my pleasure. If I see Lucy end up with that Hibiki character, then I will kill myself." She mimed slitting her throat and stepped out of the door, determined to get Gray down to the Mortal World.
Hope you enjoyed. Please read and review - it would be much appreciated!
Have a nice day :)
