Chapter One
The weather was always her favorite this time of year. The trees were showing their true colours and shedding their leaves. The harvest was in full swing.
But this year was different. This year the Forbes family were uprooting their lives and moving to a new village to begin again after her father determined no man was good enough for his daughter in their current village. Because of course, at the age of 17, Caroline must begin looking for a husband. She scoffed at the thought. She didn't care to have a husband. To dote on him. Follow him unconditionally. She was what her parents liked to call a free spirit and they cursed the gods for that fact everytime Caroline spoke out of turn. Which was often.
Caroline hated that they were to move. This is where she was born, where she grew up playing in the grain fields and washing clothes in the stream. Safe to say she wasn't happy. And she didn't feel the need to keep that to herself.
"Father, I do not understand! Why must be move to a new village? Our village is perfectly fine. I know everyone here and they know me. What could another village possibly have to offer us?" Caroline asked her father while they packed their belongings in the cart.
William Forbes was not a man to coddle. Not his wife, and not his only daughter. It was never said , but Caroline knew that part of the reason her father was so harsh with her was because he wanted a boy, an heir. Instead he got Caroline. An outspoken girl with a mind of her own.
"it is not your duty to question why, Caroline. I say we must move and we must move. No questions. That is the end of it." He said, coming out of the hut with the last of their meager belongings.
"but father-"
"Caroline Forbes I said that is the end of it! There are no suitable husband's here for you. They've all watched you grow up into the foolish temperamental woman you are and no one would trade even a goat to marry you. If you must know why we have to move, then you are to blame. We must look elsewhere for a husband for you to marry and mind for, and you will obey." He had walked closer to her during his speech and by the end he was right in her face.
Caroline looked to the ground. She knew that face. She knew if she continued on with her questioning there was a lashing in her very near future. "Yes father," she murmured.
Her father scoffed, "stupid girl," he whispered as he turned away.
Caroline quickly wiped away the tear that had fallen. Was it so hard for him to just love her like a father should a daughter? But after year upon year of lashings and beatings, she had given up hope.
"You shouldn't question your father, sweetheart. Nothing good can ever come of it. Just mind your words and keep your head down. The village is 2 days ride from here. We've sent word ahead and the chief of the village is expecting us. We should not leave Chief Mikaelson waiting," Caroline's mother said.
"Elizabeth, enough talk. She will not listen, stubborn chit. Into the cart, the horses are ready."
Caroline took one last look at her village and climbed into the cart.
