This Xander and Cordelia materialized in a frozen tundra.
"Holy gods, Xander! Where the Hell did we end up this time!" Cordelia yelled, wrapping her arms around herself as the cold immediately made its presence known.
"I don't know and the chances of there being any kind of civilization around here are slim to none." He replied. He was about to jump them out of there when something streaked across the sky and landed not far from them, less then half a mile probably.
"What was that?!" Cordelia exclaimed.
"It could be a small plane crashing." Xander answered. "It's too dark to get a good look at it. Someone may be in trouble. We're not going to die from the cold, Cordy. But it's possible there's someone is in there and they survived the crash. The chances of them surviving the cold are really slim."
"You're right. On both counts. Alright, let's see if someone did survive. And just because I can't live with myself if I don't try doesn't mean I'm not going to spend the whole time complaining, just so you know."
"You wouldn't be Cordelia Chase if you didn't." He tucked the control device into its pocket and set off in the direction of the crash. Fortunately for them, it wasn't storming. Just a very cold, clear night. It took about fifteen minutes for them to reach the site of the crash.
"It's not a plane." Xander observed when he saw it. "But it might be something like an escape pod."
"You mean like from a spaceship or something?" Cordelia asked, eying. "Do you think there could be an alien in there?"
"We've met both friendly and non friendly aliens on this trip. Unless whatever or whoever is in there tries to kill us, I think we should go on the assumption that it's just someone possibly injured, who at the very least, is trapped on a frozen tundra. We know a little bit about treating injuries thanks to Xena. So, I say we check to see if anyone is alive in there."
"I agree." Cordelia nodded and the two of them moved closer, just as the pod started to open. When the door seemed to jam, Xander grabbed it and tried to push it open more. Something brushed against his hand. It felt metallic and he thought it might be something that had jarred loose from the crash. He managed to get the door of the pod open and found something surprising.
"Cordy, it's a baby animal. Why the Hell would someone put a baby animal in an escape pod?!"
"Why kind of animal is it?" Trying to see into the pod.
"I really can't tell, it's all shadows in there."
"Xander, it could be injured. It would have no way of holding onto anything as it crashed."
"Moving it might be a bad idea. I don't smelling any blood, but it could be injured internally. I need to start carrying a flashlight. Professor Arturo was right when he said they needed to consider the wider implications of survival. So do we. Next jump I'm building a pocket and putting survival gear in it. Not that that does us any good right now."
Cordelia, thinking the little animal might be scared, reached into the pod and gently petted it.
"Be careful." Xander warned. "I heard injured or scared animals can try to bite. Not because they want to hurt anyone, but because they want to protect themselves."
"If I can calm you down when you're hyenaed out, I should be able to handle a baby animal. Poor little guy, if it wasn't for his fur, he'd be in worse shape then we are. Xander, whether he's hurt or not, we can't leave him here. We need to take him with us when we jump. If he is hurt, we can find a vet to help him."
"I agree. This definitely one of those I could never live with myself if I didn't try, instances. The little guy seems to be responding to you. Maybe if you very carefully lift him out." A sudden light show had him looking up and out over the tundra.
"Cordy, those look like lasers. I've seen plenty of scifi shows that use them as weapons. Someone may be coming for the pod."
"Xander, we don't know what the situation is here. For all we know, there could be a war going on. If this is an escape pod and it came from a ship, those could be enemy soldiers fighting each other. They may assume whoever is in the pod is an enemy. How are they going to react to finding a baby instead?"
"I don't know, hopefully positively. Cordy!" Xander suddenly stiffened as he got a good look at what was fighting. "Is it my imagination or are those dinosaur sized machines fighting each other?! Aside from the movie Pacific Rim, I've never seen anything like those things."
"Pacific Rim? Another of your scifi geek shows?"
"Yes, where human build giant machines to put them on an equal footing with colossal sea monster that come from an interdimensional portal that forms under the ocean. I don't think we're in Pacific Rim, but those giant machines were seeing over might be something similar. I think it's time we go, this is probably more then we can deal. Given the size of those machines, whatever they might battling could be just as big. We might be able to injure them, but kill I doubt it."
Cordelia gently gathered the small animal into her arms. "I'm not leaving without him, Xander. He needs help." She insisted.
"I wasn't about to suggest it. A baby animal is definitely not the same thing a dinosaur sized machine." He pulled the control device out and putting one hand on Cordelia's shoulder, pressed the button. And electric tingle and the world shifted.
