History: Clint Barton was the youngest child of Harold and Edith Barton. Harold was a butcher in Waverly, Iowa. Often drunk, business was often poor. Harold and Edith would both die in a drunk driving accident. Both Barney and Clint were put in a foster home. They subsequently ran away and joined the Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonders. Barney would be regulated to clean up whereas Clint would be taken by the two men who would have the greatest impact on his life: The Swordsman and Trick Shot.

With Trick Shot, Clint learned the bow and arrow. Clint was an eager student but Trick Shot's penchant for drinking caused a rift between mentor and student. Trick Shot was later fired by the Carnival. Clint gravitated to the Swordsman and the pair got along pretty well, at least until he found his teacher robbing the till.

A fight ensured, ending with the Swordsman fleeing the carnival and Clint left with a broken leg. After that, Clint swore no more heroes. His wounds healed and Clint devoted himself to being the best marksman alive. He drifted from circus to circus, finally ending up in Coney Island as 'Hawkeye'.

Seeing Iron Man in action one day, Clint was inspired to become a masked hero. Developing his arrows and a costume, his first night in action led to him being accused of theft and running into the Black Widow. The pair worked well but Hawkeye later quit and vowed to go straight.

He joined the Avengers after most of the original members left and had a variety of adventures. After some years, Hawkeye left the team for good to join and briefly lead the West Coast expansion. He eventually retired the name to Kate Bishop.
