Chapter 136

"So three weeks huh ?"

"We can hope Claire, ideally three weeks would be great, I'm hoping to make it two."

They were on the porch for an end of summer wrap up and planning session. Amy, Sarah, Violette, Georgie, Katie, Nick, Claire and Bryce. It was a large group and ordinarily there would have been more but there was a surgery going on. Also, it would have been at the jumping facility but for Amy not wanting to move past the porch. After their short trip North to attend Brin's Eastman recital Amy decided to not go further than the compound if she could help it.

"You'll talk to the boys Amy ?"

"Tell them to stop by the house anytime and I'll talk to them. So rehab and training staff for a stipend and the apartment ?"

"Works for us." Nick said standing "They've really helped out and both have a way with the horses, I wish they jumped, rehab and training staff works though."

They were talking about Jason and Paul, the gay vet school student couple that had approached Amy in May for summer jobs in exchange to a place to stay. Amy had agreed and after post semester trips home they were the first to take one of the three new apartments at the jumping facility. Nick, Claire and family took the larger two bedroom, with them in a smaller one bedroom. Claire adopted them immediately on her arrival.

"Both of them applied for one of the three new rotations, Ty's ducklings, but politics being what it is that'll wait a semester I guess. Anxious learners though are important, I'll talk to them."

"Politics ?"

"Politics Georgie, they work here already and giving away two of three slots to them would raise eyebrows. Loren suggested one in the next rotation, we'll go with that if they're still interested."

"Well we've got some paperwork to finish up." Sarah said getting up as well. She was followed by Claire, Bryce, Katie and Violette. Nick and Claire were heading to their horses while the rest accompanied them as far as the barn and continued on to rescue and medical.

"So Georgie, what do you have planned for the rest of the day ?"

"Nothing until this surgery is done or Wyatt gets home, got something in mind ?"

"Nope. I'm sitting here with my feet up, you're welcome to keep me company until my appointment."

"Ty taking you ?"

"Of course, down to the wire Georgie."

"Ready for all this ?"

"Beyond ready, I feel life an overripe fruit."

"Where are the kids or Betty for that matter ? I haven't seen them all morning ?"

"Harvesting, it's all hands on deck, Sally picked them up early this morning. The kids are picking and Betty's either helping in the kitchen or manning the stand."

Georgie nodded "Guess it's that time of the year."

Amy leaned back and closed her eyes.

It was about 20 minutes later when Georgie who decided it was easiest to just stay and wait where she was and read looked up to see Ty walking towards the porch and raising his hand to wave to her. When he got closer she raised her finger to her mouth as Amy had fallen asleep.

At about the same time that Ty reached the porch steps they both heard and saw Erma's Suburban heading down the road. It was the truck noise that woke Amy who opened her eyes and blinked.

"Hey Ames."

"Well hello husband, how long have I been napping ?"

"I just got here."

"Less than an hour Amy."

"You didn't have to stay Georgie."

"I was reading, it's fine."

"Hey Sis, did I wake you ?"

Amy smiled "It's about fifty-fifty these days Erma, what's up ?"

"We have three cows laying down ready to pop, August can use a hand and I've got Kimmie and the stand open."

"I can come Erma."

"No Ty, you just got out of a five hour surgery, let me just get changed and grab my bag Erma and I'll come."

"Thanks Georgie, should I wait ?"

"No, you go back and I'll grab a horse and just head over."

"Thanks so much Georgie, I'll text Auggie and let him know."

"Don't give it another thought Erma."

Erma nodded and glanced at the back seat where Kimmie was completely occupied with her toys. "Later Sis" she called back getting in and waving before backing out.

Amy sat up and took Ty's hand "how about I put up a pot of coffee for you, make myself a cup of tea and you join me on the porch after a rinse ?"

"Sounds good, be back in ten."

"Help me up before you go please."

Ty smiled and waited for Amy to stand and get her balance before holding the door for her and following her inside. She was on the phone with Sally when Ty carried out his fresh cup of coffee and sat down next to her.

"I'll ask Ty and text Sal, thanks for the invite and not too late please."

"Ask Ty what ?"

"Sally's got spaghetti going for a cast of thousands, do we want to join or enjoy some time alone."

Ty sat back and put his feet up to share the small ottoman Amy was using and sighed "How about The Rook ?"

Amy smiled "I can do The Rook, I'll text Sally and let her know we're going out after the appointment."

She opened her eyes again when Wyatt turned into the ranch on his bike and rode down to the garage. She was still holding Ty's hand and glanced over to see that he was engrossed in a paper he was reading on his iPad.

He smiled and turned to her when she gently squeezed his hand.

"Wyatt wake you ?"

She smiled and nodded "what time is it ?"

"I was going to wake you in a few minutes, we have to leave soon."

"Amy, Ty." Wyatt said walking up.

"Hey Wyatt, Georgie's on calf watch with August."

"I heard, one just went, momma and baby doing fine, I'm going to change and ride Wallace over. Georgie wants her new Neuro book and I don't want her to ride home alone if this goes into night. You guys good ?"

"We are, Amy's been napping, OB appointment coming up and then dinner at The Rook."

"Surgery went well ?"

"It did, you need anything, want to grab some snacks ?"

"I'm good, Erma's apparently getting together a basket to ride out, how's the picking party ?"

"Word is they're doing well and Sally's getting dinner ready for the lot." Amy said holding out her hand so she could stand. Ty reached out and helped her.

"Ames ?"

"Bathroom and change my love, it's almost time. Wish everyone our best Wyatt."

"I sure will Amy."

He smiled, waved and turned away past the porch and headed to the family barn while Ty followed Amy into the house where they dropped their cups in the dishwasher and headed upstairs.

"Should I change ?" Ty asked sitting down in his chair while Amy headed into the bathroom.

"I don't see why, the Rook isn't fancy, I'm just changing into a going out dress."

"What's the difference between what you were wearing and a going out dress."

"Nothing much really, house dresses are, less substantial, a bit looser."

He looked up and watched Amy walk across the room and into their large closet. "Need help Ames ?"

She was quiet for a minute and came out in a dark burgundy mid calf half sleeved dress while buttoning up the front. "nope, front buttons and tie."

She took a second to sit and brush out her hair, refresh her lipstick before standing and putting out her hand. "Come on Ty, let's get me poked and prodded."

She stopped to get a hat on her way out and took a second to look at herself and groan. "I can't imagine that people don't think I'm past due at this point."

Ty smiled "I'm pretty sure people don't think that Ames, everyone's different."

"I walk like a duck Ty." She said as they started across the lawn to the garages.

He laughed "Ok, I'll give you that, you've got a waddle but it's normal Ames."

They pulled into the OB lot right behind a Subaru Outback and parked right next to it as it drove into a spot marked "Reserved for Medical Staff." Amy waited for Ty and to help her out as was their norm these days and watched Miriam her OB get out and pop the trunk for her briefcase.

"Hey Amy, how are you feeing ?" She asked as Ty held her hand while she stood.

"I feel like Jabba the Hutt."

"How's getting around ?"

Amy laughed "I don't, I park myself on the porch after breakfast and people come by when they need something, basically like Jabba does. You're not here just for me are you ?"

"Actually I am but really to relieve Daniel for a couple of hours, he's on call tonight. You just have the last appointment. How's everyone at home ?"

"Everyone's fine." She said following Miriam through the door Ty held open for them.

Amy popped her hat on the coat rack and Miriam turned for a second to talk to Annie at the desk before turning back. "I'm gonna settle and check messages Amy, see you soon."

Amy turned to Annie who smiled "Sit Amy, I'll let Frances know you're here. Need water ?"

"Nope just finished a mug of tea, I'm good."

"Amy ?" Frances said popping her head out of the examination room.

"Ready !" Amy answered putting out her hand for Ty as she rose.

They both helped her onto the table "How have you been feeling Amy, ready to go ?"

"I can wait the two weeks Frances."

"How's getting around ?" She asked while spreading the warmed gel across Amy's belly.

Amy laughed "I try not to, I'm perfectly content in one spot for as long as I can."

The heartbeats were loud for a second until Frances lowered the volume.

"Not much room in there, how are the kicks ?"

"Still there, not as pronounced though."

"That's perfectly normal considering, they're looking good though, want a peek before I start measuring ?"

"Sure, I'd love one."

Frances turned the screen to the anxious parents who smiled immediately seeing their sons scrunched together, a jumble of legs and arms.

"Wow." Amy said "like no real room at all is there ?"

"Nope, I'd say you were ready any time."

They stopped for a second when there was a soft knock "it's Miriam" they heard before the door opened and she slipped in with a smile seeing the screen.

"It's really no wonder they come out best of friends is there, how's her fluid level ?"

"Just about to check boss, give me a sec."

They all watched Frances hit a few keys and then check a chart alongside her. "Normal for momos according to the chart and I'd say you'll get mid to high 5's on weight based on the two weeks coming, it'll be close but that's real good weight for twins. They look great."

"Still low though." Ty added.

"Normal for twins though Ty." Miriam answered "that's what the neonatal staff is for, we're right on target Ty, length estimate Frances ?"

"I couldn't even hazard a guess but they look fine and baby A is definitely coming first and down low" she said removing the wand a second before she reached for the paper towels to start cleaning Amy up.

Miriam smiled at them both "go pee, get Annie her sample and I'll meet you next door for the internal and we'll talk."

This time Amy was helped onto the exam table by Ty and Miriam who then took both her temperature and blood pressure, nodded and then helped Amy spin on the table so that she could lay down and get her legs up into the stirrups. Miriam took a second to get gloves on, "deep breath Amy."

A moment later Miriam closed her eyes and Amy squeezed Ty's hand for a second before releasing and letting her breath go slowly.

Miriam smiled pulling off her glove "All good, let's change rooms one last time and talk."

"How's the back pain Amy ?"

"Pretty steady, I'm used to it and it's better when I'm sitting."

"Feeling the need to urinate ?"

"Standing it's always on my mind, sitting or laying is better."

"Ok, you're about 35 weeks, here's where we're at, you're slightly effaced, I'm betting you'll go into labor this week, you're not dilating yet but baby A's head has dropped and is laying right on your mucous plug and when it goes so will your water, almost guaranteed."

"So what does that mean ?"

"It means I'm going to send you home to do exactly what you've been doing, sitting or laying. Monday is Labor Day, no pun intended and Tuesday the kids start school and I know that's important to you."

"Ok, and ?" Amy asked.

"Wednesday morning, if you last that long, we're checking you in."

"Uhm, Ok I guess. Uhm, how long ?"

Miriam chuckled "I don't think long at all, you're right at the cusp of 36 weeks, like I said slightly effaced and baby A is in the chute, ready or not Amy, this is going to happen sooner than later."

She then hit a button on her desk "Annie, a moment please ?"

A few second later the door opened and Annie poked her head in "Blood sugar's spot on."

"Book Amy into a nice birthing suite for Wednesday at 10 please, get neonatal what they need and let Elizabeth know please."

"How exciting." Annie said "anything else ?"

"Not that I can think of, thanks."

Annie nodded and smiled at Amy "I'll have instructions when you come out Amy."

"Uhm, thanks Annie."

"You Ok Ames ?" Ty asked.

"Yeah, I guess, I mean, I don't know what I expected but yup, I guess I'm Ok, you ?"

Ty laughed and looked at Miriam who was smiling "I don't think we're being given a choice here Ames, it's sort of ready or not."

"That it is." Miriam said "Questions ? Concerns ? Anything ?"

Amy looked at Ty who shrugged.

"Ok then, I will see you again on Wednesday or before, keep the bag in the trunk and I'd park at the house rather than the garage. No dawdling you two, your water breaks, go. Annie will make sure you have everything you need. Don't stress, we're looking real good."

"We Ok for a last dinner out Miriam, we were heading to The Rook for dinner from here."

Smiling again "Seriously Ty, no promises but I think you'll be fine."

"Ames ?"

"I'm game and hungry, let's talk to Annie."

Miriam got up to hug them both "See you two real soon and enjoy your dinner."

Annie came out to them and sat herself next to the couple so that Amy wouldn't have to stand and handed them a folder.

"This is just general stuff and a maternity and parking pass for security though as professors I doubt you'll need it. If you've broken your water we advise you to ask for a wheelchair up, if your checking in normally you have the option, maternity is on the third floor."

"We took a tour with Elizabeth."

"Great, now this number stapled to the top is the number you call if the time comes before Wednesday, it's our emergency number and you'll answer two questions, who's your doctor and your name and then tell them you're on the way. They'll call us, the hospital and Elizabeth. Anything at all other than it's time just call here or for you Miriam I guess. Questions for now ?"

Amy and Ty looked at each other and simultaneously said "nope."

Annie smiled "Well, I guess that's it then, good luck you two, I doubt I'll see you until your first checkup. Oh, I expect pictures."

"I'll send them to Miriam Annie, thanks for everything."

"My pleasure Amy, I have one of those unusually happy kind of jobs."

"Yes you do." Amy said putting on her hat.

Ty snapped in his seatbelt after settling Amy and blew out a long soft breath. "Have to say I did not expect that."

"Uhm me either but there it is I guess." Amy said belting herself in as well. "Well, the boy's rooms are done, we have most everything we need I guess ready or not here we come, let's eat, go home and spread the news."

Amy didn't even pick up the menu when Ty asked what she wanted "Grilled dates, fried chicken, duck fat fries and cheesecake in a jar."

"Sounds good to me."

After dinner as Ty pulled through the open Pegasus gates Amy asked him to drive around to the back of the family barn so that she could have a visit with Spartan and Belle. He pulled up to a spot between Georgie's and Mallory's truck and came around to help her out. Amy smiled when she looked up and saw both Mallory and Georgie sitting in one of the picture window seats in Georgie's apartment and waved at them getting smiles and waves back from both before she walked into the barn.

Amy and Ty were standing at Spartan and Isabelle's stalls when they were joined by Georgie and Mallory.

"How was the appointment Amy ? Any news ?"

"Well plenty actually, first how are the cows ?"

"Heifers and cows doing great, they ended up coming one after the other, Jake's over there now giving August a hand, he should be home any minute. You ?"

"Me, I'm due any day now and if not checking into the hospital on Wednesday."

"Guess my free ride's coming to an end."

"Guess so Mal, how's Jake fitting in ?"

"He absolutely loves it and there's cows next door. He's even taken to the alpaca who are adorable by the way."

Amy smiled "they really are. Anyway, that's enough standing for me. Look in on these two for me Georgie. Come on Ty, Betty and the kids should be back soon, let's go spread the news."

Once they had settled on the porch it wasn't long before Amy got a text from Betty that they were heading back. The family waved as Betty's truck passed the house to the back lot where she parked and a couple minutes before Jackson's charge to the porch which made them both smile.

"Hey mom, hey dad." He cried making his way over to hug Amy and get scooped up on Ty's lap.

"How was your day Jackson ?"

"Oh great, we picked a lot, me and April picked mostly cherry tomatoes, the girls picked corn, bushels and bushels."

"There's more for tomorrow, how was the doctor ?"

"Both Ty's surgery and the doctor went fine. Let's wait until we're all together."

The girls were first carrying bottles of water for themselves and one for Amy. "Can we get you something pappa ?"

"I'm fine Charlie, thank you."

"How was the OB mom ?"

"Fine, we're waiting for Gran." JT offered.

"You Ok girls ?" Amy asked.

"Need showers for sure." Maddie answered before taking a swig of water. "We did real good today."

Charlie nodded "Bobby said we did better than he thought we would and they've got some bumper crops this year, 90 bushels of beefsteak tomatoes so far and they've got almost as many green ones still going."

Betty nodded and handed Ty a mug of fresh coffee before sipping her own "Sally and Tom are so proud of him. She just went on and on, We canned 60 liter jars of Italian tomatoes and at least that many pickles."

Charlie laughed "They'll be gone by Monday."

Amy smiled "Both farms, Erma and Sally, really never have to keep stock."

Ty nodded "August was telling me that they don't actually have to sell cheese at the stand, the restaurants and specialty shops would take it all but she thinks it's not neighborly.

Amy smiled "she does love manning the stand. It's hard work but I don't think either her or Sal would trade it for anything and the restaurants and markets would take most of the Carmichael crops as well."

"I doubt you would trade what you do for anything either mom."

"Truer words have never been spoken Mad."

"So Ty, I hear the surgery went well, and the Potters have three healthy heifers with Georgie's help, how was the doctor ?"

"Did ya get pictures ?"

"I actually don't think we took any with us." Amy pondered out loud.

"Nope" Ty agreed "sorry Buddy."

"It's Ok I guess."

"And ?"

"And Gran, you all actually, I'm pretty much days away and if I don't go into labor by Wednesday I'm getting admitted."

"Wow." The girls said simultaneously

"Ok, well, first," Betty said "not sure why we ordered another two just like you two and how didn't I count that as a possibility this week, but we're ready."

"Glad you feel ready Gran." Amy said smiling.

"You'll be fine sweetheart, many babies have come into this world."

"I'd hug you Betty but I've got one move left and it involves stairs."

"Jackson, you Ok ?"

"I don't like hospitals."

"Well sweet boy, nobody really likes hospitals but in this case it makes sure that the best people are nearby if or when I need them or if the babies need them."

"I guess that part's good. What about the speech ?"

"Mom might not get a speech JT" Maddie started "like Gran said millions of babies are born every year, mom will be fine."

"Ok just saying, bad things can happen in hospitals is all."

"C'mon bro." Charlie said taking her turn "we should be thinking good things not worrying about what could be and then there'll be babies. We should get to showering, more picking tomorrow."

"That's a good idea, let's call it a night." Ty agreed letting Jackson down "C'mon hugs and kisses and we'll stop in for goodnights."

Amy came out of the bathroom about a half an hour later. She was wearing a pajama set and slippers and found Ty sitting in lounge pants and a t-shirt studying his iPad. He looked up and smiled "Ok Ames ?"

"Yup." She said sitting down in her make-up chair and reaching for her brush.

"Should I check on the kids ?"

"Let me just brush out and I'll waddle along with you, I want to check on JT."

Ty walked over when she put her brush down and held out his arm to help her stand then together they walked through the door and down the hall to Jackson's room and knocked softly.

"Come." Charlie answered.

They found a twin sitting on either side of Jackson's bed. In turn with Maddie first then Charlie each stood facing them.

"What's going on ?" Amy asked.

"Grainger meeting."

She nodded "kicking us out Mad?"

"Nope, you get to stay."

"Excellent then, anything we should know about ?"

"Nope, family meeting Sunday."

"Can we get a hint ?" Ty asked.

"Sorry Pappa, it's a surprise, all good though, no worries." Maddie said coming towards them for hugs and kisses followed by Charlie.

Amy watched them leave and she sat down alongside him. She leaned a little and lay her palm gently on his cheek.

"You Ok sweetheart ?"

"Scared a little."

Amy nodded "Me too but I have a good feeling about this."

"Mom's gonna be fine Jackson."

"Not scared ?"

Ty smiled "not sure scared is the right word but I sure don't know what that word is though I'm pretty sure it's mixed with excited."

"Yeah, me too."

"Ok so, we're all a little scared or whatever," she said smiling up at Ty for a second "and excited. Time for bed sweet boy, tomorrow's another day."

She looked at him for a second and attempted to lean over for a kiss and giggled "you better come get this one JT."

Jackson smiled and leaned up for his kiss before plopping back down. "Night mom."

"Good night sweetheart."

Ty walked over to the other side and leaned over for his kiss and hug "Goodnight Jackson."

"Night dad."

Ty watched from his side of the bed as Amy tried to settle comfortably with the four pillows she was up to using. When she finally sighed and seemed too be laying quietly he asked if she was Ok.

"Honestly Ty this needs to be over."

"It's coming to an end soon Ames, a few more days and we'll have our two boys."

"In the NICU."

"I'm incredibly thankful for that." Ty said reaching over to gently touch her side "I really am."

"I know and I am too. Mallory said they'll move in next door when we're in the hospital even though the boys won't be home for a couple weeks. She wants to be available to help me and get me back and forth depending on what comes up around here."

"Any idea what this meeting on Sunday's about ?"

Amy laughed "You know, I don't have a clue, I'll hit Betty up tomorrow."

"Think she knows ?"

Amy shrugged "No idea though generally she's kept in the loop on Grainger issues."

"Think she'll talk ?"

"That'll depend on what exactly the issue is and whether she needs a nod."

"What kind of nod ?"

"Spending an excessive amount of money, trading JT to the circus for a baby elephant, adopting a pet, that kind of thing."

Ty laughed "Got it."

"Good night my love."

"Night Ames."

Friday morning, once the kids and Betty left to the Carmichael's farm and Ty left to medical and later to the vet school, Amy settled on the porch with three local newspapers, her iPad and a mug of tea. A few minutes later Mallory walked over from the barn and took up a seat next to her.

"What's up Mal, plans for today ?"

"Today I'm your shadow Amy."

"My shadow ?"

"You know in case you break your water or go into labor and nobody's around, so I'm around."

"Well then get yourself a cup of coffee and get me a muffin please."

Mallory returned and put two muffins and her coffee down on a small wooden table before sitting.

Amy smiled at her "thanks Mal, whose idea ?"

"Ty called me this morning based on a talk with Jackson I think."

"Jackson, my sweet boy, he's been through so much pain and hurt, I should have realized that just last night's talk wouldn't be enough."

"My being here isn't much to keep him happy."

"Of course not Mallory, you're always welcome to hang, you're pretty much my little sister."

"How's Ty doing with all of this ?"

"The babies or Pegasus ?"

"Both I guess."

"Well, I think he's good with both. The babies, like me I guess, it's not like I've done this part before, it's exciting, a bit scary and these days, for me at least a bit nerve racking. I think he's pretty settled with the ranch part and the father part though. He's still a bit unsure of the father part but I don't think he questions his place in either. How about you guys, feeling settled ?"

"We just talked about this the other night, how, you know, being with family really does make a huge difference in comfort levels. I mean, we could have gone back to Alberta anytime, even after our folks sold off their farms, and I'm sure Jack would have found a way to give us a home at Heartland but it just didn't feel right. Texas was fine but never really welcoming because we'd never actually be Texans, it's just one of those places where it takes generations to be a real part of it."

"And here ?"

"Here is feeling real good right now. Jake loves it and with you, Ty, Georgie, Wyatt, Betty and your kids who are amazing, I feel right at home and I get to be Auntie Mal which is like a bonus."

"We should order from Gorger's, a Cuban sandwich."

Mallory laughed "Way to change the subject, I'll pick something when we're ready."

"And bacon cheddar fries."

"Of course, otherwise there's no point in going on."

"Ok smartypants food has gotten to be very important to me lately, it keeps me centered. We should invite Erma."

It was Erma arriving with lunch that ultimately woke Amy who had been napping after falling asleep reading the local news. Mallory helped her up and watched her head inside to wash up.

Mallory got down on the floor to keep Kimmie occupied while Erma unpacked the food she had picked up from Gorger's.

"Mal we really appreciate Jake's help with the herd the other day."

"No worries Erma, he's literally worked with 5000 head herds almost full time in Texas."

"He was telling August, how's our girl doing ?"

"Good, maybe a little nervous and anxious mixed together. She napped for awhile, that should help."

"The nap definitely helped, did you stop at the Carmichaels' ?" Amy asked settling back in her chair.

"I stopped at the stand and talked to Betty, Sal was off into the fields with the wagon, they should be mostly done today, they need a day off. It's been a good harvest all around."

"You guys work hard for it."

Amy smiled at Kimmie who stood up and walked over to her lifting her arms. "Come on you." She said lifting the little girl onto her lap slowly.

"Baby." Kimmie said pointing to Amy's belly.

"Two babies sweetie." Amy said correcting her.

"Two babies." The little girl repeated.

Erma smiled at the interaction while she sat on a blanket she laid out on the porch floor cutting up a small part of her sandwich and adding some fries to the plate.

"Kimmie, come eat." Erma said reaching for her daughter who decided to slide off Amy's lap instead. She sat next to Erma and reached for a fry.

Erma got up and sat next to Amy as they unwrapped their sandwiches.

"How bad Sis ?"

"Nights take forever, if I sleep two hours straight it's a miracle."

"Napping definitely helps." Erma said taking a bite of her sandwich.

Amy chewed and nodded "It's funny that it was never a thing for me and now it's become a pretty big part of life."

"It goes back to normal once they come and the hourly stuff fades. Nowadays Kimmie going down for a nap is just time to get more stuff done."

"Or some alone time with August ?" Mallory added with a smile.

"Definitely true seasonally, in the spring and summer not so much, aside from him usually off doing something, he's usually pretty dirty by nap time. She's almost over it anyway, some days she doesn't nap at all."

"And on those days ?"

Erma laughed "On those days I tote her around or she toddles behind, she loves the farm and actually occupies herself pretty well. Auggie takes her a lot, sometimes April sits with her, Brin and the girls are always happy to step in, it's a community effort."

"I'd volunteer to help out but I have a funny feeling I'm going to have my hands full soon enough."

"I appreciate that Mallory and yes I do think you'll have your hands full and sleeping when you don't."

"Momma pee."

"Good girl Kimmie, come on sweetie, let's find the potty."

Mallory watched them through the screen door "She's young for potty training."

"Kimmie's two and a bit, I guess that's a bit young. She's a smart girl."

"So Erma's family has been here for over 200 years ?"

"August as well, their families traveled here together before the revolution. They're actually the first couple in the families to marry. April and Kimmie are ninth generation. Sally's family came in the 1840's."

"All done !" Erma announced opening the door for Kimmie who came out smiling.

"Did you pee in the potty Kimmie ?" Amy asked.

She smiled and nodded.

"What a big girl you are ! Come on, give me a hug."

Kimmie smiled and held up her hands as Amy wrapped her arms around the little girl.

"We've got to head back, Auggie's been watching the stand and I bet he's had it, Friday's are busy." Erma said starting to clean up around the porch.

"Go Erma, I'll do that." Mallory said standing and taking the bag Erma was filling.

"Ok then, thanks Mal." She said leaning over Amy for a hug. "You take it easy and call with anything and I'll be here sis."

"Thanks Erma and thanks for the company and picking up lunch."

"No problem, it was nice to get away and see you. Come on Kimmie, let's get back to the farm sweetheart."

"Bye Amy" Kimmie said waving.

"Good bye sweetie."

"So you and Erma ?" Mallory asked as Erma pulled away and waved.

"We're pretty close, Erma and August are the best of people. You couldn't ask for better neighbors and friends."

They spent the day together reading the papers and chatting and at one point took a slow walk through the barns. Later in the afternoon people started coming home including the kids and Betty having picked the majority of the ripe vegetables. Bobby and Sally would walk the rows Saturday and take stock of the rest. Betty had come home with a large laundry basket full of the lesser of the pretty picks which was fine for them. Along with over 2 dozen fresh eggs and a bottle of fresh blueberry jam breakfast and probably lunch for tomorrow was set. The kids were getting changed and going over the last of their summer assignments.

Ty was last coming home along with Georgie. She'd spend the next six months as one of Bert and Ty's TA's along with being Ty's second. Katie switched over to TA for Acky while Barb was giving Georgie a hand with the ortho department and also working with Richard taking a turn with a Chiropractic specialty and possibly spending some time in Acupuncture. Katie promised to help out where and when she could.

Georgie stopped at the porch steps "I'm just gonna get cleaned up and grab Wyatt, you two have a good day ?"

Amy smiled "We're great Georgie, go on and we'll visit in a bit."

Ty came up and kissed Mallory on the cheek before walking past to sit down next to Amy and lean over for a quick kiss. "How was your day Ames ?" He asked taking her hand.

"It was nice spending the day with Mal, Lou's coming tomorrow, that'll be nice."

Amy didn't really want a crowd at the house before the boys were home. At this rate they'd probably be two weeks in the NICU and she'd be spending her days there for the most part. She felt better with Lou coming for a couple weeks, she wanted her sister and Katie would be fine with Lisa and her grandpa.

Ty squeezed her hand, "I'm going to get washed up and check on the kids, I'll be back soon."

The kids and Betty who had come home about a half hour before Ty had shown up were all down and on the porch before Ty whom she assumed had decided to shower.

They gathered around her for hugs and kisses that they bypassed having come straight back from a day of picking. Amy scooped up Jackson next to her while the girls found a place along the rails and Betty sat next to Mallory.

"So picking went well, anything else I need to know ?" Amy asked of the group.

"Nothing more that everybody's sending you their good thoughts." Maddie answered.

"How you feeling mom ?"

"I'm doing pretty well JT."

"Babies moving about mom ?"

"Enough to let me know their fine Charlie, how's Bobby ?"

"A lot less worried but a bunch more picking coming and he's got school next week."

"Sally'll spot pick and she'll get help if she needs it. Dinner Gran ?"

"Take-out, you pick."

Amy smiled "Fine with me, Chinese ?"

"Awesome !" Jackson announced.

"Awesome Chinese it is then." Betty said as Ty came out, looked at the group and smiled "We got rid of all the horses ?"

Maddie laughed "No pappa we still have them just visiting with mom for a bit but we did arrange for the hands to deal with our herd today because we weren't sure about the picking."

"They still need exercise and there's a package in the medical building that needs to go to the nature center and I'm sure some mail."

"Bundle on the table." Betty added nodding.

"Then we should saddle up." Charlie said standing "come on guys, we can pony three and ride three."

"Help me up please Ty, it's bathroom time." Amy asked holding out her hand.

Ty smiled and with one arm around her he held her outstretched arm as she got up and once standing immediately doubled over in pain.

"Sit Ames."

"Standing is better, help me to the rail."

Once there she began her breathing exercise leaning forward a little both hands now on the rail.

"Mom ?"

"Just a Braxton Hicks Jackson." She gasped as it slowly passed and she stood up.

"Miriam said they'd come more often, I'm Ok everyone." She said taking a deep breath.

"Come on Amy, I'll walk with you." Mallory said standing.

"Thanks Mal, you can all go get on with the horses, I'm fine."

All three kids stood and watched.

Amy smiled "Go, shoo, I'm fine, perfectly normal event."

She watched the kids head off while Mal walked her and held open the screen door before following her through her hand on Amy's back reassuringly. "Take it slow Amy."

"I'm good Mal, thanks for this."

Betty smiled and looked at Ty shaking her head a little "Yeah, this is how it's going to be I guess."

Ty smiled back "Countdown mode I guess Gran, it's nerve wracking."

"She's doing great Ty, it won't be much longer."

"Hours seem like days Betty."

"She sleeping ?"

"On and off, 24 hour cycle."

"How about you son ?"

"I guess, mostly, she moves around a lot and then I feel guilty when I wake up and she's not sleeping."

"You'll survive ?"

Ty laughed "Yeah, I hear it's good training for when they're here."

"Nothing will prepare you for that but there'll be a lot of help and love."

"I'm glad Mal's here and she's looking forward to Lou coming tomorrow."

They both looked up when Mal held the door for Amy and she came out again. Ty stood and helped her back into her chair.

"Can I get you something Ames ?"

"I can wait for dinner, have we decided on dishes ?"

"Let's do that, I'll get the menu, where ?"

"How about Spicy Asian, that's always good." Amy answered.

"Works for me." Betty said heading into the house.

There were two more Braxton Hicks episodes for the day, once after dinner and once just before the kids headed off to bed. They watched holding their collective breaths as Amy worked through them.

"This is absolutely nerve wracking." Maddie muttered before leading the other two to bed after hugs.

"For all of us Mad but I'm fine, they'll come when they come." Amy said reassuringly.

"Try to sleep mom." Charlie murmured with her hug.

"I'm good Charlie, the naps really help."

She though Jackson's hug was especially clingy which made her smile.

"I'm good JT, lots of love and help."

"Love you mom."

"I love you too my sweet boy, so much, brothers soon."

"I can't wait."

Amy smiled "I think that's going around, I'll see you in the morning."

The next morning Amy was first downstairs, fixed herself a cup of tea, started the coffee pot for others while it steeped and walked out to sit on the porch, mug in hand a few minutes later. She had left Ty sleeping and hoped he took advantage of the peace to rest a little longer. She assumed Betty and at least Jackson would be along soon if not Mallory, her guardian.

She saw Erma's truck pull in and smiled as she parked.

"Hey sis, I figured you'd be here."

"You're out pretty early Erma."

"Couple early morning cheese drops in town, chefs start early, you still alone ?"

"So far, I put up a pot for the others, go grab a cup of coffee."

"I was thinking." Erma said sitting and taking a sip "that maybe you can keep me company at the stand today, give everyone here a break in their worrying."

"That actually sounds wonderful Erma, can you wait until someone else is up ?"

"Auggie has the kids until I get back, I've got time, Lou's coming right ?"

"This afternoon, I think she lands around 2."

"Plenty of time then, I bet you can't wait."

"It'll be nice to have her here."

"How's it been, getting any rest at all ?"

"It comes and goes, 3 Braxton Hicks yesterday, not too bad, lots of naps."

"We'll set up the chaise for you under the canopy, nice and comfy."

They sat chit chatting until they finished their drinks and while Erma grabbed the mugs int the kitchen she stopped as Betty and Ty followed Jackson down the stairs.

"Hey Erma, is April here ?"

"Sorry sweetie, she's home, I guess getting ready for chores."

"Good morning Erma, I didn't expect to see you this morning, problem ?" Betty asked.

"Nope." She answered kissing both her and Ty on the cheek. "I came to steal Amy away to keep me company at the stand for a few hours and get her out of everyones way."

"She not in the way Erma."

"I know Ty, maybe a bad choice of words, how's give her a change of scenery sound ?"

"I guess if that's what she wants it's fine with me. Let me talk to her for a few minutes." He said it while filling his mug and heading outside onto the porch where she was sitting with JT and chatting.

"Mom said we should go fishing until rounds."

"She did huh ?"

"Yup, what do you think ?"

"Let me have my coffee and talk to mom JT, go get breakfast and you still have chores."

"Before we start I'll be fine with Erma and it'll feel good to be somewhere else for awhile."

"Fine but fishing though ?"

"Why not, you could get back in 10 minutes at a canter."

"I don't know Ames."

"Well I'll leave you to decide but it would be good for JT, he's too young to spend his days worrying. It'll take his mind off all of this for a couple hours and maybe you can relax a little too ?"

"I'll relax when the babies are here."

Betty and Erma had come out at that moment and Betty laughed "No you won't, Amy's right Ty, go spend some time with JT before he's no longer getting your full attention."

"Thank you Betty." Amy said agreeably.

"Jackson." Ty called out "Get your chores done and we'll go fishing for a couple hours."

"Then it's settled." Erma said "Come on Sis, get your boots and hat."

"Let me give you the 800 number Erma."

Erma laughed "Both Auggie and I know it by heart Ty, don't worry, and don't you want me to call you first ?"

"Yes Erma, please call me first."

"There you go." Erma said smiling.

"Ty, who's picking up Lou ?"

"Georgie and Wyatt, they'll call when they have her."

"Well that's it then, help me up and kiss me goodbye please, fresh tomatoes and gruyere for breakfast."

"Sally dropped off fresh breads."

"Ok then, brie and honey on warm fresh bread and fresh tomatoes for breakfast. Let me pee Erma, it'll save me a trip at your house."

"Lost it !" Ty said reeling back his line which seemed to be coming back without it's rig and fly.

"We should go back." Jackson said "You're worried about mom and you can't fish that way."

"I'm sorry JT."

"Hey, it's Ok, not like we didn't catch any."

"Thanks, it's not easy keeping my mind off your mom."

"She's with Erma, don't worry about it."

"I definitely trust Erma, sorry JT, I can't explain it, it's just a feeling."

"I get it, let's go back, you have rounds soon anyway."

"I appreciate your understanding Jackson."

Amy reached for her phone as she watched Merlin coming towards her down the path from Pegasus.

"Hey, how's it going ?"

"Going fine, just sitting with Meg and Erma, you ?"

"About to start rounds, Jackson's on his way to you."

"Jackson's already here, how was fishing ?"

"We stopped early, we each caught a couple but I couldn't keep my mind on the fish so we cut it short."

"Hey mom !"

"Hello Jackson, I'm on the phone with your dad, you staying ?"

"Gonna surprise April and then a trail ride I guess."

"Sounds like fun, I think she's out picking with August, put Merlin in a paddock and make sure there's water please."

Amy listened to Ty for a minute and smiled "go do rounds, I'm fine and I'll come home when Lou gets here."

"Ty freaking out ?"

"Not sure if freaking out is a good description Meg, more anxious and worried than anything I guess. Me too by the way."

"Not sure if any woman days away isn't a bit anxious or worried Amy." Erma said and then turned and smiled at a young couple standing with several blocks of cheese in their hands that asked a question. "Blue and Roquefort are slightly different, blue is traditionally cows milk and Roquefort would be sheep or goat, these are goat." After a moment and two more questions "Roquefort is a bit creamier. They both age about 6 months."

It was Saturday and a pretty busy morning at the stand with customers made up of a good mix of locals and visitors to the area. Erma sold a varying selection of cheeses, pickles, creams, scones, cookies and honey she made, veggies and cider August grew or made and a wall of local fare that she sold for others including pies and breads made by Sally and Bobby, as well as local jams and jellies from neighbors. Amy and Meg smiled at all comers and made chit chat when it came up. She had answered "any day and twins or twin boys" at least a few dozen times, all wished her well.

Some neighbors including people she knew from town or local schools and the university sat and chatted for bit as well. Greater Ithaca was relatively small compared to the larger cities but it was spread out once you left the city itself and Amy was always surprised that she actually knew so many of the locals.

Erma loved the stand and kept it open whenever she could, a few hours here or there but especially over the weekend. She also loved putting out samples to entice her visitors which today included Amy who nibbled constantly on whatever was cut up.

The kids rode off with two sandwiches, two apples and some cookies they picked when they stopped at the stand to say goodbye. Amy reminded Jackson that she was headed back to the ranch around 3 to meet Lou and to remember to be home with Merlin taken care of by 5 to get ready for dinner.

She had received a text from Lou when she boarded in Calgary and one from Georgie when she and Wyatt left to pick her up. Meg dropped her off at the ranch when the text announcing Lou was on her way and then headed home to accompany two cello professors who were performing at a faculty function in a few weeks.

Amy joined Betty who she found sitting on the porch knitting and watching the twins who were exercising and working rescues in the round pens.

"How's your day been going Gran ?

"Good, early farmer's market with Georgie and Mallory and this. Mallory and Jake went off for a ride when Georgie left to get Lou. Your day ?"

"Fattening and relaxed."

"She does like cutting things up." Betty said laughing. "How's business ?"

"They do well at that stand, couple thousand easy today."

"They both do, Sally and Erma I mean."

"And they both love standing out there and meeting everyone, chatting, visiting."

"Proud of their accomplishments."

"As they should be."

"So Gran, any idea of what this Grainger family meeting tomorrow's about ?"

"Not really but it involves Tom at least."

"What does at least mean ?"

"The kids are handling it Amy, they asked me to step back, that's all I know. Family meeting at 11 followed by lunch by Pavel."

"Pavel ?"

Betty laughed "let it be Amy, I just don't know."

"Stay down Amy, I'll come to you !" Lou shouted 20 minutes later when Wyatt pulled up at the house. The girls had taken what was apparently their last charges into the barn and disappeared from sight about a half hour before. Ty had returned a few minutes before and was washing up and changing from a day with patients. Mallory and Jake had also returned and were changing as well.

Lou sat down and had her arm around Amy after her hug and kisses. Georgie was out a minute later with water for all.

"Any day huh ?"

"Sometimes it feels like any minute Lou, how's everyone in Alberta ?"

"Anxious and maybe not so happy they're not here but I think they understand."

"I'm sorry about it but I think it's for the best all around."

"No, no, I think everybody gets it, some are a bit louder about it, that's all."

"Dad ?"

"Yeah dad for sure but Grandpa's not too thrilled either."

"It's a crowd Lou and we come with a built in crowd here."

"I get it and you shouldn't worry about it."

The day went on as they did these days with the world revolving around Amy on the porch. Kids, visitors and ranch folk, stopped, visited and went on with their days. Weekend or not this was a working ranch with hundreds of creatures requiring care. Betty had set up two large pots of stew for dinner, the smells of which wafted around the house. Sally dropped off fresh bread and pies for dessert and spend some time with Amy as she missed out on the earlier bull session. Neither Betty, Mallory or Lou left her side for any appreciable time and were there to help her with anything she needed. Ty spent all his available time nearby as well leaving only for rounds or any consults that came up. Bert would take over when Amy went to the hospital and was given the weekend to spend with Meg as his time would be limited once the changeover happened.

Amy made her one trip up the stairs after they had desserts on the porch and went straight to bed where once again she tossed and turned for a good part of the night. She did her best to not disturb Ty which seemed to work somewhat. She was up before him and with Mallory's reassuring hand made her was down in the morning after showering and dressing for the day. He was down soon after for rounds and had come back to shower and change shortly before the morning took a strange turn.

Things started to get weird when Pavel and Yvette drove up with their little catering truck. After a few minutes talking to Amy and Betty and nods to the rest the two started pulling the ever present picnic tables on the lawn together which Yvette started getting ready for an obvious buffet.

"Betty ?" Amy asked watching.

Betty shrugged "I think we're just going to have to go with this one Amy, at least I don't have to worry about lunch."

Amy shrugged and then smiled as cars started pulling up to the house, the first being Bert and Meg followed by Charlie with Chuck and Robin, Trever and Stef and Bryce and family. Georgie, Wyatt, Jake and Mallory were next walking from the barn.

It was weirder when the girls hit the porch in dresses followed by Jackson in Ariats and a button down. They said nothing but took their places on chairs and benches around Amy making chit chat and seemingly not noticing what was going.

Next came John and Trish when it really got weird as they came in the truck without their colors followed by the Caldwells, Potters and Carmichaels who apparently abandoned their farms and stands for the time being and finally Judge Newsome and his wife.

"Ok, what's going on ?" Amy asked looking at the twins.

"Patience mom, all we be made clear soon enough." Maddie said looking around "Just waiting for Pappa."

"I told him to dress nice for lunch." JT said from the side where he was sitting with April and Cars.

"Amy, what the hell is going on ?" Ty said coming through the door.

"Hey Buddy."

"I'm sorry, hi John, Ames ?"

"I have no idea but the judge is here so maybe a wedding or they're kicking us out."

"Pappa, you look wonderful, let me just check if Tom's ready and we can start." Maddie said heading through the door.

"Start what Mad ?" He called after her only to get a wave in return. "Betty ?"

"I actually think it's come to me Ty, it should be over soon."

"Care to share ?" Amy asked.

"If I'm right then no."

"We're ready, if you'll all join us in the library." Maddie announced popping out for a second. "Charlie, Jackson, come on."

"You come with us Pappa." Charlie said taking his arm.

"Charlie, what's going on ?"

"Hush, it'll be completely painless, come on."

Amy and the rest followed the kids in and to the library where there were several chairs set up where the kids led her, Betty and Lou to sit by her side.

"I don't get a seat ?"

"No silly, you're the guest of honor Pappa." Maddie said.

"Would somebody please tell me what's going on ?"

"Ok, well, we're adopting you dad" JT said "there are papers and the judge and witnesses."

"You're adopting me ?"

"You know, each other, unless you don't want to, then it's just lunch."

"Uhm, Ames, did you know about this ?"

"Not until a second ago, baby brain, I think Betty figured it out once Judge Newsome got here."

"Ok, now that the cat's out of the bag." Tom began "Sabrina are you recording ?"

"And going live to Alberta and Vancouver actually. Lisa ?"

"We're here Brin with Jack, Casey, Tim and Katie."

"Wade, Lily ?"

"We're good Sabrina." Wade answered.

"Er, Brin, what's going on ?"

"Adoptions all around GG. Go ahead Tom."

"Ok, so the kids have decided, that is if it's Ok with Ty and Amy that henceforth and forever they will be legally Madelyn Grainger Fleming-Borden, Charlotte Grainger Fleming-Borden and Jackson Timothy Grainger Fleming-Borden and that Tyler James Borden will be their legal father as opposed to guardian with all the hoopla that goes along with that."

"You good with that mom ?" Charlotte asked.

Amy was full out crying at this point and responded with a thumbs up.

"Gran ? Ok ?"

"Perfectly Ok, Charlie." Betty said sobbing as well.

"Pappa, all good ?"

Ty had tears in his eyes as did many of the guests who were either watery eyed or out and out sniffling. "All good Charlie."

"Ok, let's get these signed." Tom said going from Amy to the kids and finally to Ty.

"The kids have asked for John and Trish to officially witness but we do have a sheet for all to sign as witnesses and Steph, if you'll notarize the signatures I'll turn this over to Judge Newsome."

"There are very few things a Judge does that seems to be always right. Companies flounder, partnerships dissolve, marriages break up, families fight over inheritances but adoptions are pretty much forever. So far I have never been asked to break one and having been a New York State Superior Court Justice going on 30 years I'd say that means something. Nine years ago I joined these kids to Amy and now we're adding Ty to the mix and having spoken to the children they couldn't be happier and seeing the looks on everyone's faces here I can see that you are all approving. So without further ado and by affixing my signature and seal to this document I do hereby certify the adoption of these three beautiful children to Tyler James Borden. Congratulations to you all."

Ty had unconsciously taken Jackson's hand after they had both signed and listened to the judge together and looked down when he felt JT squeeze his. He looked down again a moment later and smiled at his now officially beaming son and leaned over to pick him up for a hug.

"Well you got me now." Jackson whispered "I love you dad."

"And I love you son."

A second later each of the girls hugged him and kissed his cheek, each with there own whispered words of love. The last thing he really remembered before being swamped with hugs and handshakes was him kissing a beaming Amy who hadn't yet stopped crying.
