Chapter 19
Alice immediately rushed to my side, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Are you okay, Bella?" she asked, concern etched on her face.
I shook my head, feeling overwhelmed by the recent events. "I don't know, Alice. I just... feel so helpless. The Black family has always been there for me, and now something weird is going on, and I can't do anything about it."
Alice squeezed my shoulder gently. "You're doing all you can, Bella... We'll figure out what's going on together."
I looked up at Alice, grateful for her kind words. "Thank you, Alice."
We walked back to Firerain. I was deep in thought, analyzing the newfound hostility in Jacob's voice.
He must've discovered my feelings for Alice somehow, and shunned me for it. My relationship with Alice was taboo. The realization hurt. I couldn't think of anything Jacob could do that would change the way I felt about him. I loved him unconditionally, and I so foolishly thought he felt the same about me.
I was wrong...
I couldn't wrap my brain around it... how did he find out so quickly? And why did he hate the Cullens so much?
"Alice?" I asked her as I helped her into the wagon. "Why are they saying the Cullens aren't like 'us'?"
Alice paused then, suddenly nervous.
"It's ridiculous, right?" I asked, but got no response from Alice. "Alice?"
"I don't know where they heard that." Alice pondered.
But I got the feeling that she was not being entirely truthful. Was there a secret the Cullens were hiding?
Firerain made his way through the dense forest, his hooves muffled by the thick layer of leaves and pine needles on the ground. The morning air was crisp and cool, and the sunlight filtered through the trees in dappled patterns.
As we rode, the tensions began to fade, and Alice chattered away, telling me about her life in Alaska and her visions of the future. I listened intently, grateful for the distraction from the strange encounter with the Blacks.
We walked in silence for a while. I couldn't help but start dwelling on Jacob again. Alice sensed my distress and put a comforting arm around my shoulder. "It's not your fault, Bella. You can't change their situation."
I nodded, grateful for Alice's words. I knew she was right, but it didn't ease the guilt and frustration I felt.
As we continued our journey, we came across a small clearing. In the middle of the clearing was the crystal-clear waters of Heaven's Tear Lake. I felt drawn to it and instructed Firerain to stop. Firerain huffed and paused at waters that marked the beginning of Centre Court.
I walked towards the water's edge. Alice followed behind me, and we sat down on the grassy bank, feet dangling in the cool water.
"It's so pretty here," Alice said, "It's different from Alaska. Much sunnier."
The peacefulness of the pond seeped into us, and we sat in silence, watching the ripples on the surface of the water. It was a reminder that there was still beauty and tranquility in the world, even amidst the chaos and hardships.
Alice leaned into me, her blue gaze was thoughtful.
Her body pressed against mine, radiating an inferno of warmth that engulfed me. It was a familiar sensation, one that always set my senses ablaze. I wondered if my body would always react this way to Alice.
I wrapped my good arm around her and placed a kiss on the top of her head. She smiled a perfect, white smile.
Our lips met, and our kiss began slowly, matching the tranquil mood of Heaven's Tear Lake. However, it soon intensified, and there was a hunger inside me that threatened to burst out. The fiery passion ignited inside me, consuming everything in its path.
Alice chuckled and gently pushed me away. I frowned. I wasn't used to Alice pushing me away. "We should get going, Bella. The day is waning, and we still have a lot to do."
I nodded, feeling satisfied to see the hunger mirrored in Alice's eyes. As we made our way to Centre Court, I couldn't help but feel grateful for Alice's unwavering support.
The market was bustling with activity. Merchants shouted over each other and bickered over prices.
I lead us to the west side of the market, where the Centre Court officials have always let me set up shop.
It was hard to miss the attention Alice commanded for such a small person. People stopped to look at her, and Alice beamed back at them, as if every person at the market was her best friend.
She drew people to her like a magnet, and we were selling eggs before I even had a chance to park Firerain and the wagon.
The sun had barely reached the far side of the western sky before the lot of eggs were gone.
"I can't believe we sold every egg." I said to Alice as we walked away from the market stalls. "Your feminine charm really made a difference today. We made more money than we usually do." I smiled at her, grateful for her help.
Alice grinned back at me, her eyes sparkling. "Well, I'm glad I could help, Bella. Sometimes a little bit of charm goes a long way."
We walked in silence for a few moments, enjoying the warm sun on our faces and the sound of the busy market around us.
"Do you think we could sell even more if we added some of your fashion advice to our stall?" I asked Alice, half-jokingly.
Alice's eyes lit up at the suggestion. "Oh, I think we could definitely make our stand the most stylish one at the market. We could add some cute baskets and maybe even some floral arrangements to display the eggs."
I smiled at her enthusiasm.
As we continued to walk, I couldn't help but feel grateful for Alice's ability to make even the most mundane tasks fun and exciting.
I pulled Alice through the market, needing to get supplies for the farm, as well as treats for Firerain, and for Mike Newton for being so helpful around the farm during her absences.
By the time we were finished, the sun had begun to set. We rushed back to Firerain like giggling schoolgirls.
