Connor watched as the small council met, his eyes scanning the room as each member took their seat. He couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as he sat amongst these powerful men, who held the fate of the Seven Kingdoms in their hands.

As the meeting began, Connor listened intently to the discussions. His father, the king, spoke with authority as he addressed the various issues plaguing the kingdom. Money problems, rebellions, and the troublesome actions of his brother, Prince Daemon, were all on the agenda.

Connor had always looked up to his uncle, but he couldn't help but feel disappointed by his recent actions. The news of Daemon leading a small army of gold cloaks had shocked him, and he wondered why he hadn't seen his uncle in the council chambers today.

As the meeting continued, Otto HighTower, the king's right-hand man, brought up the issue of succession. Connor's heart skipped a beat as he heard his name being mentioned. His father believed that he should be the one to take the throne once he passed on.

But Connor couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had never considered himself to be king material, and the thought of ruling over the Seven Kingdoms filled him with anxiety. He was about to speak up, but his father silenced him with a stern look.

'Listen carefully, my son,' the king said. 'This is where decisions are made for the best of the kingdom and its people. Your duty as a member of the royal family is to serve your people, and that includes taking on the responsibility of ruling.'

Connor was taken aback by his father's words. He had always been content with his role as a prince, but he never imagined that he would be expected to become king one day. He looked at Otto, hoping for some support, but the man's expression was unreadable.

'I understand your doubts, Connor,' the king continued. 'But I have faith in your abilities. You have been raised to be a leader, and I know you will make the right decisions for our kingdom.'

But just as the king finished speaking, Connor made a shocking announcement.

'Father, I appreciate your trust in me, but I have received a better offer elsewhere,' he said boldly.

The small council was stunned by his words, and even Otto seemed taken aback. The king raised an eyebrow, his curiosity piqued.

'And where would this offer be coming from?' he asked.

Connor took a deep breath before answering. 'The Citadel has offered me a position as a maester. I believe I can serve our kingdom better in that role but also my vampire friend as offered her hand in marriage."

The council murmured in surprise, and the king's face softened. He knew his son had a passion for knowledge and learning, and he couldn't deny that being a maester would be a valuable contribution to the kingdom.

'I understand your decision, my son,' the king said, placing a hand on Connor's shoulder. 'But know that the offer to become king will always stand. The throne will be waiting for you whenever you are ready.'

Connor felt a sense of relief wash over him. He knew he had made the right decision, and his father's understanding and support meant everything to him.

Otto, on the other hand, was not as easily convinced. He demanded to speak to the king in private, and the two men left the council chambers, leaving Connor alone with his thoughts.

As he made his way out of the room, Connor couldn't help but feel grateful for the small council and their dedication to the Seven Kingdoms. And although he may not be taking the throne, he knew that his contributions as a maester would be just as important in ensuring the prosperity of his people.
