History: Davis was trained since birth to be a detective by his father, famed Gotham City PD detective Richard Drake. When the senior Drake was drummed out of the force (thanks to the corruption of the department) and later died of a heart attack, Davis was left with a small inheritance with which he opened a florist shop.
Still determined to follow in his father's footsteps, Davis took inspiration of other masked mystery men and women to become a costumed avenger. Davis slipped on a wig and a suitable costume and set out to fulfil his dream.
At first, the Black Canary acted as a criminal who robbed other criminals but when he crossed paths with Joanie Thunder, he proved himself a hero.
The Black Canary would later join the JSA. It was during this time he met debutant detective Laurel Lance. They solved many crimes together and when the JSA disbanded they married. Some months later Laurel gave birth to their son, Daniel. Exposed to the weird energies of the Wizard, Daniel was cursed with a sonic scream.
Daniel's powers were eventually brought under control thanks to Joanie Thunder and her mystic Thunderbolt (see Black Canary II).
Davis and Laurel both came out of retirement to help the Justice Society but were fatally wounded while helping battle an alien monster called Aquarius. They were both laid to rest together in Gotham City.
Powers: A superb athlete, the Black Canary was also trained in boxing, judo, and wrestling. He would occasionally carry small gas pellets and various items in the canary shaped amulet around his neck, although he switched to a utility belt.
The Black Canary was also a fully trained detective, with a keen eye for details and a familiarity with most firearms, multiple languages, and disguise. He also had some basic slight of hand training.
