Arc 1: First Real Mission

Chapter 3: The Uchiha Massacre!

Naruto put his book back and closed his eyes. He quickly fell asleep. However, tonight wasn't going to be a good sleep with sweet dreams. Tonight was time to see it all over again.

June 12th, Age 59 (4 years ago)

The sun was setting over Konoha, casting a warm golden glow on the village. Naruto Uchiha and his cousin Sasuke had just finished another day at the academy and were eager to leave. As they stepped out into the fresh air, their excitement was palpable. They couldn't wait to train with the prodigious Itachi and the skilled Shisui Uchiha.

Shisui had taught the boys Phoenix Flower Jutsu last week and this week Naruto hoped for another killer jutsu. They hadn't seen the man of the Shunshin in a few days and were excited to tell the teenager about their progress in the academy.

"Come on, Naruto, let's hurry up! I don't want to keep Itachi and Shisui waiting!" Sasuke said, his impatience evident. Sasuke was hoping the rumors of Shisui's disappearance that took place three days ago didn't happen.

"Alright, alright! Hold your horses, Sasuke!" Naruto replied, a grin plastered on his face.

The two young boys made their way through the village, each step bringing them closer to their destination. The streets were bustling with activity, the sounds of laughter and conversation filling the air. They passed by various food stalls, the mouthwatering aromas of freshly cooked ramen and grilled meat teasing their senses.

As they walked through Konoha, a familiar figure caught their attention. Mito Uzumaki stood by the playground, a hopeful expression on her face.

"Naruto, can you play with me for a little while?" Mito asked, her voice quivering slightly.

Naruto hesitated for a moment, torn between his loyalty to his cousin and his innate kindness. It was evident that Mito didn't have many friends, and he couldn't bear to see her sad.

"Of course, Mito! I'll play with you for a bit," Naruto said, flashing a warm smile.

Sasuke's face contorted with irritation, but he didn't say anything. He knew that Itachi and Shisui would only teach him if Naruto was present, so he had no choice but to wait.

The playground was a vibrant place, filled with children of all ages enjoying themselves. The sound of their laughter rang through the air as they played on swings, slides, and monkey bars. The vivid colors of the playground equipment contrasted against the lush green of the surrounding trees and bushes.

As Naruto and Mito chased each other across the playground, Sasuke leaned against a tree, arms crossed, his annoyance growing by the minute. He watched with a scowl as Naruto and Mito played tag, their laughter carrying on the breeze.

"Naruto, you're it!" Mito squealed, her face flushed with excitement.

"You won't get away, Mito!" Naruto shouted, his eyes sparkling with determination.

Sasuke couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as he watched the two interact. He had always been envious of ability to form bonds with others easily, however, he couldn't understand why his cousin would choose to play with Mito instead of training with his brother.

As the minutes ticked by, Sasuke's frustration reached a boiling point. He couldn't take it any longer.

"Naruto!" he yelled, his voice strained. "We need to go! We have training with Itachi, remember?"

Naruto looked over at Sasuke, his face filled with regret. "I'm sorry, Sasuke. I didn't mean to keep you waiting. Let's go."

Mito's face fell, but she understood and was grateful for the time Naruto gave her. "It's okay, Naruto. Thank you for playing with me. I'll see you tomorrow at the academy."

With a final wave, Naruto and Sasuke left the playground, their footsteps echoing as they headed towards their training session. Unbeknownst to them, the events that would be unveiled to them that night would change their lives forever, leaving an indelible mark on their young minds and shaping their future in ways they could never have imagined.

As Naruto and Sasuke approached the Uchiha compound, an unsettling scent of blood wafted through the air, making their hearts race with fear. The once inviting gates now stood ominously open, revealing the lifeless bodies of the guards, brutally sliced down in a gruesome scene.

The boys' faces contorted with worry as they took in the horrifying sight. They broke into a run, their footsteps echoing through the silent streets of the Uchiha Compound. As they moved closer to Sasuke's house, more bodies came into view, each one more disturbing than the last.

Upon reaching Sasuke's house, they burst through the door, their breaths heavy with panic. Without hesitation, they ran straight to Mikoto and Fugaku's room, hoping to find them safe. Instead, they were greeted with a sight that would forever be etched into their memories.

Standing in the center of the room, surrounded by the lifeless bodies of their loved ones, was none other than Itachi Uchiha. His Mangekyou Sharingan spun to life as he turned to face the young boys, a chilling smirk on his face.

"Why, Itachi?! Why would you do this to our clan?" Sasuke demanded, his voice shaking with a mixture of fear and anger.

Naruto remained speechless, his body paralyzed by shock. The metallic scent of his aunt and uncle's blood filled his nostrils, overwhelming and nauseating. The room seemed to close in on him, the walls stained with the remnants of the massacre.

The sound of Sasuke's screams snapped Naruto out of his stupor. Itachi had cast a genjutsu on his younger brother, forcing him to relive the horrors of the night. Naruto's eyes flashed with anger, and his two tomoe Sharingan spun to life. Overcome with rage, he charged at Itachi, determined to avenge his family.

"Prepare to pay for what you've done!" Naruto shouted, his voice filled with unbridled fury. Itachi could see Naruto's chakra illuminating off his body. The aura seemed darker than another Uchiha he recently acquainted himself with.

However, Naruto's abilities were no match for Itachi's skill and experience. The older Uchiha easily deflected each of Naruto's attacks, his chilling laughter echoing through the room. He taunted Naruto, calling him weak, foolish, and naive as he brutally beat the young boy down.

"You're nothing but a half-blooded disgrace to our clan," Itachi sneered, his words cutting like a knife. "It's because of you I can't spend time with my own little brother!" Itachi struck Naruto with a kick. "It's because of you, our clan is falling apart!" The teen Uchiha said as he punched Naruto in the gut.

With each blow, Naruto's body weakened, and his vision blurred. With each insult from the man that he looked up to most, Naruto's pride and confidence broke piece by piece. Despite the pain, he refused to give up, his determination fueled by the love for his family. But it wasn't enough.

"I...It...Itachi please... stop." Naruto begged as he was physically tortured some more.

Itachi, with a cruel grin, finally unleashed the Tsukuyomi on Naruto. The genjutsu trapped the boy in a never-ending loop of Fugaku and Mikoto's deaths, each replay more gruesome than the last. The screams of anguish and the sickening crunch of bones filled his ears, while the taste of bile and blood lingered in his mouth. The horrifying images imprinted themselves onto his retinas, leaving Naruto broken and defeated.

As his body finally succumbed to the relentless torment, Naruto collapsed to the ground, his eyes losing focus. Itachi's laughter echoed in the background, a haunting reminder of the nightmare that had just unfolded.

The Uchiha Massacre would leave a lasting impact on both Naruto and Sasuke, forever shaping their lives and forging a dark path for them to walk. The scars of that night would never fully heal, and the inseparable cousins would be left to pick up the shattered pieces of their hearts.

Some time later

Naruto's consciousness slowly returned, the sound of beeping machines and the faint scent of antiseptic pulling him back to reality. He blinked his eyes open, trying to make sense of his surroundings. At first, everything was a blur, but as his vision adjusted, he saw his mother, Akane Uchiha, sitting by his bedside, her face streaked with tears.

As Naruto tried to speak, his throat felt unbearably dry, the words refusing to form. Akane noticed her son's awakening and, with a mixture of relief and urgency, rushed out of the room to fetch a nurse.

Naruto's eyes scanned the sterile hospital room, eventually landing on his cousin Sasuke, who sat in the next bed. Sasuke's face was a blank canvas, the raw emotions of their shared tragedy carefully hidden behind a mask of stoicism. Naruto's heart ached for his cousin, and as the memories of the Uchiha Massacre flooded back, he couldn't hold back the tears that welled up in his eyes.

Akane returned shortly after, accompanied by a nurse who immediately began checking Naruto's vitals. The nurse's movements were swift and efficient, her face a picture of professionalism. The quiet hum of the machines and the steady rhythm of her footsteps created a dissonant lullaby, a stark contrast to the chaos that had unfolded just days before.

The door to the room opened once more, and the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, entered. Despite the weight of the situation, his eyes were filled with compassion as he approached Naruto's bedside.

"Naruto," he began, his voice gentle, "I know you've been through a terrible ordeal. But I want you to know that we will do everything in our power to capture Itachi and bring him to justice."

Naruto's eyes met Hiruzen's, he tried to speak again, but his throat was still painfully dry, the words trapped in his parched mouth.

The nurse, noticing Naruto's struggle, handed him a glass of water. He took a small sip, the cool liquid soothing his raw throat. As he drank, the memories of the massacre continued to torment him – the smell of blood, the sound of screams, and the sight of his family's lifeless bodies.

Akane, seeing her son's pain, reached for his hand, squeezing it tightly. "It's okay, Naruto," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "We'll get through this together."

As Naruto and the others were gathered in the hospital room, the door opened once more to reveal Inoichi Yamanaka, the head of the Yamanaka clan. Hiruzen had specifically chosen Inoichi for this task due to his calm and gentle nature, particularly when dealing with children.

Inoichi approached Naruto's bed, his face a mixture of concern and empathy. "Naruto, I'm here to ask you a few questions about the night of the massacre," he began softly, careful not to overwhelm the young boy.

Naruto, eager to get answers and justice for his family, interrupted Inoichi. "How long has it been since that night?" he asked, his voice still weak from his ordeal.

Inoichi's eyes softened as he replied, "It's been an entire week, Naruto."

The revelation hit Naruto like a wave, and he took a few moments to process the information. An entire week had passed since the massacre, and it felt like it was just a day ago. Inoichi patiently waited for Naruto to compose himself, offering a comforting presence that allowed the boy to gather his thoughts.

Feeling more at ease, Naruto was ready to answer Inoichi's questions. Inoichi resumed the conversation, asking gently, "What were you and Sasuke doing before the massacre occurred?"

Naruto hesitated for a moment before answering, memories of that day flooding back. "We were playing with Mito Uzumaki at the playground," he said, his voice steady but tinged with sadness, thinking about the innocence that was lost that day.

Inoichi nodded, making a mental note of the information. "How did you and Sasuke discover the bodies?" he asked, his tone cautious but understanding.

Naruto's strong resolve to see this through helped him maintain his composure as he recounted the horrifying scene. "We walked through the gates of the Uchiha compound, and that's when we saw it all," he explained, his voice unwavering, the images of the carnage flashing through his mind.

Inoichi listened intently, his eyes filled with sadness. "Who was the culprit, or were there multiple culprits responsible for the massacre?" he inquired, hoping to gather as much information as possible.

Naruto took a deep breath before stating the name that had haunted his thoughts ever since that night. "Itachi Uchiha," he replied, the words tasting bitter on his tongue, his heart aching with betrayal and anger.

Inoichi's expression grew solemn, and he thanked Naruto for his cooperation. "I appreciate your courage in sharing this information, Naruto. It will be invaluable in our pursuit of justice," he said, offering a reassuring smile.

With a nod to the Hokage, Inoichi exited the room, leaving Naruto in the company of his loved ones. As the door closed behind him, Naruto felt a mixture of emotions – sadness, anger, and determination. He knew that the road ahead would be difficult, but he also knew that he wasn't alone.

Surrounded by his mother, cousin, and Hokage, Naruto drew strength from their unwavering support. Together, they would face the challenges ahead, united in their quest for justice and healing. The scars of the Uchiha Massacre would never fade, but they would serve as a constant reminder of the strength and resilience of the Uchiha – and Naruto and Sasuke would carry that legacy with him, always.

Three days had passed since Naruto and Sasuke were released from the hospital. Although Naruto's injuries were still bothering him, he was deemed well enough to return to the academy. As the two boys walked through the familiar halls, their classmates couldn't help but notice the significant change in their personalities.

Mito Uzumaki, in particular, was deeply affected by the transformation in her friends. She found herself increasingly worried about their well-being and, as lunch period approached, she resolved to check on them.

During class, Naruto and Sasuke remained withdrawn, not volunteering for any of Iruka's questions or engaging in their assignments. The girls in the class felt sympathy for the boys, wishing they could find a way to cheer them up. Meanwhile, the male students, envious of the attention the Uchihas were receiving, glared at them resentfully.

As lunch period began, Mito approached Naruto with determination in her eyes. "Naruto, how are you doing?" she asked gently, her voice tinged with concern.

Naruto offered no response, taking his seat and beginning to eat in silence. Mito's frustration grew until she couldn't hold it in any longer. "Naruto, please talk to me!" she demanded, her hands clenched into fists.

Naruto's glare cut through her like a knife, his Sharingan activated. "It's your fault my clan is dead," he hissed, his voice heavy with anger. "If you hadn't asked me to play tag with you, I would've been with Sasuke at the compound. We would've noticed Itachi's behavior and stopped him. Being a ninja isn't just games, Mito! You need to take this seriously because if you don't, people will die!"

His words echoed through the room, reaching the ears of every student. Mito, tears streaming down her face, ran away, her heart shattered by Naruto's outburst.

Shikamaru, who had been listening to the exchange, decided to confront Naruto. Lazily ambling over, he spoke up in defense of Mito. "Naruto, chill out. Mito had nothing to do with that deranged psychopath killing your clan," he said calmly, his eyes locked onto Naruto's. "Mito was trying to be a good friend to you, and maybe if you got off your high horse, you'd see that and realize you need friends right now. She didn't do anything wrong, and you should apologize."

Before Naruto could retort, Shikamaru turned and walked away, leaving Naruto to contemplate his words. Sasuke watched the exchange happened and was curious on Naruto's wellbeing. Sasuke hadn't seen what had happened after Itachi casted him in his genjutsu. Naruto seemed darker.

As the lunch period continued, the tension in the room remained palpable, each student lost in their thoughts about the Uchiha Massacre and the impact it had on their classmates. The once lively academy had been plunged into a somber silence, the weight of the tragedy casting a dark shadow over the hearts of all who had been touched by it.

As the school day came to a close, Naruto and Sasuke made their way towards Akane's house, their footsteps heavy with the weight of the day's events. Sasuke felt grateful that Akane had opened her home to him and had accepted the role of Acting Clan Head until he reached Chunin rank. He could sense the regret that Naruto was carrying after his outburst at Mito, and despite not being as fond of Mito as Naruto was, Sasuke knew that Shikamaru had been right – they couldn't have done anything to prevent the tragedy, at least with the facts they have.

Feeling the need to address the matter, Sasuke spoke up, his voice quiet but steady. "Naruto, how are you feeling after today?"

Naruto's response was dismissive. "It was just another day."

Sasuke narrowed his eyes, sensing that his cousin was hiding his true feelings. "Naruto, how are you doing after today, for real? I'm the only other person who knows how you feel right now." Sasuke stated.

After a moment's hesitation, Naruto admitted, "I feel like shit. I treated my friend badly because of what he did." The two boys made a silent pact, their shared goal now focused on avenging their clan by taking down Itachi.

"What did he say to you?" Naruto asked. Naruto had remembered he blanked out when Sasuke collapsed.

"He did this, to test his strength." Sasuke replied. Naruto closed his eyes and thought about it. It didn't seem real.

As Naruto and Sasuke walked through downtown Konoha, the familiar sights and sounds of the village provided a momentary distraction from their troubled thoughts. They passed by Ichiraku Ramen stand, the tantalizing aroma of steaming broth and fresh noodles drifting through the air. Laughter and conversation filled the small establishment as customers enjoyed their meals, the warm glow of the lanterns casting a cozy atmosphere. It pissed Naruto off. How could these people be so happy after such a tragedy struck Konoha. One of the founding clans had been reduced to the size of a small family.

Further along, they came across Kenshi's weapon store, the gleaming rows of kunai and shuriken displayed in the shop's window. The metallic clang of a blacksmith's hammer echoed in the background, accompanied by the occasional hiss of hot metal being quenched in water. With each strike, memories of their training sessions with Itachi and Shisui resurfaced, a sour reminder of the bond they once shared. Naruto thought back to how Shisui took them to this shop to get shurikens.

Finally, they passed the library, its grand entrance inviting knowledge seekers to explore the vast collection of scrolls and books within. The muffled rustling of paper and the soft footsteps of patrons browsing the shelves created a peaceful ambience, a stark contrast to the turmoil that gripped the young Uchiha's hearts.

Upon arriving at Akane's house, she immediately sensed that something was amiss with Naruto. "What happened at school, Naruto?" she asked, concern etched on her face.

Naruto tried to brush off her question, replying, "Nothing exciting."

Akane's expression shifted to that of a drill sergeant, and she asked again, slowly and deliberately, "Naruto, what happened at school today?"

With a deep breath, Naruto recounted the events with Mito, his voice filled with remorse. Akane wasted no time in instructing him to find Mito and apologize immediately. She pushed Naruto outside and locked the door, stating firmly through the closed door, "Once Mito comes by accepting your apology, you can come back in."

Sasuke watched the exchange with a worried expression, hoping that Naruto would find it in himself to make amends and heal the wounds that had been inflicted on his friendship with Mito. Sasuke knew Naruto to be kind, but how could one find that kindness after having his whole clan wiped out and then beat on by his mentor.

Naruto Uchiha, with a heavy heart, began his search for Mito Uzumaki. First, he headed to their favorite playground, a place filled with memories of laughter and camaraderie. As he searched every corner of the park, from the swings to the slide and the sandpit, he couldn't help but recall their shared moments of joy. But, to his dismay, Mito was nowhere to be found, and his heart grew heavier with each passing moment.

Determined to find his friend, Naruto pressed on, making his way to Ichiraku Ramen Stand, another spot where they had spent countless hours together. The warm aroma of ramen filled the air, but it did little to comfort him. Naruto scanned the area, his eyes darting from One side to the other side of the small stand, desperately hoping to spot Mito's fiery red hair. But, much like the playground, she was nowhere to be seen. A sense of dread began to settle in his chest as he realized the gravity of the situation.

With no other options left, Naruto rushed to the Hokage's office, his desperation growing. Upon arriving, he approached Hiruzen, the Third Hokage, and explained the situation. "Lord Hokage, I need your help. I got angry with Mito for no reason and hurt her feelings when she was trying to be a good friend. I said things I shouldn't have, and now I can't find her. I want to apologize and make things right."

Hiruzen took a thoughtful drag from his pipe, looking at Naruto with a mix of empathy and wisdom. "Naruto," he said, "it's important to remember that our friends are there to help us through our darkest moments. Never push them away when you need them the most." After a brief pause, the Third Hokage handed Naruto Mito's address, hoping that the young boy would learn from his mistakes. "It is a tragedy that you lost your clan, however, Mito has never had a family, aside from you and your mother." The Hokage reminded the blue eyed Uchiha.

"Thank you, Lord Hokage!" Naruto said, his voice filled with gratitude and resolve. With newfound determination, he sprinted out of the Hokage's office and ran as fast as he could towards Mito's home, ready to apologize and mend their friendship.

Naruto arrived at Mito's apartment, his heart pounding with anticipation. The sight of the damaged door instantly alarmed him, and he realized that someone might've broken in. Cautiously, he pushed the door open and stepped inside, taking in the chaotic mess that seemed out of character for Mito. The scent of fear and frustration lingered in the air, and Naruto couldn't help but worry for his friend. He searched the small two-bedroom apartment, calling out Mito's name softly, but she was nowhere to be found. Exhausted and unsure, he decided to wait for her, sitting on her bed.

Hours ticked by, and Naruto eventually succumbed to sleep, his body sinking into the soft sheets of Mito's bed, the lingering scent of her shampoo comforting him.

Mito arrived home around 2 a.m., surprised to see the sleeping figure of Naruto Uchiha on her bed. Her first thoughts were playful and naughty, quickly followed by embarrassment as she considered what he might have seen in her disheveled apartment. She gently shook him awake, and Naruto groggily stirred, blinking up at her.

"Mito, I'm so sorry for my behavior earlier," Naruto began, his voice filled with genuine remorse. "I was rude and mean during lunch, and I just wanted to apologize."

Mito, touched by his sincerity, hugged him tightly and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. The two eight-year-olds sat on her bed, their faces flushed with a mix of emotions.

"Where were you, Mito?" Naruto asked, his curiosity piqued.

"I was sitting on the First Hokage's head at the Hokage Monument," she explained. "There's a sense of peace and clarity that I find up there." Naruto nodded, understanding her need for solace.

As the night wore on, Mito began to talk about the stars and the beauty of the village, her voice a soft melody that soothed Naruto's soul. Gradually, their eyes grew heavy, and they fell asleep nestled in each other's arms, their fingers intertwined, both finding comfort and warmth in their rekindled friendship.

Naruto and Mito woke up the next morning, their faces flushing with embarrassment as they realized how close they had been while sleeping. They quickly separated, the air between them tingling with a mix of shyness and warmth. Naruto suddenly remembered that he couldn't return home yet and explained his situation to Mito. "Hey, can you come with me to see my mother? She kinda kicked me out of the house until you stop by."

Mito agreed, shaking her head in amusement. She asked Naruto to wait in the living room while she got ready. He nodded, heading to the living room and giving her some privacy.

Once Mito was ready, the pair headed towards the Uchiha residence. They walked side by side, the distance between them shrinking with each step. Unable to resist the urge to tease Naruto, Mito asked him about their close encounter while sleeping. "So, why were you holding me like that when we slept?"

Naruto's face took on a pink hue, as he stammered, "It wasn't my fault! I must've grabbed you while we were sleeping." Mito giggled and playfully teased him, saying, "Sureeee."

Embarrassed but eager to turn the tables, Naruto asked her, "How did you like sleeping like that?" Mito's face turned as red as her hair, and she squealed in embarrassment. Naruto burst into laughter, both of them sharing a moment of pure joy.

Finally, they arrived at Naruto's home, where Akane Uchiha opened the door and welcomed them in. They all gathered around the dining table to enjoy a traditional Japanese breakfast of miso soup, grilled fish, rice, and pickled vegetables. As they ate, Mito explained how she had forgiven Naruto and allowed him to stay at her apartment due to the late hour.

Akane thanked Mito for her hospitality towards her son, feeling a surge of gratitude and affection for the girl. Meanwhile, Sasuke couldn't help but tease his cousin, asking where exactly Naruto had slept. Both Mito and Naruto turned beet red, and laughter filled the dining table.

As they all enjoyed their meal, Akane couldn't help but observe the chemistry between Naruto and Mito. She thought about the possibility of a romantic relationship blossoming between them in the future and couldn't help but smile. It warmed her heart to see her son finding happiness and forming such a strong bond with someone who genuinely cared for him.

After breakfast, Mito handed Naruto a journal, its cover worn but filled with love and care. "This is a journal I write in when I go through tough times," she explained. "I've taken my entries out, but I want you to have it. So, one day when I'm Hokage, I can order everyone to read your thoughts!"

Naruto looked at Mito, his eyes wide with surprise. "Really? You'd give this to me? That's... that's amazing, Mito. Thank you so much!" He said, his voice filled with gratitude and warmth.

Mito smiled and nodded, her eyes sparkling with affection. "Of course, Naruto. Writing in a journal can help you sort through your feelings and thoughts. I believe it'll help you just like it helped me."

Naruto ran his fingers along the journal's leather cover, feeling the indentations where Mito had held it countless times. The texture of the journal was a testament to the emotions it had absorbed over time, making it all the more meaningful to him.

He hugged Mito tightly, unable to express just how much her gift meant to him. "Thank you, Mito. I promise I'll take good care of it and use it well."

With their bond strengthened, the trio of Sasuke, Naruto, and Mito left the Uchiha residence and made their way to the Ninja Academy. As they walked together, Naruto and Sasuke still felt the lingering pain from losing their clan. They wore masks of happiness to conceal their struggles, but deep down, they knew they could rely on each other and Mito to help them through their darkest moments.

During my time writing Naruto The Darkness Within, my style changed numerous times. I realized the side character stories were important and I was telling you guys to skip them if you wanted. The real ones definitely read it though. Anyways, after rewatching Ben Ten Omniverse I decided to include these flashback chapters. As I move through this story I realized back tracking will do me good in the long run. However, reading about world building, I know that adding these flashbacks add to the depth of the characters involve. I can't wait for you guys to get to the flashback in time arc! Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed the read. Remember to favorite the story and myself to get notifications of the next chapter release! See you in the next chapter, "The C Rank Mission!"
