Turns out, Nighteye COULD avoid it. Well, not entirely. When it came to gatling he wasn't able to build up power with leftovers without being hit, the timing took too long, so the attacks were small and weak enough they could be dodged.
And the big tornado move he made from his uppercut? Nighteye just stood there, grabbing onto random objects and keeping a distance until he was open, then using the air to hit him once more. Apparently the man had an iron grip as well as a future quirk.
The only time he got even close to touching the man was when he put his hand on one of the Bunny-sensei posters … Nighteye didn't take it easy that day. He was lucky Recovery-nurse was understanding. Iruma at least tore a tiny piece of the man's coat off, so he counted it as progress!
Maybe this would be better if he talked to All Might about it, but he didn't want to go to his teacher until after he beat the man. It felt like something he should brag about."Alright, that's enough for today." The man said. "You'll be patrolling with Lemillion today, keeping an eye out around the city for petty crime. You remember the rules, correct?"
"Yes, stay close to Kemillion, don't walk off on your own, and avoid the people in bird masks." He didn't need to be reminded of that last one. "I'll have my own on the entire day."
"I would've never guessed you were responsible for the greatest blunder in Yakuza history, but here you are." He didn't really comprehend it himself, there were just some sirens, running, guns, and a case. "Now I'll head off to gather evidence. Centerpieder is in charge today." Oh yeah, Centipede Man, one of the three actual NICE people who worked here.
Training with Night Eye may have been a close second to the worst time of his life, nothing compared to All Forty One 'healing him', but everyone else was decent at least. "Hey kid, doing alright?" Bubble Girl waved from her desk.
"Yeah, I still can't hit the jerk, but I'm getting close." He sighed. "Why do you work for him?"
"He's good, he pays well … and he's nice when you least expect it."
"I don't expect it at all, and nothing's happened yet." The girl always seemed to laugh whenever he was around. Apparently that was something Night Eye could never do, so he had an accomplishment to hold over him!
"Yeah, I don't know you're whole deal with it, but Night Eyes is like the biggest All Might fan you'll ever meet. Apparently he followed the man around for months until he made him his sidekick."
"Really?" He never thought All Might could get so popular. "What happened to make All Might fire him?"
"A falling out of sorts." She shrugged. "Apparently they argued over something. The closest I got was that All Might was running himself into the ground."
Running himself to the ground…that meant All Might was getting weaker back then, and that happened when All Forty One took out his stomach. "I'll have to talk to Bunny-sensei later."
"Kid..you're really too much for me to handle…" Bubble girl snorted again. Again, something to hold over Night Eye!
"So if you're calling yourself a lemon, then what's the number for? I don't think they're that expensive." Suzuki asked him as they walked down the street.
"Actually I named it off of Remioromen, a band my dad used to show me when I was little." It was a fun time, even if mom wasn't around. "The Million part is my promise!"
"A promise to play a million songs?" He asked with sparkly eyes. "Are you a singer?"
"Well, as amazing as my vocal chops are, I've placed all my dedication to being a hero." Mirio smiled. "It's my goal as a hero. I know it sounds a little silly to say I can save everyone, but with this number, I promise to save at least one million people! POWER!"
"That's a lot of people!" He shouted. "That's more than I can count! And I once had to count out a thousand pennies!" Concern bubbled up for a second, but that seemed like a long story … eh screw it, they had time.
"A thousand pennies?"
"Yeah, I worked at this bank and this lady came up to me to deposit all of that in change, so I had to count them one by one. I would've got it done in an hour, but this purple kid kept coming up to me to ask questions and made this rock guy really mad. I spent the whole day counting it, and got so tired I ran out of steam and needed a steam transplant."
"... How would they put the steam in-forget it." Rabbit holes were never a good thing to fall down in. "What about your name, it has nothing to do with wolves."
"People said my original costume was bad, so Mei just sort of took over everything. Guess she really likes dogs."
"How bad was it?"
"It wasn't bad at all! My domino mask and cape was great! I made it in my tent." That was it? This guy kept getting more funny and concerning all at once.
"Looks like that's a fact you needed to wolf-down." The boy laughed once more. "So why Kettei?"
"Well, before Bunny-sensei found me, I never really knew what to do with my life or had a goal for myself. Even with all the training, I still wasn't sure. But everyone kept saying I was so determined. I never knew what they were talking about until the Sports Festival, when Shoto needed my help. I planned to help someone, and it felt great giving everything I had to complete that goal."
"So you felt determination for the first time and wanted more of it? Sounds like a great origi-" The conversation came to a halt as a little girl fell over, hitting their boots. White hair, small, horn on head, bandages, ragged clothes. All terrible signs. He checked where she was running from and found … shit, not good.
Eri looked at who she hit. It was a cape and a blue wolf man. Chisaki always said to never talk to people in capes, but never anything about a wolf man. She ran behind him and clutched his leg in an effort to be hidden. "Oh, are you playing hide and seek?" The wolf asked her. "I don't think my leg is a good place, maybe the mailbox or something."
"Eri, come back here." Chisaki came by, causing the boy to look and tense. "Oh, it seems you found my daughter." She wasn't his daughter, she was scum. She killed her father, and now she could never hug him again.
"Your….daughter?" Wolfman asked. It almost sounded like he didn't believe Chisaski. Please, don't believe him. She was scum, but don't believe what he told him.
"Yes, I was disciplining her for not paying attention to the road, but she got scared and ran off. I'm truly sorry, gentlemen." He let off a light bow.
"Well you should look both ways, otherwise a car tires to turn you into a pancake." Wolf man said. "It's nice to meet you mister, i'm I-" The wolf had a hand grab their shoulder.
"He's Kettei, a new hero." The Cape man told them. "I'm Lemillion, we're on patrol. You haven't seen anything suspicious around here, have you sir?"
"No, nothing I can say for certain, although you two could help me out a bit." Chisaki held his hands together. Never a good sign.
"Oh, alright then." Kettei kneeled down. "Come on, I know he might have been mean but-"
"Please don't let me go." She muttered, holding him tightly. "Please help me."
"..." Wolfman looked at her, then back at Chisaki. "She looks injured." He spoke calmly.
"She's pretty clumsy. I've tried to raise her right, but she just never seems to listen."
"Okay Kettei, we better head back before-" Cape man tried to reach, but Wolf man didn't listen.
"My parents were pretty bad themselves, they never treated me when I was hurt." He spoke. "You have taken her to one, right?"
"I happen to be a doctor. I know how to treat wounds."
"These bandages look like they were rushed-wrapped around her." Wolf Man held her up. He felt warm…it was nice to be in his arms.
Chisaki sighed. "You know, maybe it's best we take this conversation into the alley, right down here." He spoke, gesturing his hands to follow him into the darkness.
"N..No!" She shouted, leaping out of her arms. "I'll, I'll go back, daddy." It felt wrong to say that, but he wouldn't hurt anybody if she said it.
"Hey are you-" Wolfman … Kettei was held back by Cape man. "... If you're sure." She was, he would kill them otherwise.
"It was a pleasure meeting you Lemillion, Kettei, thank you for your cooperation." Chisaki waved them away, before grabbing her arms. "That's a good girl, Eri. You didn't kill anyone today. You did good."
She was a monster…if she didn't run away, she would've killed Kettei and Cape man. It would've been her fault…everything bad was her fault.
"Repeat to me the rules I gave you, would you kindly?" Mirai asked, staring down at the newest Work Study.
"Don't walk off on your own, stay close, and don't run into bird masks." The kid disrespectfully rolled his eyes.
"And yet you not only ran into one, you antagonized him." Mirai groaned. "And it just happened to be the leader of the Yakuza as well. Do you know what would have happened if you actually went through with this?"
"I would have saved her."
"You would have either died or been fined." He glared, looking down. "We don't have enough evidence to arrest the Shie Hagaisei, they were absolutely free and you would have been forced to let him go as YOU got in trouble."
"No evide-Eri ran to me crying asking for help. She was terrified of that man!"
"No judge would take the testimony of a minor as evidence." He stated. "I've been working on this case for months. It takes time, energy, and careful construction." Mirai tried to drill this into the boy's head. "The world doesn't work just because you want to 'help this person because they gave sad eyes'. If you did that you would've died a long time ago."
"I've been doing that for most of my life, and I'm just fine." Suzuki growled.
"The worst case scenario is he could have killed you." He stated, raising his finger to cut the boy off. "There is no maybe, there is no buts, this man has the experience and the quirk to not only trap you, but hold the perfect hostage, and kill you without any evidence for the police to find."
"Sir, please, this wasn't anything we could've expected." Mirio defended. "We didn't even know Chisiaki had a daughter-."
"I'm not blaming you for running into him." He told Mirio. "And I'm not blaming him either. I'm blaming him for risking everything we've been trying to do." He stared the boy in the eyes. "This is an order. You will not go after them until I give you the go, is that understood?" Suzuki just growled. "Do I need to beg you?"
"Screw you." The boy said darkly. "A little girl covered in bandages, crying, just asked for help. If you're choosing to ignore that, then you're not a hero. You're not even a good person." … He knew he wasn't at this point in life, but it was for the best case possible outcome.
"That's a burden I'm willing to take. Go back to school, you're done for the day." He turned away, leaving the boy to his own devices.
"Iruma…" Mirio called out to him.
"Don't talk to me." Suzuki walked off without turning around. "There's someone else I need to see."
All Might tensed, tea with Nedzu was a nightmare. So much lecture, so many facts. Please god, give him something, anything, to get out of this! The door slammed open, an angry Suzuki glaring at him. "Why didn't you tell me Nighteye was such an asshole!?"
"Look at the time, better go." Nedzu jumped into the vent, running off, leaving him with a very angry successor to look after at the moment … dodged a bullet!
"Ah…I take it Work Studies haven't been going well?" He tried to pacify the situation. Toshinori knew Work Studies were a bad idea for first years, but Majority rules and all that jazz.
"It's the worst! Everyone else is nice, but Night Eye, he just … AGGGHH! Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!" Iruma punched three holes in the wall. "Is that why you never talked about him?"
"Partially. Truth be told, I was hoping you'd never meet him until you've mastered One For All." He offered the boy some tea. "He's always a bit critical of perfection. Criticized me a few times when he felt it was necessary … never should have trusted that Nigerian prince."
"Well, he's been doing nothing BUT criticize me, and he thinks by constantly saying I'm going to fail he'll convince me to give Mirio my quirk." Iruma's gaze turned even angrier. "That's another thing, did you know Mirio was trained to take your power when you met me? It's the only thing he talks about aside from you and me."
"Yes, I was aware, but I've never been comfortable with Mirai taking this approach." Toshi groaned. "Even if I never met you, I would've been hesitant. He seemed too much like me."
"Saving people with a smile, a bit naive at times, super strong?" He wasn't sure how much he liked this 'aware' version of Suzuki.
"Yes, in other words, he seemed too much like a direct copy. Someone who would've done good with the quirk, but probably would've made the same mistakes too, and that's not something I wanted to repeat." He sighed. "It's why in the end, I entrusted you to take on One For All. You've accomplished so much in your own way."
"Yep, saving people with a smile, people calling me naive, and proving myself a super strong guy!" … Okay, take back the 'aware' part. Maybe the blue hair didn't clue him in on the similarities. At least he had self preservation, something Recovery Girl repeatedly yelled at him for not having. "So was Night Eye always this big of a jerk? He always acts like what he says is the only thing that matters."
"He was a kind man once, still is deep down." Toshinori explained. "Problem is when everything you try doesn't change the future, emotion just tends to … lessen. He's more methodical, but he still wants to do right."
"You mean I could've ended up like that if I didn't try to stay positive when everything went wrong!?" Nighteye was a bit of an extreme case, but he understood the concern.
"You still would have wanted to help people." Toshinori sighed, leaning back. "He just focused on the big picture while I focused on the smaller one. A duo of brains and brawn."
"So you were a good team together." Iruma nodded. "And then you fired him … was it because of All Forty One?"
"Yes, except he quit." Iruma leaned closer. "When I defeated All For One the first time, I was hospitalized for days, and during that time, he used his quirk on me, the one thing I made him swear to never do when I hired him." He clutched his wound. "He told me I should've retired then, but people needed saving. I ignored him, even when he said I would die a horrible death if I continued."
"He was wrong about you dying though, you survived fighting All Forty One." Oh … right.
"... Not entirely." The boy blinked. "It gets harder to narrow it down the farther he looks, but we know that I'm going to die within the year." He had to be honest.
"Then don't die." Iruma told him as if it was that simple. "Dying is stupid, and if I stopped doing something just because someone said I was going to die, I would have a lot of unfinished jobs."
"You're really something kid." He smiled. "I never planned on it, just getting you aware."
"Good, because I don't care what he or anybody else says about the future. It's my life, my quirk, I get to decide what to do with it." His successor stood tall with those determined eyes that inspired him to keep living. "I'm going to prove Night Eye wrong, and if there's a bad future ahead, I'll break right through it!"
