Chapter 25
In Memoriam
Detective Sergeant Eric Andrews surveyed the crime scene. He was called specifically for this, but he didn't understand why.
The reason became more abundantly clear when he found himself at the 'Grey Castle Pub.'
When he arrived at the scene it was a crapshoot. The scene was located in The Manager's den. When he saw the body, he knew why he was there.
It was a damn shame. Andrews knew that Cassidy Doherty was trouble, but even he didn't deserve this.
Two shots, one to the back where he didn't see it coming. Then a finishing shot to the head where all he could do is see it coming.
Eric saw that The Grey Twins were apprehended immediately upon police coming in due to an anonymous caller reporting the murder.
But what made DS Andrews so curious was that when arresting officers came into the room, both Grey Twins and their bodyguards were unconscious, and laying on the floor.
He checked the room for traces of magic, and found a faint trace. DS Andrews was unable to see if it was from Doherty or from someone else.
The body was covered and the room was sealed off and the evidence was listed and catalogued.
DS Andrews sealed off the room waiting for the MLE attache to arrive.
Few minutes later, several pops cracked on the adjacent street. The Aurors had arrived. Minute had gone by before a group of three Aurors, led by Alastor Moody, had arrived.
Eric nodded towards Alastor, "It's been a while Alastor."
"It's nice to see you again, Officer Andrews," Alastor returned the gesture.
Eric pointed out, "DS Andrews now, I got a promotion a few months back."
Alastor was impressed, "That's good to hear. It's unfortunate I'm hearing about it under these circumstances." Alastor motioned towards the body. "What do we have DS Andrews?"
"One victim, a student from Hogwarts."
Moody's eyes widened. He was brought over to the body where he and the other Aurors examined the body. "Do we have a name?"
"Cassidy Doherty, age seventeen. Hufflepuff, and a right mean bully."
"Hufflepuff and a bully? Now I've heard of everything," One auror joked.
"All right, that's enough Galbraith," Moody racked his head. "Doherty, isn't this Dante Yalarad's right hand man?"
"The very same. In fact my kid put me onto Doherty and Yalarad, because they were causing mayhem back at Hogwarts."
Alastor groaned, "I swear! Dumbledore and his chosen few."
One of the other Aurors used their wand to scan the den. "I'm getting a faint trail of magic used, did Doherty try to defend himself?"
Eric shook his head, "No I don't think so. I can't find his wand. The Grey Twins and their two bodyguards weren't arrested with it."
Alastor looked at him, "A third party?"
DS Andrews shook his head. "Someone magical. Disabled the Grey Twins, and their bodyguards. This person freed Doherty only to kill him soon after. The question is 'why?'"
DS Andrews walked back to Cassidy's body. Alastor Moody joined him, "And why did the person use a gun to do it?"
Galbraith interjected, "Couldn't they have killed Doherty first, and the person came in after to stun them?"
DS Andrews hawed, "Well that's also a possibility, but there is one thing wrong with that theory."
The young auror scratched his head, "What is it?"
"If the unknown person was here just to kill Doherty, then why show up? Why not just let The Greys do it?"
Alastor walked around the room, "This person was here to pick up Doherty at first. Maybe let the Greys rough him up a little bit, to teach him a lesson."
DS Andrews followed Alastor's train of thought, "Yes, but before they left something happened. Something that led to a skirmish breaking out. What though?"
"And why not kill the Greys? Why leave witnesses?" Alastor thought aloud, "Did they say anything?"
"No, they were loaded into a lorry and taken 'round to the local hospital," DS Andrews stated. "They are being held under police supervision until they are formally charged."
"You're charging them?"
"Well with the evidence I have it points to the Greys, and quite frankly with those two out of the way, it's better for the general public."
Alastor put a hand on Eric's shoulder, "Don't worry I'll have a few Aurors assigned to this case from our end. After all, if it weren't for the Grey's, Doherty might not have been killed by this mystery assailant."
DS Andrews shook his head, "Right…" His mind came across another topic. "So what's this I hear about Auror Black and the Yalarad case? I thought that was closed a while back?"
Alastor had a grim and sour look on his face. Andrews saw that the other Aurors quickly shut up and made themselves look busy. "I don't know how she did it, but Rita Skeeter got her hands on the commission report on Silas' death and twisted it into a hit piece on Orion. It portrayed him as an active participant of Silas' death. Not because he was involved, but because he left him alone. She worded almost as if he was in on it!"
"Jesus Christ," Eric exclaimed. "What's Orion doing about it?"
"Well I certainly hope that he will bring a lawsuit against that harlot. It's what she deserves! Orion has spent the last two weeks working from home, but he is planning to return to the office, which isn't a great idea. But, he's just as headstrong as Silas was, so there's no stopping him."
"I hope that he isn't going to get any pushback from this," Andrews stated.
"Let's hope so."

The word got out quickly. Cassidy Doherty was dead.
Nobody had seen hide nor hair from Dante Yalarad. The school as a whole was glad to see Doherty gone, and Dante indisposed, but not like this.
The Hufflepuffs were saddened to see one of theirs had died. Though he might not have been well liked, Cassidy Doherty embodied the true beliefs of Hufflepuff until the end. He was loyal to a fault, but some argued his loyalties were to the wrong man.
Dante obviously took Cassidy's death extremely hard. He had spent the past two days in his bedchambers.
Dumbledore had decided to give him the next couple of weeks off from his classes.
Sam was outside of Dante's quarters. He was asked to come by to speak with him.
He tried to speak with Dante before, but he was turned away by Athena who told him he wasn't in the best mood to see anyone.
The door opened, Sam looked towards the door. Athena was there, who looked a bit worn out. She looked to have been consoling Dante for a long while. "Are you alright Athena?"
Athena nodded, "I will be. I just need a shower and a nap. I'll be back in a few hours. Jed and Dee Dee will be by shortly, just keep him company in the meantime."
Sam agreed and went into Dante's room. Not knowing what he was getting himself into. He had a long talk with Dante who seemed to be holding on as well as he could.
After an hour, Desdemona and Jed came around and relieved Sam.
Afterwards, Sam made his way to Gabriel's classroom. It was after hours and The Marauders would be there. It was important that he spoke to Severus, as soon as possible.
Sam stopped by the Gryffindor Common Room and picked up Renner, Lyta, Augie, and Michael. The five of them marched down to the third floor. As they descended, more of his friends joined up with them, until they were all at their full strength.
They all were caught up on what Sam had talked about with Dante. As they walked up to the classroom, Bartholomew stopped them.
He looked at Sam, "If we do this, there's no going back."
Sam nodded, "I know."
Bartholomew smiled, he was proud of the decisions that Sam had made.
He moved aside, and Sam opened the door. Indeed, inside were The Marauders. They were practicing their stances for the Dueling Club. There before then stood the Half Blood Prince, Severus Snape.
Severus locked eyes with 'The Young Lion' known as Sam Yalarad and his friends, The United.
"Sam, how goes it?" Severus addressed Sam cordially enough. He looked back at his friends, and they had stopped what they were doing. Another quick glance to Sirius saw that he was waiting to see what was going to happen, if he was angry then he hid it well this time around
"It goes Severus," Sam responded. "We need to talk, is Gabriel around? He's gonna want to hear this."
Gabriel was over by his desk, grading a few papers. "Give me a moment Sam. I'm swamped with grading these assignments."
Sam shook his head. He turned to his friends, "What are you waiting for? Go. Go congregate. Intermingle. Renner, go hang out with your girlfriend."
Renner blushed redder than a strawberry, "Sam she's not my…"
Sam gave his cousin a teasing look.
"I haven't asked her yet," Renner went over to where Mary was.
One by one, members of Sam's United went over to the members of the Marauders and slowly started to converse with one another.
Sam walked over to Severus. "I figured if this truce was ever going to have a chance. It would be best if we all got to know each other."
"That is a fair point." Severus looked at Sam, "What did you want to talk about?'
Sam looked at Severus, and then over to Gabriel, who was still grading papers. He nodded towards an empty corner.
Black Donal stayed back a bit at the suggestion of Severus.
The two of them had a semblance of privacy, but Severus decided to put up a silencing spell over them.
"What's going on? You…you don't seem as tense as before," Severus pointed out
"Well, I guess not. I had a talk with Dante, it's the first time I've been able to speak with him since…y'know."
Severus shook his head. When word got out about Cassidy Doherty's death, it was a mixed bag for Severus and his friends. On one hand, he was happy that he wouldn't have to deal with Doherty ever again. On the other hand, he was conflicted about how ecstatic he felt at first. Severus never wished ill will on Doherty, and was at odds with himself over these feelings.
"Yeah…" Severus felt some compassion for Dante. Severus couldn't even imagine how he would feel if he had ever lost Lily in such a manner. "How is he?"
"Not good."
"I figured."
Sam looked at Severus, "Thank you for asking. I know you and Dante have been at odds, but it's nice you care to ask."
Severus shook his head, "I never would want to be in his shoes."
"Yeah, neither do I." Sam cleared his throat, as he got down to what he wanted to talk to Severus about. "He's given me the leadership."
Severus had to do a double take, "What?"
Sam shook his head, "Yeah. Dante gave me the leadership of The United. I couldn't believe it myself, but it's the truth."
Severus looked a bit suspicious.
Sam noticed his apprehension, "I know what you're thinking but…you weren't there. You didn't see the look on his face. The sense of…defeat. I've never seen Dante look like that before. He looked a bit broken."
Severus sighed, "I would take his word with a grain of salt. Did he say why?"
Sam sighed, "No, but he said It was time, and he had been something he'd been thinking about for a while, but after Cassidy's death…" Sam shrugged,
Severus looked at Sam, he was well within his rights to be skeptical, "And you believe him?"
Sam was a bit slow with his answer, "I want to believe him. I think he's going through a lot right now, and only time will tell if he means what he's said."
Severus remained silent for a moment, contemplating Sam's words. "If he's given you the leadership, will you still need us at your party to confront him?"
"I don't know, Severus. I honestly don't know. If he has truly stepped down and handed over the leadership to me. Then maybe the confrontation won't be necessary." Sam looked at him, "Why? Worried that I've rescinded my invite?"
"A bit, as I've already gotten your gift," Severus joked before he crossed his arms, and made his expression unreadable. "I would suggest that you remain on your guard, Sam. Yes, he is going through a lot with Doherty's death, but I wouldn't treat his word as gospel."
Sam nodded, acknowledging Severus's words. "I understand, Severus. I won't blindly trust him, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. I'll stay on my guard, but I'm trusting his word."
Severus uncrossed his arms and sighed. "Very well, Sam. I'll support your decision, but remember that if he betrays your trust, there will be consequences."
"I know, Severus. Thank you for your support and understanding." Sam extended his hand towards Severus, a gesture of goodwill.
Severus hesitated for a moment before accepting the handshake. "Keep me informed, Sam. If anything seems amiss, don't hesitate to reach out to me."
Sam nodded, a sense of relief washing over him. "I will, Severus. Thank you."
With their conversation concluded, Sam and Severus rejoined the rest of their friend groups. The tension in the air had somewhat dissipated as the members of The United and the Marauders engaged in conversations. Both sides are putting in effort to get to know each other better. It was a small step, but Severus hoped that it would lead to a better future.
Michael walked over to one of the dueling platforms where Sirius was standing by as he was coaching Regulus on his dueling stances. "Hey Black."
Sirius looked over at Michael Ashdown, he knew that he wasn't going to start trouble, and he was relaxed. "Yeah Ashdown?"
Michael leaned on the dueling platform, as Regulus took a break to listen in on the conversation that was starting.
"Two nuns were driving from Mexico into America during Prohibition," Michael set the scene of one of his classic jokes.
Sirius looked a bit confused, but let Michael continue, "Okay."
"In the boot, was a small crate of tequila…" Michael continued his joke.
"Michael," Gabriel looked up from his grading over at the young Gryffindor. He interrupted Michael, making sure the joke wasn't going to go too far.
"Oh no no, it's a clean joke I swear!" Michael tried to dissuade Gabriel's worry.
Sirius waved Gabriel off, "I'm intrigued now, go on Ashdown."
Regulus sat on the edge of the platform as Michael continued his joke.
"One of the nuns kept saying that they were going to get caught. The other nun said, 'We're nuns, who's going to arrest us?'"
Regulus chuckled a bit at that.
"When they crossed over into America, they get pulled over. The first nun was panicking. Thinking the jig was up, but the second nun told her what to do. The nun said, 'Roll down your window, show him your cross, and tell him we're nuns.'" Michael laughed to himself before delivering the punchline. "So the first nun rolled down her window when the cop walked over and said, 'Fuck off, we're nuns!"
Sirius and Regulus both erupted into laughter after hearing Michael's joke.
The other kids burst into laughter after hearing the joke as well. Even Gabriel and Black Donal had a laugh upon hearing that joke.
Sirius guffawed as he departed the punchline, "Fuck off, we're nuns!"
Regulus hunched over, "That's hilarious!"
Michael grinned, "Thank you, I try."
Severus laughed as he saw that Sirius was getting along with Ashdown. It gave him hope that just maybe, there was hope that he and Sam could possibly reconcile somewhere down the line.

The Great Hall was filled with a somber atmosphere as the Hogwarts community gathered to pay their respects to Cassidy Doherty. The memorial service was a solemn occasion. It was where students and faculty alike came together to honor the memory of their fallen classmate.
However, many of the students if Cassidy Doherty had even deserved the honor of such a memorial service.
Dumbledore, and the other professors were dressed in black. Professor Sprout was saddened to see one of her Badgers die at such a young age, taken too soon. Even if he was a bad egg at times. She could still see the best in him.
The body of Cassidy Doherty was not presented at the service, so a portrait of Cassidy was drawn for the service. Dante had it commissioned himself, and it was covered with a wreath of flowers.
Dante stood at the front of the hall, his usually vibrant and fiery demeanor was replaced with a deep sorrow. He took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts before addressing the crowd. His voice trembled slightly as he began to speak.
"Today, we gather here to remember Cassidy Doherty, a fellow Hufflepuff and a friend to many."
A few students scoffed at that, Cassidy had no friends apart from Dante's crew.
"Cassidy was a person who embodied the true spirit of Hufflepuff house. He was fiercely loyal, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need."
"Fiercely loyal to you, perhaps," Sirius muttered under his breath as he had to stomach this service.
"Siri, behave yourself," Regulus quietly admonished his brother. While Regulus would rather be anywhere but here, he still acted accordingly as a member of the House of Black.
As Dante spoke, the room remained hushed. Some students cast cautious glances towards Dante, mindful of his reputation, but still willing to listen.
Dante continued, his voice growing stronger with each passing sentence. "Cassidy had a heart full of kindness and compassion. He believed in the power of unity and stood up for what he believed was right."
"Codswallop," Jonathan Slink muttered under his breath.
Nathan shushed his fellow friend, now wasn't the time for added commentary.
"Sometimes, that meant standing alone. But he never wavered, and that is something we should all strive to emulate," Dante spoke highly of his friend.
A wave of introspection washed over the audience as they reflected on Cassidy's character, and Dante's words. Despite his recent conflicts, his words resonated with some members of his audience.
"He had his flaws, as we all do," Dante admitted, a touch of sadness in his voice. "But none of us are perfect. Cassidy's imperfections were a part of him, and they made him who he was. A great man, a complex individual with a fierce determination to make a difference in the world."
Severus sat quietly in the audience as he spoke. He had to admit Dante had quite the gift in oration. Dante's speech was a poignant reminder that even in the face of differences and disagreements, there was value in acknowledging the qualities that made each person unique.
"As we mourn his loss, let us also remember the lessons that Cassidy taught us. Let us strive to be more compassionate, more understanding, and more willing to stand up for what we believe is right."
"When the hell did that lummox ever teach those qualities," Hippolyta asked her older brother.
"Lyta, not now!" Sam hushed her before anyone else heard her. They were up on the stage with the rest of Dante's friends and siblings.
Dante wrapped up his speech, "In the end, it is the impact that we leave on the world that truly matters. Thank you."
The room remained silent for a moment, absorbing Dante's heartfelt words. Slowly, a soft applause filled the air, originating from the Hufflepuff table and spreading throughout the Great Hall. Students from other houses joined in, acknowledging the tribute to Cassidy and the sentiment behind Dante's speech.
Seeing as the memorial service took place during a weekday, Dumbledore dismissed the students and gave them the day off.
As the memorial service concluded, students began to disperse. Many held a silent respect for Dante's strength in delivering the speech, recognizing the burden he carried in honoring Cassidy's memory while wrestling with his own grief.
The Marauders left the service quickly, even though a truce was on, they did not want to linger around Dante.
"So, we have the day to ourselves. What should we do?" Jane asked her friends.
"Maybe get a packed lunch from Clive and have a picnic? It's such a nice day out, it would be a shame to waste it inside," Mary suggested.
Everyone agreed with Mary's idea. However there was one who decided against it.
"Erm. Sorry everyone, I'm not…in the mood to go outside." Emily explained, "I'm going to see if I can go see my mother, after all this…well you understand."
Everyone shook their heads in understanding. Lily gave Emily a quick hug, "Of course. I'd probably do the same."
Emily broke off from the group to try and find a chaperone to take her to see her mother.
Luckily enough, she ran into Professor Schell as he left the Great Hall after the service. "Gabriel?"
Gabriel looked back to see Emily Dewhurst approach him. "Oh hello Emily, is everything alright?"
"Yes, I was wondering, now that we have been given the rest of the day to ourselves, would you accompany me to see my mother?"
"Your mother?" Gabriel thought for a second before he remembered. "Oh yes, your mother is in the hospital. Yes, of course I can take you."
Emily smiled softly, "Thank you Gabriel."
"No need to thank me, Emily. Come on, I'll apparate us close to the hospital, and then we'll walk the rest of the way."
Emily shook her head, she remembered that was what happened when Professor McGonagall took her to see her mother. "Should we let someone know?"
"Bah, I'm a professor, you'll be safe with me. And if someone should raise a ruckus, they can take it up with me."
The two walked together out of the castle and towards the edge of the castle grounds. There Gabriel took Emily's hand. "Brace yourself, side-apparition can be hard on a first timer."
Emily shook her head and braced herself. With that, Gabriel apparated them both outside the grounds of Nottingham General Hospital.
The hospital was located at the edge of the country, and was located next to a forest.
Gabriel and Emily landed outside in a small clearing in the woods next to the Hospital. Upon landing, ga riel turned to Emily. "You okay Emily?"
Emily looked a bit green, but was able to hold it in. "I'm…I'm okay Gabriel."
"I think I have a Pepper-Up on me, if you need it?"
Emily took a deep breath and recovered swiftly. "I'm okay. Come on let's go," She walked through the woods towards the Hospital.
They walked to Nottingham General and were given entry after coming inside.
The two walked into the hospital and took it up to the cancer treatment floor. Upon exiting they both walked up to the desk. The nurse looked over and gave Emily a smile. "Emily! This is a surprise. I wasn't expecting you until the weekend."
"There was a memorial service for a student that had passed away, and afterwards we were given the day off," Emily explained.
"Oh dear, well I can understand why you'd want to come visit." She looked at Gabriel, "Are you one of Emily's teachers?"
Gabriel shook his head, "Yes Ma'am."
"Well thank you so much for doing this. I know that Maria will be elated to see Emily. Thank you Mr…"
"Schell, Gabriel Schell."
The nurse nodded, "Thank you, Mr. Schell. Maria's room is just down the hallway, Room 405. You can go right in."
"Thank you," Gabriel replied with a nod.
Emily held Gabriel's arm as they walked down the hallway. They reached Room 405 and Emily took a deep breath before knocking softly on the door.
"Come in," A weak voice called from inside.
Emily pushed the door open gently and entered the room, followed by Gabriel. Maria Dewhurst, Emily's mother, was lying in the hospital bed, her face pale and tired. She had on a cream colored hospital gown and wore a head wrap to cover her thinning hair.
Maria's eyes brightened when she saw her daughter. "Emily! My darling, you're here," Maria said with a weak smile.
Emily rushed to her mother's side and took her hand, tears welling up in her eyes. "I couldn't stay away, Mom. I missed you so much."
Gabriel stood by the door, giving them a moment together. He watched the emotional reunion, feeling a sense of both sadness and gratitude for being able to support Emily in this difficult time.
Maria reached out and gently wiped away Emily's tears with her other hand. "I missed you too sweetheart, I'm glad you're here now, but what about your classes? Why aren't you…" Maria trailed off when she glanced at Gabriel. Then she got quiet when she took another look at him, and looked as if she had seen a ghost.
"Mom? Are you okay?" She looked back at Gabriel. "Oh, I'm sorry Mom, this is another one of my professors from Hogwarts. This is Gabriel Schell."
Gabriel walked forward a tad so that Maria could see him easier. "Hello Mrs. Dewhurst," He introduced himself to Maria.
Her eyes widened a bit, but she relaxed. "You don't recognize me, do you?"
Gabriel was a bit surprised, "We have met before? Forgive me, but I can't seem to recall.."
"It's quite alright, it has been nearly a decade and a half since we last met, and I didn't look like this," Maria waved it off.
"I'm sorry Maria," Gabriel sincerely apologized for not being able to remember her.
Emily looked at her mother, "Well maybe we can help Gabriel jog his memory?"
"Oh no. That's not necessary my dear," Maria gave her daughter a reassuring smile.
Emily nodded and then turned to Gabriel. "Thank you for bringing me here, Gabriel. It means a lot to me."
Gabriel smiled warmly. "You're welcome, Emily. I'm here for you whenever you need support."
Maria looked at Gabriel and nodded appreciatively. "Thank you, Gabriel, for looking after my Emily. It gives me peace of mind knowing she has someone like you by her side."
Gabriel nodded respectfully. "It's my pleasure, Maria. Emily is a remarkable young woman, and I'm honored to be able to support her."
The visit continued with Emily and Maria sharing stories and catching up on each other's lives. Gabriel quietly sat nearby, offering occasional words of comfort and support.
As the day went on, Emily reluctantly realized that it was time to leave. She hugged her mother tightly, promising to visit again soon.
"I love you, Mom," Emily whispered.
"I love you too, my dear," Maria replied, her voice filled with love and warmth.
Gabriel offered his arm to Emily as they left the hospital room. They walked down the hallway and out of the hospital, back into the fresh air of the woods.
Emily looked at Gabriel and smiled through her tears. "Thank you again, Gabriel. I am happy that I was able to see my mother again." She stifled a sob before continuing, "I just hope I'm strong enough for what comes next."
Gabriel returned the smile. "You're strong, Emily. Your loving heart makes you strong. and you'll get through this, but let's hope that doesn't happen any time soon. Remember, your friends, and I will be there for you, always."
Emily gave Gabriel a sudden hug, which Gabriel immediately reciprocated. Gabriel held her close as they apparated back to their point outside the grounds of Hogwarts.
"Here we are," Gabriel broke off the hug gently. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine Gabriel, no nausea at all," Emily responded.
"Attagirl," He gave Emily a smile. "Well we'd better get back inside, I think it's almost dinnertime."
"Right, I'm quite famished."
As they walked towards the castle Gabriel looked over at Emily, "Emily, do you happen to know your mother's maiden name?"
Emily looked at him, "Still guilty for not remembering my mother?"
Gabriel sheepishly shook his head.
"It's Atwell," Emily answered.
Gabriel shook his head, "Thank you Emily, now let's hurry on, I've worked up an appetite today."

Orion flooed into the second level basement floor of the Ministry Building. He was given ample permission from Scrimgeour to do light duty at home, but Orion turned that down.
He walked through the wooden doors, and past behind Gladys, the secretary stationed to speak with anyone wanting to get in touch with an Auror.
"Good morning Gladys," Orion greeted her.
"Auror Black, I'm surprised to see you here!" Gladys was Eighty-eight, but still sharp as a whip.
"This is my chosen profession, I want to be here."
Gladys shook her head, "I understand."
Orion nudged his head towards the bullpen, "What am I walking into Gladys?"
"It's not good Orion," Gladys confessed. "Over half of them hate you, less than that hate you but are willing to work with you, and even less than that don't know what to think."
Orion sighed, this had happened before after Silas' death. Between Silas dying, Orion not divulging his whereabouts, and Gabriel leaving the force after Silas' death, Orion was not the most well liked person after that.
Orion sighed before putting on a stoic face before entering the bullpen.
He walked into the office. There were several Aurors gathered around the tea service trolley. Once Orion came within their line of sight, they all got really quiet. Some of them scowled at Orion, others ignored him, and one Auror finished their tea and headed out of the office.
Orion took a deep breath, bracing himself for the tension that filled the room. He understood that his return to work wouldn't be easy, given the circumstances surrounding Silas' death and his own absence.
He made his way to his desk, passing by his colleagues without acknowledging their hostile or indifferent stares. Sitting down, he focused on the paperwork in front of him, trying to immerse himself in his duties.
One of the Aurors, an Auror named Burke, strode over to his desk. "Whad'ya think yer doing, Black?"
Orion opened one of the many folders on his desk, "My job, Burke. I'm doing my job, I'd suggest that you do the same before Scrimgeour gets on you for lollygagging."
"Oh. You're giving me my marching orders now?" Burke crossed his arms.
Orion saw that their compatriots were watching how this went down. He did his best to de-escalate this situation, "Not at all, I'm just making a suggestion."
"You can take your suggestion and shove it where the sun don't shine, Black!"
Orion knew this wouldn't end well, so he tried to just ignore Burke.
Burke responded to the silence by ripping the file from Orion's hands and throwing it over his shoulder. The papers went flying all over the place. "We don't want you here no more. So, do us all a favor and leave."
Orion didn't respond to him, and just opened another file to read.
Burke grabbed that out of his hands and pushed the files from Orion's desk onto the ground. "Get out…murderer."
Orion had about enough, and got up to put this latest arsehole in his place, but then Alastor Moody came to break it up. "That's enough, Burke!" Moody's voice boomed through the office, silencing the room.
He stepped in between Orion and Burke, effectively diffusing the tension in the room. Moody observed the situation with a piercing gaze.
"What's going on here?" Moody's voice boomed, commanding attention.
Burke glared at Orion before addressing Moody, "This traitor shouldn't be here, Moody! He's a disgrace to the department."
Moody's expression hardened, and his voice grew even more stern. "Auror Black is back, and he's here to stay. So get used to it, or find yourself another line of work."
Burke shifted uncomfortably under Moody's stern gaze. "Yes, Moody." Burke walked off back to his desk.
Moody glanced around the room, addressing the other Aurors who had been watching the confrontation. "Enough gawking, back to work! We have cases to solve and lives to protect."
The Aurors hesitantly returned to their desks, resuming their duties under Moody's authoritative command. Orion bent down to pick up the scattered papers from the floor, trying to restore some semblance of order to his desk.
"Put that away and come with me, Scrimgeour wants a word with you," Mossy instructed Orion.
He nodded, put away the files, and followed Alastor to Scrimgeour's office down the hallway.
They entered the room, where Rufus Scrimgeour was behind his desk organizing a few schedules for patrols. "There you two are, let's get down to brass tacks. Please have a seat."
Orion and Alastor took the seats offered to them, settling in as Scrimgeour turned his attention towards them. His stern expression conveyed a sense of seriousness.
"I heard that altercation from all the way down here," Scrimgeour began. "I understand that tensions are running high, but we cannot afford internal conflicts within our department."
Orion nodded, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. "I apologize, Rufus. I didn't intend for things to escalate."
Scrimgeour leaned back in his chair, assessing Orion with a penetrating gaze. "Your return to active duty was met with mixed reactions, as I'm sure you're well aware. Your absence and the circumstances surrounding it have left a mark on the department." He sighed, "But I will say that it is good to see you again."
Orion agreed, "Thank you. It's good to be back, I was going a bit stir crazy back home."
Scrimgeour nodded, "Orion, I'm not going to dance around the issue at hand so I won't. I've gotten word from a few people higher up, that a tribunal may be called for over what happened to Silas."
Orion felt his heart leap into his throat. He took some breaths to calm his nerves.
"Easy Orion, Rufus and I will do what we can to help you," Moody assured Orion.
Rufus nodded, "Yes, but in doing so it may cost you your career."
Orion looked over at Rufus, "What do you mean?"
Alastor Moody frowned, "You're a damn good Auror Orion, but it might be time to call it."
"What? Retire?" Orion couldn't believe what Moody was suggesting.
"Not entirely, you can always join the Auror Academy as an instructor."
Orion looked appalled and offended, "That's for old codgers with canes who go on and on about the glory days!"
Rufus cleared his throat, "You do realize I have taught a few classes at the Academy part time?"
Orion blanched as Moody held in a laugh, "Oh you know what I meant Rufus!"
Scrimgeour chuckled in a rare moment of levity, but got serious once more. "It wouldn't be a bad idea though Orion. You would still be involved in the MLE, just not doing any field work."
"I-I'm not doing that Rufus," Orion was adamant about not leaving the force in that manner.
"Orion, if this goes to court, and you're found guilty. The very least they'll do is take your badge." Rufus sighed, "At least consider it, Orion."
Just then a frantic knocking on the door was heard.
Rufus looked puzzled, "Come in."
A young recruit gave a salute to Scrimgeour, "Pardon me sir, but we have a problem!"
"What is it, Pavel?"
"It's Oslo Dain sir, he's here with a few members of the DIS. They want Orion Black to come with them for questioning!"
Orion's heart skipped a beat at the mention of the Department of Internal Security wanting to question him. He exchanged a quick glance with Moody and Scrimgeour. The both of whom wore concerned expressions.
"Tell them we'll be right there," Scrimgeour instructed the recruit, his voice firm but composed.
Pavel nodded and hurriedly left the office. Scrimgeour turned his attention back to Orion, his expression grave. "Orion, we need to handle this situation carefully. From what I've heard, the DIS and its inquisitors are relentless. We must ensure your rights and reputation are protected."
Orion nodded, his mind racing with thoughts of what the DIS might want to question him about. He had nothing to hide.
Moody leaned in closer to Orion, his voice low and intense. "Stay calm, Orion. Answer their questions, but be cautious with your words. We'll do everything we can to support you."
Orion appreciated Moody's support and advice. Taking a deep breath, he braced himself for the challenging ordeal ahead. "Thank you, Alastor. I'm almost certain that this is Oslo Dain's doing. That man has had it out for me for over twenty years!"
Scrimgeour stood up from his desk, his expression determined. "Let's not keep them waiting. We'll go together, as a united front."
Orion, Scrimgeour, and Moody made their way out of the office. They marched towards the meeting room where Oslo Dain and the DIS members awaited. Orion couldn't help but feel a mix of apprehension and determination as he prepared to face yet another challenge in his already tumultuous return to the MLE.
As they entered the room, Oslo Dain regarded them with a piercing gaze. Two other DIS members stood beside him, their expressions unreadable.
Dain wasted no time getting to the point. "Orion Black, we have reason to believe that you may have information about the circumstances surrounding Auror Silas Yalarad's death." Oslo stepped forward a step, hiding a smile as he spoke. "We would ask you to accompany us to tour headquarters for questioning."
Orion maintained his composure, meeting Dain's gaze directly. "I'll cooperate fully, Mr. Dain...
"High Inquisitor Dain, actually," Oslo flaunted his new title in front of Orion.
"Though, I must emphasize that I have already provided all the information I have during previous investigations," Orion pointed out.
Dain's eyes narrowed, his tone cold and calculated. "We believe there are still gaps in our understanding of what transpired. We aim to uncover the truth, regardless of any prior investigations."
Scrimgeour stepped forward, his voice commanding. "Inquisitor Dain, I trust that this investigation will be conducted fairly and impartially. Auror Black has already endured immense scrutiny and has returned to active duty with our full support."
Dain's expression softened somewhat, though a hint of skepticism lingered. "Rest assured, Auror Scrimgeour, our investigation will be thorough and unbiased."
Moody stepped forward, his formidable presence. "Is Orion under arrest? Do you have a warrant for his arrest?
Oslo Dain looked at Moody, and growled, "No, however cooperation now, will be best for all parties, Moody."
Moody looked at Orion, "It's your call Orion."
Orion stood his ground. "I won't proceed without legal representation. I know my rights."
Dain sighed heavily, clearly annoyed by Orion's request from him. "You..." Oslo bit his tongue, "Very well, we will arrange for a time and date for you to come in with your representation" He stepped forward menacingly, but Scrimgeour and Moody got in his way. "But don't think this will absolve you of your responsibilities, Black. The truth will come out."
"You know the truth Oslo, you know I had nothing to do with this." Orion got closer to him, and whispered. "If I had anything to do with it, Gabriel would have already killed me!"
Oslo glared daggers at Orion, "Then perhaps he left you for me."
"Your hatred towards me has blinded you, Oslo. And that makes you far more dangerous than I ever could be."
Dain's gaze flickered between Moody and Scrimgeour, a silent acknowledgment of their positions.
Oslo backed away with a hate filled stare locked onto Orion, "Very well, we will proceed with the questioning at another time and place." He gave one look towards his former superiors, "But be advised, any attempts to obstruct our investigation will have consequences."
With a wave of his hand, the other two DIS Inquisitors followed him out of the MLE offices.
Orion watched as Oslo Dain and the DIS inquisitors left the room, a sense of relief washing over him. However, he knew that this was only a temporary respite. The looming investigation and the potential consequences weighed heavily on his mind.
Scrimgeour turned to Orion, his voice filled with determination. "Orion, we will stand by you every step of the way.
"We'll stay vigilant, Orion. We won't let them railroad you." Moody's gaze never wavered from the door through which Oslo Dain had exited. "And it might be time to inform Marius Prince of this little exchange."
"You're right Moody, if I've got any hope. Then I will need to prepare for what comes next."
~*~* Page Break ~*~*
As the night fell Maria Dewhurst was in her room. Although she was exhausted, Maria found it hard to fall asleep.
So, she was reading a book to pass the time. As Maria turned the page she heard footsteps outside her room. She figured it was an orderly or an attending making their rounds, as visiting hours were over.
The footsteps stopped outside her door. It was almost as if the person was hesitating to come inside in case she was asleep.
Maria put a bookmark on the page, and put the book down. "You can come in."
A moment passed before the door opened and closed quickly, but Maria saw nobody enter.
Maria wondered if she was having a hallucination, or something. She took a shot in the dark, "Is that you Gabriel?"
"...Yes…" Gabriel took off his invisibility cloak, and appeared before Maria. He shrunk it down into the size of a handkerchief before putting it into his pocket.
Her shot hit its mark, "I wondered if you would come back. I take it, you remember me now." Maria motioned for him to take a seat right by me.
Gabriel strode over and took a seat next to Maria. "It took me asking Emily for your maiden name, but I remembered. Mary Atwell, as I live and breathe."
Maria chuckled, "I haven't gone by that name for a long while, not since I had Emily."
Gabriel looked down at the floor, "I'm sorry Mary..Maria. The time we spent together happened during a time in my life that…"
"Gabriel, you don't have to explain. I remember what you said."
He looked at Maria, "I told you?"
Maria shook her head, "You told me how your first love broke your heart. How alone you were, despite your friends trying to cheer you up. Also quite frankly you were at the bottom of several bottles when our paths crossed."
Gabriel looked ashamed, it had taken quite a bit of effort on his part, but he was seven years sober currently. He had no intention of drinking ever again.
"Yeah, I wasn't…I didn't have the best memory back in those days. Which is why it took me a while to remember you."
"Well I certainly remembered you. You charmed me, romanced me, plied me with tequila, and then we spent a weekend together in a hotel in Manchester."
Gabriel blushed, "Yeah I…I remember that part."
The two shared a laugh about that. "Afterwards I tried looking for you, but you must have left town."
"Yeah I…I was basically hopping around from place to place as I was working."
"Yeah as a cop, or something?"
"Well yes in our world we call them Aurors. I was an Auror at the time just freshly minted, and…looking back I probably wasn't in the right headspace to be an Auror."
Gabriel looked at Maria, and was quiet. A growing silence started to come between them.
"Maria, about Emily…" Gabriel looked at Maria, about to ask a question that he was unsure about if he wanted answered.
Maria shook her head, "Yes, Gabriel. She's yours."
Gabriel started to breathe a bit heavier, but Maria took his hand in hers. "Gabriel, it's okay. I don't blame you, you had no idea."
"I blame myself, because I vowed to never do something like that. I… I'm sorry Maria, please forgive me."
"There is nothing to forgive Gabriel." Maria thought back to those early halcyon days, "At first it was hard, but I had my parents to support me during the pregnancy. I worked as a waitress until I had to stop in order to prepare for delivery. Then I had Emily, and seeing her made everything worth it."
Gabriel still felt guilty as sin, "Emily mentioned her father, and that he had passed?"
"Yes, that would be Eustace. I dated and later married him a year after I had Emily. He adopted Emily after we were wed."
Gabriel sat back in his chair, his mind was aflutter with thousands of questions. "How much does she know?"
"Well, when Professor Slughorn came to give Emily her letter, I told her about her true lineage. That her biological father was a wizard, but apart from that I knew nothing more. It was a bit hard for her to head that. For all she knew at the time Eustace was her father."
"Maria, did you tell her that I was her father?"
"No. Honestly, she didn't want to know, in her mind Eustace was her father, although he wasn't her biological father, she was his daughter."
Gabriel shook his head in understanding. "What are you going to tell her?"
Maria looked at him, "What do you want me to tell her?"
"...I don't know." Gabriel was speechless, he had never been in this situation before.
"I'll sit her down and tell her everything before the end, and if you'd like you can be there as well," Maria assured Gabriel
Gabriel looked at her, "What do you mean before the end?"
Maria sighed, "Gabriel let's cut the crap, I'm…I'm on my way out."
"Don't say that. Don't spout off nonsense."
Maria started to tear up, "Gabriel, I don't have it in me anymore to fight anymore. I…I'm tapped out."
As the weight of Maria's words settled between them, Gabriel's heart sank. The guilt he had seemed to intensify in the face of the impending loss.
Gabriel reached out and held Maria's hand tightly, his voice trembling with emotion. "Maria, I can't imagine what you're going through right now. But please, don't give up. We can find a way, we can fight together."
Maria looked into Gabriel's eyes, her gaze filled with a mix of sadness and gratitude. "Gabriel, I appreciate your concern, but the doctors have given me their prognosis. There's nothing more they can do. The cancer has spread from my lungs, and is ravaging my body. I've started making preparations for the end."
Tears formed as he struggled to find the right words. "We can seek other opinions, explore different treatments, do whatever it takes. I-I've come into some money, I can pay for any sort of treatment." Gabriel shuddered, "You just came back into my life, I don't want to lose you. I…I can't do this without you."
A small smile formed on Maria's lips, and she gently brushed away Gabriel's tears. "Oh, my dear Gabriel. You haven't lost me. You found me again, and for that, I'm grateful. But sometimes, we have to accept the things we cannot change."
Gabriel was at a rare loss of words.
Maria's expression softened, and she leaned in closer to Gabriel. "Please understand that my time is limited, and I want to make the most of it."
Gabriel took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "What about Emily? How will she handle all of this? I want to be there for her, to support her."
Maria nodded, understanding his concerns. "I've thought about that too, Gabriel. I believe it's important for Emily to know the truth about her parentage, about you. But it's a delicate conversation, and I want to handle it with care."
Gabriel's voice trembled as he spoke, his voice filled with regret. "I wish I could go back and change things, Maria. I wish I had been there for you and Emily all those years ago."
Maria's touch was gentle as she cupped Gabriel's face, looking deep into his eyes. "Gabriel, we can't change the past, but we can shape the future. You have a chance now to be there for Emily, to be the father she deserves, if that's what she wants. That's what matters."
A mixture of sadness and determination filled Gabriel's heart as he nodded, acknowledging Maria's words. "You're right, Maria. I will be there for Emily, now and always. She'll never want for anything."
"Thank you Gabriel," Maria thanked him. "My parents have long since passed, and I was their only child. It'll be up to you to look after her."
"I will, I promise Maria, but I want you to promise me something in return."
"What is it?" Maria looked intrigued.
"You say that you are done fighting, but I want you to just keep fighting for just a little while longer." Gabriel saw the look on her face and raised a hand. "I know, but please hear me out. I want to try and see if there isn't anything we can do for you from the medical services where.i come from. Let us at least see if there is something that can be done!"
Maria thought about it, "What if nothing can be done Gabriel?"
Gabriel took Maria's hand, "Then I'll make sure your remaining time is as comfortable as I can make it."
Maria sighed, "Very well, I suppose we should see what can be done from your world."
"I'll set everything up as quickly as possible, and hopefully by tomorrow morning, you'll be at St. Mungo's."
Maria chuckled before breaking out into a laugh, "St. Mungo's, what kind of place is that?!"
Gabriel smiled as he chuckled with her, "It's one of the best Wizarding hospitals in the country, and with luck they will find a treatment for you."
Maria felt something she hadn't felt in a long time, and that was hope. And it came from the most unexpected place, that being her former fling, Gabriel Schell.
