Chapter 31

Everleigh sat some papers down onto the table for Nick to sign.

Steve stalked into the office causing Everleigh to look up. "You just can't stop yourself from lying, can you?" Steve said with a scoff as he looked at Fury.

"I didn't lie. Agent Romanoff had a different mission than yours." Nick said as he took the file from Everleigh.

"Which you didn't feel obliged to share."

"I'm not obliged to do anything."

"Those hostages could've died, Nick."

"I sent the greatest soldier in history to make sure that didn't happen."

"Soldiers trust each other, that's what makes it an army. Not a bunch of guys running around and shooting guns."

"The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye. Look, I didn't want you doing anything you weren't comfortable with. Agent Romanoff is comfortable with everything."

"I can't lead a mission when the people I'm leading have missions of their own."

"It's called compartmentalization. Nobody spills the secrets because nobody knows them all."

"Except you."

Everleigh rolled her eyes, scoffing a bit.

"You're wrong about me. I do share. I'm nice like that." Fury said as he walked with Everleigh to the elevator before stepping into it.

Steve followed them.

"Insight bay."

"Captain Rogers does not have clearance for Project Insight." The computer said.

"Director override, Fury, Nicholas J."

"Confirmed."

The elevator began to move down.

Everleigh let out a breath as she put her hands behind her back.

"You know, they used to play music."

Everleigh rolled her eyes. "Some of them still do."

"Yeah. My grandfather operated one of these things for forty years. My granddad worked in a nice building, he got good tips." Nick looked up. "He'd walk home every night, roll of ones stuffed in his lunch bag. He'd say "hi", people would say hi back. Time went on, the neighborhood got rougher. He'd say "Hi", they'd say, "Keep on steppin'. Granddad got to grippin' that lunch bag a little tighter."

"Did he ever get mugged?"

"Every week some punk would say, "What's in the bag?""

"What did he do?"

"He'd show 'em. Bunch of crumpled ones and loaded .22 Magnum." Nick smiled remembering it well. "Granddad loved people. But he didn't trust them very much."

Steve looked out and saw a giant helicarrier.

"Yeah, I know. They're a little bit bigger than a .22. This is Project Insight. Three next generation Helicarriers synced to a network of targeting satellites."

"Launched from the Lemurian Star."

"Once we get them in the air they never need to come down. Continuous suborbital flight courtesy of our new repulsor engines."

"Stark?"

Everleigh let out a soft chuckle. "Well, he had a few suggestions once he got an up close look at our old turbines."

Nick nodded his head at what Everleigh had said. " These new long range precision guns can eliminate a thousand hostiles a minute. The satellites can read a terrorist's DNA before he steps outside his spider hole. We gonna neutralize a lot of threats before they even happen."

"I thought the punishment usually came after the crime." Steve said, looking over at Nick.

"We can't afford to wait that long."

"Who's "we"?"

"After New York, I convinced the World Security Council we needed a quantum surge in threat analysis. For once we're way ahead of the curve."

"By holding a gun at everyone on Earth and calling it protection."

"You know, I read those SSR files. Greatest generation? You guys did some nasty stuff."

"Yeah, we compromised. Sometimes in ways that made us not sleep so well. But we did it so the people could be free. This isn't freedom, this is fear."

"SHIELD takes the world as it is, not as we'd like it to be. It's getting damn near past time for you to get with that program, Cap." Everleigh said, crossing her arms letting out a breath. She hated to think that Steve wasn't one to listen to what was being said from the two of them.

"Don't hold your breath." Steve said turning and walking off away from the two of them.

"What do we do about Rogers?" Everleigh asked the director.

"For the time being nothing."

"Sir?" Everleigh questioned as she looked over at Nick.

"We don't need him to not trust us."

Everleigh nodded her head. "So we leave him alone sir?"

"Yes." Nick said a nod of his head.

Everleigh nodded her head and turned on her heels.

"Agent Vincin."

"Sir?" She questioned turning to look over her shoulder.

"Be careful out there."

"Yes, sir."

This is the end of Chapter 31. I hope that you guys enjoyed it even though it was a bit of a short chapter, which I promise I'm trying to get away from writing short chapters. But it doesn't seem to work out too well. Please leave a review and let me know what you think. I will continue to try and update every single Monday as long as I have chapters to post. I'm trying my best to get as much done as I possibly can so I don't have to worry about writing during the time of my healing from surgery. Reviews keep me going. Until next time.
