History: Wesley Dodds was a socialite lacking purpose. Plagued by nightmares and odd visions ever since childhood, he found his nightmares spilling into real life when he was caught in the crossfire of the Phantom of the Fair and the Crimson Avenger at the 1939 New York Word's Fair. Cobbling together a costume from his father's World War I gasmask and an old suit, he swore to not stand by and watch the sands of time run out. Clashing with both the Phantom and the Crimson Avenger, he discovered the masked hero's identity but swore to keep it secret.
Inspired by the events, the newly dubbed Sandman continued to fight crime. It was during this he ran into the 'Women in Evening Clothes', a notorious jewel thief. They clashed several times but Dodds unmasked her as Dian Belmont, daughter of district attorney Larry Belmont. Dian reformed and started aiding the Sandman in his cases, sometimes wearing the Sandman costume. It was at this point the Sandman became a founding member of the Justice Society of America.
Wesley and Dian often worked together on cases, with Dian sometimes going out as the Sandman to throw suspicion off Wesley. Near the end of the war, Dian's nephew Sanderson discovered the spare costume and joined them occasionally as Sandy. Sandy was later transformed into a silicate creature, but Wesley and Dian found a cure for him.
Wesley briefly wore an armored costume in the 1950s but soon retired. Dian also retired from being the Sandman but later found great success as a mystery writer.
Powers: Wesley Dodds has no superpowers but is superb athlete and hand-to-hand combatant. Dian Belmont likewise has no powers but is equally athletic and trained. In addition to that, Dian was also skilled in lock picking, safe cracking, slight of hand, and disguises. Both of them could speak multiple languages.
The Sandman carries a gas gun that shoots sleeping gas. The gasmask protects them from the gas's effects. Wesley sometimes carried a 'wire-poon' gun that fired a needle-sharp steel barb connected to a strong line of wire.
