Don't do it , Chapter 11

Washington D.C. 2010

.
Christmas time was approaching fast and they had already sold everything they had planned, all that remained, was, to hire a moving company to bring the rest of the furniture to Laurel, as well as all the moving boxes that were packed.

Padme was mostly tired, she had to work and take care of private things in the evening. Anakin always got home later than Padmé, he had to make the route to Washington D.C. , but then he helped her where he could. On the weekends they would go out to eat, mostly with Sabé and Ben. The two seemed to be doing well. Sunday was still the day Anakin skyped with London, it was hard for him but there was no way to forget Cliegg, his Dad. Cliegg has already been told he needs to be in Laurel before January 15th, as do Owen and Beru. They have agreed.

Padmé and Anakin were invited to spend Christmas in Boston. Yes, they both knew that as long as her parents lived, they would have to spend the holidays with her family in Boston. If his mother were still alive, they would also have to fly to London. He immediately remembered the Christmas decorations from Käthe Wohlfarth's shop in Heidelberg and how he always bought something for his mother in that shop, yes, Christmas decorations. This Christmas he only has his beloved Padmé with him, but next year he will have a family.

On December 19th, Sabé and Ben came to help, not that they had to, but they wanted. There were so many boxes, but Padmé wasn't supposed to be carrying anything heavy. Dr. Skywalker banned it. She tried anyway and he scolded. Sabé and Ben agreed with him.

"Ani, I'm pregnant, not sick."

"But you will be if you lift heavy and the babies... just let it be."

"Padmé, we'll bring the boxes upstairs for you and you put the things away, OK. ?" said Sabé

"I'm treated like a little kid here."

"Be reasonable, that's what your best friend tells you. How many times have you listened to me and it went well, do the same now."

"OK. but there's nothing Chinese for that, I'll order pizza for us. I feel like pizza."

"Pregnant women have cravings, that's well known and we also eat pizza." Said Sabé.

Everything was already stowed away and in its place that afternoon. Padmé and Anakin said goodbye to their friends, then did the finishing touches and sat on the Chesterfield.

"Chesterfield looks here...somehow better, Ani."

"Then that's great, we'll spend a few years here."

The first night of their real life together. His... their king-size bed was wonderfully soft.

"You push me deep into the mattress, Ani."

"I think you like that. Do you want to come on top." He whispered.

"No, leave it like that now, soon it won't be possible anymore."

She hooked her legs behind his back and clung to him as tightly as she could. Soon she let out a scream.

"Is it so wonderful, Angel?"

After a few movements he reached the high point as well, just as loudly...and then he started kissing her as usual and stroking her hair and face, showing his love.

"I love you Ani, so much." She whispered.

"I love you too, you're mine, Padmé...forever."

He slowly pulled himself out and then she lined, her back against his chest. With his right hand he caressed her stomach. It wasn't quite flat anymore, he felt a very small bump with his fingers.

"Good night Angel, good night you two."

Now it wasn't so easy anymore, both had to drive to work. The days before Christmas were hectic, quickly buying the presents, which was always a challenge, the idea was missing. All she knew was what she was going to give Anakin: a gold tie clip. He didn't often wear a tie, but he should have one. After much deliberation, she thought, for Pooja a doll, for Ryoo something for school, mother loved shawls and scarves, for Sola something made of lapis lazuli and father and Dared liked good wines. Anakin was glad he didn't have to worry about that.

On December 24 they flew from Baltimore to Boston. It was a Friday, they will have to be back by Sunday. Short, but they had already taken their days for the trip to London.

The parents were always happy when she came, especially now that they knew she would finally settle down with the right man and have the children right away. Her mother thought it all happened so quickly and asked herself from time to time, whether this marriage would last. The father didn't doubt Anakin, he had a good feeling.

The holidays were spent getting together and... eating. Anakin complained he has to spend more time in the gym now, that Jobal was so good at cooking.

They flew to Baltimore from Logan International on Sunday afternoon. That was the better option now, firstly the flight itself takes fifteen minutes shorter and the drive to Laurel was the same.

The week leading up to New Years Eve was exhausting, with a lot of work to be done before the end of the year. Anakin didn't have that kind of stress, the clinics always had a...continuous stress. There were times when it wasn't that stressful, but you couldn't predict it.

Padmé wondered if going out and greeting the new year was the right thing to do, his mother had recently passed away but Anakin wanted it, he felt his mother would want him to live and be happy. So, Padmé agreed to Sabé that they would go out with her and Ben. She left all organizational efforts to Sabé.

"Hi girlfriend, I got four excellent tickets with complaisance...how it goes...you know...and they were damn expensive. We celebrate with a good dinner and dance music on the Odyssey cruiser on the Potomac River. From there we will be able to admire the fireworks from the first row. What do you say?"

"You've always been great when it comes to organization. Let's go shopping, buy something new to move in, huh?"

"With you? Then I can already offer my shares on the stock exchange."

"OK. but I have nothing to wear, you come with me...as a consultant."

"If I didn't know you, I could say you're a nice person, but I know all your tricks and know that you're a sneaky little witch with ulterior motives."

"OK. I give up. what do you want to wear?"

"I still have that black dress..."

"…that you wore to prom?! You're not serious, are you?"

"Padmé, I can't spend ten thousand dollars on clothes every month."

"Tell me, had Prada an effect or not?"

"Yes but….."

"Without but. We'll go to downtown...and find something you don't need to cry about. So, the day after tomorrow, we're taking the day off."

"I leave my credit card at home."

"Don't dare!"

On Tuesday afternoon, the friends found what they were looking for that evening. Sabé found a long silver sequin dress with gold accents and Padmé found a strapless empire style dress in vanilla color with a wide black band tied under the bust. In the dress she was able to hide her little belly very well.

On Friday, December 31st, they came home early to get ready for the night. Anakin was delighted with the dress. He himself thought, a tuxedo would be appropriate for the occasion, so he donned one, pinned an interesting colorful cummerbund and matched it with a bow tie.

"You're perfect, you know that?"

"Am I really?" he smiled mischievously.

"Yes. Every woman on the cruiser will envy me tonight."

"It's just a pity that you are not aware of your beauty. You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, Padme. I have something for you. Your necklace is strong enough to carry this..."

He took an old black box out of the drawer. There was his mother's brooch.

"This brooch is a family heirloom...like the ring you wear. This brooch has a clip, can be attached to a chain and worn as a pendant. I want you to wear this."

"But it's too precious..."

"You are even more precious." He kissed her.

"I love you my Lord."

"And I love you my Lady."

"I'm not Lady."

"OK. , OK. not yet but soon, very soon."

The Road to Washington D.C. was tedious, Anakin was impatient with half the world on the road. Of course, everyone wanted to go somewhere to celebrate tonight.

They left the car in a nearby parking lot, which wasn't that close, and took a taxi to the docking station. It was already a few minutes after eight. Ben and Sabé were already there but they lived in D.C. and were better at estimating their time.

The evening started with entertainment, aperitifs at the bar, something non-alcoholic but tasty for Padme and Anakin. They exchanged all the news but there wasn't that much, they were always in touch and up to date.

At nine o'clock dinner was served, a four-course menu: coconut-lemongrass soup, taliatelle with fried porcini mushrooms, chicken breast with potato strips and mango chatney, and lemon-basil sorbet for dessert. Sabé and Ben enjoyed an excellent Nappa Valley Chardonnay, Padmé and Anakin drank lemon water as usual, they all even drank espresso, wanting to stay awake to dance the night away.

Dancing to live music is better than at the night club where DJ puts on. There was rumba, samba, cha-cha-cha, foxtrot, discofox, tango, jave, waltz, slow waltz…something for everyone.

"Anakin, I can't dance everything, I'm pregnant."

"If that's not an excuse... well, we dance only slow things. Slow Warz, Angel, come on. Do you actually know that it is also called the English Walz?"

"Sure, I had to pass dance school too, Ani." She laughed.

They were a beautiful couple. Alakin was twenty centimeters taller; but Padmé wore four inch high heels. They danced like they did on their first night at Haxley. Anakin held her tight, that precious commodity, and as a gynecologist, he knew that no matter how nice the thought of having twins is, complications can arise. In this beautiful moment he didn't want to think about it. Padmé snuggled into his embrace, feeling more comfortable than she had ever felt in her life.

"Ani, I'm probably leaving half of my makeup on your tuxedo, but I'm so comfortable, I could stay like this forever. What are Sabé and Ben doing, do you see them?"

"I also feel comfortable when I have you in my arms..." He kissed her on the head "...they are sitting at the table and discussing...quite lively."

She raised her head and looked around.

"I kind of don't have a good feeling. Whatever it is, it's something serious. Hopefully they'll stay together until we get married...not that I'm being mean."

"I had a mean thought like that too. I bet you'll find out."

"Certainly. I would think it would be a shame if it didn't work out with the two. She is educated, intelligent and beautiful..."

"But the smartest and most beautiful woman is in my arms, without question."

"Seriously Ani, what about Ben, do you think he's serious, did he tell you anything that speaks for or against Sabé?"

"He's very fond of her but didn't fall in love at first sight like he did with his late wife and...I think he's always looking for comparison."

"Sometimes it takes a little longer to realize you're in love."

"Are you speaking from experience, Angel?"

"You mean with you? No, when I took a look in your eyes, I had fallen."

"And how about the others?"

"Not that I had many, but after a long time I thought with one that maybe something could come of it. He was nice to me, but then..."

"Then what?"

"...I found out that he was cheating on me. It wasn't a real relationship, we just dated and...well, not exclusive. Luckily, I quickly realized that I didn't need something like that. …And what about you?"

"You won't believe me when I tell you, but I've never been in love, yeah ok. I had a crush on Lady Margaret..."

Padme stiffened like a board.

"Well then..."

"Angel, I was six years old at the time, you can't take that seriously." He laughed, "... after that came countless women without meaning and without feelings."

"Well, well, Lady Margaret...that's why she claims you."

"No, no way, she didn't know that at the time, but I found out much later that she was in love with me, only that was irrelevant back then and is now as well. Driving past you and squirting you, seeing your face...I couldn't stop thinking about you, somehow I knew you were the one."

At the table, Sabé and Ben discussed politics. Padmé tried to direct the topic of conversation, but to no avail. The two were so deep in their efforts to defend their own point of view that it seemed like they were arguing. Not good at all, Padmé thought.

"Is politics so important that one is willing to sacrifice one's relationship?" Padmè asked.

"We're not or not yet in a relationship." Ben surprised by the statement.

The discussion stopped, and an awkward silence settled around the table. Padmé and Anakin tried to bring up other topics, but to no avail, the two remained silent. Then Padmé asked Ben for a dance. Anakin had no choice but to dance with Sabé. Back at the table, Sabé said to Padmé:

"You're lucky girlfriend, Anakin is an excellent... Dancer."

"Ben is too, and I imagine he's good at a lot of other things too."

Then there was something to laugh about, but the great mood that started the evening was gone. Padmé danced the last dances until midnight in the arms of her future husband. He held her tight, they were both just happy. Had he remained alone after his mother's death, he would not have pulled himself out of the depression hole. He was still sad but he now had her and the babies to come, a real family.

From the Potomac River, from the cruiser, you could watch the fireworks over the city very well. It was colorful, was a lot and lasted a long time. A nice experience. An hour after midnight there was a snack. It was finger food, very nicely decorated. There was sweets too, only choice to drink, Padmé and Anakin drank water anyway. They set the limit at three past midnight and then everyone went home. Anakin still had to drive, luckily Laurel wasn't far. Besides, they didn't worry, they still had two days off and the fridge was full. They planned to stay at home, cook together, watch TV, go for a walk, just enjoy being together.
