Chapter 5 Scavenger Hunt

"Right the scavenger hunt," Groaned Akihisa under his breath, as he sat in class. It was just announced that 'Well at least this time I don't need to go hunting for that limited edition Fee phone strap.'

Earlier that day Akihisa had found the phone strap on the ground in the middle of a cross walk like an idiot. He took it with him to the otherside of the road before calling out if anyone dropped it. To his surprise, it belonged to Hazuki, he had forgotten all about the phone strap and the struggle he had to go through during the scavenger hunt.

'You know this might actually be fun this time,' he thought as he started looking at the list of prizes. "Full cafeteria food for a year, a brand new video game, limited edition cell phone straps." Akihisa stopped as he saw a prize for a meal from an expensive restaurant. 'Maybe I could use that to take Yui somewhere nice to apologize. No, I'm a highschool student, that would just make things weird.'

"Are you actually interested in getting a cell phone strap?" asked Yuuji.

"No," said Akihisa as he continued to scan the list. "I'm looking at that." as he pointed at a pack of computer accessories.

"Don't you already have a gaming rig?" asked Yuuji. "Why do you need more?"

"I'm working on a little project," hinted Akihisa. "And even if they're not that great I can sell them for cash."

"Oh, short on cash again?" asked Yuuji.

"Not as bad as usual," as Akihisa faked looking ashamed. "When your grandma gets worried about your spending habits you kind of take that to heart."

"Holy shit! You getting high is probably the best thing that could have happened to you."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Hideyoshi was also surprised. "Yeah, seeing being responsible is oddly weird."

Akihisa froze, 'Did all my friends really think I was an irresponsible moron, no they couldn't think that I was that stupid.'

"It is said that those who get close to death change their life." said Kota. "In Akihisa's case, it means he finally grew a few brain cells."

"HEY!"

"Hey, all of you sit down please." As Mia came into the classroom and walked to the front of the class while everyone took their seats. "Okay as you all saw we are having a scavenger hunt today."

Akihisa internally gasped. 'That's right Mia is my teacher now, that means she can pair me up with Himeji and Minami.'

"Since I just became your guy's teacher, Mr Nishimura was kind enough to make the groups beforehand." As Mia showed the board.

"WHAT! I'm with Yuuji and Hideyoshi," Shouted Akihisa before looking over to see that Kota, Himeji and Minami were in the same group again. "Oh come on."

"If it's any consolation to the groups, I had no idea this was happening either," As Mia gave an apologetic smile. 'Honestly, what the hell is up with this school. I showed up this morning for a sudden meeting with the principal just saying we're doing a scavenger hunt and to put our students in groups, but the weirder part was that Nishimura already had groups made and what the hell was with the warning to have things like this prepared ahead of time. This is not what I expected from an academy.' as she felt a headache.

Akihisa started sweating. 'If I remember last time I did horrible here, in the end the three of us did get very much. This is my second chance, time to make the most of it.' as he steeled himself.

"Alright guys, go out and do your best, you have until the school bell ring and be careful cause apparently everyone is getting graded on this." said Mia giving them a thumbs up. "What? How on earth do you grade a scavenger hunt?"

On the roof AKihisa's team were looking at the questions. "Each question has multiple choices and each question gives us coordinates." explained Yuuji.

"The first question gives us a y and the second the x and the third gives us our Z." said Hideyoshi. "So we'll have to answer all three to get the right answer."

Yuuji then noticed Akihisa was being quiet. "What's up with you, got an idea?"

'Several and the future me has done a few things like this.' as Akhisa began looking at the question. "Well Ms Shiono, said I should look at the world my way, in this case kind of like a videogame. In RPGs when I'm trying to track down a treasure, I eliminate the areas that are impossible. Like looking for a treasure that's hinted at in the fire zone, I wouldn't look in the ice area, and that logic can apply here." as he raised the question sheets. "Look, the coordinates are connected to each question, if we eliminate the impossible coordinates then we can slim down our search area."

Yuuji and Hideyoshi were dead silent and just stared at Akihisa. "Yuuji, did..did Akhisa just have a good idea?"

Yuuji blinked. "I think so, I heard a good idea, I'm still working on believing it came from Akihisa."

"HEY! I'm right here guys."

"Man the principle is really into this scavenger hunt," said Mia as she walked through the halls. "Oh well it gave me time to work on a game plan for being a teacher." As Mia walked through the hall she saw someone else walking with hazed eyes as if they were dead inside. "Yui!?"

Yui Takeuchi turned to Mia. "Oh hey there, how's it going?"

"I'm doing fine, what about you?"

Takeuchi slowly turned red. "Oh nothing," as she started moving suddenly. "I'm fit as a fiddle."

Mia blinked before smiling, 'Oh god this woman is adorable, she's still embarrassed about Akihisa.' as Mia started to come with ideas she remembered they were still on the clock. "Hey Yui, how about you join me for lunch."

"Uh okay." she said quickly changing the subject. "Wait, you haven't had lunch yet?"

"Nah, I'm afraid with the sudden scavenger hunt and me trying to play catch up, I was not able to eat lunch." explained Mia as they started walking down the hall. "How about you?"

"Oh I uh haven't eaten yet either." as Yui remembered how she just stared at her lunch thinking about the other day.

"Sweet then we can eat together. Let me just grab my lunch from my classroom." Before they could continue they stopped as they heard a noise coming from the girls locker room. They then watched as Himeji and Minami walked out carrying Kota. "Is he okay?"

Minami gave the teachers a smile. "Oh yeah, just some blood loss."

"Blood loss!?" said both teachers in confusion.

"Don't worry," as Kota slowly raised his head. "I got a kit back in the classroom."

Mia and Yui looked at each other for a moment. "Since we're heading in the same direction, we'll help you."

"Oh you don't have to." said Himeji.

"Well we're heading in that direction anyway." as they started heading towards the classroom.

As they got close they heard noise in the classroom. "Hey I found it." They heard two voices.

As they walked in they saw Hideyoshi holding a ticket and Akihisa was holding a basket. "Uh wait if you got the ticket then what's this?" he asked, holding the basket.

'Akihisa!' shouted Yui in her head.

"Oh um that's mine." said Himeji.

Akihisa felt a pit in his stomach. 'No, no, NOOO!' he mentally screamed.

Himeji walked up to him with pink sparkles all around her. "Um Akihisa do you like sweets?"

"Yeah." he squeaked.

Himeji was then surrounded by hearts. "Oh good cause I made some chiffon cakes." Akihisa took the cloth off the basket revealing the gorgeous looking cakes.

All the boys looked at it with complete horror with each of them trying to think of an excuse to get the hell out of there.

"Ooh that looks good," said Mia looking over Himeji's shoulder. "Can I have one?"

Yui raised an eyebrow. "Ms. Shiono, we shouldn't take food from our...students." she saw that Akihisa was making a slashing motion over his throat and shaking his head, confusing the teacher. "Huh?"

Yuuji looked at Akihisa who looked back at him, 'Akihisa I know you want to save them but if you do we'll.' Yuuji shook his head. 'No your right, what kind of man would I be if I let these women die.' Yuuji put a hand on the basket. "Sorry, first come first serve."

Mia raised an eyebrow as she looked at Akihisa's face. 'Am I missing something.' Mia stood up straight. "True but I have seniority."

Hideyoshi stepped in between them. "Yeah you don't want to ruin your diets."

Yui gave Hideyoshi an annoyed look. "Are you trying to tell us something young lady?"

Hideyoshi got a tick mark and opened his mouth, but before he could say anything Minami stepped forward. "Hideyoshi, just because you have a great bod with curves in all the right places doesn't mean you can rub it in our faces."

Hideyoshi got even more tick marks, he turned around grabbed the basket, put on the best smile. "Here you go, enjoy."

"HIDEYOSHI!" Yelled Akihisa.

"I'm sorry," Himeji looked on the verge of crying. "I didn't mean for my cooking to do this." As she turned and ran out of the classroom.

"Himeji!"

Minami turned to the boys. "See what you did, you made Himeji cry."

"Actually it's kind of my fault," said Mia as she took one of the cakes from the basket before handing it to Yui. "Here take them, we'll just tell her how delicious they were later." As she took a bite.

"Alright," as Minami took one. "But I'm going to go check on her." as turned to leave she took a bit of the cake."

"I guess I can take the last one." as Yui at the last one.

All the boys watched in absolute horror as some of them prayed for the girls. Mia was the first one to feel it, in an instant the world stopped moving as if time had stopped and in an instant she felt as if something had punched a whole threw her gut causing blood and vile to fill her lungs. As she fell to the ground she saw the reaper before her.

Minami didn't even reach the door before she felt a bomb in her stomach go off, her entire body felt as if it was being torn apart into tiny pieces of dust, her mind went blank as she collapsed to the ground, welcoming death's embrace.

Yui saw them both drop but it was too late as she felt what she could only describe as mold growing through her stomach and out of her body breaking it apart, melting her to the ground. She felt the cold grip of death.

"Ms. Shiono, Minami, Ms Takeuchi." yelled Akihisa. "What have we done?"

Yuuji nudged Hideyoshi and glanced at the door, receiving a nod. "Hey Akihisa, me and Hideyoshi are going to continue the scavenger hunt, good luck." As he ran out with Hideyoshi right behind him.

"Hey, wait!" yelled Akihisa as he looked around, noticing it was just him and the girls, 'Wait when did Kota leave?' Groans from the girls brought him out. "Oh right, are you guys okay?"

Mia slowly opened her eyes. "What the fuck was that?" As he helped her into a sitting position.

"Did I just drink acid? Asked Yui.

"Uh don't worry Ms. Takeuchi," As Akihisa helped her sit up next to Mia. "It will wear off in a few hours."

Akihisa went to Minami and rolled her over. She blinked for a moment before looking up at the boy. "Akihisa...what hit me, ooooh and what did I eat?" Akihisa helped her sit up. Minami then replayed the events that just happened in her head, before whipping her head to Akihisa. "You knew this was going to happen, you knew GFHHELP."

Akihisa quickly grabbed the class trash can and put it in front of Minami who hurled up a tiny bit of cake. "I'm sorry, I tried to warn you guys but.."

"That little…" Mia stopped as she put her hand over her mouth before swallowing. "Why didn't you say something?"

Akihisa looked at them sheepishly. "I just didn't want to be rude."

"Rude?"

"Um Akihisa," said Yui as she clenched her stomach. "Does Himeji not know her cooking is bad?"

"Not from what I can tell, no."

"What! How does she not know, her food is lethal?" asked Mia surprised.

"Well the other day when she gave me some of her homemade food, I asked if she had ever tasted her own food and apparently she never has, because according to her people who eat their own food get as fat as a cow." explained Akihisa receiving looks of disbelief from the teachers. "At the end of the day me and the guys didn't know how to break it to Himeji so we decided to keep quiet about it until we come up with something."

"Something, I'll give that girl something." said Mia as she slowly stood up. "I get that girl some cooking classes before she kills someone, but that can wait."

"Right," said Yui as she got up. "I believe we owe that girl a piece of our mind."

Akihisa blinked for a moment. "Wait, you mean Hideyoshi?"

Minami began to growl as a red aura enveloped her. "Hideyoshi, is going to pay for this."

Akihisa stood between them and the door. "Wait, you guys need to hold up for a moment, before you vomit." All three girls puff their cheeks as they feel their stomach's turn upside down.

"Hey we found another one," said Hideyoshi as he showed the ticket ball they had found in the storage room. "This is working better than I expected."

"Yeah no kidding," said Yuuji as he checked a few more answers. "Just by eliminating the ones that are impossible we can easily slim the search area down."

"Are you two serious," they both turned to see Akihisa patting and slightly red. "I've been looking everywhere for you guys."

"Sorry about that, man." said Yuuji. "So how are Minami and the teachers?"

"Sick and pissed." as Akihisa gave Hideyoshi a look. "And they have their eyes sent on you."

"They were asking for it." pointed out Hideyoshi. "But we should worry about that later."

"Hideyoshi is right," said Yuuji. "Thanks to your idea and the fact that we discovered duds, we still have a chance at several of the prizes."

Akihisa tilted his head. "Duds?"

"Yeah, we found a few already," as he showed the try again tickets. "It should have been obvious from the start, just look at how many questions there are, too many to split the prizes. So after double checking the questions I discovered that there were some with the same coordinates for answers."

"Wait, there's questions that have the same answers?" as Akihisa looked at the test sheet.

"Yep and from what I can tell, all the doubles lead to duds." said Yuuji before marking several answers. "So if we search the areas where only one of the answers are, we might be able to find more tickets."

Akihisa thought it over. "Alright then, let's divide and conquer."

Hideyoshi gave him a quizzical look. "Divide and conquer?"

"Yeah," as Akihisa showed the sheets. "If the three of us take one of the areas then we can cover more ground. Just like an RTS."

"RTS?"

Yuuji just laughed. "A Real Time Strategy. You thinking of life as a videogame is really something." as he slammed his fist into his palm. "Okay let's do this."

(One montage later)

The three of them met on the roof exhausted but excited. "I can't believe it, we actually got so many tickets." As Yuuji looked over their hail.

"We got a total of eight tickets," said Hideyoshi. "Ranging from stationary equipment to tickets to that couples amusement park."

"Nine actually," said Akihisa as he got up holding an answer sheet. 'If I remember right.' as he stepped on a loose tile, he pulled it up revealing one more ticket ball. "Alright nine in total."

"Whoa," as Hideyoshi clapped. "Way to go Akihisa."

"Holy shit," yelped Yuuji as he looked over the prize sheet. "With that we actually have almost a third of the prizes."

"WE CAN NOT ALLOW THAT!" The boys turned to see Yuuko, Shouko and Aiko standing on the other side of the roof.

Akihisa looked over at Hideyoshi to make sure he wasn't crazy. "Yuuko! Why are you guys here and why are you in a dress?"

Yuuko got an annoyed look. "One of my brothers dumb clubmates followed me around all day yelling at me try it on cause he thought I was Hideyoshi." she said with anger.

"So that's why he was confused I didn't have the dress." said Hideyoshi

"Well, if it makes you feel any better, I think you look great in that dress." said Akihisa, giving her a smile and thumbs up.

The complement caused Yuuko to turn red. "Are you flirting with me?"

"Oh my god, is he asking you out?" asked Aiko with stars in her eyes, causing Yuuko to turn even more red.

Akihisas waved his arms. "What? I was just giving her a compliment."

Yuuji leaned towards hideyoshi. "Your sister doesn't take compliments well does she?"

"No she does not." replied Hideyoshi.

"ENOUGH!" yelled Yuuko. "We are here to battle. You class F dropouts have more tickets than anyone else and as class A students we cannot let that stand." before turning to a teacher. "Mr. Fukuhara."

"I approved this summoner test war." as Mr. Fukuhara raised his arm, summoning a field.

"SUMMON!" said the three girls as they summoned their avatars.

"Looks like we have no choice guys," said Yuuji before striking a pose. "Summon!"

Akihisa and Hideyoshi nodded. "Summon!"

The two teams face off, the girls combine power was over a thousand while the boys' were just shy of two hundred.

"Oh no!" shouted Akihisa

"This isn't good." said Yuuji trying to think of a way out.

Hideyoshi sighed, "Looks like remedial classes for us."

"Ba bye, boys." said Aiko

"I will not hold back." stated Shouko.

"Alright let's get them!" shouted Yuuko, ready to fight.

"YOU!" the six of them stopped and turned to see Ms Takeuchi and Ms. Shiono behind the girls.

"Ms. Takeuchi, Ms. Shiono?" said Yuuko before noticing their very angry looks. "Is... uh something the matter?"

Mia put a hand on Yuuko's shoulder. "Tricking us like that is a terrible joke."

Yui got close. "If you think you can get away with pranking a teacher, think again."

Yuuko's eyes swirled in confusion. "HUH? What are you talking about?"

Aiko stepped up to defend her friend. "Yuuko's been with us all day and she isn't the type to play pranks."

Shouko nodded. "Yes, I think there has been some sort of misunderstanding."

Before they could continue they heard crashing and squeaking noises. The three turned to see that Akihisa, Hideyoshi and Yuuji avatars were attacking their avatar's. "OUR AVATARS!"

It was too late, Akihisa delivered a finishing quick slash to Yuuko's avatar. Hideyoshi's avatar slashed Aiko's avatar with its nagnata and Yuuji gave Shouko's avatar a one, two combo finishing her off.

"THOSE YOU LOSE A SUMMONING TEST WARS, RECEIVE REMEDIAL CLASS!" yelled Iron man as he appeared to grab the girls.

"Wait, wait, wait," said Yuuko quickly. "We were distracted, they attacked us while our backs were turned."

"So, paying attention is required for passing a test and for battle." stated Iron man. "It's your own fault for not focusing."

"WHAT!" as Yuuko gave him a look of disbelief before crying, "But I've never had remedial classes before."

"Well, no arguing with that." said Aiko with a small sad laugh.

Shouko didn't say anything but looked like someone kicked her puppy.

"One moment, please." said Mr Fukuhara getting slight hope from the girls before ripping it away. "The prize for this fight was all the tickets from the losing team. Before you take them, please hand over all of your tickets."

Akihisa then watched as Iron man took the girls away for remedial classes. Yuuji quickly counted the tickets from the girls. "Holy shit, with the seven tickets they gave us we have a total of sixteen prizes out of the thirty to begin with."

"Are you serious?" Asked a very excited Akihisa.

"Yep." DING DONG "And there's the bell!"

"We actually did it." said Hideyoshi with a slight disbelief. "How in the world did we do it?"

Mia stepped forward. "You guys had the best strategy. Most kids from the top classes tried to solve all the questions first, others just waited until someone else had a prize and fought for it."

"Really, then why didn't no one else try to fight us until now?" asked Akihisa.

"We're class F." stated Yuuji. "Chances are no one thought we'd have any prizes. We acted first, narrowing down the possibilities and snatching them up first before they even finished answering all the questions."

"That's quite true," said Yui. "Sometimes in life you have to act first before overthinking it. I think the other students would agree, right Ms. Shimada?"

The boys flinched as they felt an angry beast behind them. "We need to have a word with you three."

They gulped before Yuuji yelled "RUN!" as the three sprinted away with Minami hot on their tails.

In her office the principal laughed as she watched through the cameras. "Those three used street smarts to win, that might be what's needed for the next project." as she held up one of the bracelets.

"Are you sure ma'am?" asked Ms Takahashi. "While they did find the most prizes, they barely answered any of the questions on the answer sheet."

"That's the point," said the Principal. "As educators we are responsible with educating our students but that does not mean we shouldn't teach them other ways of succeeding, these boys got the most prizes because they thought outside the box and used street smarts. Even the idiot used his teacher's idea of thinking in a different way." The screen switched to Minami chasing the boys down the halls. "Slowly but surely they're learning."
