IN THE EYE OF THE STORM
Chapter 9
The phone rang by Naberries at five o'clock in the morning.
*Good morning, this is New York Police Department 19th Precinct. Are you Ruwee Naberrie?*
*Yes.*
*Please come to 153 E 67th St as soon as possible, we need you due to Padmé Naberrie's case.*
*Padme Naberrie?*
*Yes, Sir, we ask for your appear.*
*Is something happened?*
*Only in personal conversation.*
*Immediately.* Ruwee hung up, shaking.
"Jobal, get up, we have to go to the police, there's something with Padmé...they don't want to talk until we get there. Hurry up."
Jobal got up and nearly broke down in tears, hoping nothing serious. She was aware that the police would visit them at home if Padmé was found dead. Ruwee and she both dressed before boarding a taxi and heading to the provided place. Formally greeting them in the open-plan office, the in-charge officer did so in a separate room. Padmé had her purse and shoes on the table. Jobal froze to death.
"Your daughter is not dead, Mrs. Naberrie. The truth is, your dughter was ready to jump into the Hudson River from the George Washington Bridge when the Port Authority Police Department officers stopped her around two hours ago."
"What?"
At the last minute, they stopped the suicide. She was brought to the NewYork-Presbyterian Irving Medical Center at Columbia University. If you want to go there, it's a few streets away, but I believe she's probably been medicated by this point, so do as you like. Here are her shoes and bag, that you will probably want to take. All I need you to do is sign a few paperwork for me.
"Sure and thank you for informations." Ruwee said dejectedly.
Jobal tearfully collected Padme's things and they went out to call a taxi.
"To the Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center, please."
Since they were the parents, the front desk receptionist advised them to seek information from Dr. Rodgers. Dr. Rodgers was friendly despite being exhausted and nearing the conclusion of his shift.
"Mrs. and Mr. Naberrie, your daughter has been medicated, and she is currently asleep. The treatment will make obvious exactly what happened and why she intended to jump from the bridge. We'll find out if she had this inclination because of an incident or if there have been warning flags for a while. Just expect her to leave the hospital in a few days. Suicide is a serious issue, but since you both work in law, you are aware of this. Injuries she sustained while attempting to jump will heal. Just so you know, nothing serious.
"Did she say anything?"
"Yeah, something like...Anakin...or something similar."
"Good. When can we visit her?"
"We will notify you. That's all for now."
"Thank you and goodbye."
"Goodbye."
At home, Jobal fell into her husband's arms and cried bitterly. Ruwee couldn't help it either, his little girl was in psychiatry...because of Anakin.
At seven o'clock the phone rang.
*Good morning Mr. Naberrie, is Padmé at home already….I don't know, she suddenly left, I thought…maybe she went home. Is she at home? I...was worried.*
She's not home, so I'm not sure why you assumed that she would go home by herself. She tried to jump of the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River, which is why, as I previously stated, she is not here but rather in a psychiatric hospital. I don't know what you did to her, but I'll kill you if I see you again.
*WHAT ? I did nothing to her...I sure didn't...oh god...*
Ruwe cut the connection.
It was a powerful hit that felt like being punched in the stomach. What may have occurred? How did he act? Nothing, both consciously and unconsciously. Oh God, what can he do at this point? He can't see her, according to them. How is he going to figure it out? How can he explain the situation?
*Hi Ben, I found Padme.*
*Thank God, is she home?*
*No, she's in some psychiatric hospital. She wanted to jump from George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River. Her father said, if he sees me again, he would kill me. What have I done Ben?*
*Stay where you are, I'll be right there.*
Ben arrived promptly even though he was already busy with packing. He lived next door. He was had to vacate his apartment and, like Padmé and Satine, go to Boston to finish his Harvard studies.
"Hi Anakin. I honestly don't know what you did; I mean, I've been more focused on Satine than you, but I would have noticed if you made a mistake. I can't believe you did something, it's horrible. I'll call Satine."
"Ben, what have I done...I don't know, maybe our friends saw, maybe something unconscious hurting her, but what could be so horrible that she wished to end her life?...Oh my God, Ben, I can't live without her."
Anakin buried his face in his hands and cried. Ben took his iPhone.
*Hi Dormé, I know you haven't slept enough yet, but please take Sabé and come to Anakin, something terrible happened.*
*What the hell? ….OK. we will come.*
By the time everyone got to Anakin, Anakin was already in tears and could only tell how Ruwee had threatened him. Everyone was shocked.
"I have an idea." Said Satine. "My mother's brother, my uncle Walter, is the big boss at the NYPD, he's the commissioner. I'm going to see him tomorrow and I'm sure I'll get some useful information."
"Do that, we have to learn something...somehow. Anakin needs help. How are you feeling, Anakin?" Ben asked.
"I don't know... maybe guilty? Is it me? Did you see something, what have I done, what? She wanted to die, Ben. How can I live without her?"
He cried and they continued to argue, trying to remember...but neither could. Well, after a few hours, they left, leaving him in despair. Ben wanted to check on him later.
Anakin was on the bed, staring at the ceiling for several minutes or maybe hours before turning to the photograph of Padmé on his desk. His thoughts wandered throughout the whole evening, but he was unable to recall anything that may harm her or how seriously injured she might be. He must have caused her suffering, thus there must have been something. He cried once more. It hurt so much.
Ben returned in the afternoon, got him something to eat, and inquired about his well-being despite the fact that it was unnecessary. He was in distress and felt horrible. Ben said he would come later, and that night, he did. Anakin hadn't even tasted the meal, he was still laying on the bed and staring up at the ceiling. A practically emptied bottle of Jack Daniel's sat by the bed.
"Anakin, you should eat something and drink water, not whisky. That's not a solution, you can't think when you do like that."
"I don't want to think anymore, I can't figure it out anyway."
"Eat something, Anakin, I'll be there in the morning. Try to sleep. Good night."
"Is it supposed to be good? Not for me. Ben, I lost everything when I lost her."
"You're upset now, I know, but tomorrow we'll know more, don't get discouraged, OK. ?
Ben left and Anakin was left alone again to brood, to try to remember, to try to sleep.
Sleep came soon out of the tiredness and despair, and the dream bothered him considerably more than it already was.
-Why did you hurt me like way, Anakin?
-My Angel, what have I done to you?
-I gave everything, I had because I loved you so much. Wasn't that enough?
-Please tell me what I did, so that I may fully explain.
-No Anakin, there isn't an explanation for it. I gave myself for you, so I don't deserve this.
- If you could tell it to me, I could explain it. I want to know since many problems will go unresolved if you don't tell me. What exactly was so horrible? Tell me, please.
-Anakin, it doesn't matter anymore.
-We always wanted to be together, remain together, remember, please. You are important to me.
-"We'll never be together again, Anakin," before jumping from the bridge.
At that moment, Anakin awoke, drenched with sweating, and sat straight in bed. He had a lot, a lot, and they had to go. It was a horrible nightmare to think that they would never be together again.
Even though it was completely dark outside for the remainder of the night, you could still hear New York, a city that doesn't sleep like him.
For those who are far from finding a solution to their problems the sunrise of spring has brought about a new day that will not be any better than the one before.
On Monday morning Ben came and brought two sandwiches and coffee.
"Anakin, you haven't touched the food and the whiskey bottle is empty."
"I wasn't hungry, Ben."
"However, the thirst isn't for the water. You can't do that, Anakin. You were not even covered."
"I was too warm."
"But very pale in the face. Anakin, it doesn't get any better if you refuse to eat. What about your training."
"I can't, I'm in pain."
Ben was concerned. He wanted to wait and see what Satine would find out, she promised to come.
That morning, as promised, Satine went to meet her Uncle Walter.
"Hi Uncle Walter, how are you?"
"Hello my dearest niece."
"I'm your only niece, remember?"
"How could I forget. I remember that every time you want something from me, ooooor is it different this time?" he laughed.
"Should I be honest?"
"Try it."
"It's not different."
"So what is it this time?" he laughed.
"I need an information."
"Satine, you know that sharing informations is a lot more complicated than fixing your slip-ups."
"I know, but you owe me one."
"You always claim back the favor when it's most dangerous."
"I love you, Uncle Walter."
"If your mother knew that..."
"Better not."
"So what do you want to know?"
She took a deep breath and exhaled painfully. The uncle didn't like that.
"A young woman was found attempting to jump from the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River on Saturday night into Sunday morning. I need the location of her admission."
"Let's see..." he typed something, scrolled down, scrolled up, typed again.. "...here...oh shit...Padmé Naberrie...your girlfriend. Tell me what the hell..."
"Uncle Walter, please..."
"She was taken to the Irving Medical Center at NewYork-Presbyterian."
"Thanks Uncle Walter, you're my all-time favorite uncle."
"I'm your only uncle, remember?"
"No, and I owe you one."
"I'll claim it back, be ready."
"Ready, only Mama must not know about it."
"As always. Come here and give your uncle a kiss."
"Left cheek or right cheek?"
"Both, and you get a hundred dollars for each."
"Even if I had a hundred uncles more, you would be my very favorite uncle. Bye."
...and put two hundred Dollar bills in her pocket, gave him a wink and left.
More than anything, her uncle loved her. His twin sister was her mother. Their parents passed away while they were quite young, and his sister gave up her own schooling to work in order to pay for his studies. He encouraged his sister to attend college after earning a degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston and beginning to work. He has now paid for her. Because of their shared love and closeness, the twins were unable to find a longterm mate. Satine's uncle treated her as if she were his own despite being an illegitimate child.
Satine went. Although she didn't yet know how to go to Padmé, this information would be helpful. Psychiatry was not an open ward and the thought of her best friend spending the days, weeks, maybe months there, tarnished the happiness she had just found with Ben. Damn it, how could happen something like this?
