History: Thomas and Ethelda Curry were famed explorers. On one expedition they discovered the ruins of an ancient city deep within the waters of the Atlantic. Thomas believed this was the remains of Atlantis, or at least a colony. Rebuilding some of the buildings, the Currys made it their home.

Studying the ancient records, they passed the knowledge onto their daughter Athena, who was born among the ruins of the ancient city. For some reason, Athena was born denser than a normal human. Thomas taught her to live underwater and Ethelda taught her how to use her powers (see powers). It was theorized that being exposed to something in the ruins may have resulted in her powers, but nothing was ever proven.

When her parents died, Athena carried on their work but eventually joined the surface world. Shunning the surface world in general, she rarely came ashore. She did have many adventures at sea, including several encounters with Nazi submarines and pirates during World War II. She joined the All-Star Squadron at the request of a few superheroes, but rarely attended their meetings and formerly resigned following the end of the war.

After the war she retired back to her home and continued to patrol the seas. Her current whereabouts are unknown. She apparently has known no connection to the monarch of Atlantis (see Aquawoman II) or the wandering adventurer (see Aquawoman III), although via unrevealed means she is aware of them.

Powers: Aquawoman's body is far denser than a normal human, enabling her to survive the awesome pressures of the deep and extreme temperatures. This density gives her superhuman strength on land. She possesses a fair amount of skill in hand-to-hand combat, with training mostly in boxing and wrestling. Her top speed underwater is 100 mph. She was also born with the ability to communicate with sea life. She could talk to seemingly anything connected to the ocean, from plankton to birds (seagulls) but if she could talk to humans it was never demonstrated or documented.
