Chapter 9: Shadowed Pasts and Reunions
Rogue brushes her teeth in her bathroom as she got ready for bed, feeling tired after a draining day of school. She spits her toothpaste out of her mouth into the sink, dabbing her mouth with a towel and walks towards her bed after shutting off her bathroom light. Turning her table side lamp off, Rogue gets under her bedsheets as she let sleep take over. The dream started off grey, rainclouds pouring down raindrops as the night was quiet. The scene changes to woods, a castle coming into view as it continued to rain, a woman's voice can be heard screaming throughout the halls. "You're a monster! Don't touch him! How could you do this to me?!"
A woman runs out in the woods, holding something small in her arms as she did, another figure floating after her while one teleported in and out of view, shadows masking them. The woman reaches a bridge, turning back to see the two figures gaining on her, while she turns to look down at the small, blue, sleeping baby wrapped up in blankets. She frowns. "I have no life if you're in my way and I can't keep you safe." She says as she drops the baby, water rushing below.
A puff of smoke appears before the baby could drop into the water, causing Rogue to wake up screaming and crying. Her door flies open, several people appearing as Rogue grips her head with sweat dripping down her brow and her breathing quickened. "Rogue?! You okay?" Kitty asks worriedly.
"Chère? Can y' 'ear us? Y' okay?" Remy asks softly and concerned.
"Vat happened?!" Kurt questions.
Rogue's eyes were squeezed shut as she tries to calm down, a sniff coming from her. She takes a deep breath, and wipes her face, her eyes finally opening as she sees the concerned looks on the other's faces. "Ah'm fahne…" She says softly. "Ah just had a naghtmare."
"A nightmare? You sure?" Kitty asks, sitting on her bed.
Rogue nods as she pulls her knees up. "It felt so real though… there was a castle and a woman yellin' and.. that poor babeh… But what was weird was that Ah think ah know who it maght've been?"
"Vhy do you say zat?" Kurt asks.
Rogue looks at Kurt, then her eyes widen slightly. "They had yer powers, Kurt."
"Vat?" Kurt looks at her confused. "My powers? I vasn't in your dream vas I?"
"No it wasn't you…" Rogue's brows furrow, the other three sharing glances. "You were the babeh…"
"Maybe y' should talk t' de Professor in de mornin' 'bout it." Remy suggests.
"It's alright, Remy. Rogue, Kurt see me in my office please." The Professors projected voice appears, Remy slightly jumping.
"'M neve' gettin' used t' dat." Remy shakes his head.
Rogue and Kurt walk to the Professors office, Kitty going back to bed, but Remy lingering a bit, then he finally goes back to his room. "Would you mind me taking a look into your mind about this dream, Rogue?" The Professor asks after she sat down.
"Soah." Rogue nods as Kurt watches anxiously.
The Professor closes his eyes as he places his hands on the side of Rogue's head, going through her nightmare she had. The images flash in his head, then he opens his eyes and peers at Rogue. "Interesting. Perhaps we can further discuss this tomorrow after you get home from school. For now, I would advise you both to go back to bed."
The two nod, exiting the study with their minds wondering what it could mean. The Professor places his hands together, deep in his own thoughts, having a feeling he would have to speak with a certain someone about what just happened. "I vonder vat he saw…" Kurt ponders as they walk down the hall.
"Kurt, it maght have somethin' ta do with you." Rogue says, her voice soft.
"Me? But vhy?" Kurt looks at her puzzled. "I still don't understand how I am involved in all of zis."
"Ah'm soah tha Professah will explain more tamarraw. Fer now let's get back ta bed." Rogue puts her gloved hand on his shoulder in comfort.
Kurt nods, the two saying goodnight to each other and going back to bed. The X-kids go to school the following morning, Rogue yawning as she had a bit of trouble falling asleep last night. She dozes off a bit as Jean drove some of them to school, her head lulling onto Remy's shoulder whom looks down at her in surprise. He smiles a bit as she had dozed off on him, but she must've realized she had fallen asleep on something solid and warm as she jolts upward and looks away from him in embarrassment. Remy gives a light chuckle as he plays with some of his cards.
The Professor had made a separate visit to the school that morning after everyone arrived, stopping in the Principles office. "I know what you have done, Mystique." He says. "You have to tell him. He deserves to know who his true parents are."
"I don't have the slightest clue of who you are talking about." Mystique guised as Principle Darkholme glares down at Charles.
"I think you know exactly who I am referring to. He is your son, Raven. It isn't fair to keep this information from him. Does his father even know?" Charles questions, pushing Mystique's buttons a bit.
Mystique flinches at the mention of the father, her eye twitching slightly. The Professor noticed he hit a nerve, seeing her regain her composure as she tries to be cordial. "Get out Xavier." She mumbles under her breath, looking down. "Now. Before I throw you out."
The Professor starts to head out, then he looks behind him. "He turned out to be a great young man, Raven."
With that he left, leaving Mystique tearing up as she turns her back to the door, a hand covering her mouth as she gazes out the window from the corner of her eye. Sniffing and wiping her eyes, she hears a small poof sound, freezing in place. "Hello, Raven. It's
been a while, my love." A deep, silky voice says.
"What do you want?" She hisses out, not turning her back.
"I hear you run this school as Principle but I also heard of some other interesting information, such as our son going here." The man says, remaining in the shadows, perched on a chair. "Have you told him yet? What you have done?"
Mystique clenches her fists, her true form coming out as she shifted back, her gaze still to the floor. "No. I may never tell him."
She felt his presence behind her, the hair on the back of her neck sticking up as his red hands went to her shoulders and he leant in to whisper in her ear. "If you don't tell him, I will."
Mystique goes to whip around, ready to attack, but he poofs away. Her eyes were wide as she scanned the room, putting her hands on her desk as she does.
Meanwhile, the red figure watches Kurt from a distance in the shadows as he talks to Remy, Scott, Warren and Piotr. His eyes narrow as he watches, then he was gone as fast as he had came. Rogue sees Kurt across the quad as she walks out the back door, tugging her backpack onto her shoulder. "Kurt," She starts as she approaches the group. "C'mon, we gotta go see tha Professah."
"Oh ja!" Kurt perks up. "See you all at ze mansion!"
He salutes the group as he and Rogue head off to a hiding spot to teleport to the institute grounds. "Was everything all good last night?" Warren asks, looking specifically at Remy.
"'M sure it was okay. Rogue jus' had a nightmare 's all." Remy shrugs. "'Er, Nightcrawlah and de Professah went t' talk 'bout it. Me an' de chat went back t' bed."
Mystique pushes up her glasses in her principal guise, glaring out the window, then turns to Pietro. "I need you to put this into Nightcrawler's chambers. He'll go there first before seeing the Professor. Be quick, in and out. Got it?"
"I don't get why I have to do it but okay I guess." Pietro begrudgingly takes it, then zooms out.
He was in the mansion in no time, zooming in and placing the note on Kurt's bed, then quickly leaves. The Professor picked up on his powers, however, wondering what he was doing coming in and leaving just as quick. Rogue and Kurt enter the institute foyer when Pietro zooms out, making them believe a huge gust of wind blew in when they opened the door. "Ah'll meet ya in the Professah's study, kay?" Rogue says as she starts to head upstairs.
Kurt nods, then teleports to his room to put away his belongings, but pauses when he notices a note on his bed. He picks it up and reads it, puzzled. "If you vant to know about ze truth, meet at ze abandoned construction site near Bayville High…. Vat?"
Kurt's brows furrow, wondering what he should do. Deciding he wanted to know more, he leaves the note, then teleports back to the school out of sight. Rogue knocks on his door, calling out to him. "Kurt?" She gasps softly when she noticed he wasn't there.
The others had arrived home just a short second ago, Rogue stepping into his room to look around. She notices the note on his bed, her brow raised as she picks it up. "Snoopin' round Kurt's t'ings?" Remy's voice asks as he leans against the door in a playful manner.
Rogue spins around, facing him. "Someone gave this ta Kurt. He was sapposed ta meet meh in tha Professah's office so we can discuss what happened last naght."
Remy raises a brow, standing up straight. "Den we should tell de Professah Kurt is missin'."
She nods in agreement, the two heading out of the room and heading for Xavier's office. Meanwhile, Kurt walks across the street and down an alleyway that took him to the meeting spot he was following. He looks around cautiously, his X-men uniform on and his true self showing as he had turned off his image inducer once he entered the alleyway. "Hello? I got your note. Vat exactly iz zis about?" Kurt announces as he wanders around.
"Hello Kurt." A woman's voice says, a cloak covering her.
Kurt turns around abruptly. "Who are you? Vat do you vant vith me?"
The cloaked figure stops, pausing as she decided what she should say next. "Listen. I know you have a lot of questions, but I cannot give them all to you, it could put you in danger."
"Vat do you mean?" Kurt asks cautiously. "Tell me who you are. Please."
He had a pleading look in his eyes, Mystique feeling guilt ball up in her. She frowns under the closk, but takes a step forward and removes her hood. "I'm your mother, Kurt." She says
Kurt's eyes widen, taking a step back. "No! Zat can't be! You're not my mother!"
"Please, let me explain-"
"No! Vhy should I trust you?! Vhy veren't you zere to take care of me?!" Kurt demands.
Mystique looks away, feeing a tightening in her chest. "I had to give you up… for your safety. It's better that you're meeting me and not your father right now."
"My… father?" Kurt echoes, his own gaze far away.
"He is far more dangerous than I am, Kurt. I would never let him near you though." Mystique takes a step forward again, trying to reach out to Kurt.
"Who iz he?" Kurt asks, softly.
"Kurt, I ca-"
"I vant to know who he iz, Mystique." Kurt says firmly.
Mystique looks at him, almost in shock. Before she could speak, she hears clamoring behind them, growling as the Brotherhood walk over. "Looks like we got an X-men boys!" Pyro grins.
"What are you doing here?! All of you, leave! Now!" Mystique orders, anger washing over her face.
"We got different orders, Mystique." Pietro says as he crosses his arms.
"What?!" Mystique growls.
"Kurt!" Kitty's voice shouts out as the X-men arrive in time.
Mystique grits her teeth, putting her hood back on. The Brotherhood and X-men start fighting, but Kurt was too busy trying to pinpoint his mother who was running away. He teleports on a beam near her, calling out to her. "Who iz he, Mystique?" He asks again.
Mystique looks up at him, hesitant to tell him, Kurt's eyes pleading for the answer. "Next time.." She murmurs, then shifts into a raven and flies off, a dejected look on Kurt's face.
He wasn't even paying attention to the fight as the background noise continued, letting the thoughts in his head ring out as he stares into the sky. The X-men chased the Brotherhood off, Rogue noticing the look on Kurt's face as he sat on the beam with his legs dangling over it. She frowns, climbing up to him to sit with him. "What happened?" She asks.
Kurt looks up at her. "Mystique… Iz my mother…"
Rogue looks at him in shock, then places a gloved hand on his shoulder. "… Ya gonna be okay?"
Kurt sighs. "I.. think so. But she fled before she could tell me who my father iz. Almost like she didn't want to say…"
"Sometahmes it's bettah not knowin'…" Rogue looks down, frowning herself. Shaking her head, she gives Kurt a small smile. "C'mon, let's go back ta the mansion."
Kurt nods, smiling lightly back. The two get down from the beam and head towards the others who were waiting, then they all walk back to the X-jet that was parked close by and head home.
Mystique puts her back against her office door, sinking to the floor as tears poured out of her eyes. "You're too beautiful to be crying, darling." A familiar voice says, making her jolt.
"Get out, Azazel!" She yells, glad everyone else is gone from the school.
The man known as Azazel steps out of the shadows, his own tail flicking as he smirks devilishly at her as he extends a red hand to her. "Tsk tsk Raven. That's no way to treat your husband."
Mystique slaps his hand out of her face, glaring up at him as she stands up straight. "I want you out of my sight, right now, before I shoot you!"
Azazel turns from her, his smirk falling as he looks at her desk with a serious look. "You met up with him. Least you told him though. I would've done it myself, but less… discreet."
"Leave Kurt alone and leave me alone!" Mystique growls. "Were you the one who sent the Brotherhood?!"
Azazel lets out a chuckle. "No, not me. Those boys would have probably freaked out at seeing the devil popping up in their living room. Though it looks like the X-men have their own demon, too." He motions to his eyes to show who he was talking about, Mystique rolling her eyes.
"Do whatever you want with the other X-men, but leave our son alone," Mystique says, her voice hard, then it softens lightly. "Please."
Azazel grins, tilting her chin up. "Aw, now that's all I needed to hear, love. Don't worry, Magneto sent someone else to alert those boys of yours, but he was just checking to make sure your loyalty is with him and you're not wavering."
"My loyalty to Magento will never waiver, believe me." Mystique gulps, but her face didn't give way.
"That's my girl." Azazel grins, then places a kiss on her cheek and steps away. "Perhaps I should pay Kurt a visit next time I am able to come out here. Until then, I'll be watching."
With that he was gone in a puff of red smoke, Mystique's shoulders relaxing as her brows furrow. Letting out a sigh, she finally heads home to go open a bottle of wine and unwind after the day she had, pondering about how Kurt felt in the back of her mind, but also worried about Azazel.
As Mystique unwind for the night, Kurt lay awake in bed in his shared room with Evan, his mind still replaying Mystique telling him she's his mother. Sighing softly, Kurt turns off his lamp, letting sleep finally take over while a puff of red smoke disappears into the night.
Morning arrives, the weekend finally here as the X-teens relax and have some fun instead of doing homework or any studying, that was until Scott called everyone to do a Danger Room session to which many groaned. "C'mon man! It's Saturday!" Evan groans.
"Evil doesn't sleep, Evan." Scott points out.
"How 'bout y' go do de Danger Room session an' we watch?" Remy asks as he looked up from his coffee.
Scott placed his hands over his chest. "It's a team effort, Remy. We have to be prepared for anything."
"Scott, it would seem you have a visitor." Charles announces with a smile as he enters the kitchen.
"Huh?" Scott turns, then heads to the foyer.
He enters, noticing a teen with blonde hair looking around as he waited, Scott squinting his eyes then they widen. "No way…" He says softly, almost frozen in place.
The teen turns, eyed widening-excitement all over his face. "Scott?!" He grins.
"Alex?" Scott croaks.
The two embrace in a tight hug, pulling back after a couple minutes as they laugh and cry. "I thought I was the only one who survived…" Scott says.
"Same here. It's been too long." Alex smiles.
"How'd you know I was even here?" Scott asks.
"Well, that's an interesting story you see," Alex starts. "I was surfing and I had an accident where my board flipped and a tiger shark was coming towards me but then I got this tingling in my hands… and they glowed! It scared him away, but I've never seen anything like that ever before. I get back to shore and go to my parent's house, telling them what happened.
At first they didn't believe me, but once I showed them what I could do, they found this school and had me come and check it out. I wasn't expecting my big brother to be alive and also a mutant but I'm just glad you're here!"
Scott smiles at his brother. "Well, you're more than welcome to join me and the others here, Alex. It's a great school to learn how to control your powers."
"I think I'll take you up on that, Scott." Alex smiles. "I'll talk to my parents, but maybe you can introduce me to your friends?"
"Sure, follow me." Scott nods, leading him to the kitchen where everyone else was still. "Hey guys, this is my brother, Alex."
"Scott's got a brothah?" Rogue raises her brow at Kitty.
"Who knew!" Kitty shrugs.
"Alex, these are my friends and teammates," Scott introduces. "You got Jean over there, Warren, Kurt, Kitty, Piotr, Rogue, Evan, Remy, Bobby and over there is Logan, Ororo, Hank and you already know the Professor."
"So, Alex, you plan on staying?" Bobby asks, leaning forward.
"Yeah, probably. Seems like a great place to learn how to control my newly found powers." Alex smiles.
"Cool! We'll have to try out your powers in a danger room session!" Bobby grins.
"Ah, let's wait to do that, Bobby." Scott points out.
After showing Alex around, he leaves to go home to discuss with his parents, Scott embracing him in a tight hug. "See you soon, Scott". Alex smiles as he waves goodbye as he gets into a cab.
"Yeah, see ya, Alex!" Scott smiles, waving back.
He watched the car drive away, still not believing his little brother was alive and was just here. The rest of the day was relaxing, only a light danger room session taking place after lunch as Scott decided to give everyone a break from a hard session. As the X-teens come up from the Danger room, the alarms go off at the front gate, causing them to head out with Logan and Ororo. "What's going on?" Scott asks.
"Someone's running towards the gate." Logan answers, claws out.
Piotr squints as he looks at the small figure running as a group chased behind her. "Illyana?!" His eyes widen, rushing towards the gate.
"Colossus!" Logan yells.
The blonde girl known as Illyana looks behind her, tripping on a rock. A small purple dragon hisses as it comes out of her unzipped bag, her eyes widening a bit. "Lockheed! Don't." She hisses.
The small dragon looks at her and crawls back into her bag, Illyana starting to get up as her assailants get closer, about to swarm her. Suddenly, Piotr appears in his full chrome metal form, knocking them backwards and sending them running. "Big brother!" She grins as she hugs him tightly after he straightened.
"Illyana, what are you doing here?" He asks, worried, leading her inside the gate to where it was safe. "And what were those? They didn't look like normal people…"
"I came here looking for you," Illyana explains. "It wasn't safe at home…"
"Mother, is she..?" Piotr looks at her, eyebrows raised.
"She's okay. She told me where you were-I had to run away, but I was also followed…" Illyana frowns.
The others walk up to the pair, Logan's claws going inside. "You okay kid?" He asks.
Illyana nods. "I'm okay for now."
"Is this your sister, Piotr?" Ororo asks, a small smile on her lips.
Piotr nods. "Illyana, these are the X-men."
"Pleasure to meet you all." The young girl smiles. Lockheed pops out of the bag, sending everyone backwards in surprise. "And this is Lockheed, my companion."
Lockheed lets out a friendly snarl, flying around the group. Kitty grins. "He's cute!" Kitty scratches under his chin, which made the purple dragon perch itself on her shoulders in delight.
"You can't be serious?!" Bobby looks at her weird.
Lockheed sticks his tongue out at Bobby. Illyana grins. "It seems Lockheed likes you. He usually sticks to me and is wary of others."
"He doesn't scare me." Kitty smiles.
Lockheed flies onto Illyana's shoulders again, her hands holding her backpack in front of her. "How old are ya kid?" Logan asks.
"Thirteen." Illyana answers as she pets Lockheed.
"Hm." Logan gruffly nods. "Let's get you looked at by Hank and then we can talk to the Professor."
Illyana nods, Piotr going with her. Lockheed sticks his tongue out at Bobby again as they passed him, making him jump back. Kitty giggles as she waves to Lockheed. "Man, zis vill be interesting." Kurt comments as they start heading back towards the mansion.
"Still makes you wonder what she was running from though." Warren comments back.
"She'll tell us when she's ready." Scott says.
Illyana gets checked out by Hank, seeing nothing wrong, then her and Piotr go see the Professor who was waiting in his office. "Hello Illyana, I'm Charles Xavier. I run this school. I understand you were looking for your brother Piotr."
"Yes. It is not safe at home for me anymore, so I came here to live with him." She explains. "These men… they wanted me for my.. abilities? I didn't understand what they meant, but after Piotr left to come here to America to be here, Lockheed came to me. I had… an incident that scared my mother one day, but I haven't been able to make it happen until the day those monsters came for me."
The Professor nods in understanding. "I assume you are referring to your powers. As young as you are, they do develop around this time, but it's not always a constant, though every mutant child is different than the next. Here we can help you control your powers. You can stay for as long as you need, Illyana and so can Lockheed."
Illyana smiles, looking up at Piotr who was smiling back at her, but deep down he had more questions for his sister. "Thank you, Professor. I promise Lockheed will be on his best behavior."
The Professor chuckles, then explains a couple things to her about her stay here, letting her know she'll be home schooled till she is able to attend Bayville High as long as she is okay with it, to which the girl agreed as she didn't feel comfortable with the area yet. Piotr and Illyana exit the office, Piotr showing her around in silence as the girl gaped at the large mansion. He stops in a hall where they were alone, looking at her with a blank expression on his face. "Illyana… why didn't you call me? I could've came to help." Piotr looks at his younger sister.
Illyana frowns, looking away. "I thought about it… but it would have been too late if I had you come home. So I had to handle it."
"I can only imagine how mother feels right now. How is she supposed to take care of our farm alone? Maybe I should go back home…"
"Piotr, listen. Mother is okay. She can do it by herself, she told me herself. She would rather you be safe here than have us home and in danger." Illyana grabs his arm, looking at him seriously.
"How did you manage to escape those things?" Piotr asks.
"Lockheed helped me, but when we got here I had to look up where zis place was located. I thought we got rid of them, but they followed me here. I couldn't summon my sword like I did those couple times back at home so I ran. Took a cab at first, then he dropped me off close by and I ran the rest of the way." Illyana explained, petting Lockheed for comfort.
"You are safe here, Illyana," Piotr reassures her, placing a hand on her free shoulder. "I will not let anything happen to you. I promise."
Illyana smiles and hugs her brother, Lockheed snuggling in between them. The rest of the day went on as normal, Illyana settling in with Lockheed and exploring the grounds. Kitty gets to know Illyana better, the two becoming instant friends. Lockheed teases Bobby some more, scaring him a little bit and then acting innocent around the others. Bobby was not amused.
The others interacted with Illyana, getting the know Colossuses younger sister and her mysterious pet dragon. As night rolls around, Rogue gets ready for bed, wearing a tank top and shorts with her gloves on. She flips her book she reads as she starts to walk towards her bed, but stops when she hears a light tap on her balcony door. Bookmarking her spot, she opens the door to find Remy standing there, his own sweatpants and tee on. "Whatcha want swamp rat?" She asks.
Remy gives her a small smirk. "Jus' seein' if y' doin' any betteh since de night y' had dat nightmare."
Rogue smiles slightly. "Ah'm fahne, thanks. An' it was a memory from Mystique when she got rid of Kurt when he was a babeh. 'S still terrible what she did though…"
Remy looks at her, leaning her balcony railing. "Well… Not all parents deserve t' have kids."
"Yeah… Ah'm with ya on that one." Rogue sighs as she leans against her doorframe. "But Kurt's got his adopted parents, they did a much bettah job at takin' care of him than Mystique."
"He's lucky t' know his biological mother." Remy crosses his arms. "I never knew mine."
Rogue looks up at him with wide eyes. "Oh… Oh.. Remy, ah'm sorreh…."
"'S fine." Remy gives her a half smile, but she could tell it wasn't sincere. "Never knew both m' parents but 's fine."
Rogue takes a breath. "Mah mothah died when ah was eight. That was eight yeahs ago an' at first it was a bit rough, but mah dad an' ah got through it togethah… until he disowned meh.."
Remy looks up at her, seeing her eyes distant as she looks at the ground. She looks up at him, shaking her head. "We.. should go ta bed." Rogue rubs her bare arms.
"Rogue, 'm sorry." Remy says, softly.
"It's okay. G'naght Remy." Rogue gives him a small smile, then turns to go inside.
Remy frowns a bit as he watched her. "Night chère."
He goes back to his room, sneaking in through his balcony door and going to bed as Rogue does the same. Little did anyone know that they were going to be getting more students as Alex and Illyana are just the start.
