"I can't let you die...You're all I have left to remember Kimimaro."
Jugo
The sun began to set sooner than any of them could predict, but it snowed even quicker-so much in fact that it wasn't exactly a surprise. It was more of a nuisance, because even with chakra control it was frigid out, and they couldn't let their bodies get passed a certain temperature.
The mountains in which the Hagoromo were situated were treacherous, and perhaps that was being light. From a distance it looked to be one giant mountain, situated on the horizon like an ancient monolith-guarding over the land. But, as one advanced and actually got behind the front of the natural structure would they see that it was entire mountain ranges and caves. Huge and small. Stable and weak. Some twisted, some craned, and others just tried to reach the upper atmosphere tired of the whole planet.
The first step onto the path resulted in a huge chunk of a mountain some feet away breaking off and sliding into another one-the collision was literally ground shaking, but when the second overturned on itself the destruction to ensure was beyond comprehension and it was a clear warning. If there wasn't one already, and it was a reminder of just who's territory they were in.
Unfortunately this happened over and over-granted it wasn't always something of mountain-size proportions breaking or smashing, but nonetheless it was, and it made walking-which should be somewhat leisure, like being on a war zone. If there was even one wrong step, just a part of a certain foot bone to touch a crack-the whole path that they're walking on could come tumbling down without any warning, along with everything around them.
Yuko flicked her eyes from the path to her surroundings, eyes starting to narrow some. So far, they were clear from any debris falling from their surroundings, but she wasn't going to hold her breath on that. There had been some close calls-an avalanche of dirt, snow, and branches came rushing down one slope just a few feet away from them. She wasn't sure if these three men were trying to get them killed by leading them into these areas, or if it was a way to get them to drop their guard in order to kill them.
She learned that she could never be complacent when it came to matters like this. If she just stayed in her own little world she'd end up getting swept up in the aftermath. There was always a hidden agenda, more than what meets the eye, and more than what a single person lets on. Never judge a book by a cover as the saying goes.
The short Hagoromo was being awfully distant, the second was a bit skittish, and the third seemed to be scheming something up.
But, surely the leader of this clan knew it'd take more than three men to just amuse Izuna. Three men wouldn't even bloody his sword, it'd take more than three men to take her down, and it goes without saying Ahiko could just dump them all on their heads, at the same time. It could be a ploy, sacrifice these men, or get them to provoke the conflict, they fall into it, and then there is war.
Or in order to avoid war they'd be at the Hagoromo's leisure with compensation of some sort...
But, the clan didn't operate in such wily ways as far as she knew-they were very forward and used force more than anything, though they weren't biased with communication. But, even then, they were a bit forceful. It's why the openly opposed the Senju-because they wouldn't follow what the priggish bastards were trying to set forth.
It can be said that Senju provoke and lead conflict in this way-if Hashirama founded his village, conflict would soon follow, it was only natural. The Uchiha didn't quell conflicts, but they didn't provoke them Senju. They'd sooner kill than anything else, while the Senju will always talk and try to communicate-except for Butsuma who was militant to the core.
That man had been an Uchiha in Senju skin-never in history had there been a Senju leader like him. Hashirama fit the role better. He had a similar mindset as his predecessors and strived to have peace more than anything. He didn't send children out to battle, handling everything himself-regardless of how much it burdened him.
Contrary to what people thought he didn't hate the Senju just because they're Senju. It was how they were, their ideals, the way they lived. The only reason he fought was because the Senju kept encroaching further and further onto their land-Tobirama was aiding Hashirama in all ways possible, and that man was far too narrow minded and pragmatic to be left unchecked.
He battled Tobirama because he was the biggest threat to the Uchiha, in his eyes. Hashirama, the foolish man, would treat the Uchiha with due respect and never slight them-he'd never make them feel like they're outsiders. But, Hashirama would be the same with all clans down the board-he'd never treat one better than the other or anything like that, he'd always be respectful. Tobirama on the other hand wasn't like his brother, and would do the opposite, by ostracizing the Uchiha.
Realistically he wouldn't be encountering any Senju unless they were intruding on his land, or during missions, and since the Senju's compound was locked down he wouldn't be encountering them at all.
He smirked to himself, almost amused.
"So, would you guys be able to tell me if Arata is the new leader of that sect of Uchiha?"
The shorter Hagoromo acted as if he didn't hear Ahiko, though he did turn around to look at her for just a second. Since he was leading them to their compound he had to keep his eyes forward and remain vigilant. Even though he's been navigating these mountain passes, and the surrounding landscape since he was a boy, there was always one or two places that himself and others never got to discover or be around, and that'd be the place where they'd meet their end by natural causes.
No pun intended.
"He is."
Izuna's brows furrowed, creasing the skin between his eyes.
It brought up only one possibility that held any merit. Arata awakened the Mangekyo. The Uchiha wouldn't follow anyone that didn't possess the powerful eyes-he and his brother set a new standard when it came to becoming a leader of the Uchiha. He and his brother had been worshiped practically, though he found it inane, and Madara just didn't care one way or another. The point being that Uchiha respected power more than anything, strength, and they idealized power.
The Mangekyo could slowly begin to change the person who awakens it if they don't keep themselves in check-the power and might that the eyes had, the acuity and prowess they granted, it was so easy to get wrapped up in that power. To become arrogant and hubris. Even if repeated use renders the user blind, they will be too enthralled with that power to keep it in reserve.
If Arata really did awaken the Mangekyo, his personality shifted so to speak. He didn't have the same foundations as Madara and himself, he was a different pedigree of Uchiha, one from a different generation. He'd be more arrogant, perhaps abrasive or belligerent as well. He was one of the strongest within the clan without a doubt, not quite on his or his brother's level, but he could push them when it came to kenjutsu.
"How was he?" Izuna prodded further.
"He is not the easiest of men to get speak with. My brother was never fond of him, too prideful for his own good." Ahiko said, concluding everything swiftly, but simply.
The second Hagoromo grunted. "He seemed cordial enough, at first. Our leader was wary and angry after the meeting, however. There had been a lot of yelling for some time between the two of them, to the point our second in command had to enter the room and quell the dispute. Both of them almost drew their swords on the other."
That made him tense. It didn't take much to get the Hagoromo started in the first place-they did mind their own business, but if they felt threatened, or were just angry, they'd turn into a literal nightmare. However, their leader at this moment was more level headed than those who came before him, though he was still aggressive in his own right. If it came down a battle of egos and pride, Izuna could see how things would implode to such a point that they were yelling and about to fight.
Pride meant everything to the Uchiha, and meant even more to the Hagoromo. If pride was trampled or even brought into question between either of them it'd boil down to bloodshed-that's how much pride meant to both of them. There had never been any disputes like this between Uchiha and Hagoromo, that he was able to remember, but it was a strange time to be alive.
The world was changing.
If Arata went as far as he did...Hopefully he just didn't end the alliance with the Hagoromo or give them an ultimatum. The Hagoromo were one of the clans that could contend with the Senju, and having them assisting the Uchiha that weren't with him in the West always made him very relieved. There was no one more reliable to have on the field of battle than the Hagoromo-they just had no quit in them. If Arata believed he could take on all comers, by himself with the Mangekyo-he was mistaken.
If Arata did end the alliance then he would be leaving the Fire country with the Uchiha under him very soon, if he hasn't already.
Izuna shifted his eyes on the three men.
"Are we close?"
"It'll take a little while longer."
Izuna flicked his eyes onto the three men-one in front, two on the side, he debated if he should stop dead in his stride. It wouldn't be a good move to do so, at this point they had just been leading them around-stalling, there had to be more of them around.
Remaining calm he shifted his arm up, hand immediately clasping the handle of his sword.
The three Hagoromo snapped away from the trio, sliding across the snowy ground as an explosion sounded off-the sudden glare beamed through the darkness of the wilderness.
Before the three Hagoromo even stopped, twenty more of their surged around them landing on the ground.
Izuna-Sharingan activated, stood crouched on the ground, sword already drawn and clasped tightly in both hands.
Yuko and Ahiko were on either side of him-a few inches apart, Yuko with her Sharingan active, sword drawn, and Ahiko with a sword drawn-surprisingly.
"We've been expecting you for a long time, but we hoped you wouldn't come." The tall Hagoromo said, eyes narrowing. "I'm Enishi, leader of the first division."
"Yuko..."
"Yes?"
Izuna frowned. "Try not to focus too much chakra into your eyes, okay?"
Yuko nodded, having already come to that conclusion. She didn't rely on the Sharingan too much, anyways. It is true that during her training with the Domou she had to keep it active, but that was so the strain didn't bother her, and after some time she could keep them active all day and night, except when she went to sleep.
"Enishi, do you know what you are doing?" Ahiko questioned, voice uncompromising as her gaze hardened. Making a move against her was more than enough to warrant Mikito and everyone else steamrolling through here.
"If we associate ourselves with you than Arata will no longer be our allies, and that is something we can't afford. We can't give him reason to relocate to the Lightning country. Our clan has many enemies, and without the Uchiha's alliance and their staying here it may be too much for us to conquer."
Ahiko scowled, trading a worried look with her comrades.
If Arata was truly playing this sort of game then that meant the alliance with the Hagoromo ended the second he arrived to this compound-in doing so, the Hagoromo do this and then they are headed into a war-a war they will not win, by any means. As relentless as they are, the Domou would blitz through them and level them without reprieve and that was times a thousand now that there were Uchiha with them.
Arata relocates the Uchiha, they prosper and repopulate while growing stronger. Meanwhile the Hagoromo suffer losses beyond count due to war and their bullheaded tactics-like this one they are performing right now. There's only so much force could accomplish before ine had to ease back and be more harmonious and receptive with others.
"Doing this isn't the answer, Enishi. Stop this folly."
"If she is harmed all of the Domou and the Uchiha with them will go on a rampage. Trust me, I've seen just one Domou rampage and that is a sight to see, I'd hate to see all of them on a rampage." Izuna added sternly.
He wasn't lying either...Just Mikito was fearsome enough when she lost it, that's not including Souji, Isamu, Isami, and everyone else. There would be little stopping them if it came to that point.
Enishi grunted, but kept his sword gripped tightly. He didn't have much of a choice, while his leader did wish to speak with this trio-the second in command and himself were not so gracious. It wasn't worth the risk, if the alliance was discarded they would go extinct, and it was something he'd prevent at all costs. There wasn't any line he wouldn't step over, but going to war with the Domou...
It wasn't something they could afford.
Not at this point in time-the Hyuga were growing more and more aggressive, and there was always the viable threat of the Senju clan as well. The Hagoromo feared no one, and nobody could match them, but even he knew when the odds were against them-he wasn't a barbarous Kaguya that just revels in slaughter. He didn't laugh hysterically when he seen one of his own get cut down, or when he cut down someone else,
"Let's just talk, Enishi." Ahiko said, voice pleading, but held a sternness to it.
"I've heard the Domou and Subatsu put being together above everything else. You must understand then, why we have to do this." Enishi said, voice hard.
Ahiko couldn't say that she didn't understand. She understood all too well, in fact. She would admire their resolve and devotion any other time, if it was any other time she would applaud them-but this isn't that time. These men are being pulled into something beyond them, but they merely follow orders and that's it-no questions asked. It's a shame since Arata knows full well what he's caused-the possible extinction of the Hagoromo.
"Enishi. Arata never had any intention of maintaining the alliance. The second he stepped a foot in this compound your alliance with that sect of Uchiha was over, that much is clear to me at this point. But, even more importantly he's already begun the process of relocating that sect of Uchiha if he hasn't already cleared the borders by now."
Izuna was severe in his analysis.
The bit of news smacked with gravity, but Enishi didn't loosen up at all. If they already deduced that much then he had nothing to lose-they had nothing to lose, Izuna, Ahiko, and Yuko would call for back up once they're done wiping him and all of his men out, and then attack his compound with full force. He'd die now or die later, and he'd rather die protecting his kinsmen more than anything.
Ahiko seen the look in their eyes and reacted immediately, but not before Izuna.
Three men came all at once, one darting with a stab while the other two followed behind-slashing through the air. Despite their coordination, Izuna parried the first move, foot already sliding forward as the gleam of steel was no long suppressed-with a small turn he struck out in rapid succession. One blade was knocked away, flipping off into the bark of a nearby tree trunk.
The attacks continued.
"Why are they doing this?" Yuko was moving, hastily evading a stab while slamming her palm against the attacker's chest, knocking another three back with a winding kick.
"The clan is threatened. Whenever a clan is threatened shit hits the fan, but when the Hagoromo is threatened this happens." Izuna said bluntly, shoving three men away with a stiff palm.
The blade came at her, but with a nimble turn Ahiko evaded the cleaving swing, latching onto his wrist with one hand and wrenched his arm behind his back, grabbing a hold of his jaw with three of her fingers. How easy would it be for her to kill him, to just swing her arm back, but she didn't give into that impulse-and the noise surrounding her didn't disorient her at all.
"I will say it again. Let's talk. If you don't take me to your leader he will be furious, I want to speak with him. I don't wish to kill you, but if you keep pushing me I will have no choice. I could pluck your head off right from your shoulders at this second."
Enishi didn't move an inch-if he did his neck would snap in two or he'd wrench his own arm, and shoulder blade from their rightful places, thus making bone pop out through his skin.
"Tell them to stand down. Take us to your leader, immediately. We must speak with him." Izuna said with a flinty glare, his eyes glowing red as he kept one arm extended, the threat of steel enough to keep everyone away..
"You don't need to die over something like this...Don't you have a family?" Yuko looked at Enishi, silently pleading with him to just swallow his pride.
It came down to pride in the end, though he wanted to protect his clan, it was pride driving him to such lengths in the first place. Only men cared so much about pride. He was only following the orders of his superiors-while their leader wished to speak with them, Enishi, and a choice few were opposed to it. She was starting to understand why since it threatened the clan's longevity in the long run of things-unlike the Uchiha; longevity of the clan is a big thing for the Hagoromo.
However, it was already threatened. Arata already made up his mind-he most likely awakened the Mangekyo, and now found the Hagoromo to be useless since he was high on power and left them to whatever cruel fate was in store of them. Truly, the man's priorities were somewhere else, somewhere they shouldn't be in the first place.
Enishi only clenched his teeth, slowly, but surely sheathing his sword. "Be at ease men."
Though reluctant, they still listened to him.
Yuko sighed, sheathing her sword swiftly.
It took another twenty minutes to reach the Hagoromo compound from their location-no longer bring lead astray into a trap.
There was only noise as she entered the foreign compound-never before had she seen the inside of the Hagoromo compound. She knew that Uchiha would come here every so often, like her father, but she's never been here herself until now. The first thing she noticed was that everyone wore above the age of six wore these thigh length garments of pure white with inverted tomoe-like designs on the collar, with a full length black suit beneath it and boot-like sandals.
There were scorns, curious looks, angry looks, shock and aghast, even fear, and there were some that just didn't care. Nonetheless it was all just too overwhelming for her-it assaulted her all at once, in one maddening barrage. Given the nature of the entire situation she could understand some of the looks she was getting at the moment along with her husband and Ahiko, but some of these people were ignorant or just didn't know the facts, and their stupid looks were much irrelevant and unnecessary.
Nobody made a move against them though, as they were lead in a eastward direction-passing many homes and training grounds along the way. She could feel the killing intent radiating for some-her hand remained on the hilt of her sword, clasped tightly, ready to draw it at a second's notice. It was always chilling feeling the sheer intent to kill and nothing less. Oppressive.
Finally, after about twenty minutes they were lead into an extremely large building-having seven stories in all, with balconies on each end. It was unfortunate she couldn't get a better look at everything, but it was better that they hastened to get out of everyone's sight than stick around longer for any reasons at all. Still, the Hagoromo were quite flamboyant with their architecture-what did their mansions look like, if they had them, she wondered.
The room they ended up in was quite spacious, with a row of kimonos and everything of the like for men and women perfectly set in place. It was almost as if this had been all pre-arranged. But, knowing the Hagoromo, this little thing could be in every single room-including the ordinary homes that had nothing to do with shinobi business.
"My brother doesn't care too much about being formal but at important meetings like this, those involved usually change twice, even five times." Izuna said.
Like Madara was going to change just to talk to someone...
"What do we do now?"
"We'll be talking with the leader shortly, and will be resting tonight. Tomorrow we will speak to the second in command and leader as well, but that is tomorrow." Ahiko said, giving Yuko a gentle pat on the shoulder.
Yuko nodded.
There were times when one had to act, and there were times when one had to wait. This is one of those times when patience and waiting is paramount, and not so much taking action. It gave them to time to strategize and plan for the discussion-while they would be just talking, from her observations with things like this, there was a silent battle going on between those involved.
She'd leave that to Izuna and Ahiko, but if the focus came onto her she would not be overwhelmed.
"Got it." Yuko gave a thumbs up, lounging on the large bed provided for her.
"I'm hungry, what about you guys?"
Izuna snorted, turning his attention to Ahiko. "I guess I could use some soup."
Much to his surprise Ahiko went to the door and slid it open. There was a young Hagoromo and an older Hagoromo standing guard outside of their room, both of them wearing serious expressions, but upon seeing Ahiko the younger of the two men began to act awkward being under her doe eyed gaze.
"Can you get us some food? Izuna-san wants soup. I'll take anything you have." Ahiko looked at the messy haired boy-he had to be about thirteen.
"Uhh..."
"It's fine, they've traveled a long way after all." The older man nodded.
"You're not going to put poison in there are you?" Ahiko asked, amusement in her tone.
"My leader will be gravely angry if he doesn't speak with the three of you, but I trust you'd be able to know if it was poisoned or not, given your expertise in the medical field."
Ahiko smiled.
"How charming."
Knowing that getting food at this very second wasn't going to be happening she shut the door. It really was a shame, but she brought always provisions just in case something like this happened. She nodded once, rummaging through her pockets while making her way back towards Izuna and Yuko who both changed out of their super thick clothing and were wearing something much lighter and comfortable.
"Izuna-sama, I really don't like the feeling of this..." Yuko spoke up after a second of thought, eyes narrowing more and more.
Before any conversation could commence the doors were slid open.
A man in his late forties stood with a strong posture. His eyes were a stark brown, sharp but observing. His skin was a little tan, and he had a thick head of dark brown hair kept up in a high tail-giving him a much more stern appearance than usual, when he had his hair down. He wore the same thigh length white garment that all of his kinsmen wore, with the exception of their crest being stitched on the shoulders, back, and front.
He was quite tall-standing at an alarming six foot seven. For his height, he was a burly three hundred and forty pounds, swollen to the bone with mass.
Everyone gathered, and in the world at large knew this was a dangerous man-one of the most dangerous on the face of the earth, but seeing this burly man in person really hit that point home. There was no way to describe how massive and tall this man was, one just had to witness this sight first hand. Though, he wasn't the most beefy or muscular person that he's seen, and not a mountain of a man like Atsushi and the Akimichi in general. They got to be nine feet, some, and up to twelve hundred pounds.
Sliding the door shut, the leader of the infamous clan took a seat on one of the beds, not seeming to care too much about formalities at the moment
. Surprisingly it didn't cave in against his weight, but held firm, not even budging the slightest.
"Shuji-san." Izuna broke the silence, giving a small bow of his head.
"It's been quite a while since I've last seen you, Izuna. You look to be in good health, stronger as well. I am sorry about your father, he was a man of many flaws, but he was still a good friend of mine. He was an amazing man, able to unify the Uchiha back into a single entity once more, putting an end to something that became common practice." Shuji said, inclining his chin in acknowledgment.
"A long time." Izuna agreed.
Indeed, his father was a great man-a man of merit, but his father was a man of many flaws as well. While Madara clashed with the Council. Their father would almost come to blows and spend hours going and back forth with them, there had to be some irony since he is the one that allowed those old fools to have the power and sway that they do in the first place.
Before, the changes he, Mikito, Souji, and Madara brought to the Council in general, and before his father had gave them such power-they were limited in their power, and while they could kick the leader out of his post, it couldn't be done so easily. But, now with the way they were doing things the Council was more of an actual force involved in everything, rather than just being about advising and such.
Though his father's death pained him, it was necessary in order for the Uchiha to move forward in the direction he and his brother wanted it to move in. Children being sent to war was one of the things he and his brother both immediately changed. His father's death was also necessary because through that experience he awakened the Mangekyo-he lost himself to emotions, the world around him miles well have been nonexistent.
His father would have never agreed to this change with the Council. While they pissed him off beyond any possible comprehension he wouldn't want it changed because like all Uchiha-he hated change and was strongly opposed to anything that wasn't exactly to his opinion or line of thought. But, they were moving forward, steadily, and he'd continue to ensure they moved forward.
"You will have to forgive Enishi and my men, they are loyal and fervent. Because of Takeshi-my second in command, a lot of Hagoromo are being riled up. Arata came here a few days ago, as you already know. Some of what happened during our discussions is known to those that shouldn't know."
Ahiko smiled gently, accepting the apology. "I understand. They are only concerned and following their orders."
Yuko nodded in agreement.
"Yes, even though those orders weren't given by me." Shuji remarked, a frown tightening his face.
It was a matter of principle. He was the leader, and regardless of anything everything command he gives should be obeyed. It was to be carried out without any question, but Takeshi, and a few others within the clan were getting too damn aggressive and they've forgotten their place-the Domou weren't their enemies and never will be, Things weren't set in stone with them, like with the Uzumaki, but the point still remained they'd never shed blood.
Some Hagoromo were under the idea that the Domou were going to be coming after them, that the Uchiha that live with them now are going to be joining in the melee, and he could credit it all to his meeting with Arata. The man had managed to make him angrier than he's been in a long time, while also boiling things to such a point that members of his kin could hear what was happening.
The Hagoromo took threats serious-if there was even a tenth of a threat they would attack without question. Arata had been very clear when he was here-he knew the man to be somewhat more arrogant than the average Uchiha and far too boastful in how he handled things.
"I don't know what was said, but if it's what I'm thinking..." Izuna trailed off, eyes remaining focused on the older man.
"I will be frank with you. That man has put the alliance into question." Shuji turned his focus onto his legs, eyes hardening.
"Do you mean..."
"The alliance with that sect of Uchiha. Not you, Izuna or those with you and the Domou. While things will be complicated because of the nature between the Domou and Subatsu-the former have an entente with us, I have no doubts that a harmonious resolution can be merited.
However, I can't say the same for the sect of Uchiha led by Arata. That man has made his intentions clear, and has slighted the Hagoromo-a grave mistake on his part. I won't allow him to lead us into extinction, even if that means there is no longer an alliance with that sect of Uchiha and myself."
Shuji clarified in a blunt, but hard tone. His strong arms were crossed over his chest.
Izuna sighed, relieved, but also not. This was just something to clear the air so to speak, tomorrow they'd get into the serious discussions and the details of the entire situation would be reveled, but for now it was all too vague. However, if things could get squared away with the Domou and Subatsu it'd be a huge boost-he enjoyed fighting the Subatsu, especially Haji and Ryoku, but he wasn't totally enthralled like his brother.
It'd be a hindrance if the two clans, and Madara are still like they are when he's trying to set the foundations.
"Arata has awakened the same eyes as you and your brother. The Mangekyo Sharingan, a grave power it is. I doubt he can beat me in one on one combat, but I could feel the power radiating from those eyes. There is something special and dark about them...It's almost like they grow stronger."
Izuna gently clenched his teeth.
The fact Arata awakened the eyes was alarming, for the simple fact he didn't have the same foundations as he and Madara-which means he'd get lost in that unfathomable power before drowning in it. The man must have killed someone close to him, or seen someone die close to him-there was little on how to awaken the Mangekyo. All that was put down was that the sheer emotion and stress an Uchiha goes under to awaken the Sharingan had to be duplicated, but even more dramatic.
In short if any Uchiha didn't have a stable foundation they would change...Slowly, but surely. If they weren't grounded here, with people, they would lose themselves. While it is true Uchiha treasured bonds and friendships it was a double edged blade, because bonds and friendships were just a means to an end in order to advance the Sharingan.
Indra even put as much.
Strength meant everything to them.
They'd start to exhibit the same behavior as their ancestor Indra. Uchiha didn't like to compensate or bend for others, but there was always a point where they'd be pushed, and they'd compensate or bend, but when they started showing the same behavior as Indra that is when things took a turn for the worse.
Bonds were tarnished and broken all for nothing.
His father behaved in the same way-thought the same way. Had the same mentality. But, where Ashura always tried to speak to Indra, being his brother, and have peace between them-Butsuma adapted a very similar mindset as his father and it became a matter of who killed the most children. Not only was it like this between the two of them, but because they were so vindictive and belligerent other clans began to take exception.
Clearing his throat carefully, Shuji let out a tired breath. "However, I digress. We will discuss this tomorrow. Let's shift our focus onto something more tangible."
Ahiko felt the chakra before anything else-before the words ever left Shuji's mouth she could feel the chakra. They had been here the whole time, perhaps before them, and while a part of her was relieved and excited with this, another part of her was just the opposite. Things could go very, very well from here on out, or things could spiral down faster than any single person could anticipate.
She cut her eyes towards the door-in the process of sliding open, and narrowed her eyes as she watched two people enter.
"Usagi!?" Yuko couldn't stop herself from standing up, half shocked, half ready for a fight.
She flicked her eyes onto Haji, who looked impassive more than anything-his muscular arms crossed over his chest.
In a dark blue kimono with a white obi, Usagi merely smiled in a cheeky manner. She was glad to see Yuko-after encountering and cutting down those Uchiha in that one village, and four more after that, it was refreshing to see the girl's bright amber eyes and equally bright red hair.
She took a seat across from Yuko, gently sweeping part of her kimono so she didn't wrinkle it. "I'm beginning to think it is fate that brings us back together."
Careful to ensure that the shorter girl didn't have a sword at her side, Yuko allowed herself to relax. She sat back down, fixing the shorter with a critical gaze-she hadn't been expecting Usagi or Haji to be here after all, nor did she sense their chakra the slightest. "Why are you here?"
"We have an entente with the Hagoromo. Though, this isn't just a normal visit. We are here for a reason."
"What might that be?" Ahiko asked, taking the reins since Izuna and Haji seen it fit to just stare the other down.
Haji turned his eyes from Izuna, closing them, not going to entertain the younger man with this stare down any longer. Things were getting a bit complicated, and a big part of it was what Usagi and those with her brought back. They did have an entente with the Yamanaka and Nara. While the two clans were comfortable at the moment, it wouldn't last if his clan and the Domou continued battling.
There were more clans they had ententes with...
"We are here to discuss a...temporary, or perhaps...Permanent...Truce...In the interest of the Hagoromo clan, Uzumaki clan, and all other clans we have ententes with, I believe that the Domou and Subatsu should stop fighting for the moment..."
"Why?" Izuna asked, not the least bit hostile, but nonetheless wishing to prod.
"My clan has an entente with all of the clans theirs does. However, we are on very good terms with the Uzumaki, the Subatsu are on very good terms with the Hagoromo. Neither of us has encroached on the other despite this, but with the recent entente made with the Yamanaka and Nara-it complicates things because if we battle again..." Ahiko trailed off, brows furrowing.
All of the clans they had ententes with knew they'd battle-it's just how things are, but with the list starting to grow they really needed to consider a truce or something-it'd do no good if the Yamanaka and Nara began to get afraid of being pulled in or forced to take sides-even though it wouldn't happen, the thought will come to pass in their minds if it hasn't already.
However, what happened between the Domou and Subatsu stayed between them-the only time another person was involved was if they interfered, and that is all on them.
Fighting really couldn't be the answer this time around.
People were sick of fighting. Sick of the fighting. Shinobi. Civilians. Even a lot of the nobles were all tired of the endless conflict-children were being kept in compounds instead of being sent out. People weren't willing to go to such lengths to preserve their pride-the pride of the clan anymore, no one would ever take getting slighted lying down they weren't going to send ten children out to battle, while killing another twenty from different clans by themselves.
However, it didn't mean the fighting would stop, and for all those that were sick of it, there were those that craved it...Wanted it. Needed it. Damiyos and nobles still contacted shinobi clans and shinobi clans still provided their services for the due payment.
Something had to give eventually, but who or what that was she couldn't guess. She didn't want to even entertain the possibility of guessing. But, no matter how things shift, or if villages are founded, nothing will change so long as the nobles rule and control the land, and shinobi sell their services. It'd just be going from shinobi clans to shinobi villages, the villages would sell their services, take missions, and that'd incite war.
However, Haji while being more calm than his siblings, had a streak of stubbornness that was almost second to none. To ever consider him proposing this, instead of coming at her brother with his sword arcing, was something she hadn't considered the least bit feasible. It wasn't even in her imagination. What happened in order for him to do this?
She did love Usagi like a sister. They had all been best friends-Gentatsu, and all their respective siblings. It pained her having to fight Usagi, and she knew the girl felt the same exact way-peace between their clans was something always on their minds.
"Well, I accept in any case." Izuna decided, giving a strong nod to all those gathered.
If anyone had been doubting or questioning where his mindset was, well there wasn't any question now.
"I find nothing wrong with it..." Yuko shrugged gently.
She wasn't sure how long it'd last, but she was glad that they could actually talk their problems out and not resort to violence straight from the outset. After all the Uchiha and Senju always had momentary truces-usually during the winter months. It just wasn't what Hashirama wanted. They weren't chummy and living together, building a village together.
"I can't imagine your brother is going to be happy about this. Madara too for that matter." Ahiko directed her focus onto Haji, then onto Izuna..
"He will see reason, I assure you. I don't think Mikito will be too happy, either." Haji gave a small nod.
It would be complicated-his brother loved to battle Madara.
"She will see reason." Ahiko repeated the words uttered by the man not even a second ago.
It would be complicated as well-because her sister did anything but avoid or back down from Syrus, she lived for those showdowns.
"What about Souji?" Yuko threw the question out there before things got too far ahead.
"Yes, it is curious." Shuji interjected.
"He will do what is best for every single person in the clan, there won't be a disagreement at all." Haji said bluntly.
"That just leaves the method in which this will happen. I know the Domou and Subatsu aren't one for formalities, but even your clans tend to stick to traditions when it comes to this sort of thing..."
"Marriage will be the best way to ensure things stay stable between our clans. It'll keep certain people in check." Haji nodded, eyes on Shuji, having no problem in saying it-it was the truth after all. Nor did he have trouble admitting he was agreeing with Shuji on the matter.
Ahiko felt all of the oxygen leave her chest. For a moment she believed that Haji had other reasons for doing this-that he wouldn't stand firm on his decision and see it through. But, he was willing to admit that a marriage between them-Domou and Subatsu was the only way in which things would remain stable between them, and the best way to ensure that.
But, it left few people would could actually marry-both of their kinsmen marry early and have families early in life. There are people like Syrus, Harada, Tsugi, Sanosuke, and Souji that don't get married and want nothing to do with it in the first place. They usually die alone, die with their comrades in battle, go to brothels to get the release, or they stop being inept after some years and get married.
That being noted, it meant that there were few people who could get married.
Usagi was one, that could, but there were boundaries being pushed and things set into place-and she didn't want either of them. It wouldn't be as bad or dramatic now, as it would have been if the Council remained the way it was, but still...
This was a huge move, drastic even.
"I know this may sound strange coming from me of all people, but I don't mind marrying anyone from the Domou clan. I know there are few that are able, since the rest are married, but still...I'm tired of all of the fighting between us, it's been going on for ages...Almost as long, if not longer than the Uchiha and Senju and the Shimura and Sarutobi." Usagi said, keeping a somewhat firm tone. She felt a little bashful-she didn't want to come off as soft, but she hated having to fight Ahiko, and more recently the Domou as a whole."
For so long they've fought and fought, some have even killed each other in the same motion...No one walked away alive.
She wanted it to stop, period, but she'd take what she can get at this moment.
Syrus was starting to get too ridiculous.
"I give my approval, as well." Haji nodded slowly, giving his sister a careful look.
"But that's setting things and standards into place that-" Ahiko was quick to rebuff his statement, only to be cut off.
"I learned from the disaster with Tobirama what happens and what can happen. I feel comfortable with her being married to a Domou man, they will not treat her with the same disrespect and disregard that Senju did..."
Ahiko closed her mouth, carefully considering her next words. She didn't want a political marriage between them, even if Usagi wasn't willing to marry someone from her clan and it was a different Subatsu woman, she still wouldn't want that woman to marry just for political reasons. There has to be love, and the only way that happens is if things are able to happen naturally among the two involved in the union.
"I am not opposed to this, but I don't want it to be a political marriage. Things of that nature always go up in smoke, literally" She said, tone firm.
"I understand..." Haji narrowed his eyes slightly. "I believe Shin is a good choice for my sister. We've fought many times, he is immensely strong and talented, and I don't have to worry about him behaving like Tobirama did."
Shin is handsome and strong... Usagi thought in silence, not saying anything on the matter.
She already spoke her piece after all.
She was an honest woman.
Shuji smirked for a moment, slowly standing up to his feet. "It's a good thing your clans have underwent some changes, if this had been done before I am certain there'd be a catastrophe. You both may stay in this room if you like, though I think you'd prefer to be in your room, Haji."
"Indeed." Haji agreed, he locked eyes with Izuna before slowly standing to his feet and exiting the room.
"You two will do well not to fight in my compound." Shuji gave the stern warning.
"No worries about that." Izuna said easily. "However, I wish to speak to Takeshi. I must know what transpired during that meeting."
Shuji nodded. "I understand. You ladies will be all right alone?"
"Sure!" Usagi gave an easy wave.
Now alone, the three women just looked at one another.
"So..." Yuko cleared her throat, pinching the fabric of her pants.
"Want some sweets?" Ahiko broke the awkwardness.
"Do you have any brownies or cookies?"
"I might in a scroll, give me a second." Ahiko began to rummage through her pockets.
Usagi put her focus onto Yuko, finding joy in her somewhat awkward expression. Ah yes, how she missed the girl. She was a far cry from the average, 'pure' bred Uchiha, but in a good way.
"So, I heard you and Izuna-san are married now, congratulations."
Yuko smiled shyly, but immediately felt bad about it. "Thank you, but..."
Usagi gave a gentle hum, nodding her head in resignation. It was well known to everyone, by this point that her clan and the Senju were no longer in an alliance, and that her marriage with Tobirama had all but been incinerated. "Tobirama-san and I had our differences, as you've heard from my lovely brother."
"But, still...You deserve to be happy too, Usagi-san." Yuko said earnestly.
"No need to worry about me. I'm happy being able to teach all my little rascals the sword." Usagi said, giving a foxy smirk. "Besides if all goes well I'll be marrying Shin, and I will rock his world."
"I can't imagine your brothers would approve of your speech right now. I don't." Ahiko said, gazing at the girl out the corner of her eye.
"You could always be a prude, Ahiko. They're not in this room, and Syrus is inept, more so than usual recently. He makes me so mad. So, Yuko-san, is Izuna endowed or what? I bet your legs never touch the bed, Yuko-san. I know Ahiko's husband Hiyori has a third leg."
Yuko stuttered, almost choking on her saliva. "What?!"
"Usagi-san! Clamp it and stuff your face, before I stuff it for you!" Ahiko snapped out, face completely red.
This was mortifying!
"I'm just being honest! You're lucky to have such a strong man as a husband, Ahiko."
Ahiko scowled, throwing the scroll at the grinning girl.
"You were talking about his...!?" Yuko's entire face burned red-she thought Usagi meant an actual third leg, not that.
"Yes, she was." Ahiko said, face still a good bit red, but she sounded bored.
"What did you think I was talking about? Hiyori doesn't have three legs, you've seen him for yourself." Usagi laughed at Yuko's horrified expression, stuffing her mouth with a brownie for a second-with Ahiko's assistance.
Yuko shook her head, clearing away the haze of red from her features-this was going to be one long night.
The water was surprisingly placid the closer they got to one of the long and odd shaped islands surrounding her homeland. He wasn't suffering the effects of sea sickness and she wasn't being pummeled incessantly while trying to sleep. It was remarkably odd since while they were rather placid in the distance they still carried some force, and they were r but here they weren't even strong enough to give their boat a little jeer.
However, Mito wasn't the least bit surprised with the sudden shift, in fact she relaxed totally once the water became completely calm. One can credit the waves to the environment, but they were also being buffeted by the Kaiju deep beneath the ocean around them. Her homeland had many natural defenses-there were the islands surrounding it, there was the whirlpools surrounding it, and then there were the Kaiju and other natural predators that kept the waters clear of any intruders.
However, their greatest defense was their Fuinjutsu admittedly. The Kaiju beneath them would come roaring out of the water, millions of gallons cascading off of them, or just one of their body parts. Some of the beasts were huge, but there were others that were beyond any sort of comprehension or imagination. There was one which her father and leader, Hisao, battled with daily at one point before subduing it enough and chasing it away into a part of the ocean around their island.
She knew the beast to be a twenty tentacle monstrosity-one tentacle was an alarming eight hundred meters long and wide. While it didn't look like much in the middle of the ocean, the ocean being as vast as it is, if one tentacle was that gigantic what had the body looked like? Uzumaki from that time still alive say that Hisao got the beast out of water!
Of course he didn't do this with Fuinjutsu or with his bare hands. He did this with chakra chains. Chakra chains are something that ran in the Uzumaki-all clans had something that distinguished them in some sort of way. The Uzumaki have chakra chains. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, the shape always remains the same-chain links, but the size and color differ. Also, the exit points in which the chains exit also differ from Uzumaki to Uzumaki. Even though they use chains-no single Uzumaki's chain is the same.
Hisao's chains exited from his lower back, middle back, and ribs.
But, it was his Fuinjutsu in the end that kept the beast subdued, even after so many decades, they've never had to encounter it.
Thanks to his prowess in sealing they didn't need to worry about that damn thing coming out of the water to eat them at this very moment. It was the same for all of the Kaiju and monsters surrounding them. They never used their fuinjutsu to control them. They only used their fuinjutsu to keep them out of their fishing, travel, and docking paths, and also away from the shoreline of her homeland.
But if there was anyone dumb enough to even think of intruding that thing would be up on the surface faster than they could complete their next thoughts.
As the boat eased onto the sandy shore-moving through the grainy path for a few short minutes before coming to a stop. A pretty good size trench was left behind them, but as water rushed up on the shore some of the blemish was slowly, but surely done away with.
Hashirama jumped down from the front of the boat, landing all but silently. He hastily rolled up the sleeves of his black shirt, tempted to take it off, but refrained since Mito was landing right beside him. The temperature was tropical to say the least. The air was packed with moisture, and as he let his eyes survey his surroundings he caught light dancing on the boisterous palm tree leaves, just a few feet ahead, and realized the light was dancing because of the dew nestled on all the leaves.
It wasn't quite humid, but given it was night time that would make sense. It was also winter, and while this area didn't seem too effected by the masses of white and gray, once the sun went down there would be a few degrees difference, but nothing too alarming. More or less, he just hadn't been expecting such a dramatic shift between the mainland and here.
There was a chorus of sounds coming from the wilderness around them-everything from squawking to skittering. It echoed and reverberated off the trees gathered all around them, it was disorienting to some extent. The night was alive with life, and green lights danced across the sky as the Fireflies congregated together searching for mates and food.
The moon encased everything, being the center piece of the whole scene.
"They must be on the main island, I can't sense anyone here." Mito mused, eyes on the moon above while her senses stretched out.
Hashirama shook himself from his thoughts-focusing just a little bit.
"Should we be concerned?"
"No. They'll be here in the morning, before the sun rises. While our fuinjutsu does keep the Kaiju and other monsters at bay, we can't always avoid them, and they can't always avoid us either."
Hashirama licked his dry lips, fishing through his pockets until he pulled out a scroll and quickly opened it-grasping the canister of water and chugging it.
"That's what I mean, though. Should we be concerned about the Kaiju?" Wiping his mouth with his forearm, Hashirama continued on where he left off.
Mito hummed softly. "In truth, one should always be concerned about the Kaiju. They roam the oceans, and while there are some concentrated here, there are more in the waters that lay beyond. Hisao-dono has subdued the worst of them in this area, and what I consider to be the worst of them all. He was just around your age, maybe younger, when he performed these feats."
"What's the worst in your opinion?" Hashirama asked quickly, a bit too quick for his liking.
"All of them. But, there is a Kaiju with twenty tentacles that once rampaged through these very waters, and it endangered our clan. Just one of its tentacles is eight hundred to one thousand meters, now considering that it is in the middle of the ocean it doesn't seem like much...But, the Uzumaki that are still alive from that time say that just one of its tentacles was enough to blot out the sun completely and smash an island in two.
All of their efforts were in vain-many lost their lives.
Once this beast devoured all of those who were trespassing our waters-which was a lot, Kaguya and Hoshigaki among the many, it turned its sights onto us. Hisao-dono battled it for a week straight, day and night, before finally hauling the monstrosity out of the ocean, sending it back into its depth."
"Jeez..." Hashirama whistled, scratching the back of his head.
His Wood Oni was nothing to scoff at-in sheer size and mass there was little that could compare to it. But, just one of this beast's tentacles was twice that size, perhaps even more! To see such a thing must have really sent fear into the heart-there was no way to be brave and keep a straight face before something like this, even the Bijuu would struggle against such a monstrosity. They may be larger than mountains, but this monstrosity had tentacles that dwarf mountains!
Just one tentacle was enough o blot out the sun from the land completely...
It's truly a testament to Hisao's prowess, strength, and courage that he not only fought with this beast for a week straight, but also hauled it out of its ocean cavern and sent it right back down.
Quite frankly he couldn't imagine ever trying to face off against such a thing-his Mokuton jutsus would be of little use, and he'd need to perform the more advanced ones, which still wouldn't do any good, and he doubted they'd be able to withstand the full weight of this beast-unlike Hisao's chains, his Mokuton could only bear so much.
Hisao did this when he was nineteen, maybe even a few years younger. It meant that for nearly four decades, if not more, that this monstrosity and others have been kept at bay thanks to Hisao. The Uzumaki have enjoyed a time of peace, perhaps the greatest peace they've ever had during his reign. The man was humble, caring, and sincere-his children meant everything to him, especially his daughters.
If only he was such a valiant man as Hisao...
He would have to listen to Hisao speak. Watch how he interacts with everyone.
Watch the Uzumaki in their state of blissful peace.
"Hisao-dono's chains exited from his lower back, middle back, and ribs. They were also gigantic, and when I say gigantic I mean that-they were more than enough to wrap around the tentacles and wrestle with that beast. He was also able to utilize Yoton and Inton with his chains. My father is aging now, and he still has his strength from his prime, but his body...I don't think he'd able to fight the monstrosity again and survive-his spine would be snapped to pieces even if he did manage to defeat it again..."
Hashirama frowned for a second. "Is there no one within the Uzumaki able to contend with this?"
She was proud of her heritage, but she knew when she was outmatched. Many Uzumaki were using chains back then against this beast, and they all fell, they were all devoured, the chains only proved to be something that the beast could use against them.
"No, there is no one that could contend with it now. Not even Ashina-dono, who's skill in Fuinjutsu is advanced even among our standards would stand no chance..."
Mito smiled brightly, shaking her head. "But, we don't have to worry about that for now-as long as my father is alive that monstrosity will always be a warning for Uzumaki children to listen and nothing more."
Hashirama nodded, leaning his back against the trunk of a palm tree. He didn't have it in him to speak anymore about it. There would always be a fear of this monstrosity for the simplest of reasons, and there had to be someone that could contend with the monster. Someone that could keep it at bay and subdue it-Hisao's body was aging and such strain wouldn't be good. If he wrestled with this thing again, it would be his death.
But, even he wasn't sure if he could do something against something like this.
He didn't want the Uzumaki to be wiped out-they were incredibly kind hearted, giving, and loving. Of course they had their quirks, their tempers, but it was all in love and good nature.
"Mito-san, do you mind answering something for me?"
"Anything."
"Well...How did the Uzumaki and Domou have peace?"
"Ah well, this happened many, many, many, many, many centuries ago, and believe it or not...It all started with love."
Hashirama blinked before nodding.
"An Uzumaki woman had been abducted and taken to the mainland, she was to be sold into a life of slavery or to a brothel which is the same thing in essence. However, just a night or so before they got to their destination a man with a blue haori stepped into their path. He spoke of oppression, the need for those with power to subjugate others.
It turned out it was his mission to wipe out those behind this human trafficking. After he killed all of those responsible for the tragedy he freed all of those in bondage, including the Uzumaki woman, and sent them on their way. However, the Uzumaki woman was taken by his character and couldn't accept going back home without him. The man couldn't stay with her or consider a relationship-he was bound by duty, and Domou can be strict when it comes to things of this nature. Angry she yelled at him and both went on their ways.
It wouldn't be until two days later that they'd meet again. In that time she had been found, and sold to a brothel. The man went to the brothel, and she ended up being at his side-the two instantly recognized each other, but the Uzumaki woman was angry-blaming him for the mess she was now in. The man rebuffed her complaints, putting it all onto her and her personal decisions.
They parted ways again. But, the Uzumaki woman was mortified when he left, because she knew that she'd have to pleasure other men against her will. For a moment of time, she had to endure, but it wasn't long because the man came back, killed who was about to take her purity, and hauled her onto his shoulder before departing from the brothel-through the front door.
This time the Uzumaki woman let him have it, but she refused to part ways with him again, and followed him all the way to his compound. Even when she was about to face death she remained firm on wishing to be with this man-she declared her love and fidelity. Since both of our clans are similar, the marriage was allowed to blossom and the two went on to have many children.
They started something wonderful-Domou and Uzumaki began to marry and have children, lots and lots of children. Some of them went to the Domou, and some went to the Uzumaki, but there was never any hard feelings between them. They're family and always loved each other, they may have been miles apart-but they were always together under the same blue sky."
Mito inhaled gently, letting her breath loose a second later. "It's been many, many centuries though since there's been a marriage between our two clans."
Hashirama felt like he understood completely, it all made sense now. The key to peace between his clan and the Domou was marriage. If he could avoid this fight with Mikito, by all means he will, but he was resolved to go that route if that was the only route to go. "Why?"
"Well..." Mito didn't meet his gaze completely, like normal.
Mikito would never deny one the chance to be together with the person they want to be with-if a Senju and Domou, an Uzumaki and Domou, found love together than she wouldn't disrupt that unity. However, as far as she knew there were no Senju women falling for Domou men, there wasn't even a glimmer of that-if her ancestors fell for them than they had to be quite exceptional, but Senju didn't operate like Uzumaki.
"It's because..." Mito trailed off once more, lips pursing tight. She didn't want to say it's because of the Senju, but in truth, it was. "Mikito isn't obstinate, if one of her kin were to love a Senju she would not punish them, nor would she slay their child."
"Really?" Hashirama forgot any semblance of manners and grabbed Mito by the shoulders, shaking her with force. He forgot about the fact Mito didn't give him a definitive answer to his question, and focused on this one thing he didn't know about Mikito.
"She adores children." Mito gripped the man's wrists, turned, and shifted herself out of his grasp. His reaction was well warranted, since many clans would kill a half blood, but he didn't have to shake her like a madman.
"It doesn't matter if they're half of something, a quarter of something, none of it matters to her."
"So, if I propose a marriage?"
Mito shook her head-this man flipped through emotions as much as she changed her mind on what kimono to wear.
"Things of this nature should happen on their own, not be forced. If you do a political marriage there will be no love between them, Domou are very wary of such things in the first place. The reason things worked out so well with my clan and the Domou many centuries ago is because that Domou man and Uzumaki woman met by chance...They could have easily never met at all."
She had a good point, but as Tobirama would say-love wasn't exactly needed at first. It would come as time passed and they settled into their new lives as husband and wife. Senju women weren't really arrogant, they have pride of course, but it was tamed in comparison to the men. They were modest and loving, even prudish, as some never bared any skin save in the company of their husband and solely their husband.
Forcing things like this is never a good idea, but he wanted to ensure-wanted to have peace with the Domou before the first bloom. What they had now was anything but, and even though the ferocious clan wasn't attacking-he had no doubt his kinsmen were wary and ready for conflict. Also, he knew no Senju women would want anything to do with the Domou at this point in time-the death of Hachiro was still on some Senju's mind and they were holding a grudge.
But, in all fairness...Even if he is a fellow Senju, Hachiro attacked first more than intent to kill Mikito.
He sighed, scratching his fingers against his scalp. The Domou weren't an obstinate or narrow minded clan by any stretch-the fact they didn't seek conflict with anyone else, even the Subatsu is a testament to that. He just made the wrong decisions, and some of those decisions he just couldn't take back or apologize for-even if he wanted to.
But, the relations between the Uzumaki and Domou were also paramount to him. It was beyond just the Senju and Uzumaki being distantly related; he genuinely cared and wanted the harmony they have with each other to stay in tact. It was a shame there weren't any more marriages taking place between the Domou and Uzumaki-when children were brought forth it changed everything.
"You said Uzumaki and Domou haven't married for many centuries...Why is that?"
Both of the clans were isolated and sequestered. They had their differences, of course, but there are a lot of similarities between them. Both were completely unified, for instance. It didn't make sense why they'd just stop marriages since there had been so many happening. The way Mito explained these unions of husband and wife brought forth many children, easily over ten.
There were only a few things he could think of that could cause such a thing was if the two clans came to blows-they didn't. So, that possibility was moot. The second would be if there was conflict brought onto them, but he doubted that'd actually stand in their way; so another moot. The third possibility was someone got in the middle of this union, and unions between the Domou and Uzumaki, and in order to preserve both clans decided to end that union.
This was very possible, but the clans still maintained their place.
They just weren't begetting sons and daughters.
Mito didn't hide her eyes from Hashirama, she couldn't. The man was persistent, for being such a dense oaf, he was quite perceptive and really thought about a lot of things. Spent a lot of time brooding, he was boisterous and jovial of course, but that's not what all made Hashirama who he is, and she knew that all too well.
There wasn't an easy way to say this, and quite frankly it irked her every time she thought about it. But, he asked her, and she would give him the answer he so badly wanted.
"The leader of the Senju at that time got in the middle because he felt threatened by the union between my clan and the Domou. The children they begot were immensely powerful, and their reserves were I'd dare say close to unlimited. They had the ferocious and wild chakra of the Domou, plus our combined life forces and vitality, they had the Domou training, their physicality and strength, but had peerless prowess in the Uzumaki Fuinjutsu. The Senju leader didn't want anything happening to his clan, he was scared, they all were, because these children dwarfed even their strongest shinobi's strength-both the Uzumaki and Domou took exception, to this, the leaders of both clans during that time were hostile about it-proclaiming that the Senju leader is only wishing to put conflict where there is no conflict.
To tear apart their union.
There were battles, and the Senju ended up trying to intrude on the Domou's land and that's when they were all massacred, including the leader. In order to make sure the Uzumaki didn't suffer any backlash the leader of the Domou ended all marriages between our clans-those that were still married didn't have to separate, but because of this many families went different ways never to see each other again...
Those Domou and Uzumaki offspring those unions brought forth have all but passed on from this life centuries ago. There were many, many, many generations, but now both the Domou and Uzumaki are pure, I guess you could say. We are not mixed, not like we used to be."
All but silent and saddened by this Hashirama kept his eyes trained on the ground. If his predecessors hadn't interfered than there'd still be a union between the Domou and Uzumaki, those families would have never have to separate in order to preserve, and all those generations of Domou and Uzumaki wouldn't have passed away with time-for there would still be many in abundance.
Seeing these offspring as powerful as they were, it's something he wished he could have seen.
"I'm sorry, Mito..."
Mito blinked widely, slowly turning her head so she could truly focus on Hashirama. His tense facial features, his furrowed brows, the glistening in his eyes, the way his neck muscles were stiff. In truth there was no need for him to apologize, this happened ages ago, and to apologize for the mistakes of those who came before while noble is just a little foolish. Nothing can change what happened.
The only thing that could happen is to change things for the better-have another union between Uzumaki and Domou, and maybe Domou and Senju as well. She couldn't think of going in a worse direction, because the world they lived in was as bad as it can get-anything worse and the ground may just split in two before gushing out lava-swallowing everything whole.
No, they could only progress.
"There's no need for you to apologize Hashirama...
"But, there is...I'm still a Senju, I bear the blame for this..."
"This happened long before our time, Hashirama. Long, long, long, long before our time. I find it noble of you to take the burden all on your shoulders, but there is no need. While the Domou and Senju fought back then, never was an Uzumaki's blood spilt by a Senju's hands or a Domou's hands. The mistake isn't yours and bearing such a burden...It's just too much. It is your predecessor's mistake, not your own. "
Hashirama wiped at his eyes, far too emotional at the moment, but he was very tired too.
Now that he thought about it...Mikito didn't exactly hold a grudge against him or the Senju-she was wary and beyond furious, but didn't hate them. She just hated what they stood for.
"When Mikito and I were talking before she mentioned our clans having a union again, but I think she's thinking on a larger scale."
"Larger scale...?"
Mito sighed gently. "Think of it like this...No more shinobi clans."
Hashirama took in the words carefully. There was a lot of ways to perceive this, and he didn't want to perceive it in the wrong way. Shinobi clans are clans, yes, but it's also a way to distinguish blood relations from one from another. Uchiha are Uchiha. Inuzuka are Inuzuka. By no means are they related, nor is their blood mixed, so they retain they are of the Uchiha clan and Inuzuka clan.
His eyes nearly bulged from their sockets. There'd be no village if that is the case, no villages that would follow, and there would no longer be countries, no nothing. It'd just be everyone, together, and nothing more. Shinobi and civilians altogether living in peace and harmony-there'd be no Uchiha or Senju because everyone would be mixed to such a degree they'd have at least seven different clans making them up.
If his father ever heard something like this he would be repulsed. Senju mixing with anyone else, even the Uzumaki was something his father thought of with such disgust. But, he didn't share those views at all, but in order for something like this to work it'd require everyone to stop caring about power, and everything else, and just focus on each other and love. If there's a way he could have it where there's a Domou-Subatsu-Uchiha-Senju-Yamanaka-Akimichi offspring in the far future, than he would find it.
"Such a thing is impossible to achieve on a worldly scale like that, though. The damiyos and lords would all have to be killed, so they couldn't provoke us or contact us anymore, and they also couldn't control the land...There's also lands beyond us, that have no shinobi, and they'd also raise their arms to fight. It'd just lead to more war in the end." Mito surmised, giving a small shake of her head.
For the entire world, it'd be impossible, but in an isolated part of the world...Perhaps not. A sanctuary in the midst of chaos and strife.
"We could make a pact with them." Hashirama ventured.
Mito just nodded, not having the heart to tell him what was wrong with that entire picture.
There was no damiyo in her homeland, and there is a reason for that.
"I'll start a fire, you go get us some fish and fruit." She smacked her hands together a few times before slipping off her kimono, revealing a full black bodysuit underneath.
Hashirama sighed in relief, slipping off his black top. He wasn't sure what he'd do if Mito wasn't wearing anything under there or if she was present to see him take off his shirt...His mother did raise him better than to show off in such a way around a fine young woman like Mito.
Now he had to really question his decision...Is it cooperation that is the key to peace? And what will pave the path to peace? What he's thought up to this point in time, or is love the key to peace as Mito presented it.
They are two very, very, different things, after all.
Never before has the night felt so long to him, and he couldn't sleep a wink.
He could only brood and think.
