Chapter 5

The meal finally finished and the dwarves left the table and began walking about.

Bilbo grabbed a doily from Nori. "Excuse me, that is a doily, not a dishcloth!" Bilbo said rather exasperated.

Rin turned her head slightly as she watched what happened. She pursed her lips together rather concerned knowing that it wasn't very nice of what they were doing, but she really couldn't say much of anything without getting into trouble.

"But it's full of holes!" Bofur said, looking at Bilbo.

"It's supposed to look like that, it's crochet," Bilbo said, defending himself.

Oh, and a wonderful game it is too, if you got the balls for it."

"Bebother and confusticate these dwarves!" Bilbo said, rather frustrated.

Rin slowly got up to her feet and walked, biting her lower lip as she saw Gandalf come up to Bilbo.

"My dear Bilbo, what on earth is the matter?" Gandalf questioned looking at the poor hobbit.

"What's the matter? I'm surrounded by dwarves. What are they doing here?" Bilbo questioned, rather irritated that he was surrounded by dwarves.

"Oh, they're quite a merry gathering, once you get used to them," Gandalf said nonchalantly.

Nori had a chain of sausages over his shoulders, and Bofur grabbed them from him. The two of them played tug of war with the sausage.

Bilbo let out a frustrated breath. "I don't want to get used to them. The state of my kitchen! There's mud trod into the carpet, they've pi-pillaged the pantry. I'm not even going to tell you what they've done in the bathroom; they've all but destroyed the plumbing. I don't understand what they're doing in my house!"

"Excuse me. I'm sorry to interrupt, but what should I do with my plate?" Ori questioned nervously as he came up to the angry hobbit.

"Here you go, Ori, give it to me," Fili said taking the plate from Ori and throwing it to his brother, who threw it behind his back to Bifur, who was standing at the sink in the kitchen

Bifur caught it behind his back, without even looking at it.

Kili, FIli, and the other dwarves began throwing the plates, bowls, and utensils to each other, eventually throwing them to the sink to be washed.

As the dishware flew through the air, Gandalf and Rin ducked to avoid getting hit.

"Oh!" Gandalf said as he got lower.

"Excuse me, that's my mother's West Farthing crockery, it's over a hundred years old!"

The dwarves at the table began rhythmically drumming on the table with utensils and their fists.

"And can-can you not do that? You'll blunt them!"

"Ooh, d'hear that, lads? He says we'll blunt the knives." Bofur said to the crew.

Rin bit her lower lip softly as she watched. She knew that she would be in for a treat with this performance.

Kili began singing and the others joined in with him, as they continued to throw dishware.

"Blunt the knives, bend the forks

Smash the bottles and burn the corks

Chip the glasses and crack the plates

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!

Cut the cloth and tread on the fat

Leave the bones on the bedroom mat

Pour the milk on the pantry floor

Splash the wine on every door

Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl

Pound them up with a thumping pole

When you've finished, if any are whole

Send them down the hall to roll

...

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!"

Rin followed Bilbo huffing in anger to only find that all of the dishes were stacked neatly and cleanly.

The dwarves and Gandalf laughed.

Rin bit her lip softly trying her best to keep herself from laughing.

Suddenly there were three loud knocks on the door causing everyone to go silent.

Rin turned her head as the color slightly drained from her face. She couldn't help but wonder if he would be willing to allow her to join them on this quest. She fiddled around nervously with her ring as she stood there.

"He is here," Gandalf said, removing his pipe from his mouth.

They went to the door and opened it.

Thorin entered Bag End slowly. "Gandalf. I thought you said this place would be easy to find. I lost my way, twice. Wouldn't have found it at all had it not been for that mark on the door."

Rin hid behind Gandalf knowing that he would soon introduce her to Thorin, but it didn't help her racing heart to know that it would take time for him to trust her.

"Mark? There's no mark on that door. It was painted a week ago!" Bilbo was completely befuddled by what Thorin had said. He knew for a fact that there was no mark on his door.

"There is a mark; I put it there myself. Bilbo Baggins, allow me to introduce the leader of our company, Thorin Oakenshield." Gandalf said, looking knowingly at Bilbo.

"So, this is the Hobbit. Tell me, Mr. Baggins, have you done much fighting?" Thorin questioned as he looked Bilbo over as he removed his coat.

"Pardon me?" Bilbo asked, his brows furrowed in confusion.

"Ax or sword? What's your weapon of choice?"

"Well, I have some skill at Conkers, if you must know, but I fail to see why that's relevant," Bilbo said, taking a breath and standing his ground as he looked at Thorin.

"Thought as much. He looks more like a grocer than a burglar."

The dwarves all laughed at what Thorin had said.

Thorin then notices the young woman standing behind Gandalf. He straightened up as he looked at Gandalf. "And who is this?" He questioned his words coming out fairly harshly.

"Ah. This is Rin, a Ranger of the North."

Rin moved slowly forward as Thorin continued to look at her.

"And why is this woman with us?" Thorin questioned looking at Gandalf, his eyes narrowed.

"I went ahead and found another member of this company. She knows of many pathways that can lead us safely."

Thorin's eyes went to the black-clad woman. "What is your weapon of choice?"

"Bow and arrow and sword," Rin said, speaking up fairly calmly knowing that it was the best choice for her to do so. She didn't need him to know that she was indeed scared of him.

Thorin looked her over before looking at Gandalf. "And you want a woman to join this cause?"

Gandalf nodded his head as everyone went to the dining table.

Rin bit her lip softly as she followed everyone into the dining room.

"You did well," Gandalf said softly, looking at her.

Rin looked up at Gandalf. "He won't want me on this…"

"Leave that up to me."

Rin nodded her head softly.

This is the end of Chapter 5. I hope that you guys enjoyed it. I'm going to be adding Rin in, but right now I need to kind of get through this part of the movie without having trouble trying to figure out how to get Rin into the story. I promise that there will be more Rin-involved chapters coming up soon. Since she needs character growth. Please leave a review and let me know what you think. I'll try to update you as soon as I can. Until next time.
