A/N I normally post on Wednesdays but tomorrow is going to be hectic with Thursday being Thanksgiving. Which, if you celebrate, Happy Thanksgiving!
Chapter One: Mysterious Brunette
Kara's POV
Entering the nightclub, I weaved my way through the sea of people to the bar. It took a few minutes for my vision to acclimate to the dim lighting with the occasional brightness of a stage light. The sound of people and music alone was almost overpowering. This is where Diana said she'd meet me. Looking around, I did my best to spot the redhead. My stomach dropped when I saw her grinding against another patron. A moment later, Diana had her tongue in the other woman's mouth.
"Can I get you a drink, Miss?" The bartender asked, tossing a towel over his shoulder. Noticing who I was looking at, he continued. "It's none of my business, so you can tell me to piss off, but if you were here hoping for anything except a quickie, Diana is not the woman for you."
"A whiskey sour, please." Turning towards the bartender, I pinched the bridge of my nose. "I guess I'm lucky then."
"I'm Chris. You dodged a bullet with that one. She's a good person but not the type who's ready to settle down or even have an exclusive partner." Placing a glass before me, he smiled. "You're new here. First one's on me. I promise, not everyone is like that."
"Thank you. I'm Kara." Taking a long sip, I enjoyed the vanilla, caramel with a hint of tartness flavor of the drink. Alcohol doesn't affect me but some drinks taste good.
"You're welcome. Tab or one and done?"
"Tab." Opening my wallet, I slid my credit card towards the dark haired man.
"Let me know if I can get you anything else," he glanced at my card. "Miss Danvers."
"I will. Thanks." Sipping my drink, I looked around the club. This is definitely not my scene. Not sure what my scene would be but this isn't it. Finishing my drink, I waved Chris back over.
Giving me a thumb up, he finished with his current patron before making his way back to me. "What can I get you?"
Before I could answer, a brunette swooped in beside me. "Another whiskey girl. I like it." She smiled, looking me over quickly. "Another round of whiskey sours for me and-," she waited for my name.
"Kara." Golly. She's gorgeous.
"For me and Kara," she paused. "As long as you're okay with that." Another charming smile. "I have a booth or we can go to the outdoor porch where it's a little quieter. This doesn't seem like your kind of place."
"It's really not," I laughed nervously.
"So, another round?" Chris looked between us.
"Yeah," I smiled.
"Put it on my tab." Turning her attention to me, the brunette smiled. "I wanted to catch you before you left. You seem different from most here."
The words came before I could stop them. "So do you."
"I'm very different," she grinned.
"Ladies." Chris placed the drinks between us.
"Thanks," we spoke in unison.
Picking up her drink, the brunette motioned towards the side door. "Follow me." Taking my drink, I followed close behind the mysterious woman. Something about her is drawing me in. I can't figure out what it is. Halfway through the club, she glanced behind to make sure I was still there.
Reaching the covered porch, the noise level dropped drastically when the door closed. Finding a small U-shaped booth, we sat. "Better?"
"Y-Yeah. A lot better." Without the flashing lights, she looks vaguely familiar.
"I prefer getting to know a woman before I dance with her." Taking a sip of her drink, she placed it back onto the table. "I'm Kate."
"I agree. I'd like to get to know someone a little before doing something intimate like that."
A dark brow rose. "You are different," she purred. "Thinking that a dance can be intimate and not just an action. I like it," she paused. "I'm starting to like you. Tell me a little about yourself."
If it wasn't so dark out here, she'd see me blushing. "I've lived in National City for a while and just got a promotion. There's not too much more to tell." Not that I can tell you.
Taking a long sip of her drink, Kate placed the empty glass back on the table. "I think there's more to you than meets the eye." Strategically, she moved closer as she leaned back.
She makes my heart race. "What about you? New to town?"
"I am, actually." Turning towards me, Kate let her arm rest on the back of the booth.
"What brought you to town?" I turned more to face her.
"I'm hoping to get out of my family's shadow. What do you do?"
"I'm a writer." Not a lie. I don't want to broadcast that I'm a reporter just yet.
"Maybe I'll read some of your work one day." Gently, Kate let the pads of her fingers brush my arm. "Too much?"
I'm on fire. "No," I breathed. I can feel myself getting lost in her eyes.
"Can I get you ladies anything to eat or drink?" A young man smiled, notebook in hand.
"Do you want to do food? It's on me."
She looks hopeful. "Looking at a menu wouldn't hurt." Taking the offered menu, I glanced over it.
"Will you close Kara's tab and bring her card back?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"I've had two drinks already. I think I'll switch to water and a Coke." Nodding, he wrote the order down. "See anything you'd like?"
Almost everything! "Do you want to split the potato skins and the mac bowl?"
"Interesting choices," Kate laughed. "Anything to drink?"
"Root beer, please." I can feel her eyes burning into me.
"Anything else?" The man looked between us.
"Will you make sure to bring two forks?" Kate paused. "I'm not missing out on the mac and cheese."
"Of course. I'll be back soon with the drinks and card."
"Thank you." Once he was gone, I began to fidget under Kate's gaze. "Thanks…"
"For what?" Her voice was tender.
"The drinks, the food, and not judging the fact that I'm about to eat the bar's version of junk food in front of you."
"If anyone judges you on what you eat, they're an asshole and don't deserve your time."
The waiter came back with our drinks and my card. "Food will be out shortly."
"Thanks." Sliding my card back into my wallet, I took a sip of my drink. I tried my best to hide my amusement that my drink was served in a square glass.
"What's so funny?" A dark brow rose. "You're desperately trying not to laugh."
"It's a really corny joke." I waved my hand dismissively.
"Let's hear it," she grinned.
"No. No." I shook my head. "It's really not a good joke."
"Try me," Kate smirked.
"I warned you." I can't believe I'm about to say this. "If you serve root beer in a square glass you just have beer."
It took a moment for the joke to process. "That's pretty bad," the woman laughed.
"I told you it was corny!" I smiled.
"You did." Taking a sip of Coke, she continued. "Is root beer your favorite?"
"Cream soda is. Especially if you make it into a float." A brilliant smile lit the dim area. Golly, her smile. "What?"
"You really are different from other women. What made you come here?"
"My boss." Dark brows creased. "She gave me a speech about how I should go after what I want even though it could be terrifying."
"She sounds like a smart woman."
"She is."
"What do you want?" Kate whispered. Green eyes searched mine for a moment. Glancing down to lightly glossed lips, the corner twitched upwards. Leaning forward, Kate pressed a soft kiss on my lips. When I didn't pull away, she tipped my chin with her index finger before deepening the kiss. "Should we get the food to go? Or do you want to eat here?"
Do that again. Please. "To go…" I breathed.
Taking my hand, Kate led me back inside and towards the bar. Noticing us, the young waiter spoke. "The food will be out in a minute. Is there anything else I can get you?"
"Can you make the order to go?" Kate asked.
"Of course."
The brunette never let go of my hand as she pulled out her phone. "Did you drive here?"
"No. I took an Uber. You?" I feel slightly bad for lying but it'll have to do for now.
"Same. I knew I was going to have a few drinks so I wanted to be safe." Those are bonus points. "Car should be here soon."
"Here you go, Ma'am. I closed your account as well."
"Thank you." Pulling out two twenties, Kate gave them to the young man. "Give one to Chris, would you?"
"Yes, Ma'am. Thank you."
Taking the bag, we made our way outside and found our ride waiting. Climbing into the backseat, it was nice not to be surrounded by people and noise.
I'm going off somewhere with someone I don't know. Probably to do things with. Basically everything Eliza and Jeremiah told Alex and I not to do. Powers or not, should I be doing this? With someone I've only known for a couple of hours?
Noticing my turmoil, Kate spoke softly. "I can have the driver take you somewhere else if you're not comfortable. I shouldn't have assumed that you wanted to go home with me."
"I did, do, want to." Biting my lip, I toyed with the paper bag. "I've never done this type of thing before."
"Nothing has to happen tonight. We can go to my place, eat, and you can go if that's what you want," she paused. "Maybe a movie before you leave?" Lustful green had turned hopeful.
"That sounds good," I paused. "I mean, you can't waste a good mac and cheese."
"Exactly," Kate smiled.
Coming to a stop, I realized we were in the rich part of town. Who is this woman? Taking the food bag, I followed Kate into the elevator. We took it to the top floor where only two units resided. I've flown by here so many times and wondered what the inside looked like.
"Here we are." Pushing open the door, the brunette let me enter the spacious condo.
"Wow…" My voice trailed. "This place is incredible."
"Thank you." As Kate walked by, she let her hand rest on my lower back. "I'll get drinks and plates if you'd like to pick a movie."
I really like it when she touches me. "Okay." Glancing around the living room, I noticed there weren't any personal photos. Only steampunk-esque artwork. Picking up the remote, I scrolled through the different streaming services. She likes science fiction and fantasy. Some dramas and comedies too. "We have a lot of movies and television shows in common."
"First mac and cheese. Now the same TV/movie tastes? You're a woman after my heart," Kare joked.
"Grace and Frankie is on your list but you've only watched one episode. Did you like it?"
"I did. I think it's hilarious. I don't have much time to watch TV, so I stopped after the first episode. If you want to watch that, we can." Joining me, Kate placed the plates and drinks on the coffee table. "Shall we?"
Taking a seat beside the brunette, we started the show. Both of us laughed as the episode went on. "This tastes amazing." Kate's eyes rolled back. "I've not had a good mac and cheese since I was in New York City. If you ever go, you need to try Serendipity 3. Their food is amazing and the atmosphere is great."
"I like the name. Is that one of your favorite restaurants in New York?"
"It's one of them. How are the potato skins?" Picking one up, Kate examined it.
"Not bad. I've had better."
As the episodes played, Kate wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "Is this okay?" Nodding, I eased into her.
Halfway through season one, I needed to use the restroom. Sitting there, I thought about how this evening started and how it's going. I really like Kate. She seems nice. I'm glad Diana stood me up. Otherwise, I wouldn't have met Kate. When she kisses or touches me, it sets me on fire. I really like it.
Rejoining the brunette, I saw her tossing away the to-go containers. "To your benefit, I have one left." Holding up a can of cream soda, Kate's brow rose. "Floats? I think I have just enough vanilla ice cream left for two. I have a full can of whipped cream."
"At one in the morning?" I asked, leaning against the bar.
"We're adults. No one can tell us what we can or can't do," she paused. "It is late though." Shifting her gaze, Kate placed the can on the counter. "I'd like you to stay. Even if nothing happens tonight."
I barely know her but I don't want to leave. "I'll stay." Entering the kitchen, I picked up the soda can. "Why not?" I smiled.
Shaking the whipped cream, Kate tilted her head back and filled her mouth with creamy sweetness. Meeting my gaze, she shook her head. "Don't," she warned. Swallowing, she laughed. "That would have been bad if you made me laugh." Holding the can towards me, Kate grinned. "Trust me?" For some reason, yes. Tilting my head, I allowed Kate to do the same.
Green eyes darkened as I licked the cream from the side of my mouth. "You have a little bit-," Cupping my cheek, Kate wiped the rest away from my bottom lip. Meeting my gaze, she asked a silent question. Brushing my lips against her thumb, I gave my answer. Capturing my lips in a slow kiss, Kate backed me against the counter. Keeping my hips in place, she kissed down my neck.
Sighing, I fumbled with the hem of her shirt. Don't just rip it off. Gosh. I love the feeling of her mouth on me. Sliding my hands under her shirt, electricity surged through me. Her heart is pounding too. Am I ready for this? I want- I moaned feeling warm hands under my shirt brushing just under the cups of my bra. What is this feeling? "I've never…"
"I know." Her voice was husky. Keeping her hands still on my ribs, Kate met my gaze. "We can stop and go to separate rooms for the night. I don't want to pressure you into something you don't want to do. Or aren't ready for."
"I want to feel you touch me."
A soft growl vibrated the woman's throat as she kissed me again. Kissing down my neck, Kate unzipped my skirt. Pulling off my shirt, I let both articles of clothing fall to the floor. "Last thing I'll say about it: "no" and "stop" are complete sentences."
"Thank you," I smiled. Any nervousness I had vanished seeing the care and passion in Kate's eyes. "Now, can I get you out of your clothes so I'm not the only one half naked in your kitchen?"
A broad smile made its way to the shorter woman's face. "I'd like that." Taking the hem of her shirt, Kate pulled it over her head and dropped it.
"Rao…"
A/N 2I swear this is a SuperCorp fic. I got the idea for chapter one from Katie's episode of Dates.
