Chapter 9.

7 weeks.

Adam lay awake and watched his wife sleep, out of the corner of his eyes he spotted the dairy on the bedside table, leaning over carefully. He opened it.

Hey, champ. 7 weeks today.

I'm writing this while mummy is sleeping.

Who will you look like

How will you be

Will you look like daddy

Or will you look like me

Ten little fingers

And ten little toes

A wrinkled-up forehead

And a cute button nose

You will be crying with my first cold touch

so will I because I love you so much

Love daddy xxx

He places it back where he got it, lay a down, and doses off holding the most two precious things in his life.

The next day

Rachel had gone to her office and started on the paperwork but before she did. There was one thing she had to do first.

Hey baby. 7 weeks!

My eyes shine as bright,

There is a radiant glow,

The feeling is exceptional,

And I so wish to know,

That you are a girl or a boy,

Coz you will be my most precious toy,

Feeling so blessed,

Because of you!

Love mummy xx

Rachel had had her head buried in paperwork all morning, and Adam had made sure she had had a relaxing weekend.

He lifted and laid her and nothing was too much trouble.

Rachel noticed her empty cup on the corner of her desk, she stood up to retrieve it.

A sudden and sharp pain crushed across her abdomen as she leaned over.

Rachel gasped and immediately placed her left hand on her desk and her right one on her stomach.

"God, no. Please no." Rachel closed her eyes and took a deep, steady breath before slowly opening her eyes.

"Your ok baby? You're ok." She whispered gently.

Rachel slowly made her way to her office door.

"Bridget, is Miss Campbell or Mr. Fleet available please?" She asked her secretary.

"I'll find out for you, Mrs. Fleet." She replied.

"Thank you, Bridget." She replied as she made her way out in the corridors.

"Oh, Rachel, im glad I caught you..." Rose spoke as soon as she saw her.

"Not now, rose." Rachel disrancently replied, looking around.

"Rachel, are you alright?" rose asked in concern.

"It's...theres..." Rachel babbled.

"Ree?" Adam called from down the hall.

"She doesn't look right, Adam," Kim told him, sharing a worried look with him.

Picking up his pace, he was with her in no time.

"Hey, you. You alright?" He asked, stroking her cheek.

"No, not really." She replied, tearfully.

"Right, everyone! Move! Come on, move it" Kim instructed the kids.

"Hmm." Rachel moans and leans into his chest.

"It's alright, darling. I've got you." His own heart thumped painfully in his chest at the possible realization of what might be happening.

"I'll get the car. Kim, could you stay with her please?" He asked, looking over at her.

"yup, yeah of course," Kim replies, stepping to take his place.

"No, no please don't leave me." Rachel whimpers.

"I'll be back before you know I've even gone. I'm coming back." He replies, kissing her forehead.

Ge sprints down the stairs, taking them a couple at a time and sprinting across the carpark.

Kim holds and comforts her friend, knowing exactly what's she feeling and going through she whispered words of comfort. Rubbing her back soothingly.

Adam comes back in record time.

"I've got her things," Bridget tells them.

"Thank you, Bridget," Kim replies, giving her a soft smile.

Adam gets her down the stairs and into the car, Rachel clinging to him the entire way.

The car journey is agonizing for the couple, neither of them wanting to speak in fear of what might come out, yet both have that paralyzing thought of what might be.

Adam parks up and takes her inside.

"could someone help us, it's my wife." He explains to the nurse behind the desk.

"Of course." She replies.

Adam explained the situation and they are led to a room.

Rachel lays on the bed and Adam sits next to her, holding her hand as if it was his lifeline.

He doesn't speak, he doesn't want to open his mouth and say the wrong thing.

It had been a long road for the couple to get to where they were. This baby was everything to them and the thought of it being no more seemed incomprehensible to them.

"Hello, I'm Amanda. Let's have a look, shall we?" She quickly gets to work.

"Anything?" Rachel dares to ask, gripping her husband's hand as if it was her safety net.

"I'm so sorry." Amanda bows her head slightly,

Rachel nods her head profusely, angrily wiping away her tears as if they are a sign of weakness.

"no! No, you check again!" Adam demands furiously, getting up quickly. Knocking his chair over.

"Adam," Rachel whispers.

"I've triple-checked. I'm truly sorry." Amanda apologized.

"Addy, sit down, come on," Rachel tells him, putting her hand out.

"I'll give you some time." Amanda leaves.

"im sorry, so sorry. I'm so, so sorry." Rachel sobs.

"No, love. You gave nothing, NOTHING to apologize for. This was not your fault." He tells her, holding her face.

Ge holds her as she sobbed her heart out.

"It's not fair!" She rages at no one.

He holds her right and lets her get it out of her system for now.

An hour later. They are home. Adam takes Rachel upstairs.

Rachel sees the dairy sitting on the side, she marches over

"Rachel, no," Adam tells her.

She grabs the diary and starts furiously ripping it to pieces.

"Rach, Rach, Rachel," he calls her and takes it off her.

"why us?! It's gone! It's not fair! Ahhhhh!!" She screams, sinking to the floor as he holds her, rocking her gently and stroking her hair.

He lifts her and sets her on the bed and lays with her, holding her til she cries herself to sleep.

Adam makes sure she is sleeping and goes downstairs.

He leans on the counter, taking a few deep breaths before punching the wall and sliding down it.

No, she didn't need this, she didn't need to see him fall apart, it was the last thing she needed. She needed him to be strong.

But he also needed this moment, his money of grief, a moment with his little girl. They needed that moment more than anything in the world right now.

Because even though she was gone, she'd always be daddy's little girl.
